Abstract:The split ratio between the rotor and stator outer diameters is an important design parameter. Considerable research has been carried out for the analytical determination of the optimal split ratio in both internal rotor and tubular permanent magnet brushless machines over last decade. In this paper, the optimal split ratio for both non-overlapping and overlapping winding external rotor permanent magnet brushless machines have been derived analytically, with due account for the influence of both fixed and variable rotor back-iron thickness, curvature effect, pole number, slot number, winding factor, tooth-tip, and end-winding length. Moreover, the variation of optimal split ratio with slot and pole combinations, tooth-tips, and maximum flux density in the stator/rotor lamination is also investigated. The theoretical analyses are verified by finite element analyses.
Influence of Stator Asymmetry on Cogging Torque of Permanent Magnet Brushless Machines

Abstract:The paper investigates the influence of stator asymmetry on the cogging torque of permanent magnet brushless motors. It shows that high localized magnetic saturation due to such asymmetry can significantly increase the magnitude of the cogging torque and introduces cogging components which have an order lower than the least common multiple between the stator slot number and the rotor pole number. The findings are confirmed by both finite element analyses and measurements on an 18-slot, 6-pole prototype motor.

Abstract:An analytical method for predicting the airgap magnetic field distribution, armature winding flux density distribution and back EMF is presented, which consider the effect of slots by complex relative airgap permeance; an analytical model of PMSM’s cogging torque is also predicted using Maxwell stress method calculated along slots’ edge, and all the analytical models above consider the effects of partition-between-poles(PBP), The validity and the correctness of the analytical model are verified through FEA and experiments. On the basis of the analysis of analytical model, an PBP Halbach magnet, which providers better performance of the magnetic field distribution than the traditional Halbach magnet is presented, and then the superiority of the optimized PBP Halbach magnet is also verified further through FEA and experiments.

Abstract:The split ratio has been optimized for the maximum torque density when the air-gap flux density is fixed in existing papers. However, the air-gap flux density can vary with the split ratio significantly in interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machines due to flux focusing. Therefore, an optimal air-gap flux density may exist, together with the optimal split ratio, for the maximum torque in IPM machines. This paper analytically optimizes the air-gap flux density and split ratio individually, as well as the global optimum in terms of the torque density in the fractional-slot IPM machines with non-overlapping windings. In addition, the influence of pole-slot combination and tooth-tips on the optimal split ratio and air-gap flux density is discussed. The analytical result is verified by the finite element analysis. It shows that the optimal split ratio reduces with the increase of the air-gap flux density, and the preferred air-gap flux density is around 0.5-0.7 times of maximum flux density in the stator teeth when the rare earth permanent magnets are employed.

Abstract:The novel doubly salient slot permanent magnet linear machines (DSSPMLMs) are proposed in this paper. First, the topology and geometric parameters of the DSSPMLMs with 12 slots are introduced, and the corresponding basic operating principle is investigated. Then, feasible slot/pole combinations and winding configurations are further analyzed. To the DSSPMLMs with 12 slots, all structures with 10/11/13/14 poles and double layer (DL)/single layer (SL) winding are optimized. Finally, the electromagnetic performance including open-circuit and static force-current characteristics are comparatively studied using 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA). The results show that the optimal slot/pole combination is 12-slots/13-poles (12s/13p) and the DL winding exhibits lower force ripple while relatively lower thrust force capability than SL winding at low electrical loadings.
Influence of slot and pole number combination on radial force and vibration modes in fractional slot PM brushless machines having single- and double-layer windings

Abstract:This paper systematically investigates the radial force and vibration modes in fractional slot surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) brushless machines having different slot and pole numbers, viz. 2p = N-s +/- 2, 2p = N-s +/- 1, q=0.5, respectively, with either single- or double-layer winding. The dominant vibration mode can be determined from the lowest order of radial force harmonic. It shows that for integer slot PM machines, q=1, the dominant radial force is mainly caused by the fundamental magnet field itself, and the dominant vibration mode order is equal to pole number which is usually high. However, in all fractional slot PM machines, the dominant radial force is mainly produced by the interaction between the harmonic in magnet field and the harmonic in armature reaction field, while the noise and vibration can be significantly higher since the dominant vibration mode order can be as low as 1 or 2, which strongly depends on the slot and pole number combinations, as well as the winding topologies, as confirmed by both developed analytical model and finite element (FE) analyses.

Abstract:The design rules of winding configurations and stator-pole/rotor-tooth (SP/RT) number combinations of doubly-fed flux-switching permanent magnet (DF-FSPM) machines are investigated in this paper based on coil electromotive force (EMF) vectors. The relationships between the components of stator and rotor coil-EMF vector diagrams are unveiled at first, including the numbers of stator and rotor phases, and the numbers of stator and rotor spokes. Then, the SP/RT number combinations are derived considering feasible stator/rotor phase number combinations and different winding configurations. The SP/RT number combinations are optimized considering the winding factors, magnetic field harmonics, unbalanced magnetic forces and machine diameter. It is shown that both of the stator and rotor pitch factors increase when the SP and RT numbers get closer. Furthermore, the influence of winding configurations and SP/RT number combinations on electromagnetic performances of DF-FSPM machines are analyzed by finite-element method. Finally, the analysis results are validated by experiment.
Influence of End-Winding on Optimal Design Parameters for Maximum Torque of DC Excited Flux-Switching Machines

Abstract:In this paper, 12/10 stator/rotor pole DC excited flux-switching (DE-FS) machines are optimized with and without consideration of end-winding. The influence of end-winding on optimal design parameters, such as DC winding to armature winding copper loss ratio, split ratio, stator tooth arc to stator pole pitch ratio, stator back-iron thickness to stator tooth arc ratio, DC winding to armature winding slot area ratio, and rotor tooth arc to rotor tooth pitch ratio, etc., for maximum torque of DE-FS machines is investigated. Both analytical and FE results show the optimal DC winding to armature winding copper loss ratio is independent of end-winding while DC winding to armature winding slot area ratio is related to construction of DC winding and armature winding. In addition, optimal split ratio is smaller in the DE-FS machine with longer length of end-winding. The end-winding has no significant influence on other optimal design parameters.
Influence of Stator and Rotor Pole Number Combinations and Winding Configurations on Flux-Weakening Performance of Switched-Flux PM Machines

Abstract:Based on the dq-axis model, the flux-weakening characteristics of switched-flux permanent magnet machines (SFPMMs) with 12/10, 12/11, 12/13, 12/14 stator/rotor pole number combinations and different winding configurations are analyzed by the flux-linkage method accounting for crosscoupling effect. It is shown that the stator and rotor pole number combinations have significant influence on flux-weakening characteristics of SFPMMs. When SFPMMs have the same structures of stator and rotor, the alternate poles wound one exhibits better flux-weakening capability than all poles wound one. The analyses using the dq-axis model are validated by 2D finite element analysis (FEA).

Abstract:In recent years, with the development of power electronics technology and permanent magnet materials, permanent magnet brushless DC motor has developed rapidly and is widely used in electric vehicles, flywheel energy storage, rail transit and other fields. Its design level will directly affect these fields. In the process of motor design, it is very important to choose the appropriate combination of stator slot and rotor pole number. Different groove pole combination of permanent magnet brushless DC motor will directly affect the performance of the motor. Therefore, the influence of different ratio of stator slot and rotor pole on motor performance is analyzed by finite element method. By setting excitation source and boundary condition, the influence of different groove pole combination on magnetic density distribution, magnetic resistance moment, no-load back potential and no-load winding flux linkage of permanent magnet brushless DC motor is analyzed. The results showed, the lowest magnetic induction intensity is distributed in the rotating shaft, permanent magnet, stator winding and yoke of the motor. The flux waveform is sine wave, and the motor with 8 poles and 24 slots has the largest flux curve frequency and the smallest flux curve frequency, while the motor with 4 poles and 24 slots has the smallest flux curve frequency and the largest flux.

Abstract:The PM linear motors (PMLMs) with fractional slots per pole can adopt non-overlapping windings, so they have many advantages such as short end windings, low copper losses, high thrust force density and so on. They are widely applied in high speed digital machine tools and processing equipments of semiconductor. For two PMLMs of 12 slots/11 poles and 12 slots/10 poles, four feasible structures of each one are described with types of single-sided or double-sided and windings of all teeth wound or of alternate teeth wound. Based on the erected finite element method (FEM) model, the relationships between the average thrust force, thrust ripple and structure parameters are investigated. Moreover, the thrust force performance of the double-sided structure is deeply studied when permanent magnets in two sides are shifted by a certain position, and then the optimal shifted position is found. By comparative analysis in detail, the optimal designs of single-sided and double-sided PMLMs with fractional slots per pole are obtained based on the lowest thrust ripple/thrust force. The research results are benefit to optimal design and application of these kind PMLMs. © 2012 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

Abstract:A novel linear doubly salient slot permanent magnet motor (LDSSPMM) is proposed in this paper. First, the topology and geometric parameters of the LDSSPMM with 12 slots (12s) are proposed and the basic operating principle is investigated. By analyzing the feasible slot/pole combinations and harmonic winding factors, 11 poles and 13 poles (11p/13p) are proved to have higher winding factor for working harmonic. In addition, the LDSSPMMs with 12s/11p and 12s/13p are optimized by global optimization with genetic algorithm. It is shown that 12s/13p is the optimal slot/pole combination. Finally, the electromagnetic performance of the 12s/13p LDSSPMM is investigated by 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) and validated by 3-D FEA.

Abstract:The paper evaluated the main performances of the low-speed, high-torque and direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous motor provided with fractional, slot concentrated windings. The finite element method is used to study the influence of the slots/pole combinations on the air gap flux density, the cogging torque and efficiency. The design principles of choosing slots/pole combination and motor structure for low-speed high-torque permanent magnet motor were given. A optimal slots/pole combination and motor design results of a low speed, high torque and direct drive permanent magnet synchronous motor(400W/45rpm/90N·m) were also raised.

Abstract:In this paper, the method with different pole arc combination was adopted to reduce the cogging torque in PMDC motors. To minimize the cogging torque, a global optimization algorithm (zooming algorithm) and the finite element method (FEM) are combined to find the best pole arc combination. The Fourier coefficient of the square of magnetic flux density is analyzed to determine the feasible region from which the lowest cogging torque was obtained. Then the zooming algorithm and FEM are used to find the best combination. It can be concluded that the cogging torque is notably reduced

Abstract:High-speed permanent magnet motor is widely used for its excellent performance. With the development of technology, the motor needs be designed to meet more features, such as low torque ripples, low noise, low loss, and so on. This paper focuses on the design of a 500W, 120000rpm high-speed permanent magnet motor, and the torque ripples effected by two pole-slot combinations are analyzed by both the theoretical solution and the finite element analysis with Fourier transformation. It is clarified that because of the different pole pairs and different magnetizations, the electromagnetic torque of 4p6s is smaller than that of 2p3s, while the ripple torque of 4p6s is larger than that of 2p3s. In addition, as the width of the slot opening increasing, the torque ripples of 4p6s are always greater than that of 2p3s.

Abstract:Cogging torque reduction is one of the most important requirements in the design of BLDC motors due to its direct impact on the performance of the motor. In this paper, the influences of tooth width and slot/pole match on cogging torque corresponding to both uniformed teeth and nonuniformed teeth were theoretically analyzed on the basis of analytical expressions of cogging torque deduced with energy method. Furthermore, several models which denote features of different slots and poles were setup and calculated in finite element analysis software Flux2D, the result of which verified the theoretical analysis. Valuable conclusions and some suggestions were given in the paper which is meaningful to the design of good performance BLDC motors.

Abstract:A novel double-sided yokeless multitooth linear switched-flux permanent magnet (DYMLSFPM) motor is proposed to improve the electromagnetic performance of conventional double-sided linear switched-flux PM (DLSFPM) motor in terms of force ripple and cogging force. Its feature of structure is the multitooth primary without yoke. First, an analytical method of permeance model is developed for determining the optimal combination of primary slots and secondary poles. For DYMLSFPM motor with six primary slots, there are four available different secondary poles 16/17/19/20, respectively. By comparing the results of four combinations, it shows that the DYMLSFPM motor with 19 secondary poles can have better thrust force performance, which is also verified by the finite-element analysis. After all these four structures are optimized first by single-variable optimization and then by global optimization with genetic algorithm for further analysis, 6-slots/19-poles (6s/19p) combination can have the second highest average thrust force and the lowest thrust ripple. Moreover, it requires significantly smaller volume of PMs and exhibits much lower cogging force than conventional 6s/7p DLSFPM motor. Finally, a prototype of 6s/19p DYMLSFPM motor is manufactured and tested to validate the predicted results.

Abstract:Wound rotor Brushless Doubly-fed Machine(BDFM) is a new type of motor. The internal magnetic field of BDFM is complicated. The magnetic field characteristics of BDFM are deduced by analytical method.In order to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic pull on both sides of the rotor, the influences of the pole number combination of stator on the motor magnetic field and the electromagnetic force are studied. Taking two wound rotor BDFMs with different pole number combinations as examples, the field-circuit coupling models of the motor are established, the magnetic field characteristics of the BDFM are verified, and the effects of pole number combination on the air-gap magnetic field, rotor surface electromagnetic force and electromagnetic torque are analyzed. Finally, the effects of pole number combination on the local electromagnetic force of the BDFM rotor are studied. This paper provides data support for the design and performance improvement of wound rotor BDFM.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of fixed pole-slot combinations of traditional permanent magnet linear motors (PMLMs), this paper proposes a novel PMLM with the same number of poles and slots, which is combined with several unit motors with different numbers of poles and slots. Firstly, the design principle of this type of motor is analyzed based on the slot electromotive force star diagram. The four possible topologies of the double-sided PMLM and their basic performance are analyzed. In addition, taking the single-sided PMLM with the same number of poles and slots as an example, the characteristics of the cogging force of different unit motors are analyzed through the superposition model of the cogging force of the single slot, and the principle of reducing the detent force is given based on this. Further, combining Taguchi's method and genetic algorithm (GA), the sensitivity of each parameter is analyzed and the detent force of the motor is optimized. Finally, the optimization results are verified through finite element analysis and experiments
