Abstract:Objective To study the morphological difference between the titanium surfaces treated by micro-arc oxidation(MAO) technique after sand blasting and micro-arc oxidation technique after sand blasting in combination with acid etching, and to explore how to use the "trabecular bone-like" structure and the rich calcium and phosphor composition of the MAO coating further. Methods Pure titanium specimens were sand-blasted by Al2O3 particles of 106 μm and 250 μm in diameter respectively.Half of them were further doubly etched with hydrofluoric acid. The two kinds of specimens were further divided into subgroups and treated by MAO technique using various voltages.Scanning electomicroscope(SEM) and X-ray diffraction were performed to characterize the coating surfaces. Results MAO processing after sand blasting and acid etching produced continuous and even oxide film.MAO processing did not change the basic morphology of sand blasting and acid etching. The pore size of the MAO processing surface of the second group treated by the Al2O3 particles of 250 μm diameter is the most close to the size of osteoblast. Conclusion Sand blasting and acid etching followed with micro-arc oxidation can optimize the surface morphology of the titanium implants.
