Abstract:In a subtropical area, a downflow-upflow biological aerated filter (D-UBAF) was used in the pretreatment of raw water containing seasonal high levels of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and organic pollutants. Operating parameters for low-flow periods were as follows: filtration rate of 8 m/h and gas-water ratio of 0.5:1.5. In terms of water quality, the average concentrations of NH3-N and permanganate index (CODMn) and the turbidity of the raw water were 5.02-9.45 mg/L, 5.79-10.1 mg/ L, and 19.7-63.1 NTU, respectively. The corresponding indexes of the D-UBAF effluent were 0.30-0.96 mg/L, 3.24-5.85 mg/L, and 3.83-19.9 NTU, respectively. The removal efficiencies were 90.3%, 42.7%, and 66.3%, respectively. Operating parameters for high-flow periods were as follows: filtration rate of 12 m/h and gas-water ratio of 0.3:0.5. In terms of water quality, the average concentrations of NH3-N and CODMn and the turbidity of the raw water were 2.19-3.41 mg/L, 5.30-7.56 mg/L, and 27.3-40.1 NTU, respectively. The corresponding indexes of the D-UBAF effluent were 0.18-0.41 mg/L, 2.87-4.50 mg/L and 5.43-16.8 NTU, respectively. The removal efficiencies were 89.3%, 40.2%, and 65.0%, respectively. The D-UBAF with one DBAF and two UBAFs constituted a "(sic)"-shaped structure. The space among these three components was used as a common tube gallery. The UBAF is the principal component of the biological pretreatment process. The DBAF runs before the UBAF; it can ensure that the head loss in the UBAF does not exceed 0.2 mH(2)O after filtration for 24 h. This also satisfies the head loss control requirement for numerous UBAFs, which share a centralized aeration system to achieve uniform aeration. DOI: 10.1061/(ASCE)EE.1943-7870.0000447. Abstract:To treat the fertilizer industrial wastewater,two sets of 60 L/h biological aerated filter are running simultaneously in the pilot-plant.The data show that the up-flow BAF has better COD and ammonia-nitrogen removals than down-flow BAF.When the COD loading of influent comes to 3.49 kg/(m3·d),the COD of up-flow effluent is 45 mg/L,and its removal rate is 89.5%;when the ammonia-nitrogen loading is 0.4 kg/(m3·d),the ammonia-nitrogen of up-flow effluent is 8 mg/L.Thus,the effluent meets the requirements of recycled cooling water standard.However,the effluent COD and ammonia-nitrogen of the down-flow BAF are 123 mg/L and 15 mg/L respectively.

Abstract:An up-flow ceramsite media biological aerated filter(BAF) was used for dyeing wastewater advanced treatment. Twice start-up method was employed and then the BAF reactorhad been operated steadily for160 days, while the removal efficency of COD and NH3-N was investigated on the condition of low B/C value and lacking of nutrients. Results showed that the reactorachieved mean degradation efficiency of 51.3%～56.5%forCOD and 86.5%～93.7%forNH3-N when the air/waterratio was 5:1 and hydraulic loading was 0.5 m3·m-2·h-1. The total nitrogen(TN) in this study showed slight degradation and the NO3--N was the major degradation production.The concentration of COD and NH3-N in the effluent was 39.6～45.3 mg·L-1 and 0.11～0.24 mg·L-1, respectively. The GC-MS showed that the pollutants in wastewater included butylated hydroxytoluene, cedrol, phthalic acid, and alkanes with a straight chain form nine to twenty seven. All the pollutants were bilological degraded in BAF, but the major pollutants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and cedrol still had 65.0%and 39.2%retention.

Abstract:Biological Aerated Filter(BAF) is a new technology developed from the base of the common biological filter.Two stage BAF-UV sterilization was studied for the domestic wastewater reuse to industrial cooling water.The results showed that,the effluent concentration of COD≤60mg/l,ammonia nitrogen≤5mg/l and coliforms≤2000MPN/l.A small Wastewater Treatment Plant of 3×104m3/d was designed with the technology of two stage BAF,the investment and operation cost were also analyzed.

Abstract:Upflow biological aerated filter (UBAF) was designed for advanced treatment of urban domestic wastewater in Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province. The process and design parameters of this project are presented and believed that for secondary effluent with lower bio-degradation performance, UBAF might be useful to get better final treatment. This process is low space required, low investment and easy to operate.It’s worth promoting for wastewater reclamation.

Abstract:The biological aerated filter (BAF) reactor was used as advanced treatment process to treat mixing dyeing wastewater. The BAF start-up period and the advanced treatment efficiency under different gas-water ratios were also discussed. Results showed that BAF was quick start-up within 15 days through synchronous continuous methods. The removal rates of NH3-N, COD and chromaticity reached to 77.8%, 61.5% and 90%, respectively at gas-water ratio of 3:1. Under the same biomass and environmental conditions, biofilms from BAF showed higher advanced treatment performance.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Biological aerated filter (BAF) is an efficient and economical treatment process to cope with the rapid increasing drainage of aquaculture wastewater. Here, GAC and ceramic, which have the combination advantage, was used as filters of BAF system to treat the aquaculture wastewater. The effect of filters in different sequences was also compared. The BAF with GAC at the bottom is named as GAC-down BAF, and the BAF at the top is named as GAC-upper BAF. RESULTS Results showed that the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) in GAC-down BAF was 54.2 +/- 1.2% higher than that in GAC-upper BAF, when the HRT was 3 h and the gas-water ratio was 5:1. Additionally, it had better phosphorus and COD removal performance in the GAC-down BAF than those in the GAC-upper BAF. Microbial community analysis of biofilm attached to different filter layers indicated that the abundances of functional microorganisms like Zoogloea spp., Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp., Nitrospira spp. on GAC of the GAC-down BAF were higher than those attached to ceramsite at the same site of GAC-up BAF. CONCLUSION It was demonstrated that GAC could provide a suitable niche for the growth of functional microbes at the up-flow BAF system, and plays a key role in pollutant removals from aquaculture wastewater. Abstract:Down flowing BAF is optimized. The disadvantages such as asymmetric aerating,big head losing and short rewash period are overcomed. The modified BAF was used to treat two different polluted water. The results show that the out-flow water index of NH4+-N is 0.17 mg·L-1 and 0.60 mg·L-1. Compared with 1.03 mg·L-1 and 2.50 mg·L-1 of the raw water,the average of the removal rate of NH4+-N is 84.25% and 75.87%,and there is not cumulation of NO2--N. The out-flow water index of is 2.41 mg·L-1 and 2.44 mg·L-1,Compared with 3.23 mg·L-1 and 5.33 mg·L-1 of the raw water,the average of the removal rate of CODMn is 24.05% and 46.56%.

Abstract:The biological aerated filter(BAF) has been utilized for treating the chemical condensate wastewater with high urea concentration in a petrochemical plant.The effects of the factors such as urea volume load,ammonia-nitrogen concentration volume load,pH and height of BAF on urea removal efficiency are investigated.The results show that it is feasible to treat highly concentrated urea wastewater by using BAF.When the average urea volume load,ammonium load are 6.92,0-3 kg/(m3·d) and pH 7.0-11.0,respectively,urea removal efficiencies of the two-stage BAF are all above 85%.

Abstract:Haydite and grain-slag, a new-style filter media made of grain-slag, were used as filter media for biological aerated filter (BAF) to treat synthetic wastewater in parallel. The aim of this work was to compare the ammonium nitrogen removal performance of two BAF reactors at the different influent pH values and ammonia nitrogen load rates. It could be demonstrated that the BAF packed with grain-slag presented higher ammonia removal efficiency than that with haydite. The grain-slag BAF and haydite BAF had ammonia nitrogen removals in the range of 90.63%–63.46% ,75.62%–42.23%, respectively, under the ammonia nitrogen concentration varying from 16mg/L to 64mg/L. Higher ammonia nitrogen removal in the BAF with grain-slag was attributable to its buffering pH effect capacity by stripping calcium carbonate (CaCO3). In addition, the detection of the amount of hetero bacteria and nitrobacteria of two biological aerated filters in five stages also showed that grain-slag medium was more suitable to the attached growth of nitrobacteria, which is helpful to the improvement of nitrification performance in grain-slag BAF.

Abstract:Biological aerated filter(BAF) was used for pre-treatment of the Zhujing River water.The result showed that under the condition of air/water ratio of 2∶1,filter velocity of 7.5m/h,water temperature of over 15℃,and influent ammonia nitrogen of 4.6mg/L or less,the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 70%~95%,and there was no nitrite accumulated in the reactor.Under the condition of influent CODMn was 4.3～15.6mg/L,the removal rate of CODMn was 25%～60%.

Abstract:In this study, polyethylene and zeolite, as media in two-stage biological aerated filters (BAF), were evaluated for simultaneous removal of ammonia nitrogen and organics in micro-polluted water under low temperature conditions. For specific source water, the contaminants removal characteristics are evaluated by single-factor experiment to determine the suitable pH, air-water ratio (AWR) and hydraulic load ratio (HLR). Ammonia nitrogen and permanganate index in BAFs were promoted effectively with pH = 7~8, AWR = 1.0:1.0~2.0:1.0, HLR = 1~4 m3/(m2·h), low pollution loads and a temperature of 10°C. Based on the response surface analysis, the optimum parameters were as follows: pH of 7.94, AWR of 1.41:1.0 and HLR of 1.39 m3/(m2·h), for simultaneous removal of ammonia nitrogen and permanganate index, their removal rates were respectively 59.76% and 18.16%. BAF has a great advantage in emergency treatment of low temperature micro-polluted water, and response surface analysis can be used to optimize operating parameters.

Abstract:Biological aerated filter (BAF) with porcelain beads as carrier was used for pretreatment of the high ammonia nitrogen content source water. The result shows that under the air/water ratio of 1∶1, filter velocity of 5.5 m/h, water temperature higher than 10 ℃, and influent ammonia nitrogen less than 5 mg/L, the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen is 70%-90%, with some nitrite accumulated in the reactor. Backwash cycle has more effect on ammonia nitrogen removal rate.

Abstract:A pilot-scale study on the treatment of dyeing and printing wastewater was carried out using biological aerated filter process. Operation of a nearly 6 month pilot-scale BAF, with a capacity of 5m3/h, presented a satisfactory result of treated effluent in terms of COD and color, in compliance with the wastewater emission standard of Guangdong Province ( DB44/26-2001). Other advantages of BAF process include less space area, lower construction cost and relatively steady operation.

Abstract:A pilot research on removals of ammonia-nitrogen and organics from micro pollution water source by UBAF was carried out.It was showed that UBAF had high removal rate for ammonia-nitrogen,nitrite and Mn;specially it had stronger nitrification ability;under the conditions of influent ammonia-nitrogen being 2mg/L,UBAF could operate under the hydraulic load of flow rate 16m/h and the removal rate was greater than 84%.The removal rate of permanganate index by UBAF averaged 10%;the removal rate of AOC was 58%;after pretreatment by UBAF,the dosage of coagulant could save by about 30%;the removal rate of chloroform in water by UBAF was lower.

Abstract:Integrated unit of ozone and biological aerated filter (BAF)was used to treat organic polluted wastewater containing ammonia nitrogen. The results indicate that removal rate of ammonia nitrogen decreases with the increase of ammonia nitrogen concentration in influent,the ideal ammonia nitrogen loading is 0. 17 ~ 0. 25 kg / m3 ·d,and then removal rate of ammonia nitrogen can be above 60% stably. Ammonia nitrogen in influent has some negative influence on COD removal. When concentration of ammonia nitrogen is more than 60 mg / L,effect of COD removal turns worse obviously. Lipid-phosphorous method was applied in biomass measurement of the integrated ozone-BAF unit to treat biomass distribution in the system. It is shown that in the area near inlet,when sampling height isn’t more than 1. 2 m,biomass is extremely rare as a result of the high ozone disinfection. Biomass reaches maximum when the vertical distance is 1. 5 m,and then biomass declines with the increase of sampling height.

Abstract:A bench scale experimental biological aerated filter(BAF)was erected,with which urea-containing wastewater was treated.The study focuses on the factors affecting BAF start-up such as aeration method,carrier media's characteristics and operation mode.Result shows that pre-aeration facilitates start-up and activated carbon is better than ceramic beads as carrier media with shorter start-up time and stable removal of urea(around 75%).In addition,higher filter velocity can accelerate BAF start-up.
The effect of air-upflow velocity on the performance of biological aerated filter

Abstract:Air-upflow velocity is a critical factor in the design and operation of the Biological Aerated Filter (BAFs)., in order to achieve optimal performance. The performance of a pilot-scale upflow biofilters filled with ceramsite in the municipal wastewater treatment was investigated over a wide range of air-upflow rates from 5.4 to 27 m/hr. Results from long-term operation of the BAF system indicate that the air-upflow velocity can affect the removal of pollutants, as well as the backwashing period. The growth of the air-upflow velocity improved the efficiency of the COD and NH4 +-N removal. But its growth is not always good for the TN removal when the air-upflow velocity was above 16.2 m/hr. SS removal rate deteriorated with the rising of the air-upflow velocity, due to the air-scouring. The backwashing period enlarged from 24 to 48 hours as the air-upflow velocity increased from 5.4 to 27 m/hr. It was suggested the effective BAF controlled air-upflow velocity for pollutant removel and applicable backwashing period is approximate 16.2 m/hr. © 2011 IEEE.
