Abstract:A computable presentation of the linearly ordered set (ω,≤), where ω is the set of natural numbers and ≤ is the natural order on ω, is any linearly ordered set L = (ω,≤L) isomorphic to (ω,≤) such that ≤L is a computable relation. Let X be subset of ω and XL be the image of X in the linear order L under the isomorphism between (ω,≤) and L. Abstract:We investigate the degree spectra of computable relations on canonically ordered natural numbers and integers . As for , we provide several criteria that fix the degree spectrum of a computable relation to all c.e. or to all degrees; this includes the complete characterization of the degree spectra of so-called computable block functions that have only finitely many types of blocks. Compared to Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022), we obtain a more general solution to the problem regarding possible degree spectra on , answering the question whether there are infinitely many such spectra. As for , we prove the following dichotomy result: given an arbitrary computable relation R on , its degree spectrum is either trivial or it contains all c.e. degrees. This result, and the proof techniques required to solve it, extend the analogous theorem for obtained by Wright (Computability 7:349–365, 2018), and provide initial insight to Wright's question whether such a dichotomy holds on computable ill-founded linear orders. This article is an extended version of Bazhenov et al. (in: LIPIcs, vol 219, pp 8:1–8:20, 2022).

Abstract:A computable structure A is x-computably categorical for some Turing degree x, if for every computable structure B isomorphic to A there is an isomorphism f:B -> A with f computable in x. A degree x is a degree of categoricity if there is a computable A such that A is x-computably categorical, and for all y, if A is y-computably categorical then y computes x. We construct a Sigma_2 set whose degree is not a degree of categoricity. We also demonstrate a large class of degrees that are not degrees of categoricity by showing that every degree of a set which is 2-generic relative to some perfect tree is not a degree of categoricity. Finally, we prove that every noncomputable hyperimmune-free degree is not a degree of categoricity.

Abstract:We examine the degree spectra of relations on ${(\omega, <)}$. Given an additional relation $R$ on ${(\omega,<)}$, such as the successor relation, the degree spectrum of $R$ is the set of Turing degrees of $R$ in computable copies of ${(\omega,<)}$. It is known that all degree spectra of relations on ${(\omega,<)}$ fall into one of four categories: the computable degree, all of the c.e. degrees, all of the $\Delta^0_2$ degrees, or intermediate between the c.e. degrees and the $\Delta^0_2$ degrees. Examples of the first three degree spectra are easy to construct and well-known, but until recently it was open whether there is a relation with intermediate degree spectrum on a cone. Bazhenov, Kalociński, and Wroclawski constructed an example of an intermediate degree spectrum, but their example is unnatural in the sense that it is constructed by diagonalization and thus not canonical, that is, which relation you obtain from their construction depends on which Gödel encoding (and hence order of enumeration) of the partial computable functions / programs you choose. In this paper, we use the ''on-a-cone'' paradigm to restrict our attention to "natural" relations $R$. Our main result is a construction of a natural relation on ${(\omega,<)}$ which has intermediate degree spectrum. This relation has intermediate degree spectrum because of structural reasons.

Abstract:In this paper, we study effective monotonic approximations of sets and sequences of sets. We show that there is a sequence of sets which has no uniform computable monotonic approximation but has an x-computable monotonic approximation for every hyperimmune degree x. We also construct a Sigma(0)(2) set which is not limitwise monotonic but is x-limitwise monotonic relative to every non-zero Delta(0)(2) degree x. We show that if a sequence of sets is uniformly limitwise monotonic in x for all except countably many degrees x, then it has to be uniformly limitwise monotonic. Finally, we apply these results to investigate degree spectra of abelian groups, equivalence relations, and. N-1-categorical structures.

Abstract:We study the bi-embeddability and elementary bi-embeddability relation on graphs under Borel reducibility and investigate the degree spectra realized by this relations. We first give a Borel reduction from embeddability on graphs to elementary embeddability on graphs. As a consequence we obtain that elementary bi-embeddability on graphs is a analytic complete equivalence relation. We then investigate the algorithmic properties of this reduction to show that every bi-embeddability spectrum of a graph is the jump spectrum of an elementary bi-embeddability spectrum of a graph.

We also show that there exist infinite collections of $sQ_{1}$-degrees $\{\boldsymbol {a_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ and $\{\boldsymbol {b_{i}}\}_{i\in \omega }$ such that for every $i, j,$ (1) $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {a_{i+1}}$, $\boldsymbol {b_{j+1}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ and $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}<_{sQ_{1}}\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$; (2) every c.e set in $\boldsymbol {a_{i}}$ is a maximal set; and (3) every c.e. set in $\boldsymbol {b_{j}}$ is a non-maximal hyperhypersimple set. We prove that a noncomputable c.e. $sQ$-degree contains either only one or infinitely many c.e. $sQ_{1}$-degrees. The $sQ_{1}$-degrees of c.e. cylinders are dense upper semilattice.

Abstract:We prove level-by-level upper and lower bounds on the strength of determinacy for finite differences of sets in the hyperarithmetical hierarchy in terms of subsystems of finite-and transfinite-order arithmetic, extending the Montalbán-Shore theorem to each of the levels of the Borel hierarchy beyond the one they treated. We also prove equivalences between reflection principles for higher-order arithmetic and quantified determinacy axioms, answering two questions of Pacheco and Yokoyama.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a Dedekind domain whose field of fractions $K$ is a global field. Let $A$ be a finite-dimensional separable $K$-algebra and let $\Lambda$ be an $\mathcal{O}$-order in $A$. Let $n$ be a positive integer and suppose that $X$ is a $\Lambda$-lattice such that $K \otimes_{\mathcal{O}} X$ is free of rank $n$ over $A$. Then $X$ contains a (non-unique) free $\Lambda$-sublattice of rank $n$. The main result of the present article is to show there exists such a sublattice $Y$ such that the generalised module index $[X : Y]_{\mathcal{O}}$ has explicit upper bounds with respect to division that are independent of $X$ and can be chosen to satisfy certain conditions. We give examples of applications to the approximation of normal integral bases and strong Minkowski units, and to the Galois module structure of rational points over abelian varieties.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the complexity of isomorphisms between scattered linear orders of constructive ranks. We give the general upper bound and prove that this bound is sharp. Also, we construct examples showing that the categoricity level of a given scattered linear order can be an arbitrary ordinal from 3 to the upper bound, except for the case when the ordinal is the successor of a limit ordinal. The existence question of the scattered linear orders whose categoricity level equals the successor of a limit ordinal is still open.

Abstract:Generalised indiscernibles highlight a strong link between model theory and structural Ramsey theory. In this paper, we use generalised indiscernibles as tools to prove results in both these areas. More precisely, we first show that a reduct of an ultrahomogenous $\aleph_0$-categorical structure which has higher arity than the original structure cannot be Ramsey. In particular, the only nontrivial Ramsey reduct of the generically ordered random $k$-hypergraph is the linear order. We then turn our attention to model-theoretic dividing lines that are characterised by collapsing generalised indiscernibles, and prove, for these dividing lines, several transfer principles in (full and lexicographic) products of structures. As an application, we construct new algorithmically tame classes of graphs.

Abstract:We study -categorical MS -measurable structures. Our main result is that a certain class of -categorical Hrushovski constructions, supersimple of finite SU -rank is not MS -measurable. These results complement the work of Evans on a conjecture of Macpherson and Elwes. In constrast to Evans' work, our structures may satisfy independent n -amalgamation for all n . We also prove some general results in the context of -categorical MS -measurable structures. Firstly, in these structures, the dimension in the MS -dimension-measure can be chosen to be SU -rank. Secondly, non-forking independence implies a form of probabilistic independence in the measure. The latter follows from more general unpublished results of Hrushovski, but we provide a self-contained proof.

Abstract:Computable reducibility is a well-established notion that allows to compare the complexity of various equivalence relations over the natural numbers. We generalize computable reducibility by introducing degree spectra of reducibility and bi-reducibility. These spectra provide a natural way of measuring the complexity of reductions between equivalence relations. We prove that any upward closed collection of Turing degrees with a countable basis can be realised as a reducibility spectrum or as a bi-reducibility spectrum. We show also that there is a reducibility spectrum of computably enumerable equivalence relations with no countable basis and a reducibility spectrum of computably enumerable equivalence relations which is downward dense, thus has no basis.

Constructing linked systems of relative difference sets via Schur rings

Abstract:In the present paper, we study relative difference sets (RDSs) and linked systems of them. It is shown that a closed linked system of RDSs is always graded by a group. Based on this result, we also define a product of RDS linked systems sharing the same grading group. Further, we generalize the Davis-Polhill-Smith construction of a linked system of RDSs. Finally, we construct new linked system of RDSs in a Heisenberg group over a finite field and family of RDSs in an extraspecial $p$-group of exponent $p^2$. All constructions of new RDSs and their linked systems are based essentially on a usage of cyclotomic Schur rings.

Abstract:We show that if $E$ is a countable Borel equivalence relation on $\mathbb{R}^n$, then there is a closed subset $A \subset [0,1]^n$ of Hausdorff dimension $n$ so that $E \restriction A$ is smooth. More generally, if $\leq_Q$ is a locally countable Borel quasi-order on $2^{\omega}$ and $g$ is any gauge function of lower order than the identity, then there is a closed set $A$ so that $A$ is an antichain in $\leq_Q$ and $H^g(A) > 0$.

Abstract:A family of subsets $\mathcal{F} \subseteq \mathcal{P}(\{1, 2, \ldots, n\})$ has the disparate union property if any two disjoint subfamilies $\mathcal{F}_1, \mathcal{F}_2 \subseteq \mathcal{F}$ have distinct unions $\bigcup \mathcal{F}_1 \neq \bigcup \mathcal{F}_2$; what is the maximal size of a family with the disparate union property? Is there a simple and efficiently computable characterization of size-maximal families? This paper highlights a class of partially-ordered semirings -- difference ordered semirings with a multiplicatively absorbing element -- and shows it is common and easily constructed. We prove that a suitably modified definition of linear independence for semimodules over such semirings enjoys the same maximality property as for vector spaces, and can furthermore be efficiently detected by the bideterminant. These properties allow us to extend dimension argument in extremal combinatorics and provide simple and direct solutions to the puzzles above.

Abstract:We prove an arithmetic regularity lemma for stable subsets of finite abelian groups, generalising our previous result for high-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields of prime order. A qualitative version of this generalisation was recently obtained by the first author in joint work with Conant and Pillay, using model-theoretic techniques. In contrast, the approach in the present paper is highly quantitative and relies on several key ingredients from arithmetic combinatorics.
