Abstract:A graph G = (V, E) is a k-critical graph if G is not (k - 1)-colorable but every proper subgraph of G is (k - 1)-colorable. In this article, we construct a family of 4-critical planar graphs with n vertices and 7n-13/3 edges. As a consequence, this improves the bound for the maximum edge density attained by Abbott and Zhou. We conjecture that this is the largest edge density for a 4-critical planar graph. Abstract:Given graphs $H_1, H_2$, a {red, blue}-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ is a critical coloring if $G$ has neither a red $H_1$ nor a blue $ H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G$ admits a critical coloring, but $G+e$ has no critical coloring for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that for all $k \ge 2 $ and $ n \ge k +\lfloor \sqrt {k-1} \rfloor +2$, if $G$ is a $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then \[e(G) \ge \frac{(k+2)n}2-3- \frac{(k-1)(k+ \lfloor \sqrt {k-2}\rfloor)}2.\] Moreover, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible for all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge3k+4$. It is worth noting that our constructions for the case when $ k$ is even have at least three different critical colorings. For $k=2$, we obtain the sharp bound for the minimum number of edges of $(C_4, K_{1,2})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge5 $ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $2n-3$ edges. Our proofs rely on the structural properties of $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs and a result of Ollmann on the minimum number of edges of $C_4$-saturated graphs.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is \emph{uniquely k-colorable} if the chromatic number of $G$ is $k$ and $G$ has only one $k$-coloring up to permutation of the colors. A uniquely $k$-colorable graph $G$ is edge-critical if $G-e$ is not a uniquely $k$-colorable graph for any edge $e\in E(G)$. Mel'nikov and Steinberg [L. S. Mel'nikov, R. Steinberg, One counterexample for two conjectures on three coloring, Discrete Math. 20 (1977) 203-206] asked to find an exact upper bound for the number of edges in a edge-critical 3-colorable planar graph with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we give some properties of edge-critical uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs and prove that if $G$ is such a graph with $n(\geq6)$ vertices, then $|E(G)|\leq \frac{5}{2}n-6 $, which improves the upper bound $\frac{8}{3}n-\frac{17}{3}$ given by Matsumoto [N. Matsumoto, The size of edge-critical uniquely 3-colorable planar graphs, Electron. J. Combin. 20 (3) (2013) $\#$P49]. Furthermore, we find some edge-critical 3-colorable planar graphs which have $n(=10,12, 14)$ vertices and $\frac{5}{2}n-7$ edges.

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

Abstract:Every graph G=(V, E) considered in this paper consists of a finite set V of vertices and a finite set E of edges, together with an incidence function that associates each edge e ∈ E of G with an unordered pair of vertices of G which are called the ends of the edge e. A graph is said to be a planar graph if it can be drawn in the plane so that its edges intersect only at their ends. A proper k-vertex-coloring of a graph G=(V, E) is a mapping c : V⟶S (S is a set of k colors) such that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same colors. The famous Four Color Theorem states that a planar graph has a proper vertex-coloring with four colors. However, the current known proof for the Four Color Theorem is computer assisted. In addition, the correctness of the proof is still lengthy and complicated. In 2010, a simple O(n 2) time algorithm was provided to 4-color a 3-colorable planar graph. In this paper, we give an improved linear-time algorithm to either output a proper 4-coloring of G or conclude that G is not 3-colorable when an arbitrary planar graph G is given. Using this algorithm, we can get the proper 4-colorings of 3-colorable planar graphs, planar graphs with maximum degree at most five, and claw-free planar graphs.

Abstract:Given a graph G, a coloring c : V (G) → {1, …, k} such that c(u) = c(v) = i implies that vertices u and v are at distance greater than i, is called a packing coloring of G. The minimum number of colors in a packing coloring of G is called the packing chromatic number of G, and is denoted by χρ(G). In this paper, we propose the study of χρ-critical graphs, which are the graphs G such that for any proper subgraph H of G, χρ(H) < χρ(G). We characterize χρ-critical graphs with diameter 2, and χρ-critical block graphs with diameter 3. Furthermore, we characterize χρ-critical graphs with small packing chromatic number, and we also consider χρ-critical trees. In addition, we prove that for any graph G and every edge e ∈ E(G), we have (χρ(G)+1)/2 ≤ χρ(G−e) ≤ χρ(G), and provide a corresponding realization result, which shows that χρ(G − e) can achieve any of the integers between these bounds.

Abstract:A graph is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We construct a new infinite families of $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs for all $k\ge 6$. Our construction generalizes known constructions for $4$-vertex-critical $P_7$-free graphs and $5$-vertex-critical $P_5$-free graphs and is in contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs. In fact, our construction is actually even more well-structured, being $(2P_2,K_3+P_1,C_5)$-free.

Abstract:In this paper, by developing several new adjacency lemmas about a path on $4$ or $5$ vertices, we show that the average degree of 7-critical graphs is at least 6. It implies Vizing's planar graph conjecture for planar graphs with maximum degree $7$ and its extension to graphs embeddable in a surface with nonnegative Euler characteristic due to Sanders and Zhao (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 83 (2001) 201-212 and J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 87 (2003) 254-263) and Zhang (Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 467-495).

Abstract:A graph G is uniquely k-colorable if the chromatic number of G is k and G has only one k-coloring up to the permutation of the colors. For a plane graph G, two faces f 1 and f 2 of G are adjacent ( i , j )-faces if d ( f 1 ) = i, d ( f 2 ) = j, and f 1 and f 2 have a common edge, where d ( f ) is the degree of a face f. In this paper, we prove that every uniquely three-colorable plane graph has adjacent ( 3 , k )-faces, where k ≤ 5. The bound of five for k is the best possible. Furthermore, we prove that there exists a class of uniquely three-colorable plane graphs having neither adjacent ( 3 , i )-faces nor adjacent ( 3 , j )-faces, where i , j are fixed in { 3 , 4 , 5 } and i ≠ j. One of our constructions implies that there exists an infinite family of edge-critical uniquely three-colorable plane graphs with n vertices and 7 3 n - 14 3 edges, where n ( ≥ 11 ) is odd and n ≡ 2 ( mod 3 ).

Abstract:A $2$-distance $k$-coloring of a graph is a proper vertex $k$-coloring where vertices at distance at most 2 cannot share the same color. We prove the existence of a $2$-distance $4$-coloring for planar subcubic graphs with girth at least 21. We also show a construction of a planar subcubic graph of girth 11 that is not $2$-distance $4$-colorable.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $(G,H)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $G$ or $H$. We show that there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ when $H$ is any graph of order $4$ by showing finiteness in the three remaining open cases, those are the cases when $H$ is $2P_2$, $K_3+P_1$, and $K_4$. For the first two cases we actually prove the stronger results: $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k$ and that only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$. $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $P_5$, $P_3+cP_2$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$ and $c\ge 0$. To prove the latter result, we employ a novel application of Sperner's Theorem on the number of antichains in a partially ordered set. Our result for $K_4$ uses exhaustive computer search and is proved by showing the stronger result that every $(\text{co-gem, }K_4)$-free graph is $4$-colourable. Our results imply the existence of simple polynomial-time certifying algorithms to decide the $k$-colourability of (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ and all $H$ of order $4$ by searching the vertex-critical graphs as induced subgraphs.

Abstract:We say that a signed graph is $k$-critical if it is not $k$-colorable but every one of its proper subgraphs is $k$-colorable. Using the definition of colorability due to Naserasr, Wang, and Zhu that extends the notion of circular colorability, we prove that every $3$-critical signed graph on $n$ vertices has at least $\frac{3n-1}{2}$ edges, and that this bound is asymptotically tight. It follows that every signed planar or projective-planar graph of girth at least $6$ is (circular) $3$-colorable, and for the projective-planar case, this girth condition is best possible. To prove our main result, we reformulate it in terms of the existence of a homomorphism to the signed graph $C_{3}^*$, which is the positive triangle augmented with a negative loop on each vertex.

Multiple 3-Coloring, an Approach to 4-Coloring of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A planar graph can be embedded in a piecewise linear manifold, and the lattice on each linear piece can be colored with 3-coloring. If a planar graph can be colored with multiple 3-coloring, i.e. coloring the graph in pieces with different 3-color subsets of 4 colors, then the graph is 4-colorable. In this paper, multiple 3-coloring was introduced, and then the combination and partition of planar graphs for multiple 3-coloring was studied. The study reveals that planar graphs can generally be decomposed into independent subgraphs, and each subgraph can be triangulated into a symmetric structure for multiple 3-coloring.

Abstract:In 1965, Vizing proved that every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta\geq 8$ is edge $\Delta$-colorable. It is also proved that every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta=7$ is edge $\Delta$-colorable by Sanders and Zhao, independently by Zhang. In this paper, we extend the above results by showing that every $K_5$-minor free graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ at least seven is edge $\Delta$-colorable.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) if $\chi(G)= k$ ($\chi_\ell(G)= k$, $\chi_\mathrm{DP}(G)= k$) and for every proper subgraph $G'$ of $G$, $\chi(G')<k$ ($\chi_\ell(G')< k$, $\chi_\mathrm{DP}(G')<k$). Let $f(n, k)$ ($f_\ell(n, k), f_\mathrm{DP}(n,k)$) denote the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-critical (list $k$-critical, DP $k$-critical) graph. The main result of this paper is that if $n\geq 6$ and $n\not\in\{7,10\}$, then $$f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)>\left(3 + \frac{1}{5} \right) \frac{n}{2}. $$ This is the first bound on $f_\mathrm{DP}(n,4)$ that is asymptotically better than the well-known bound $f(n,4)\geq \left(3 + \frac{1}{13} \right) \frac{n}{2}$ by Gallai from 1963. The result also yields a better bound on $f_{\ell}(n,4)$ than the one known before.

Abstract:The Four-Color Conjecture says that the chromatic number of planar graphs is not more than 4.Indeed,it suffices to prove that each maximal planar graph is 4-clorable.For this reason,since 1891 many scholars have been devoted to the research on such graphs from different points of view.In this paper,some of important results with regard to maximal planar graphs are to be reviewed and analyzed in detail,including the problems of degree sequence,Hamilton characteristic,chromatic polynomial,generating operation system,enumeration,flip operation, decomposition and covering,spanning tree,and some algorithms.Based on the understanding of the research status of the maximal planar graphs,we propose several problems on such graphs in connection with their colorings.These problems intend to reveal the relationship between the structures and the colorings of maximal planar graphs,which may be usful for further study on the Four-Color Problem.

Abstract:Hu and Li investigate the signed graph version of Erd$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$s problem: Is there a constant $c$ such that every signed planar graph without $k$-cycles, where $4\leq k\leq c$, is $3$-colorable and prove that each signed planar graph without cycles of length from 4 to 8 is 3-colorable. We give a very short and simple proof of this result and improve it, based on a recent observation.

Abstract:We study the impact of forbidding short cycles to the edge density of $k$-planar graphs; a $k$-planar graph is one that can be drawn in the plane with at most $k$ crossings per edge. Specifically, we consider three settings, according to which the forbidden substructures are $3$-cycles, $4$-cycles or both of them (i.e., girth $\ge 5$). For all three settings and all $k\in\{1,2,3\}$, we present lower and upper bounds on the maximum number of edges in any $k$-planar graph on $n$ vertices. Our bounds are of the form $c\,n$, for some explicit constant $c$ that depends on $k$ and on the setting. For general $k \geq 4$ our bounds are of the form $c\sqrt{k}n$, for some explicit constant $c$. These results are obtained by leveraging different techniques, such as the discharging method, the recently introduced density formula for non-planar graphs, and new upper bounds for the crossing number of $2$-- and $3$-planar graphs in combination with corresponding lower bounds based on the Crossing Lemma.
