Abstract:An n-r.e. set cart be defined as the symmetric difference of n recursively enumerable sets. The classes of these sets form a natural hierarchy which became a well-studied topic in recursion theory. In a series of ground-breaking papers, Ershov generalized this hierarchy to transfinite levels based on Kleene's notations of ordinals and this work lead to a fruitful study of these sets and their many-one and Turing degrees. The Ershov hierarchy is a natural measure of complexity of the sets below the halting problem. In this paper, we survey the early work by Ershov and others on this hierarchy and present the most fundamental results. We also provide some pointers to concurrent work in the field.

Abstract:We study a natural hierarchy in first-order logic, namely the quantifier structure hierarchy, which gives a systematic classification of first-order formulas based on structural quantifier resource. We define a variant of Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse games that characterizes quantifier classes and use it to prove that this hierarchy is strict over finite structures, using strategy compositions. Moreover, we prove that this hierarchy is strict even over ordered finite structures, which is interesting in the context of descriptive complexity.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the dependence of recursively enumerable structures on the equality relation which is fixed to a specific r.e. equivalence relation. We compare r.e. equivalence relations on the natural numbers with respect to the amount of structures they permit to represent from a given class of structures such as algebras, permutations and linear orders. In particular, we show that for various types of structures represented, there are minimal and maximal elements.

Abstract:Lachlan observed that any nonzero d.c.e. degree bounds a nonzero c.e. degree. In this paper, we study the c.e. predecessors of d.c.e. degrees, and prove that given a nonzero d.c.e. degree a, there is a c.e. degree b below a and a high d.c.e. degree d > b such that b bounds all the c.e. degrees below d. This result gives a unified approach to some seemingly unrelated results. In particular, it has the following two known theorems as corollaries: (1) there is a low c.e. degree isolating a high d.c.e. degree [S. Ishmukhametov, G. Wu, Isolation and the high/low hierarchy, Arch. Math. Logic 41 (2002) 259-266]; (2) there is a high d.c.e. degree bounding no minimal pairs [C.T Chong, A. Abstract:The structure ${\cal C}_2:=(1^\infty,\le,\le_1,\le_2)$, introduced and first analyzed in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL), is shown to be elementary recursive. Here, $1^\infty$ denotes the proof-theoretic ordinal of the fragment $\Pi^1_1$-$\mathrm{CA}_0$ of second order number theory, or equivalently the set theory $\mathrm{KPl}_0$, which axiomatizes limits of models of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity. The partial orderings $\le_1$ and $\le_2$ denote the relations of $\Sigma_1$- and $\Sigma_2$-elementary substructure, respectively. In a subsequent article we will show that the structure ${\cal C}_2$ comprises the core of the structure ${\cal R}_2$ of pure elementary patterns of resemblance of order $2$. In Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) the stage has been set by showing that the least ordinal containing a cover of each pure pattern of order $2$ is $1^\infty$. However, it is not obvious from Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) that ${\cal C}_2$ is an elementary recursive structure. This is shown here through a considerable disentanglement in the description of connectivity components of $\le_1$ and $\le_2$. The key to and starting point of our analysis is the apparatus of ordinal arithmetic developed in Wilken 2007 (APAL) and in Section 5 of Carlson and Wilken 2012 (JSL), which was enhanced in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL) specifically for the analysis of ${\cal C}_2$.

Abstract:In this paper, the notions of Fα-categorical and Gα-categorical structures are introduced by choosing the isomorphism such that the function itself or its graph sits on the α-th level of the Ershov hierarchy, respectively. Separations obtained by natural graphs which are the disjoint unions of countably many finite graphs. Furthermore, for size-bounded graphs, an easy criterion is given to say when it is computable-categorical and when it is only G2-categorical; in the latter case it is not Fα-categorical for any recursive ordinal α.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a categorical analysis of the arithmetic theory $I\Sigma_1$. We will provide a categorical proof of the classical result that the provably total recursive functions in $I\Sigma_1$ are exactly the primitive recursive functions. Our strategy is to first construct a coherent theory of arithmetic $\mathbb T$, and prove that $\mathbb T$ presents the initial coherent category equipped with a parametrised natural number object. This allows us to derive the provably total functions in $\mathbb T$ are exactly the primitive recursive ones, and establish some other constructive properties about $\mathbb T$. We also show that $\mathbb T$ is exactly the $\Pi_2$-fragment of $I\Sigma_1$, and conclude they have the same class of provably total recursive functions.

Abstract:We introduce a finite automata model for performing computations over an arbitrary structure $\mathcal S$ . The automaton processes sequences of elements in $\mathcal S$ . While processing the sequence, the automaton tests atomic relations, performs atomic operations of the structure $\mathcal S$ , and makes state transitions. In this setting, we study several problems such as closure properties, validation problem and emptiness problems. We investigate the dependence of deciding these problems on the underlying structures and the number of registers of our model of automata. Our investigation demonstrates that some of these properties are related to the existential first order fragments of the underlying structures.

Abstract:Computability theorists have introduced multiple hierarchies to measure the complexity of sets of natural numbers. The Kleene Hierarchy classifies sets according to the first-order complexity of their defining formulas. The Ershov Hierarchy classifies $\Delta^0_2$ sets with respect to the number of mistakes that are needed to approximate them. Biacino and Gerla extended the Kleene Hierarchy to the realm of fuzzy sets, whose membership functions range in a complete lattice $L$ (e.g., the real interval $[0; 1]_\mathbb{R}$). In this paper, we combine the Ershov Hierarchy and fuzzy set theory, by introducing and investigating the Fuzzy Ershov Hierarchy. In particular, we focus on the fuzzy $n$-c.e. sets which form the finite levels of this hierarchy. Intuitively, a fuzzy set is $n$-c.e. if its membership function can be approximated by changing monotonicity at most $n-1$ times. We prove that the Fuzzy Ershov Hierarchy does not collapse; that, in analogy with the classical case, each fuzzy $n$-c.e. set can be represented as a Boolean combination of fuzzy c.e. sets; but that, contrary to the classical case, the Fuzzy Ershov Hierarchy does not exhaust the class of all $\Delta^0_2$ fuzzy sets.

Abstract:We prove level-by-level upper and lower bounds on the strength of determinacy for finite differences of sets in the hyperarithmetical hierarchy in terms of subsystems of finite-and transfinite-order arithmetic, extending the Montalbán-Shore theorem to each of the levels of the Borel hierarchy beyond the one they treated. We also prove equivalences between reflection principles for higher-order arithmetic and quantified determinacy axioms, answering two questions of Pacheco and Yokoyama.
