Influence of Rotor-Stator Axial Clearance on Compressor Rotating Stall Characteristics

Abstract:As a critical factor affecting compressor performance, the influence of a rotor-stator axial clearance on rotating stall characteristics remains unclear. In the process of understanding the compressor stall mechanism, the relationship between the rotor stall characteristics of a 1.5-stage compressor and the downstream stator is studied. In this paper, numerical simulation is mainly utilized to study the change in flow field behavior and rotor performance during the stall process under the enlargement of axial clearance between rotor and downstream stator. The experimental signals and compressor characteristics are used to verify the numerical results. The numerical results show that the spanwise distribution of flow capacity changes while the stall margin decreases with the enlargement of axial clearance, and the disturbances intensity during the stall process is different. Firstly, the pressure signals during the stall process are analyzed. The frequency band of rotating instability decreases from 0.55BPF to 0.44BPF and the intensity decreases by 50% under the large clearance, and the stall inception appears in advance with a opposite change in the circumferential propagation velocity. Then, the variations of throughflow characteristics, rotor-stator interference and tip leakage flow in different phases are investigated. It is found that the increase of axial clearance leads to flow field blockage aggravates at the tip and weakens at the root. For the high intensity wakes at the tip region, the vortex scale increases more in the larger axial clearance, enhancing the negative effect of velocity deficit on stator separation. The axial momentum ratio is used to quantitatively describe the instability degree of tip leakage flow. The severer flow blockage at the tip region leads to higher tip leakage flow axial momentum ratio and the advanced onset of stall. Finally, further investigation of the stall cell flow mechanism shows that the tornado vortex structure formed by the interaction between lateral vortex and tip secondary vortex can be regarded as the flow criterion of spike stall, which is generated in both models.
