Abstract:Architectural and structural design work of roof system of Yueqing Olympic Center are roughly reviewed in the present paper.The stadium with lunar shape adopts a novel type of spatial cable-frames. System constitution of this stadium is different because of braced radial cables and open-mouth hoop cable. The gymnasium and swimming arena adopt a new latticed-shell-string system with non-vertical compression bars and spatial hoop cables.Structural design of steel works of Yueqing Olympic center is in accordance with mechanical rules and restrictions but not constrained by common concepts.It is a little challengeable in some aspects.The present paper aims at roughly review of some key design techniques of new types of large-span spatial structures.Emphasis is put on the process of architectural design and structural design when they do not coincided with each other at the preliminary design stage.

Abstract:New gymnasium is a multi-purpose sport facility, which is mainly built for sport teaching and training. This paper firstly outlines the overall architecture, then focuses on design procedures, structural layout selection optimization, static load analysis, buckling evaluation, joint detailing, steel frame member fabrication and erection, fabric cutting and patterning, membrane installation, construction management and so on. Some successful and foul experiences are finally summarized.

Abstract:Cable-frame type of suspended single-layer reticulated shells with free surface proposed by the author of the present paper is a novel type of large-span hybrid spatial structures. The whole design procedure regarding a practical gymnasium steel roof using this structural system is presented. System constitution including form finding of the upper structure and shape determination analysis of the lower cable-bar system is given out in details and emphasized. Load/action effects are thoroughly summarized for member sections design. A special joint design when diagonal cables penetrating the corresponding upper steel beam member is also brought forward. Hopefully the present paper could benefit the further research and practical engineering on hybrid spatial structures.

Abstract:Beam-String Structures are a typical planar hybrid spatial structures.It has been popularly used in practical roof system of airport terminals,exhibition centers and sports arenas in recent years in China.However it is really a pity that the theoretical and experimental research,the corresponding provisions in current Chinese codes of practice are not keeping steps with the practical engineering.In general shape determination problem including force finding analysis and form finding analysis,the curve shape of the lower cable of Beam-String Structures has not been well investigated.The present paper starts with the discussion of the reference configuration for computational analysis of Beam-String Structures.Emphasis is put on a systematical computational analysis of this kind of structures in practical engineering.A novel strategy for shape determination that can be conducted conveniently in computation or even by hand is put forward.Further work on beam-string structures is suggested.

Abstract:Cable-net membrane structure is one of the most advanced projects in the field of lightweight space structures in recent years in China.This paper firstly outlines the novel cable-net system and form-finding of cable-net and membrane.The prestress optimization are then carried out.And the structural analysis are performed comprehensively for various load cases.The joints and detail of some key cable-net connectors are depicted.The installation procedure and pre-stretching method are proposed for future use.The effects of the cable length error of manufacture are finally evaluated on the prestress and form prestress and key point location.

Abstract:The cable dome structure is a highly efficient prestressed space structure with reasonable force, attractive shape, and large spanning capacity. It is increasingly widely used in stadiums, exhibition halls, terminals, and other large-scale public buildings and the roof structure of various transport hub projects. To solve the problem of weak overall structural stability of the traditional cable dome structure, a new type of prestressed space structure is proposed - heptagonal six-five-strut alternated cable dome with an inner hole. The composition of the structural system was given and a theoretical study of the distribution of structural prestress was carried out; based on the symmetry and periodicity conditions, the initial prestress distribution of the structure was accurately calculated using the node balance method, and the formulae for the geometric parameters of the structural cable-strut were derived; the numerical model was established by using the finite element software ANSYS 2022 R1, and the force characteristics of the structure under full-span uniform load, half span uniform live load, wind load, and temperature were studied. The effects of structural prestress, overall shape, and support stiffness, totaling three categories and six parameters, on the structural mechanical performance of the internal force of the member, node displacement, and support reaction force were analysed in detail and the sensitivity of the parameters is assessed quantitatively, accordingly, the values of the main design parameters such as thick-span ratio are given as suggestions. The analysis results show that the new structural system has a high load-carrying capacity and deformation resistance, and its proposal provides a new scheme and new ideas for the selection and design of the cable dome.
Analysis and experiment on erection process of a crescent-shaped cable-truss canopy structure

Abstract:The erection method was investigated for a novel crescent-shaped cable-truss tensile system used as a canopy structure in Yueqing Stadium, Zhejiang Province. An erection programme was suggested, in which members were assembled on a platform near the ground, and then the whole structure was hoisted by dragging the upper and lower radial cables in turn. Numerical simulation of the hoisting process was carried out using the dynamic relaxation method. A suitable shape of the erecting platform was calculated for minimizing the distance of dragging lines. The properties of the structural geometry and internal forces of members in hoisting process were analyzed, and some local struts were found to be toppled over. By means of a 1:15 scaled model of the canopy structure of Yueqing Stadium, a hoisting experiment for the suggested erection programme was carried out. The nodal coordinates of loop cable, the axial forces of loop cable and radial cables at each hoisting step were measured, and well accorded with the numerical solutions by comparison. The results of numerical computation and model test revealed that the final design configuration of this cable-truss tensile system could be reached by the suggested erection programme. The kinematic path of the system during hoisting was stable in general.

Abstract:The roof system of Yueqing Gymnasium adopts a new hybrid space structure called the double inner and outer latticed shell string structure. The prestressing construction of this structure is complex. Thus, the whole process analysis for the pretensioning scheme and cable breaking should be performed prior to construction. The tension processes and effects of local component failures were studied on the basis of the structural model test. The effects of the construction sequences of the inner inclined cables and outer radial cables were tested, and the effects of the tensioned outer radial cables were investigated. The analysis and test results show that the internal forces and structural deformations vary linearly during the construction tension processes, and that the structural configuration is stable. The structure can be tensioned to the designed configuration successfully with reasonable construction sequences and programs. Finally, the local component failures of the test model were studied, and the effects of the cable, strut, and sling breakings on structural performance in different positions were discussed. The test results of the cable and strut breaking show that the double inner and outer latticed shell string structure has excellent structural rigidity and has a certain capability for resisting progressive collapse.

Abstract:Structural design of a practical spherical suspendome with the diameter of 122m was carried out in China Construction (Shenzhen) Design International (CCDI) in 2006. The suspendome structure is a new type of large-span spatial structure which is widely used in the sports buildings. Several suspendome structures have been constructed as the structural roof in the sports arena in China in recent years. As is known to all, prestresses in the cable-strut system are crucial to the tensegric system, and the determination of prestress level and distribution is somewhat complicated. However, no provisions has been provided by current chinese design codes of practice for the suspendome structure. This paper gives out the detailed prestress design procedure for the practical sports arena which is to be built in Jinan City, China. General purpose finite element package ANSYS is utilized for the analyses. The self-internal-force mode and the prestress level ratio among three ring cables are investigated to determine the prestress in the cable. Linear static analyses are then carried out to validate the prestress efficiency. It has been shown that prestress defined by this way has much influence on the deformation and the internal force of the upper reticulated shell structure. The linear elastic buckling and the geometrically nonlinear stability analysis are also presented. The snap-through phenomenon of the structure is investigated to determine the critical load carrying capacity of stability. The infulence of live load distribution patterns and imperfections on suspendome is addressed in details. The results from the studies can not only be refered for direct design use, and also for the design of similar hybrid structures.
Model Designing and Static Experimental Study on Double Inner and Outer Latticed Shell String Structure

Abstract:A 1/15 scale model of the roof of Yueqing Municipal Gymnasium was constructed in order to analyze the distribution characteristic of initial prestress and the performance under load cases of double inner and outer latticed shell string structure.The system was divided into two parts: cable-strut part and beam element part.A similar ratio of each parameter was determined in according to the similar principle.The components and nodes designing were conducted and the validity of model designing was discussed.The loading scheme was determined and the stress and displacement measuring points were arranged according to experimental contents and model characteristics.Full-span load cases were loaded on the model.The experimental results accorded well with the results of FEM analysis,which reveals that model designing,loading scheme and measuring plan can meet the experiment requirements.The internal force and the structure deformation are linear variation under full-span load cases,which reveals that the new type of latticed shell string structure has excellent bearing capacity and structure stiffness,and the structure system is safe and reliable.

Abstract:A new roof structure consisting of cable-mast tensile system and its suspended rigid reticulated structure is adopted in Zhejiang University Zijingang Gymnasium.The structural characteristics and design outlines of this roof structure are introduced.Structural stability under three typical load cases is analyzed according to the method suggested in China Code.The critical load-bearing capacities affected by the mode of initial imperfection and its magnitude as well as the axial stiffness of roof bracing members are further investigated.The results indicate that the roof structure maintains higher critical load-bearing capacity in NS half-span load case,but significant decreases occur in full-span and EW half-span load cases.The structural critical load-bearing capacity varies very limitedly with the mode of initial imperfection for all three load cases,however it is sensitive to the magnitude of initial imperfection for NS half-span load case.Over-increasing the stiffness of bracing members may decrease the stability of this roof structure instead.

Abstract:The gymnasium in Beijing Institute of Technology is composed of reinforced concrete frame-shear walls and a steel roof which is made up of two robust truss-arches and ten curved spatial trusses.The main truss-arches that support the steel roof are built from a number of parallelogram trusses while the curved spatial trusses are formed by the triangular section trusses.With the finite element analysis,the steel roof trusses have been analyzed in different load cases to check their strength.Linear elastic buckling load and ultimate load-carrying capacity of the main truss-arch have been obtained,and then its strength evaluation is given from the obtained results.The distribution of concrete stress and cracks at concrete abutments are analyzed under three different load cases,and some helpful suggestions are proposed finally.

Abstract:Preliminary design of a practical spherical cable dome with a diameter of 122m was carried out in China Construction (Shenzhen) Design International (CCDI) in 2006. Stiff roof (roof system with steel purlins and metallic skin) has been chosen for the project of a multifunctional gymnasium in preference to a flexible membrane (PTFE, ETFE). In the present paper the whole structural design procedure of this real cable dome is described: Load conditions, technical conditions required by performance based structural design, a novel force finding method-linear deduction method, optimal analysis of feasible initial internal force level, load analysis, nonlinear buckling analysis, cable breaking simulation, and construction animation. Technical details of joint design are also given out.

Abstract:A suspen-dome suppotred by concrete frame and canister below is adopted in the Jinan Olympic Center Gymnasium.Suspen-dome is a novel hybrid spatial structure which is composed of the upper single-layer latticed shell and the lower cable-struts.A brief instruction of the structural is presented first.Then the load analysis,modal analysis,linear and nonlinear buckling analysis of the suspen-dome are descirbed.The cable breaking anlysis of the structure is also carried out in order to prevent continue collcapse.Controlling parameters in each construction step of the suspen-dome are listed.Performance of the integral structure is also checked.

Abstract:The steel frame structure is adopted in the grandstand of Baoding Changcheng gymnasium and the triangle steel tube truss structure is used in the roof.The chord and web members are all seamless steel tube.The ANSYS software is used to analyze the structure bearing capcity under main load combinations.The results show that the structure internal force is rational and the member strength meets the requirement.The structure integer stability and dynamic behavior are analyzed.The calculation results show that the combination of dead load and the most disadvantage live distribution is the most disadvantage load condition,and the structure strength and integer stability meet the requirement.

Abstract:Retractable roof structures have been used widely in building engineering, especially in the field of large-sized gymnasium and multipurpose sport centers. Structures with retractable roofs have many work conditions and so they are different from conventional structures. This paper concisely introduces the general situation and structural form of a retractable roof structure for tennis stadium in Zhejiang province, discusses the rail problem in design of the structure, introduces the pulling method and its different loading cases in comparison with conventional structures. In this project,two kinds of structural analysis methods, the separate analysis method and the cooperating analysis method, have been compared based on the results of the displacements in three directions. The conclusion is that the result obtained from the sparate method is safer.

Abstract:Wind resistance, seismic resistance, temperature action and the stability of support columns are the difficult problems in the design of long-span truss string structure for the platform canopy of Beijing North Station. With finite element method, the mechanical performances of the canopy structure were analyzed under various load combinations. The results show that, the design of the components for truss string structure is mainly controlled by live load combination condition. While the design of support columns and foundation is controlled by seismic load combination condition. Cable force can be reduced under wind load. The mechanical properties of truss string structure will be weakened significantly while the cable completely loose. The wind-resistance performance of canopy structure can be improved through optimizing the vector height and vertical distance of truss string structure, the height of truss section and the sectional area of cable, etc. The Buckling modes and stable bearing capacity of canopy structure are directly affected by the stiffness of support column. Failure of the support column before the truss string structure above should be avoided in the design. Two new types of cast steel joints are developed, which can effectively solve such design problems as large mechanical force at cable joint and complex structure.

Abstract:The concourse of Shijiazhuang International Convention and Exhibition Center is a large and complex structural system,which is about 800m long and 100m wide.The roof supporting system consists of two structural forms of tree and Y shape column,and folded plate space truss is used for roof.The choice of structure styles was introduced,the loads value and analytical results were given,and in-depth analysis on some key issues in structure design was carried out.Based on the elastic-plastic analysis,the seismic performance of the structure was fully studied,and the effective length factor of the columns and the node design were introduced.
