Abstract:We show that a compact Hermitian manifold $(M^6, \omega, J)$ such that $\omega$ is pluriclosed with vanishing Bismut-Ricci form is either Kähler Calabi-Yau or Bismut-flat, and hence a quotient of either $SU(2) \times \mathbb R \times \mathbb C$ or $SU(2) \times SU(2)$.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:The diffeomorphism class of simply-connected smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds with torsion-free cohomology is determined via certain basic topological invariants: the Hodge numbers, the triple intersection form, and the second Chern class. In the present paper, we shed some light on this classification by placing bounds on the number of diffeomorphism classes present in the set of smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds constructed from the Kreuzer-Skarke list of reflexive polytopes up to Picard number six. The main difficulty arises from the comparison of triple intersection numbers and divisor integrals of the second Chern class up to basis transformations. By using certain basis-independent invariants, some of which appear here for the first time, we are able to place lower bounds on the number of classes. Upper bounds are obtained by explicitly identifying basis transformations, using constraints related to the index of line bundles. Extrapolating our results, we conjecture that the favourable entries of the Kreuzer-Skarke list of reflexive polytopes leads to some $10^{400}$ diffeomorphically distinct Calabi-Yau threefolds.

On the geometry of Kähler--Frobenius manifolds and their classification

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to show that flat compact Kähler manifolds exhibit the structure of a Frobenius manifold, a structure originating in 2D Topological Quantum Field Theory and closely related to Joyce structure. As a result, we classify all such manifolds. It can be deduced that Kähler--Frobenius manifolds include certain Calabi--Yau manifolds, complex tori $T=\mathbb{C}^n/\mathbb{Z}^n$, Hantzsche--Wendt manifolds, hyperelliptic manifolds and manifolds of type $T/G$, where $G$ is a finite group acting on $T$ freely and containing no translations. An explicit study is provided for the two-dimensional case. Additionally, we can prove that Chern's conjecture for Kähler pre-Frobenius manifolds holds. Lastly, we establish that certain classes of Kähler-Frobenius manifolds share a direct relationship with theta functions which are important objects in number theory as well as complex analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a classification of all compact Hermitian manifolds with flat Bismut connection. We show that the torsion tensor of such a manifold must be parallel, thus the universal cover of such a manifold is a Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric and a compatible left invariant complex structure. In particular, isosceles Hopf surfaces are the only Bismut flat compact non-Kähler surfaces, while central Calabi-Eckmann threefolds are the only simply-connected compact Bismut flat threefolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the local properties of the moduli space of a polarized Calabi-Yau manifold. Let $U$ be a neighborhood of the moduli space. Then we know the universal covering space $V$ of $U$ is a smooth manifold. Suppose $D$ is the classifying space of a polarized Calabi-Yau manifold with the automorphism group $G$. Let $D_1$ be the symmetric space associated with $G$. Then we proved that the map from $V$ to $D_1$ induced by the period map is a pluriharmonic map. We also give a Kahler metric on $V$, which is called the Hodge metric. We proved that the Ricci curvature of the Hodge metric is negative away from zero. We also proved the non-existence of the K\"ahler metric on the classifying space of a Calabi-Yau threefold which is invariant under a cocompact lattice of $G$.

Abstract:We find all hyper-Kähler 4-manifolds admitting conformal Kähler structures with respect to either orientation, and we show that these structures can be expressed as a combination of twistor elementary states (and possibly a self-dual dyon) in locally flat spaces. The complex structures of different flat pieces are not compatible however, reflecting that the global geometry is not a linear superposition. For either orientation the space must be Gibbons-Hawking (thus excluding the Atiyah-Hitchin metric), and, if the orientations are opposite, it must also be toric and have an irreducible Killing tensor. We also show that the only hyper-Kähler 4-metric with a non-constant Killing-Yano tensor is the half-flat Taub-NUT instanton.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify all isomorphic classes of a family of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with 20 parameters. In addition, we show that the isomorphisms form a finite group. The invariants under the action of this group are calculated by introducing the so-called DS-graph.

Abstract:We show that if a connected compact kählerian surface $M$ with nonpositive gaussian curvature is furnished with a closed conformal vector field $\xi$ whose singular points are isolated, then $M$ is isometric to a flat torus and $\xi$ is parallel. We also consider the case of a connected complete kählerian manifod $M$ of complex dimension $n>1$ and furnished with a nontrivial closed conformal vector field $\xi$. In this case, it is well known that the singularities of $\xi$ are automatically isolated and the nontrivial leaves of the distribution generated by $\xi$ and $J\xi$ are totally geodesic in $M$. Assuming that one such leaf is compact, has torsion normal holonomy group and that the holomorphic sectional curvature of $M$ along it is nonpositive, we show that $\xi$ is parallel and $M$ is foliated by a family of totally geodesic isometric tori and also by a family of totally geodesic isometric complete kählerian manifolds of complex dimension $n-1$. In particular, the the universal covering of $M$ is isometric to a riemannian product having $\mathbb R^2$ as a factor. We also present a generic example showing that one cannot get rid of the hypothesis on the nonpositivity of the holomorphic sectional curvature along at least one such leaf.

Counting Calabi-Yau Threefolds

Abstract:We enumerate topologically-inequivalent compact Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces. By computing arithmetic and algebraic invariants and the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of curves, we prove that the number of distinct simply connected Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces resulting from triangulations of four-dimensional reflexive polytopes is 4, 27, 183, 1,184 and 8,036 at $h^{1,1}$ = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. We also establish that there are ten equivalence classes of Wall data of non-simply connected Calabi-Yau threefolds from the Kreuzer-Skarke list. Finally, we give a provisional count of threefolds obtained by enumerating non-toric flops at $h^{1,1} =2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the study of boundedness questions for (simply connected) smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds commenced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.01268" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.01268">arXiv:1706.01268</a>. The diffeomorphism class of such a threefold is known to be determined up to finitely many possibilities by the integral middle cohomology and two integral forms on the integral second cohomology, namely the cubic cup-product form and the linear form given by cup-product with the second chern class. The question addressed in both papers is whether knowledge of these cubic and linear forms determines the threefold up to finitely many families, that is the moduli of such threefolds is bounded. If this is true, then in particular the middle integral cohomology would be bounded by knowing these two forms. Crucial to this question is the study of rigid non-movable surfaces on the threefold, which are the irreducible surfaces that deform with any small deformation of the complex structure of the threefold but for which no multiple moves on the threefold. We showed in the previous paper that if there are no such surfaces, then the answer to the above question is yes. Moreover if the Picard number is 2, the answer was shown to be yes without any further assumptions on the Calabi-Yau threefold. The main results of this paper are for Picard number 3, where we prove boundedness in the case where there is at most one rigid non-movable surface, assuming the cubic form is smooth (thereby defining a real elliptic curve); in the two cases where the Hessian curve is singular, we also assume that the line defined by the second chern class does not intersect this curve at an inflexion point. In addition to the methods described in the previous paper, a further crucial tool in the proofs will be the classical Steinian involution on the Hessian of an elliptic curve.

Abstract:This is a continuation of our previous paper on settling the non-compact version of Calabi's conjecture on open manifold. In both these papers, open manifolds will mean quasiprojective manifolds M which can be written as MBAR\D. We are constructing complete Kahler metrics on M with either zero Ricci curvature or non-negative Ricci curvature. As was explained in the program outlined by the second author in the Congress in Helsinki, D is related to the zeroes of a section of K(MBAR)-1. In our previous paper [TY1], we dealt with the case when the multiplicity is equal to one. In this paper, we finish the case when the multiplicity is greater than one. We also allow orbifold type singularities in all these discussions. Our constructions include practically all known examples of complete Kahler manifolds with zero Ricci curvature of finite topological type. (It should be noted that M. Anderson, P. Kronheimer and Le Brun have recently constructed such examples with infinite topological type.) Besides constructing many new examples of such manifolds which may serve as gravitational instantons, these matrices provide a bridge between metric geometry and algebraic geometry of M because we do have some understanding of complete manifolds with non-negative curvature.
The generalized Kähler Calabi-Yau problem

Abstract:We formulate an extension of the Calabi conjecture to the setting of generalized Kähler geometry. We show a transgression formula for the Bismut Ricci curvature in this setting, which requires a new local Goto/Kodaira-Spencer deformation result, and use it to show that solutions of the generalized Calabi-Yau equation on compact manifolds are classically Kähler, Calabi-Yau, and furthermore unique in their generalized Kähler class. We show that the generalized Kähler-Ricci flow is naturally adapted to this conjecture, and exhibit a number of a priori estimates and monotonicity formulas which suggest global existence and convergence. For initial data in the generalized Kähler class of a Kähler Calabi-Yau structure we prove the flow exists globally and converges to this unique fixed point. This has applications to understanding the space of generalized Kähler structures, and as a special case yields the topological structure of natural classes of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms on hyperKähler manifolds. In the case of commuting-type generalized Kähler structures we establish global existence and convergence with arbitrary initial data to a Kähler, Calabi-Yau metric, which yields a new $d d^c$-lemma for these structures.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply a result of the classification of a compact cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifold with a compact Lie group G to obtain a classification of compact cohomogeneity one locally conformal Kähler manifolds. In particular, we prove that the compact complex manifold is a complex one-dimensional torus bundle over a projective rational homogeneous, or cohomogeneity one manifold except of a class of manifolds with a generalized Hopf surface bundle over a projective rational homogeneous space. Additionally, it is a homogeneous compact complex manifold under the complexification GC of the given compact Lie group G under an extra condition that the related closed one form is cohomologous to zero on the generic G orbit. Moreover, the semi-simple part S of the Lie group action has hypersurface orbits, i.e., it is of cohomogeneity one with respect to the semi-simple Lie group S in that special case.

The Geometry of Three-Forms on Symplectic Six-Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometries associated with 3-forms of various orbital types on a symplectic 6-manifold. We show that there are extremely rich geometric structures attached to certain unstable 3-forms arising naturally from degeneration of Calabi-Yau structures, which in turn provides us a new perspective towards the SYZ conjecture. We give concrete examples and demonstrate that the limiting behavior of the Type IIA flow can be used to detect canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:We construct a geometric model of eight-dimensional manifolds and realize them in the context of type II string theory. These eight-manifolds are constructed by non-trivial T4 fibrations over Calabi–Yau two-folds. These give rise to eight-dimensional non-Kähler Hermitian manifolds with SU(4) structure. The eight-manifold is also a circle fibration over a seven-dimensional G2 manifold with skew torsion. The eight-manifolds of this type appear as internal manifolds with SU(4) structure in type IIB string theory with F3 and F7 fluxes. These manifolds have generalized calibrated cycles in the presence of fluxes.
Nilmanifolds with non-nilpotent complex structures and their pseudo-Kähler geometry

Abstract:We classify nilpotent Lie algebras with complex structures of weakly non-nilpotent type in real dimension eight, which is the lowest dimension where they arise. Our study, together with previous results on strongly non-nilpotent structures, completes the classification of 8-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras admitting complex structures of non-nilpotent type. As an application, we identify those that support a pseudo-Kähler metric, thus providing new counterexamples to a previous conjecture and an infinite family of (Ricci-flat) non-flat neutral Calabi-Yau structures. Moreover, we arrive at the topological restriction $b_1(X)\geq 3$ for every pseudo-Kähler nilmanifold $X$ with invariant complex structure, up to complex dimension four.

Families of Quintic Calabi-Yau 3-Folds with Discrete Symmetries

Abstract:At special loci in their moduli spaces, Calabi-Yau manifolds are endowed with discrete symmetries. Over the years, such spaces have been intensely studied and have found a variety of important applications. As string compactifications they are phenomenologically favored, and considerably simplify many important calculations. Mathematically, they provided the framework for the first construction of mirror manifolds, and the resulting rational curve counts. Thus, it is of significant interest to investigate such manifolds further. In this paper, we consider several unexplored loci within familiar families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces that have large but unexpected discrete symmetry groups. By deriving, correcting, and generalizing a technique similar to that of Candelas, de la Ossa and Rodriguez-Villegas, we find a calculationally tractable means of finding the Picard-Fuchs equations satisfied by the periods of all 3-forms in these families. To provide a modest point of comparison, we then briefly investigate the relation between the size of the symmetry group along these loci and the number of nonzero Yukawa couplings. We include an introductory exposition of the mathematics involved, intended to be accessible to physicists, in order to make the discussion self-contained.

Abstract:We prove that any hyper-Kähler sixfold $K$ of generalized Kummer type has a naturally associated manifold $Y_K$ of $\mathrm{K}3^{[3]}$-type. It is obtained as crepant resolution of the quotient of $K$ by a group of symplectic involutions acting trivially on its second cohomology. When $K$ is projective, the variety $Y_K$ is birational to a moduli space of stable sheaves on a uniquely determined projective~$\mathrm{K}3$ surface~$S_K$. As application of this construction we show that the Kuga-Satake correspondence is algebraic for the K3 surfaces $S_K$, producing infinitely many new families of $\mathrm{K}3$ surfaces of general Picard rank $16$ satisfying the Kuga-Satake Hodge conjecture.
