Abstract:The critical group of a connected graph is closely related to the graph Laplacian, and is of high research value in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, statistical physics, and several other areas of mathematics. In this paper, we study the k-partite graphs and introduce an algorithm to get the structure of their critical groups by calculating the Smith normal forms of their graph Laplacians. When k is from 2 to 6, we characterize the structure of the critical groups completely, which can generalize the results of the complete bipartite graphs.

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

On the critical group of hinge graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite, connected, simple graph. The critical group $K(G)$, also known as the sandpile group, is the torsion subgroup of the cokernel of the graph Laplacian $\operatorname{cok}(L)$. We investigate a family of graphs with relatively simple non-cyclic critical group with an end goal of understanding whether multiple divisors, i.e., formal linear combinations of vertices of $G$, generate $K(G)$. These graphs, referred to as hinge graphs, can be intuitively understood by taking multiple base shapes and ``gluing" them together by a single shared edge and two corresponding shared vertices. In the case where all base shapes are identical, we compute the explicit structure of the critical group. Additionally, we compute the order of three special divisors. We prove the structure of the critical group of hinge graphs when variance in the number of vertices of each base shape is allowed, generalizing many of the aforementioned results.

Abstract:A graph is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We construct a new infinite families of $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs for all $k\ge 6$. Our construction generalizes known constructions for $4$-vertex-critical $P_7$-free graphs and $5$-vertex-critical $P_5$-free graphs and is in contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs. In fact, our construction is actually even more well-structured, being $(2P_2,K_3+P_1,C_5)$-free.

Abstract:The pebbling number of a graph G, f(G), is the least p such that, however p pebbles are placed on the vertices of G, we can move a pebble to any vertex by a sequence of moves, each move taking two pebbles off one vertex and placing one on an adjacent vertex. It is conjectured that for all graphs G and H, f(G× H)≤ f(G)f(H). If the graph G satisfies the odd two-pebbling property, we will prove that f(C_4k+3× G)≤ f(C_4k+3)f(G) and f(M(C_2n)× G)≤ f(M(C_2n))f(G), where C_4k+3 is the odd cycle of order 4k+3 and M(C_2n) is the middle graph of the even cycle C_2n.

Abstract:Let $\gamma_t(G)$ be the total domination number of graph $G$, a graph $G$ is $k$-total domination vertex critical (or\ just\ $k$-$\gamma_t$-critical) if $\gamma_t(G)=k$, and for any vertex $v$ of $G$ that is not adjacent to a vertex of degree one, $\gamma_t(G-v)=k-1$. Mojdeh and Rad \cite{MR06} proposed an open problem: Does there exist a 3-$\gamma_t$-critical graph $G$ of order $\Delta(G)+3$ with $\Delta(G)$ odd? In this paper, we prove that there exists a 3-$\gamma_t$-critical graph $G$ of order $\Delta(G)+3$ with odd $\Delta(G)\geq 9$.

Abstract:Let $\textrm{cr}(G)$ denote the crossing number of a graph $G$. The well-known Zarankiewicz's conjecture (ZC) asserted $\textrm{cr}(K_{m,n})$ in 1954. In 1971, Harborth gave a conjecture (HC) on $\textrm{cr}(K_{x_1,...,x_n})$. HC on $K_{1,m,n}$ is verified if ZC is true by Ho et al. in 2021. In this paper, we showed the following results: If both $m$ and $n$ are even, then \[\textrm{cr}(K_{1,1,m,n})\geq \frac{1}{2}(\textrm{cr}(K_{m+1,n+3})+\textrm{cr}(K_{m+3,n+1})-mn-\frac{1}{4}(m^2+n^2));\] If both $m$ and $n$ are odd, then \[\textrm{cr}(K_{1,1,m,n})\geq \frac{1}{2}(\textrm{cr}(K_{1,m+1,n+1})+\textrm{cr}(K_{2,m,n})-\frac{1}{4}(m+1)(n+1)+1);\] If $m$ is even and $n$ is odd, then \begin{equation}\nonumber \begin{split} \textrm{cr}(K_{1,1,m,n})&\geq \frac{1}{4}(\textrm{cr}(K_{m+1,n+2})+\textrm{cr}(K_{m+3,n+2})+2\textrm{cr}(K_{2,m,n}) \\&-m(n+1)-\frac{1}{4}(n+1)^2). \end{split} \end{equation} The lower bounds in our result imply that if both $m$ and $n$ are even and ZC is true, then HC on $K_{1,1,m,n}$ holds; if at least one of $m$ and $n$ is odd and both ZC and HC on $K_{2,m,n}$ are true, then HC on $K_{1,1,m,n}$ holds.

Critical classes of power graphs and reconstruction of directed power graphs

Abstract:In a graph $\Gamma=(V,E)$, we consider the common closed neighbourhood of a subset of vertices and use this notion to introduce a Moore closure operator in $V.$ We also consider the closed twin equivalence relation in which two vertices are equivalent if they have the same closed neighbourhood. Those notions are deeply explored when $\Gamma$ is the power graph associated with a finite group $G$. In that case, among the corresponding closed twin equivalence classes, we introduce the concepts of plain, compound and critical classes. The study of critical classes, together with properties of the Moore closure operator, allow us to correct a mistake in the proof of {\rm \cite[Theorem 2 ]{Cameron_2}} and to deduce a simple algorithm to reconstruct the directed power graph of a finite group from its undirected counterpart, as asked in \cite[Question 2]{GraphsOnGroups}.

Abstract:In this paper we study the class of graphs $G_{m,n}$ that have the same degree sequence as two disjoint cliques $K_m$ and $K_n$, as well as the class $\overline G_{m,n}$ of the complements of such graphs. We establish various properties of $G_{m,n}$ and $\overline G_{m,n}$ related to recognition, connectivity, diameter, bipartiteness, Hamiltonicity, and pancyclicity. We also show that several classical optimization problems on these graphs are NP-hard.

Abstract:Let $V:=(\mathbb{F}_q)^d$ be a $d$-dimensional vector space over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of order $q$. Fix positive integers $e_1,e_2$ satisfying $e_1+e_2=d$. Motivated by analysing a fundamental algorithm in computational group theory for recognising classical groups, we consider a certain quantity $P(e_1,e_2)$ which arises in both graph theory and group representation theory: $P(e_1,e_2)$ is the proportion of $3$-walks in the `bipartite $q$-Kneser graph' $\Gamma_{e_1,e_2}$ that are closed $3$-arcs. We prove that, for a group $G$ satisfying ${\rm SL}_d(q)\leqslant G\leqslant{\rm GL}_d(q)$, the proportion of certain element-pairs in $G$ called `$(e_1,e_2)$-stingray duos' which generate an irreducible subgroup is also equal to $P(e_1,e_2)$. We give an exact formula for $P(e_1,e_2)$, and prove that $1-q^{-1}-q^{-2}< P(e_1,e_2)< 1-q^{-1}-q^{-2}+2q^{-3}-2q^{-5}$ for $2\leqslant e_2\leqslant e_1$ and $q\geqslant2$.These bounds have implications for the complexity analysis of the state-of-the-art algorithms to recognise classical groups, which we discuss in the final section.

Minimizing the number of edges in $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs

Abstract:Given graphs $H_1, H_2$, a {red, blue}-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ is a critical coloring if $G$ has neither a red $H_1$ nor a blue $ H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G$ admits a critical coloring, but $G+e$ has no critical coloring for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that for all $k \ge 2 $ and $ n \ge k +\lfloor \sqrt {k-1} \rfloor +2$, if $G$ is a $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then \[e(G) \ge \frac{(k+2)n}2-3- \frac{(k-1)(k+ \lfloor \sqrt {k-2}\rfloor)}2.\] Moreover, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible for all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge3k+4$. It is worth noting that our constructions for the case when $ k$ is even have at least three different critical colorings. For $k=2$, we obtain the sharp bound for the minimum number of edges of $(C_4, K_{1,2})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge5 $ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $2n-3$ edges. Our proofs rely on the structural properties of $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs and a result of Ollmann on the minimum number of edges of $C_4$-saturated graphs.

Abstract:An arithmetical structure on a finite, connected graph without loops is an assignment of positive integers to the vertices that satisfies certain conditions. Associated to each of these is a finite abelian group known as its critical group. We show how to determine the critical group of an arithmetical structure on a star graph or complete graph in terms of the entries of the arithmetical structure. We use this to investigate which finite abelian groups can occur as critical groups of arithmetical structures on these graphs.
