Abstract:The book chapter will aim at introducing the background knowledge, basic theories, supporting techniques, numerical results, and future research for the high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme. The theories of symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian are reviewed in Section 2 followed by the symplectiness of Maxwell's equations presented in Section 3. Next, the numerical stability and dispersion analyses are given in Section 4. Then, in Section 5, we will make a tour of the supporting techniques but do not discuss them in detail. These techniques involve source excitation, perfectly matched layer, near-to-far-field transformation, inhomogeneous boundary treatments, and parameter extractions. The numerical results on propagation, scattering, and guided-wave problems are shown in Section 6. The high-order symplectic finite-difference time-domain scheme demonstrates the powerful advantages and potentials for the time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations, especially for electrically-large objects and for long-term simulation. Finally, the conclusion and future research are summarized in Section 7.

Abstract:First, we emphasize the importance of Maxwell's equations (1865) [1] which have withstood the test of length scales, special relativity (1905) [2], and quantum theory (1927) [3]. Moreover, a differential geometry description of Maxwell's equations (1945) [4] had inspired the Yang-Mills theory (1954) [5], also known as the generalized electromagnetic theory.

Abstract:The connections between Maxwell's equations and symplectic matrix are studied. First, we analyze the continuous-time Maxwell's differential equations in free space and verify its time evolution matrix (TEMA) is symplectic-unitary matrix for complex space or symplectic-orthogonal matrix for real space. Second, the spatial differential operators are discretized by pseudo-spectral (PS) approach with collocated grid and by finite-difference (FD) method with staggered grid. For the PS approach, the TEMA conserves symplectic-unitary property. For the FD method, the TEMA conserves symplectic-orthogonal property. Finally, symplectic integration scheme is used in the time direction. In particular, we find the symplectiness of the TEMA also can be conserved. The mathematical proofs presented are helpful for deep researching the symplectic PSTD approach and the symplectic FDTD method.

Abstract:The paper is concerned with electromagnetic wave propagation in a perturbed periodic structure. Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a biperiodic (grating) structure. A single inhomogeneous object is placed inside the biperiodic structure. The scattering problem is to study the electromagnetic field distributions. The problem arises in the study of near-field optics and has recently found many applications in physics and biology. In this paper, an integral representation approach is presented to solve the problem. Using the approach, well-posedness of the model problem is established. In addition, it is shown that the perturbation due to the object is exponentially decaying along the periodic directions of the structure, provided that no surface waves occur.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the mathematical analysis of the diffraction of an electromagnetic plane wave by a biperiodic structure. The wave propagation is governed by the time-domain Maxwell equations in three dimensions. The method of a compressed coordinate transformation is proposed to reduce equivalently the diffraction problem into an initial-boundary value problem formulated in a bounded domain over a finite time interval. The reduced problem is shown to have a unique weak solution by using the constructive Galerkin method. The stability and a priori estimates with explicit time dependence are established for the weak solution.

Abstract:A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent states.

Abstract:Consider a time–harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a biperiodic structure in ℝ3. The periodic structure separates two homogeneous regions. The medium inside the structure is chiral and heterogeneous. In general, wave propagation in the chiral medium is governed by Maxwell's equations together with the Drude– Born–Fedorov (constitutive) equations. In this paper, the diffraction problem is formulated in a bounded domain by introducing a pair of transparent boundary conditions. It is then shown that for all but possibly a discrete set of parameters, there is a unique quasi–periodic weak solution to the diffraction problem. Our proof is based on the Hodge decomposition, a compact imbedding result, and the Lax–Milgram Lemma. In addition, an energy conservation for the weak solution is also shown.

Abstract:A novel symplectic algorithm is proposed to solve the Maxwell-Schrödinger(M-S) system for investigating light-matter interaction. Using the fourth-ordersymplectic integration and fourth-order collocated differences,Maxwell-Schrödinger equations are discretized in temporal and spatialdomains, respectively. The symplectic finite-difference time-domain (SFDTD)algorithm is developed for accurate and efficient study of coherent interactionbetween electromagnetic fields and artificial atoms. Particularly, theDirichlet boundary condition is adopted for modeling the Rabi oscillationproblems under the semi-classical framework. To implement the Dirichletboundary condition, image theory is introduced, tailored to the high-ordercollocated differences. For validating the proposed SFDTD algorithm,three-dimensional numerical studies of the population inversion in the Rabioscillation are presented. Numerical results show that the proposed high-orderSFDTD(4,4) algorithm exhibits better numerical performance than theconventional FDTD(2,2) approach at the aspects of accuracy and efficiency forthe long-term simulation. The proposed algorithm opens up a promising waytowards a high-accurate energy-conservation modeling and simulation of complexdynamics in nanoscale light-matter interaction.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new direct approach to solving Maxwell's equations in time domain. Completely different from the classic one, this approach is derived and analysed based on a strategy which is independent of the well-known Fourier (or Laplace) transformation and the corresponding inverse transformation. The analysis first decouples Maxwell's equations on the basis of a potential theory and then uses an operator-variation-of-constants formula (the Duhamel Principle) to achieve the expression of exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. We further illustrate the simplicity and multi-purpose applicability of the new approach in linear, homogeneous, isotropic and lossless (bounded or unbounded and source-free or source) medium (in rectangular, cylindrical or spherical coordinates). Moreover, we make a study on impulse electromagnetics. With this new approach, this paper bridges the gap between the time domain electromagnetics and the frequency domain electromagnetics.

Abstract:Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a perfectly conducting biperiodic surface (crossed grating). The diffraction is modeled as a boundary value problem for the three-dimensional Maxwell equation. The surface is assumed to be a small and smooth deformation of a planar surface. In this paper, a novel approach is developed to solve the inverse diffraction grating problem in the near-field regime, which is to reconstruct the surface with resolution beyond Rayleigh's criterion. The method requires only a single incident field with one polarization, one frequency, and one incident direction, and is realized by using the fast Fourier transform. Numerical results show that the method is simple, efficient, and stable to reconstruct biperiodic surfaces with subwavelength resolution.

Abstract:This article presents a stabilized nodal discontinuous Galerkin pseudospectral time-domain (DG-PSTD) algorithm for fully anisotropic electromagnetic waves. This solver permits arbitrary high-order basis functions and adaptive hexahedral elements, thus very efficient for large-scale wave propagation in complex media. Maxwell’s equations are reformulated in a unified hyperbolic form, where a localized anisotropic Riemann solver is derived to serve as a numerical flux to exchange information across adjacent elements in the DG-PSTD scheme. This local analysis method also helps impose the time-domain anisotropic plane wave incidence in the total/scattering field framework. Numerical validations and applications demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and capability of this new high-order solver for 3-D large-scale generally anisotropic electromagnetic media.
Optimized Operator-Splitting Methods in Numerical Integration of Maxwell's Equations

Abstract:Optimized operator splitting methods for numerical integration of the time domain Maxwell’s equations in computational electromagnetics (CEM) are proposed for the first time. The methods are based on splitting the time domain evolution operator of Maxwell’s equations into suboperators, and corresponding time coefficients are obtained by reducing the norm of truncation terms to a minimum. The general high-order staggered finite difference is introduced for discretizing the three-dimensional curl operator in the spatial domain. The detail of the schemes and explicit iterated formulas are also included. Furthermore, new high-order Padé approximations are adopted to improve the efficiency of the proposed methods. Theoretical proof of the stability is also included. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the schemes. It is found that the optimized schemes with coarse discretized grid and large Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) number can obtain satisfactory numerical results, which in turn proves to be a promising method, with advantages of high accuracy, low computational resources and facility of large domain and long-time simulation. In addition, due to the generality, our optimized schemes can be extended to other science and engineering areas directly.
Scattering Analysis of Periodic Structures Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method

Abstract:Periodic structures are of great importance in electromagnetics due to their wide range of applications such as frequency selective surfaces (FSS), electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structures, periodic absorbers, meta-materials, and many others. The aim of this book is to develop efficient computational algorithms to analyze the scattering properties of various electromagnetic periodic structures using the finite-difference time-domain periodic boundary condition (FDTD/PBC) method. A new FDTD/PBC-based algorithm is introduced to analyze general skewed grid periodic structures while another algorithm is developed to analyze dispersive periodic structures. Moreover, the proposed algorithms are successfully integrated with the generalized scattering matrix (GSM) technique, identified as the hybrid FDTD-GSM algorithm, to efficiently analyze multilayer periodic structures. All the developed algorithms are easy to implement and are efficient in both computational time and memory usage. These algorithms are validated through several numerical test cases. The computational methods presented in this book will help scientists and engineers to investigate and design novel periodic structures and to explore other research frontiers in electromagnetics. Abstract:Significant recent technology advances have been made in nonlinear optics due to rapid developments of laser technology and nonlinear optical materials. Examples of nonlinear optics include laser technology, spectroscopy, optical switching and sensors, parametric amplifiers and oscillators, optical computing, and communications. A remarkable application is to generate powerful coherent radiation at a frequency that is twice that of available lasers, socalled second harmonic generation (SHG). However, nonlinear optical effects are generally very weak without effective enhancement. Recently, a novel idea to enhance the nonlinear interaction between the material and the light by using periodic (or grating) structures has been successfully explored by physicists and engineers. In particular, it has been announced [8], [9] that SHG can be greatly enhanced by using diffraction gratings.

Abstract:Consider a plane wave incident on a biperiodic diffractive structure. The diffraction problem may be modeled by Maxwell's equations with transparent boundary conditions and solved by a finite element method. In this paper, a variational approximation is studied. The well-posedness of the continuous and discretized problems is established in the following sense. In the continuous case, it is shown that the model problem attains a unique H-1 solution for all but possibly a discrete set of frequencies. In the discrete case, error estimates for the variational (finite element) approximation of the model problem with or without truncation of the nonlocal boundary operators are obtained.

In this paper, variational formulations coupling finite element methods in the chiral medium with a method of integral equations on the periodic interfaces are studied. The well-posedness of the continuous and discretized problems is established. Uniform convergence for the coupling variational approximations of the model problem is obtained.
