Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the psychiatric comorbidity among heroin dependent patients. Methods: The structured clinical interview for DSM-III-R - patient version (SCID-P) and The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R - axis II personality disorder (SCID-II) were used to assess current and lifetime DSM-III-R axis I diagnosis and the prevalence of DSM-III-R axis II personality disorder in 113 heroin dependent patients. Results: The lifetime mood disorders axisⅠdiagnosis was 55.7%. The prevalence of personality disorder in axis II was 89.7%. Borderline personality disorder (61.7%), compulsive personality disorder (58.5%) were the most common diagnoses. Conclusion:These findings suggest the clinical importance of obtaining both axisⅠ and axis II diagnoses in heroin dependent patients and highlight the need for treatment that focuses on diagnosed mental disorders in substance abusers.
