Abstract:An n-r.e. set cart be defined as the symmetric difference of n recursively enumerable sets. The classes of these sets form a natural hierarchy which became a well-studied topic in recursion theory. In a series of ground-breaking papers, Ershov generalized this hierarchy to transfinite levels based on Kleene's notations of ordinals and this work lead to a fruitful study of these sets and their many-one and Turing degrees. The Ershov hierarchy is a natural measure of complexity of the sets below the halting problem. In this paper, we survey the early work by Ershov and others on this hierarchy and present the most fundamental results. We also provide some pointers to concurrent work in the field.

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.

Abstract:The structure ${\cal C}_2:=(1^\infty,\le,\le_1,\le_2)$, introduced and first analyzed in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL), is shown to be elementary recursive. Here, $1^\infty$ denotes the proof-theoretic ordinal of the fragment $\Pi^1_1$-$\mathrm{CA}_0$ of second order number theory, or equivalently the set theory $\mathrm{KPl}_0$, which axiomatizes limits of models of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity. The partial orderings $\le_1$ and $\le_2$ denote the relations of $\Sigma_1$- and $\Sigma_2$-elementary substructure, respectively. In a subsequent article we will show that the structure ${\cal C}_2$ comprises the core of the structure ${\cal R}_2$ of pure elementary patterns of resemblance of order $2$. In Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) the stage has been set by showing that the least ordinal containing a cover of each pure pattern of order $2$ is $1^\infty$. However, it is not obvious from Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) that ${\cal C}_2$ is an elementary recursive structure. This is shown here through a considerable disentanglement in the description of connectivity components of $\le_1$ and $\le_2$. The key to and starting point of our analysis is the apparatus of ordinal arithmetic developed in Wilken 2007 (APAL) and in Section 5 of Carlson and Wilken 2012 (JSL), which was enhanced in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) specifically for the analysis of ${\cal C}_2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a categorical analysis of the arithmetic theory $I\Sigma_1$. We will provide a categorical proof of the classical result that the provably total recursive functions in $I\Sigma_1$ are exactly the primitive recursive functions. Our strategy is to first construct a coherent theory of arithmetic $\mathbb T$, and prove that $\mathbb T$ presents the initial coherent category equipped with a parametrised natural number object. This allows us to derive the provably total functions in $\mathbb T$ are exactly the primitive recursive ones, and establish some other constructive properties about $\mathbb T$. We also show that $\mathbb T$ is exactly the $\Pi_2$-fragment of $I\Sigma_1$, and conclude they have the same class of provably total recursive functions.

Abstract:We unveil new patterns of Structural Reflection in the large-cardinal hierarchy below the first measurable cardinal. Namely, we give two different characterizations of strongly unfoldable and subtle cardinals in terms of a weak form of the principle of Structural Reflection, and also in terms of weak product structural reflection. Our analysis prompts the introduction of the new notion of $C^{(n)}$-strongly unfoldable cardinal for every natural number $n$, and we show that these cardinals form a natural hierarchy between strong unfoldable and subtle cardinals analogous to the known hierarchies of $C^{(n)}$-extendible and $\Sigma_n$-strong cardinals. These results show that the relatively low region of the large-cardinal hierarchy comprised between the first strongly unfoldable and the first subtle cardinals is completely analogous to the much higher region between the first strong and the first Woodin cardinals, and also to the much further upper region of the hierarchy ranging between the first supercompact and the first Vopěnka cardinals.

A $Π^0_2$ Singleton of Minimal Arithmetic Degree

Abstract:In the study of the arithmetic degrees (the degree structure induced by relative arithmetic definability, ($\leq_{a}$) the $\omega$-REA sets play a role analogous to the role the r.e. degrees play in the study of the Turing degrees. However, much less is known about the arithmetic degrees and the role of the $\omega$-REA sets in that structure than about the Turing degrees. Indeed, even basic questions such as the existence of a $\omega$-REA set of minimal arithmetic degree are open. This paper makes progress on this question by demonstrating that some promising approaches inspired by the analogy with the r.e sets fail to show that no $\omega$-REA set is arithmetically minimal. Finally, it constructs a $\Pi^0_2$ singleton of minimal arithmetic degree. Not only is this a result of considerable interest in it's own right, constructions of $\Pi^0_2$ singletons often pave the way for constructions of $\omega$-REA sets with similar properties. Along the way, a number of interesting results relating arithmetic reducibility and rates of growth are established.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the complexity of isomorphisms between scattered linear orders of constructive ranks. We give the general upper bound and prove that this bound is sharp. Also, we construct examples showing that the categoricity level of a given scattered linear order can be an arbitrary ordinal from 3 to the upper bound, except for the case when the ordinal is the successor of a limit ordinal. The existence question of the scattered linear orders whose categoricity level equals the successor of a limit ordinal is still open.

Abstract:In this article, we generalize Eberlein's Rigidity Theorem to the singular case, namely, one of the spaces is only assumed to be a CAT(0) topological manifold. As a corollary, we get that any compact irreducible but locally reducible locally symmetric space of noncompact type does not admit a nonpositively curved (in the Aleksandrov sense) piecewise Euclidean structure. Any hyperbolic manifold, on the other hand, does admit such a structure.
Generically Computable Linear Orderings

Abstract:We study notions of generic and coarse computability in the context of computable structure theory. Our notions are stratified by the $\Sigma_\beta$ hierarchy. We focus on linear orderings. We show that at the $\Sigma_1$ level all linear orderings have both generically and coarsely computable copies. This behavior changes abruptly at higher levels; we show that at the $\Sigma_{\alpha+2}$ level for any $\alpha\in\omega_1^{ck}$ the set of linear orderings with generically or coarsely computable copies is $\mathbf{\Sigma}_1^1$-complete and therefore maximally complicated. This development is new even in the general analysis of generic and coarse computability of countable structures. In the process of proving these results we introduce new tools for understanding generically and coarsely computable structures. We are able to give a purely structural statement that is equivalent to having a generically computable copy and show that every relational structure with only finitely many relations has coarsely and generically computable copies at the lowest level of the hierarchy.

Abstract:Abstract The complexity classification of computably enumerable equivalence relations (or ceers, for short) has received much attention in the recent literature. A measure of complexity is typically provided by an appropriate notion of a reduction. Given binary relations $R$ and $S$ on natural numbers, a total function $f$ is a reduction from $R$ to $S$ if for arbitrary $x$ and $y$, the conditions $x~R~y$ and $f(x)~S~f(y)$ are always equivalent. If the function $f$ can be chosen primitive recursive, then we say that $R$ is primitively recursively reducible to $S$, denoted by $R \leq _{pr} S$. We investigate the degree structure $(\textbf {Ceers},\leq _{pr})$ of $\leq _{pr}$-degrees of ceers. We examine when pairs of incomparable degrees have an infimum and a supremum. In particular, we show that $(\textbf {Ceers},\leq _{pr})$ is neither an upper semilattice nor a lower semilattice. We also study first-order definable subclasses of $(\textbf {Ceers},\leq _{pr})$. In particular, we prove that the set of equivalences that have only finitely many classes is definable in $(\textbf {Ceers},\leq _{pr})$. Finally, we show that the structure of $\leq _{pr}$-degrees of computably enumerable preorders has a hereditarily undecidable theory.
