Studies of pump light leakage out of couplers for multi-coupler side-pumped Yb-doped double-clad fiber lasers

Abstract:The angle-polished method is efficiently used for the pump coupling of double-clad fiber (DCF) lasers. But it was found that the coupler in this method not only launched pump light into the DCF but also made the pump light leak out of the DCF, which led to efficiency loss of the lasers, especially when multiple couplers were applied. We studied the leakage effect theoretically and experimentally. Furthermore, we developed a multi-coupler side-pumped Yb-doped DCF laser and acquired 1.38 W output power with slope efficiency of 48.9%.
