Personality disorders and gender difference in heroin dependence

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the personality disorders and differences between males and females among heroin dependence patients. Methods:The structured clinical interview for DSM-Ⅲ-R-patient version (SCID-P) was used to assess the diagnosis of personality disorders by DSM -Ⅲ- R axis Ⅱ and the comparance between males and females among 93 heroin dependent patients. Results:The prevalence of personality disorder in axis Ⅱ was 89. 2%. Boardline personality disorder (62. 4%),compulsive personality disorder(59.1% ) were the most common diagnosis, paranoid personality disorder(52.7% ) was more common diagnosis. Except antisocial personality disorder, the difference between males and females in other personality disorders was not significance. Conclusion:All kinds of personality disorders accompanied heroin dependent patients. Antisocial personality disorder was more found in male patients. To strengthen the treatment effect and prevent them from addiction again, different gender should be given different treatment.
