Abstract:For two given graphs $G$ and $H$ the planar Ramsey number $PR(G,H)$ is the smallest integer $n$ such that every planar graph $F$ on $n$ vertices either contains a copy of $G$, or its complement contains a copy of $H$. In this paper, we first characterize some structural properties of $C_4$-free planar graphs, and then we determine all planar Ramsey numbers $PR(C_4, W_n)$, for $n\ge 3$.

Abstract:We compute the canonical integrals associated to wheel graphs, and prove that they are proportional to odd zeta values. From this we deduce that wheel classes define explicit non-zero classes in: the locally finite homology of the general linear group $\GL_n(\ZZ)$ in both odd and even ranks, the homology of the moduli spaces of tropical curves, and the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties. We deduce the existence of a doubly infinite family of auxiliary classes in the even commutative graph complex.

Abstract:A wheel is a graph formed by a chordless cycle and a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. We prove that every 3-connected graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is in fact minimally 3-connected. We give a new proof of a theorem of Thomassen and Toft: every graph that does not contain a wheel as a subgraph is 3-colorable.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $(G,H)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $G$ or $H$. We show that there are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ when $H$ is any graph of order $4$ by showing finiteness in the three remaining open cases, those are the cases when $H$ is $2P_2$, $K_3+P_1$, and $K_4$. For the first two cases we actually prove the stronger results: $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k$ and that only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, paw$+P_1$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$. $\bullet$ There are only finitely many $k$-vertex-critical (co-gem, $P_5$, $P_3+cP_2$)-free graphs for all $k\ge 1$ and $c\ge 0$. To prove the latter result, we employ a novel application of Sperner's Theorem on the number of antichains in a partially ordered set. Our result for $K_4$ uses exhaustive computer search and is proved by showing the stronger result that every $(\text{co-gem, }K_4)$-free graph is $4$-colourable. Our results imply the existence of simple polynomial-time certifying algorithms to decide the $k$-colourability of (co-gem, $H$)-free graphs for all $k$ and all $H$ of order $4$ by searching the vertex-critical graphs as induced subgraphs.

Some Results on Critical ($P_5,H$)-free Graphs

Abstract:Given two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$, a graph is $(H_1,H_2)$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H_1$ nor $H_2$. A graph $G$ is $k$-vertex-critical if every proper induced subgraph of $G$ has chromatic number less than $k$, but $G$ has chromatic number $k$. The study of $k$-vertex-critical graphs for specific graph classes is an important topic in algorithmic graph theory because if the number of such graphs that are in a given hereditary graph class is finite, then there exists a polynomial-time certifying algorithm to decide the $k$-colorability of a graph in the class. In this paper, we show that: (1) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,4}+P_1)$-free graphs; (2) for $s \ge 1$, there are finitely many 5-vertex-critical $(P_5,K_{1,s}+P_1)$-free graphs; (3) for $k \ge 1$, there are finitely many $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,\overline{K_3+2P_1})$-free graphs. Moreover, we characterize all $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,H)$-free graphs where $H \in \{K_{1,3}+P_1,K_{1,4}+P_1,\overline{K_3+2P_1}\}$ using an exhaustive graph generation algorithm.

For graphs G and H , the star-critical Ramsey number r * ( G, H ) is the minimum integer k such that any red/blue edge-coloring of K r −1 ⨆ K 1, k contains a red copy of G or a blue copy of H , where r is the classical Ramsey number R ( G, H ). Let C m denote a cycle of order m and W n a wheel of order n + 1. Hook (2010) proved that r * ( W n , C 3 ) = n + 3 for n ≥ 6. In this paper, we show that r * ( W n , C m ) = n + 3 for m odd, m ≥ 5 and n ≥ 3( m − 1)/2 + 2.
On 4-critical t-perfect graphs

Abstract:It is an open question whether the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs is bounded by a constant. The largest known value for this parameter is 4, and the only example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph, due to Laurent and Seymour, is the complement of the line graph of the prism $\Pi$ (a graph is 4-critical if it has chromatic number 4 and all its proper induced subgraphs are 3-colorable). In this paper, we show a new example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph: the complement of the line graph of the 5-wheel $W_5$. Furthermore, we prove that these two examples are in fact the only 4-critical $t$-perfect graphs in the class of complements of line graphs. As a byproduct, an analogous and more general result is obtained for $h$-perfect graphs in this class. The class of $P_6$-free graphs is a proper superclass of complements of line graphs and appears as a natural candidate to further investigate the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs. We observe that a result of Randerath, Schiermeyer and Tewes implies that every $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graph is 4-colorable. Finally, we use results of Chudnovsky et al to show that $\overline{L(W_5)}$ and $\overline{L(\Pi)}$ are also the only 4-critical $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graphs.
HIST-Critical Graphs and Malkevitch's Conjecture

Abstract:In a given graph, a HIST is a spanning tree without $2$-valent vertices. Motivated by developing a better understanding of HIST-free graphs, i.e. graphs containing no HIST, in this article's first part we study HIST-critical graphs, i.e. HIST-free graphs in which every vertex-deleted subgraph does contain a HIST (e.g. a triangle). We give an almost complete characterisation of the orders for which these graphs exist and present an infinite family of planar examples which are $3$-connected and in which nearly all vertices are $4$-valent. This leads naturally to the second part in which we investigate planar $4$-regular graphs with and without HISTs, motivated by a conjecture of Malkevitch, which we computationally verify up to order $22$. First we enumerate HISTs in antiprisms, whereafter we present planar $4$-regular graphs with and without HISTs, obtained via line graphs.

Infinite families of $k$-vertex-critical ($P_5$, $C_5$)-free graphs

Abstract:A graph is $k$-vertex-critical if $\chi(G)=k$ but $\chi(G-v)<k$ for all $v\in V(G)$. We construct a new infinite families of $k$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs for all $k\ge 6$. Our construction generalizes known constructions for $4$-vertex-critical $P_7$-free graphs and $5$-vertex-critical $P_5$-free graphs and is in contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many $5$-vertex-critical $(P_5,C_5)$-free graphs. In fact, our construction is actually even more well-structured, being $(2P_2,K_3+P_1,C_5)$-free.

More results on the spectral radius of graphs with no odd wheels

Abstract:For a graph $G$, the spectral radius $\lambda_{1}(G)$ of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. An odd wheel $W_{2k+1}$ with $k\geq2$ is a graph obtained from a cycle of order $2k$ by adding a new vertex connecting to all the vertices of the cycle. Let ${\rm SPEX}(n,W_{2k+1})$ be the set of $W_{2k+1}$-free graphs of order $n$ with the maximum spectral radius. Very recently, Cioabă, Desai and Tait \cite{CDT2} characterized the graphs in ${\rm SPEX}(n,W_{2k+1})$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $k\geq2$ and $k\neq4,5$. And they left the case $k=4,5$ as a problem. In this paper, we settle this problem. Moreover, we completely characterize the graphs in ${\rm SPEX}(n,W_{2k+1})$ when $k\geq4$ is even and $n\equiv2~(\mod4)$ is sufficiently large. Consequently, the graphs in ${\rm SPEX}(n,W_{2k+1})$ are characterized completely for any $k\geq2$ and sufficiently large $n$.

Abstract:We say that a graph $G$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision if some subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to a $K_4$-subdivision and whose faces are all odd holes of $G$. For a number $\ell\geq 2$, let $\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2\ell+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2\ell+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq2}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ is $3$-colorable. Recently, Chudnovsky et al. and Wu et al., respectively, proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_2$ and $\mathcal{G}_3$ is $3$-colorable. In this paper, we prove that no $4$-vertex-critical graph in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ has an odd $K_4$-subdivision. Using this result, Chen proved that all graphs in $\bigcup_{\ell\geq5}\mathcal{G}_{\ell}$ are $3$-colorable.

Abstract:Truemper configurations are four types of graphs (namely thetas, wheels, prisms and pyramids) that play an important role in the proof of several decomposition theorems for hereditary graph classes. In this paper, we prove two structure theorems: one for graphs with no thetas, wheels and prisms as induced subgraphs, and one for graphs with no thetas, wheels and pyramids as induced subgraphs. A consequence is a polynomial time recognition algorithms for these two classes. In Part II of this series we generalize these results to graphs with no thetas and wheels as induced subgraphs, and in Parts III and IV, using the obtained structure, we solve several optimization problems for these graphs.

Abstract:Distinctive power of the alliance polynomial has been studied in previous works, for instance, it has been proved that the empty, path, cycle, complete, complete without one edge and star graphs are characterized by its alliance polynomial. Moreover, it has been proved that the family of alliance polynomial of regular graphs with small degree is a very special one, since it does not contain alliance polynomial of graphs other than regular graph with the same degree. In this work we prove that the alliance polynomial also determines the wheel graphs.

Abstract:For two graphs G and H, the Ramsey number R(G, H) is the smallest integer n such that for any n-vertex graph, either it contains G or its complement contains H. Let Sn$$S_{n}$$ be a star of order n and Ws,m$$W_{s,m}$$ be a generalised wheel Ks∨Cm.$$K_{s}\vee C_{m}.$$ Previous studies by Wang and Chen (Graphs Comb 35(1):189–193, 2019) and Chng et al. (Discret Math 344(8):112440, 2021) imply that a tree is Ws,4$$W_{s,4}$$-good, Ws,5$$W_{s,5}$$-good, Ws,6$$W_{s,6}$$-good, and Ws,7$$W_{s,7}$$-good for s⩾2.$$s\geqslant 2.$$ In this paper, we study the Ramsey numbers R(Sn,Ws,8),$$R(S_{n}, W_{s,8}),$$ and our results indicate that trees are not always Ws,8$$W_{s,8}$$-good.

Abstract:Given a graph G, a coloring c : V (G) → {1, …, k} such that c(u) = c(v) = i implies that vertices u and v are at distance greater than i, is called a packing coloring of G. The minimum number of colors in a packing coloring of G is called the packing chromatic number of G, and is denoted by χρ(G). In this paper, we propose the study of χρ-critical graphs, which are the graphs G such that for any proper subgraph H of G, χρ(H) < χρ(G). We characterize χρ-critical graphs with diameter 2, and χρ-critical block graphs with diameter 3. Furthermore, we characterize χρ-critical graphs with small packing chromatic number, and we also consider χρ-critical trees. In addition, we prove that for any graph G and every edge e ∈ E(G), we have (χρ(G)+1)/2 ≤ χρ(G−e) ≤ χρ(G), and provide a corresponding realization result, which shows that χρ(G − e) can achieve any of the integers between these bounds.
