Abstract:This paper presents results of the sound speed profiles (SSPs) inversion using a data set obtained in shallow water of South China Sea in 2016 summer with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) carrying source. In-site acoustic data collected by the vertical line array (VLA) are analyzed and employed for the inversion of time-evolving SSPs. The inversion is formulated as a tracking problem with the state-space model, in which the SSPs are parameterized by the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the degree of freedom. The differential evolution (DE) is implemented in the sequential process to maximize the a posterior probability. Results demonstrate the validation of the method for the SSP inversion, and the inversion errors are discussed.

Abstract:The technique of acoustic levitation normally produces a standing wave and the potential well of the sound field can be used to trap small objects. Since no solid surface is involved it has been widely applied for the study of fluid physics, nucleation, bio/chemical processes, and various forms of soft matter. In this article, we survey the works on drop dynamics in acoustic levitation, focus on how the dynamic behavior is related to the rheological properties and discuss the possibility to develop a novel rheometer based on this technique. We review the methods and applications of acoustic levitation for the manipulation of both liquid and solid samples and emphasize the important progress made in the study of phase transitions and bio-chemical analysis. We also highlight the possible open areas for future research.

Abstract:Acoustic levitation is frequently used for non-contact manipulation of objects and to study the impact of microgravity on physical and biological processes. While the force field produced by sound pressure lifts particles against gravity (primary acoustic force), multiple levitating objects in the same acoustic cavity interact via forces that arise from scattered sound (secondary acoustic forces). Current experimental techniques for obtaining these force fields are not well-suited for mapping the primary force field at high spatial resolution and cannot directly measure the secondary scattering force. Here we introduce a method that can measure both acoustic forces in situ, including secondary forces in the near-field limit between arbitrarily shaped, closely spaced objects. Operating similarly to an atomic force microscope, the method inserts into the acoustic cavity a suitably shaped probe tip at the end of a long, flexible cantilever and optically detects its deflection. This makes it possible to measure forces with a resolution better than 50 nN, and also to apply stress or strain in a controlled manner to manipulate levitated objects. We demonstrate this by extracting the acoustic potential present in a levitation cavity, directly measuring the acoustic scattering force between two objects, and applying tension to a levitated granular raft of acoustically-bound particles in order to obtain the force-displacement curve for its deformation.

Abstract:Standing wave acoustic levitation and transmission technique has been widely used in many research areas. However, the vibration of particles in an acoustic field restricts their applications. In this work, a kind of mechanism is developed by the authors, in which not only a harmonic linear actuator but also position feedback are used to precisely adjust the distance between the radiator and the reflector with micrometric accuracy. And video computing software is applied to track the motion of the particle. The influence of the factors on the frequencies of the particle both in vertical and horizontal were detailed. Besides, the acceleration field was calculated, which is in good agreement with the model of spring oscillator of an acoustic field.

Abstract:A planar object can be levitated stably close to a piston sound source by making use of acoustic radiation pressure. This phenomenon is called near-field acoustic levitation [Y. Hashimoto et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 100, 2057-2061 (1996)]. In the present article, the levitation distance is predicted theoretically by numerically solving basic equations in a compressible viscous fluid subject to the appropriate initial and boundary conditions. Additionally, experiments are carried out using a 19.5-kHz piston source with a 40-mm aperture and various aluminum disks of different sizes. The measured levitation distance agrees well with the theory, which is different from a conventional theory, and the levitation distance is not inversely proportional to the square root of the surface density of the levitated disk in a strict sense.

Abstract:A two-axis acoustic levitator can be used to generate a standing pressure wave capable of levitating solid and liquid particles at appropriate input conditions. This work proposes a simulation framework to investigate the two-axis levitation particle stability using a commercial, computational fluid dynamics software based on the harmonic solution to the acoustic wave equation. The simulation produced predictions of the standing wave that include a strong "+" shaped pattern of nodes and anti-nodes that are aligned with the levitator axes. To verify the simulation, a levitator was built and used to generate the standing wave. The field was probed with a microphone and a motorized-scanning system. After scaling the simulated pressure to the measured pressure, the magnitudes of the sound pressure level at corresponding high-pressure locations were different by no more than 5%. This is the first time a measurement of a two-axis levitator standing pressure wave has been presented and shown to verify simulations. As an additional verification, the authors consulted high speed camera measurements of a reference-levitator transducer, which was found to have a maximum peak-to-peak displacement of 50 ± 5 <i>μ</i>m. The reference-levitator is known to levitate water at 160 dB. The system for this work was simulated to match the operation of the reference-levitator so that it produced sound pressure levels of 160 dB. This pressure was achieved when the transducer maximum peak-to-peak displacement was 50.8 <i>µ</i>m. The agreement between the two levitators' displacements provides good justification that the modeling approach presented here produces reliable results.

Abstract:Standing wave acoustic levitation transportation technique has been widely used in many research areas. In this work, two Langevin-type piezoelectric transducers’ central lines are mounted at a certain angle which is named a contraposition transducer array. The levitator developed in this work is constructed using the array and a reflector. Accordingly, a standing wave acoustic field is formed to levitate and transport particles by optimizing the angle between central lines of the two transducers, the distance between the two transducers’ output and their reflectors, the exciting phase differential on the two transducers. In this standing wave acoustic field, the trapped objects can be levitated and transported by modulating the exciting phase difference of the two transducers. In this work, the locations of the levitated particles are acquired by a high speed video camera and are clarified using the Hough Circle algorithm. The experiments carried out by the authors have demonstrated the effects of the levitator’s structure parameters (including the angle between central lines of the two transducers, the distance between the two transducers’ output and the reflector) on the transportation trajectory.

Abstract:Acoustic levitation is an interesting technique used for levitating small objects/materials using sound waves. In this study, lateral movement of levitating particles is demonstrated experimentally and numerically. The method can simultaneously move multiple particles and the paper demonstrates levitation for three particles. Initially, an ultrasonic tweezer with a resonance frequency of 40 kHz is used to levitate three particles of average weight of 0.15 mg each. The experimental design is based on numerical simulation. Further, the levitated particles are moved in a lateral direction using two ultrasonic tweezers setup by manipulating the phase of one of the tweezers using Arduino Nano. As evident by simulations, the movement takes place due to the interference of waves leading to the movement of pressure node. The lateral movement of particles can be controlled and even reversed by changing the phase difference

This paper gives a detailed introduction of this medium and low frequency sound velocity measurement device and the results of sound velocity measurement obtained by comparative method. This device can be used for sound velocity detection of other media in water.

Abstract:Near-field acoustic levitation (NFAL) has been used in noncontact handling and transportation of small objects to avoid contamination. We have performed a theoretical analysis based on nonuniform vibrating surface to quantify the levitation force produced by the air film and also conducted experimental tests to verify our model. Modal analysis was performed using ANSYS on the flexural plate radiator to obtain its natural frequency of desired mode, which is used to design the measurement system. Then, the levitation force was calculated as a function of levitation distance based on squeeze gas film theory using measured amplitude and phase distributions on the vibrator surface. Compared with previous fluid-structural analyses using a uniform piston motion, our model based on the nonuniform radiating surface of the vibrator is more realistic and fits better with experimentally measured levitation force.

Abstract:A low-impact acoustic levitation system has been developed to study immobilised single drops in liquid-liquid systems. The ability to observe liquid drops several millimetres in diameter for days enables fundamental research into a wide range of mechanisms. Non-invasive optical measurements with excellent optical accessibility are possible. This experimental work provides the basis for mass transfer studies, emphasizing the precise volume determination, signal noise, reproducibility, and the impact of the acoustic field on the drop and its surrounding environment. The setup can be effectively controlled and proves beneficial for research objectives provided that all liquid phases are entirely degassed, and there are no compressible voids present within the liquids. In addition to the precise, uniform, and reliable measurement conditions, we observed no acoustic streaming in the proximity of the drop and there was no significant vibration of the drop. Qualitative observations using rainbow schlieren deflectometry indicate that the nodal or anti-nodal planes of the standing waves can act as barriers to the dispersion of inhomogeneous dissolved substances in the continuous phase.

Abstract:The sound velocity in a medium is closely related to its material properties, including its composition, structure, density, pressure, and temperature. Various methods have been developed to determine the sound velocity through materials. Among them, a strategy based on ultrasound resonance frequency has been most widely used due to the simplicity. However, it requires a transducer with a wide bandwidth to cover enough resonance frequencies to perform the consequent calculations. In this paper, we develop a resonance method for measuring sound velocity, using multi-frequency narrow-band transducers breaking through the limitation of transducer bandwidth on the utilization of the resonance method. We use different transducers at different center frequencies and with different bandwidth to measure the sound velocity in 100-μm and 400-μm thick steel pieces. The measurement results of different combinations are in good agreement, verifying that the use of multi-frequency narrow-band transducer combinations. Given that most therapeutic transducers have a narrow bandwidth, this method can be used during intracranial ultrasound stimulation to optimize targeting by non-invasively measuring the sound velocity in the skull, especially at thinner locations.
Realization of a Contactless Acoustic Levitation Motor via Doublet Mode Control and Autoresonance

Abstract:This paper demonstrates analytically and experimentally an acoustic levitation motor which has the ability to levitate and rotate an object in the air without mechanical contact. To realize such a device two core methods are applied simultaneously; (i) resonance tracking with an Autoresonance feedback loop, (ii) generation of controlled structural traveling waves. The purpose of the first method is to achieve near-field acoustic levitation, which can levitate an object of a few kilograms. In this research, this is accomplished through high amplitude vibration of an aluminum annulus at ultrasonic frequencies (~30kHz). For high efficiency, the annulus is designed to have a very high Q value, and operating even slightly off resonance ceases levitation. Compounding this is the fact that the natural frequency constantly drifts as ambient conditions and loading change. To accommodate such a drift, and produce stable levitation automatically, a resonance tracking feedback loop is employed here. Simultaneously, the purpose of the second method is to achieve propulsion forces on the levitated object by propagating and controlling traveling waves in the aluminum annulus to create a thin layer of rotating air beneath the levitated body. Even though a single vibration mode can produce only standing waves, an axisymmetric structure possesses two modes per natural frequency, and excitation of a doublet mode pair can generate effective travelling waves. The present paper develops the theory behind the use of the Autoresonance feedback method for achieving constant levitation and propagating travelling waves in co- and counter rotating directions. It will be shown that all this can be accomplished with only single sensor. The result is a stable, repeatable and a highly controllable contactless acoustic levitation motor.

Study on Transient Properties of Levitated Object in Near-Field Acoustic Levitation

Abstract:A new approach to the study on the transient properties of the levitated object in near-field acoustic levitation（NFAL） is presented.In this article,the transient response characteristics,including the levitated height of an object with radius of 24 mm and thickness of 5 mm,the radial velocity and pressure difference of gas at the boundary of clearance between the levitated object and radiating surface（squeeze film）,is calculated according to several velocity amplitudes of radiating surface.First,the basic equations in fluid areas on Arbitrary Lagrange-Euler（ALE） form are numerically solved by using streamline upwind petrov galerkin（SUPG） finite elements method.Second,the formed algebraic equations and solid control equations are solved by using synchronous alternating method to gain the transient messages of the levitated object and gas in the squeeze film.Through theoretical and numerical analyses,it is found that there is a oscillation time in the transient process and that the response time does not simply increase with the increasing of velocity amplitudes of radiating surface.More investigations in this paper are helpful for the understanding of the transient properties of levitated object in NFAL,which are in favor of enhancing stabilities and responsiveness of levitated object.

Abstract:The influence of acoustic levitation on friction in air is studied, and the dynamic model of friction couple is set up. Based on this model the influence of acoustic levitation on friction reduction is calculated. The relative contacting time between friction couple in air and in vacuum have been measured experimentally, which shows that the influence of acoustic levitation can't be neglected when the preload between friction couple is small.

Abstract:Contactless manipulation technique that is capable of transporting and manipulating of small particles is highly attractive in studying of many physical phenomena and biochemical processes. We present an acoustic levitator model used to levitate and transport samples. The finite element analysis and the parametric optimization of the levitator model are made with the software ANSYS. The effect of the distance H between the radiating plate and reflector and the vibration velocity v of the two LPTs on levitating and transporting samples is systematically investigated. The numerical results show that the transmission direction of the sample was determined by H and the vibration velocity of the LPTs. The optimal distance H for transporting sample is 9mm, and the sample can be transported from one LPT to another by changing the vibration velocity of the LPTs. As a result, a new LPT exciting approach is developed to realize the levitation and horizontal transportation of the sample.

Abstract:The conventional acoustic holography method is not suitable for the measurement of the moving sound source, because the Doppler effect exists in the sound signal, and the beam-forming approach is unable to make quantitative analysis. The approach proposed in this paper establishes the time-space relation between the measurement field, the radiating field and the acoustic holography field, and puts forward a method of nonlinear time-mapping between the sound source and the measured signal. Based on the acoustic source eigen-function, the acoustic pressure distribution of the acoustic holography field in the time domain is obtained, in which the Doppler effect is eliminated. The sound field of the surface of the moving sound source is reconstructed by acoustic holography method, and the quantitative analysis of the major sound source is realized. This method has been used in the experiment of measuring the moving sound sources, and satisfactory results proved the effectiveness of the method.
Acoustic Standing Wave Field Measurement Using a Laser Doppler Vibrometer Based on the Hankel Fourier Algorithm

Abstract:Measuring the acoustic pressure in an acoustic standing wave field is essential as a means to study acoustic levitation and other related techniques. In this work it was shown that the pressure of an acoustic standing wave field could be measured on line, in a non-contact way, using a scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV), where the LDV output is proportional to the integral of the acoustic pressure over the laser path. In the method used to measure acoustic pressure, first, the LDV outputs, υsLDV and υeLDV, are obtained by using both COMSOL-MATLAB-based (CM) co-simulation and through experimental measurements. Next, the acoustic pressure distribution is obtained using a MATLAB-based programme and this is reconstructed by using υsLDV and υeLDV, based on the Hankel-Fourier (HF) algorithm. Further, the acoustic pressure measurements obtained by using these two methods are cross compared, in that way to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method presented.
