Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.
Recent Progress of the Researches on the Positive and Negative Refractions of the Visible Light Propagating at the Metal-based Interface

Abstract:Snell's law reveals the propagation and refraction properties of the light when it passes through the interface composed by two media with different optical constants.It is the foundation of modern physical and geometrical optics.The effort to realize a perfect lens is trying to find the material with a negative refractive index,which has not yet been found in the natural material in past years.In this work,we have fabricated a series of noble-metal-based film samples(Au and Ag) with different incident angles.We quantitatively mea-sured the refraction of the light passing through the metal/air interface,and observed that the refraction can change from negative to positive in the visible range at the simplest natural metal/air interface.The mechanisms for causing the negative refraction have been carefully discussed and analyzed,and are not attributed to the effects,such as the plasmon resonance,the negative permeability,the Goos-Hnchen shift,and so on.We hope,therefore,the results given in this work will stimulate people to understand more of the physical origin of the negative refraction happened in the metal-based artificial materials,and will help its application in the photonics material and device design and fabrication in the future.

Abstract:This book presents a comprehensive account of the recent progress in optical fiber research. It consists of four sections with 20 chapters covering the topics of nonlinear and polarisation effects in optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers and new applications for optical fibers. Section 1 reviews nonlinear effects in optical fibers in terms of theoretical analysis, experiments and applications. Experimental Investigation on Slow Light and Optical Pulse Propagation with Negative Group Velocity in the Electromagnetically Induced Medium

Abstract:In this paper we report that we observed slow light of the optical pulse in the EIT medium and superluminal phenomena or negative group velocity of the pulse in the EIA medium, the speed of light in EIT medium was c/30000 and the speed of light in EIA was - c/3000. EIT and EIA was observed in Zeeman hyperfine structure system of cesium atoms.

Abstract:Scientific community has well recognized that a Lorentzian medium exhibits anomalous dispersion behavior in its resonance absorption region. To satisfy the Krammers-Kronig relation, such an anomalous region has to be accompanied with significant loss and thus, experimental observations of negative group velocity in this region generally require a gain-assisted approach. In this letter, we demonstrate that the negative group velocity can also be observed in the absence of absorption resonance. We show that the k-surface of a passive uniaxial Lorentzian medium undergoes a distortion near the plasma frequency. This process yields an anomalous dispersion bandwidth that is far away from the absorption resonance region and enables the observation of negative group velocity at the plasma frequency band. Introducing anomalous dispersion in a well-controlled manner would greatly benefit the research of ultrafast photonics and find potential applications in optical delay lines, optical data storage and devices for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Dielectric constant (ε, epsilon) is one of the basic physical parameters for materials, determining the response of materials to electromagnetic waves or electrical field; its value is generally positive. In fact, dielectric constant can also be negative, regarded as supernormal performance to some degree. The negative dielectric property has become research hotspot as an essential key for constructing metamaterials, showing unique and exotic electromagnetic properties not existing in naturally occurring materials, such as negative refraction, perfect troubles, and reverse Doppler effect. Recently, the feasibility is demonstrated to achieve negative dielectric property in conventional heterogeneous composites rather than periodic artificial arrays; drawing great attention from researchers in material science and engineering, many advances have been made and can promote the development of metamaterials and conventional electromagnetic functional materials. Here, we reviewed the recent advances in negative dielectric property designed in some heterogeneous composites, including metal composites, carbon composites, ceramic composites, conducting polymer. Besides, various strategies, including designing different microstructures, changing the working temperatures, choosing flexible matrix or fillers, electro-magnetic coupling, were summarized to precisely adjust negative dielectric property. Finally, the question unsolved and perspectives about negative dielectric property are put forward; we expect to shed light on the mechanism of negative dielectric property as well as its relationship with the material design in composition and microstructure.Graphical abstractNegative dielectric constant is regarded as supernormal performance, recent advances in negative dielectric property designed in some heterogeneous composites have been reviewed.

Abstract:A short overview is presented on the research works related to the zero- gap, which appears as the volume-averaged refraction index vanishes in photonic structures containing both positive and negative-index materials. After introducing the basic concept of the zero- gap based on both rigorous mathematics and numerical simulations, the unique properties of such a band gap are discussed, including its robustness against weak disorder, wide-incidence-angle operation and scaling invariance, which do not belong to a conventional Bragg gap. We then describe the simulation and experimental verifications on the zero- gap and its extraordinary properties in different frequency domains. After that, the unusual photonic and physical effects discovered based on the zero- gap and their potential applications are reviewed, including beam manipulations and nonlinear effects. Before concluding this review, several interesting ideas inspired from the zero- gap works will be introduced, including the zero-phase gaps, zero-permittivity and zero-permeability gaps, complete band gaps, and zero-refraction-index materials with Dirac-Cone dispersion.

Abstract:Negative refraction is a fantastic optical property and attracts more and more attentions. As first proposed, materials with negative permittivity and negative permeability simultaneously exhibit negative refraction. Recently, negative refraction was found in the indefinite medium based on the strong anisotropy of permittivity. In this paper, the theory of the negative refraction in the anisotropic materials and the research progress in recent years were reviewed.

Abstract:Negative permittivity (ε′ < 0), considered a supernormal property, has broadened the range of electromagnetic parameters. It provides a new principle for the design of high-end electronic devices, such as optical circuits, high-integrated chips, and electromagnetic point connectors. Negative permittivity is previously achieved by periodic array and is considered an artificial property. In recent years, the feasibility of realizing negative permittivity was demonstrated in the materials by adjusting the composition and microstructure of materials, especially in percolative composites consisting of conductive fillers and insulative matrix, which then has rapidly attracted great attention of researchers working in the field of materials science and engineering. In this review, we introduced the mechanisms of negative permittivity and summarized the recent research progress of negative permittivity performance in percolative composites with different compositions and microstructures. Besides, we introduced the potential applications of negative permittivity materials in dielectric capacitors and electromagnetic shielding. Finally, we put forward the challenges and prospects of negative permittivity performance in percolative composites, indicating the trend and focus of future research.

Abstract:In recent years a very exciting and intense activity has been devoted to the understanding and construction of materials that enjoy exotic optical properties, such as a negative refractive index. Motivated by these experimental and theoretical developments, we use the string-inspired idea of holography to study the electromagnetic response of a certain class of media: strongly coupled relativistic systems that admit a dual gravitational description. Our results indicate that this type of media generally have a negative refractive index. Moreover we observe that a negative refractive index could be a common feature of relativistic hydrodynamic systems at low frequencies.

Abstract:In this paper , we describe the mechanism of chiral negative refraction phenomenon , and summarize the research progress on simulations and experiments of metamaterial in recent years .Meanwhile , we analysis the optical activity , chiral parameters , losses and so on , and introduce the applications of chiral negative re-fraction materials in various fields .According to the analysis , we believe that it is one of important develop-ment directions for chiral negative refractive index materials to explore new mechanism , new methods and new materials, so as to achieve negative refraction in visible range in the future .
New insight into light propagation and light-matter interactions with applications to experimental observations

Abstract:The paper provides a new understanding of light propagation and light-matter interactions by examining the physical implications of group velocity, electromagnetic (EM) power flow, Poynting theorem, energy conservation law, and Fermat's principle. A criterion is set up to identify the justification of the group velocity definition, and a modified definition is proposed to remove the flaws that the classical definition has. It is reasonably argued that energy conservation law and Fermat's principle are physical postulates independent of Maxwell equations. A ``superluminal power flow'' is constructed to show that Poynting theorem cannot uniquely define the EM power flow if the energy conservation law or Fermat's principle is not taken into account. As an application, associated basic concepts in textbooks and experimental observations reported in recent research works are also reviewed, including: why the traditional formulation of Fermat's principle has a limited application; how the Fermat's principle is formulated for a plane wave; why the Fermat's principle is consistent with Maxwell EM theory; what the significant difference is between Poynting theorem and energy conservation law; why Poynting vector as EM power flow may break energy conservation law and Fermat's principle in an anisotropic medium; why the physical explanations for ``spatially structured'' photons in Giovannini-coworkers experiments are not consistent with the principle of relativity; why the traditionally-argued invariance of information velocity contradicts Maxwell equations; and why the superluminal light pulse propagation claimed in Wang-Kuzmich-Dogariu experiments voilates Einstein causality.

Abstract:The major issue regarding magnetic response in nature-"negative values for the permeability mu of material parameters, especially in terahertz or optical region" makes the electromagnetic properties of natural materials asymmetric. Recently, research in metamaterials has grown in significance because these artificial materials can demonstrate special and, indeed, extraordinary electromagnetic phenomena such as the inverse of Snell's law and novel applications. A critical topic in metamaterials is the artificial negative magnetic response, which can be designed in the higher frequency regime ( from microwave to optical range). Artificial magnetism illustrates new physics and new applications, which have been demonstrated over the past few years. In this review, we present recent developments in research on artificial magnetic metamaterials including split-ring resonator structures, sandwich structures, and high permittivity-based dielectric composites. Engineering applications such as invisibility cloaking, negative refractive index medium, and slowing light fall into this category. We also discuss the possibility that metamaterials can be suitable for realizing new and exotic electromagnetic properties.
