Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a periodic (grating) structure. An inhomogeneous (subwavelength) object is placed inside the periodic structure. The scattering problem is to study the electromagnetic field distributions. The problem arises in the study of near-field optics and has many physical and biological applications. This work is devoted to modeling and analysis of a near-field optics problem. An integral representation approach is presented to solve the problem. It is shown particularly that the perturbation due to the object decays exponentially along the periodic direction of the structure, provided that no surface waves occur. Based on the approach, a general solution method is discussed and the well-posedness of the model problems are established.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:In this work, numerical solution to a general electromagnetic (EM) system is studied using a formalism based on the formulas for the E–B–A– $\phi $ formulas with different gauge conditions. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to discretize these formulas. In addition, the convolutional perfectly matched layer (CPML) technique is successfully applied to absorb outgoing scattered waves described by the proposed formulas. The gauge invariance of EM fields in inhomogeneous environment is demonstrated by numerical examples. Moreover, the proposed EM framework integrated with the Schrödinger equation is introduced to investigate the mesoscopic phenomenon for light–matter interaction, which is useful to design laser pulses for controlling discrete quantum states. The work offers a simple and general numerical EM framework, which is essential to bridge the classical EM and quantum mechanical systems.
Mathematical Modeling and Computation of the Optical Response from Nanostructures

Abstract:This dissertation studies the computational modeling for nanostructures in response to external electromagnetic fields. Light-matter interactions on nanoscale are at the heart of nano-optics. To fully characterize the optical interactions with nanostructures quantum electrodynamics (QED) must be invoked, however, the required extremely intense computation and analysis prohibit QED from applications in nano-optics. To avoid the expensive computations and be able to seize the essential quantum effects a semiclassical model is developed. The wellposedness of the model partial differential equations is established. Emphasis is placed on the optical interactions with an individual nanostructure, excitons and biexcitons effects and finite-size effects are investigated. The crucial step of our model is to couple the electromagnetic fields with the motion of the excited particles to yield a new dielectric constant which contains quantum effects of interest. A novel feature of the dielectric constant is the wavevector-dependence which leads to a multi-wave propagation inside the medium. Additional boundary conditions are proposed to deal with this situation. We proceed with incorporating this dielectric constant to Maxwell's equations, and by solving a scattering problem the quantum effects can be captured in the scattered spectra.

Abstract:Our recent study of multi-physical modeling and multi-scale computation of nano-optical responses is presented in this paper. The semi-classical theory treats the evolution of the electromagnetic (EM) field and the motion of the charged particles concurently by coupling Maxwell equations with Quantum Mechanics. A new efficient computational framework is proposed (in Bao, Liu, and Luo, A maitiscaie method for optical responses of nano structures; and Bao, Liu, and Luo, Multi-scale modeling and computation of nano-optical responses) by integrating the Time Dependent Current Density Functional Theory (TD-CDFT), which leads to the coupled Maxwell-Kohn-Sham equations determining the EM field as well as the current and electron densities simultaneously. In the regime of linear responses, a self-consistent multi-scale method is proposed to deal with the well separated space scales. Related recent research on developing adaptive Finite Element Methods for the Kohn-Sham equation (Bao, Hu, and Liu (2012); Bao, Hu, and Liu (to appear)) is also discussed.

Abstract:Technological advancements have driven the humanity for the past five decades. In many of these technological advances, computational electromagnetics has played a major role. From the design of aeroplanes down to consumer electronics, the field of computational electromagnetics has been growing steadily in terms of maturity, complexity, as well as performance. However, innovation does not seem to slow down anytime soon. The dimension of technological devices continues to shrink down to nano scale. This also results in an ongoing research in the field of nano photonics to bring the speed of light down to the nano scale regime and integrate them with electronics. All these new advances demand a new and further development of current techniques for computational electromagnetics. In this paper, we will present some of our works that tackles the issue of computational electromagnetics as it is applied to nanoscale devices.

Abstract:The advancement in micro and nano-scale technologies demands in depth understanding of magnetic behaviors. For example, as the ever increasing need for high capacity data storage continuously pushes the boundaries of magnetic recording technology to the physical limits, detailed analysis of the magnetic properties becomes necessary. It is expected that finite element micromagnetics can predict the magnetic behavior with high accuracy taking complex microstructure of magnetic materials into account. In practice, however, the tradeoff is speed and accuracy. This paper reviews the numerical methods used in micromagnetic simulations and presents practical examples in the field of nanotechnology and magnetic recording.

Abstract:Since 1990, the electromagnetic theory of gratings has received considerable attention from the applied mathematics community. Several approaches and numerical methods have been developed, including integral methods Dobson and Friedman [9], analytical continuation method Bruno and Reitich [7], and variational methods Dobson [8], Abboud [1], and Bao [3]. Significant results on existence, uniqueness, and convergence of solutions of the Maxwell have been obtained. We refer to Bao, Dobson, and Cox [5] for a survey of recent mathematical and computational results. A good introduction to the problem of electromagnetic diffraction through periodic structures can be found in Petit [12]. See also Gaylord and Moharam [10], Li [11], … for other approaches, particularly along the line of differential methods.

Abstract:In this work, the scattering field excited by the perfect conducting quadratic surface is comprehensively studied. The numerical steepest descent path method (NSDP) is invoked to calculate the high oscillatory physical optics integral. Its result agrees very well with the Gordon's integral than asymptotical method. Moreover, the computation effort for the highly oscillatory integral is frequency independent. In the end, we use the Fourier quadrature method to calculate transition and deep shadow scattering field excited by the conducting cylinder.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate mathematical models for electromagnetic wave propagation in dispersive isotropic media. We emphasize the link between physical requirements and mathematical properties of the models. A particular attention is devoted to the notions of non-dissipativity and passivity. We consider successively the cases of so-called local media and then of general passive media. The models are studied through energy techniques, spectral theory and dispersion analysis of plane waves. For making the article self-contained, we provide in appendix some useful mathematical background.

Abstract:The research work of this year is focused on the microscopic dynamics model of metallic micro/nano-structures and the related theories of electromagnetic fields. The physical mechanism of the field enhancement, transmission enhancement and absorption enhancement of metallic micro/nano-structures is analyzed. The properties of some electromagnetic modes and of their scattering coefficients in metallic micro/nano-structures are provided. The coupling between the surface plasmon polariton and quantum systems is investigated and the waveguides of surface plasmon polaritons are studied.

Abstract:In this work, high-frequency computational electromagnetic methods including the multilevel fast physical optics (MLFPO) method and iterative physical optics (IPO) method based on quadratic patches are proposed to accelerate the calculation of physical optics (PO) integral of electrically large target and enhance computational accuracy of target with multiple scattering effects. In actual scenario, targets are located at the near zone of radar, thus the near-field linear-amplitude based fast physical optics method (LFPO) is presented to describe radiation features of target. To compensate for the lack of these PO-based methods in neglecting the contribution of currents in the dark region of target, the incremental length of diffraction coefficient (ILDC) method based on shadow boundary is proposed to solve the diffracted field of creeping wave. Moreover, a parametric scattering center model based on stationary phase method (SPM) is discussed to analyze scattering features of complex target. Efficiency and accuracy of these methods are verified via numerical examples. Presented computational electromagnetic methods are of great significance to the analysis of high-frequency electromagnetic characteristics.
