Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:Quantization of the electromagnetic field (called quantum electromagnetics here) has been a fascinating and important subject since its introduction by Dirac in 1927. However, this knowledge is often inaccessible to technologists such as engineers. This subject will be discussed in its simplest terms so that it can be easily understood by a larger community of researchers. To this end, a new way of motivating Hamiltonian mechanics is presented. Furthermore, a novel way of deriving the quantum equations of motion for electromagnetics and Maxwell's equations is presented.

Abstract:The connections between Maxwell's equations and symplectic matrix are studied. First, we analyze the continuous-time Maxwell's differential equations in free space and verify its time evolution matrix (TEMA) is symplectic-unitary matrix for complex space or symplectic-orthogonal matrix for real space. Second, the spatial differential operators are discretized by pseudo-spectral (PS) approach with collocated grid and by finite-difference (FD) method with staggered grid. For the PS approach, the TEMA conserves symplectic-unitary property. For the FD method, the TEMA conserves symplectic-orthogonal property. Finally, symplectic integration scheme is used in the time direction. In particular, we find the symplectiness of the TEMA also can be conserved. The mathematical proofs presented are helpful for deep researching the symplectic PSTD approach and the symplectic FDTD method.

Abstract:Although electrons (fermions) and photons(bosons) produce the same interference patterns in the two-slit experiments, the description of these patterns is markedly different. Photons are spin one, relativistic and massless while electrons are spin 1/2 massive particles producing the same interference patterns. In spite of these differences, already in early 30ies of 20ieth century the isomorphism between the source-free Maxwell and Dirac equations was established. It permitted us to replace Born probabilistic interpretation of quantum mechanics with the optical. In 1925 Rainich combined source-free Maxwell equations with Einstein's equations for gravity. His results were rediscovered by Misner and Wheeler in their "geometrodynamics". Absence of sources in it remained a problem until Ranada's work. His results required the existence of null electromagnetic fields absent in geometrodynamics. They were added later on by Geroch. Ranada's solutions of source-free Maxwell's equations came out as knots and links. In this work new proof of knotty nature of the electron is established. The obtained result perfectly blends with the descripion of rotating and charged black hole.

Abstract:Symmetries in physical systems are defined in terms of conserved Noether Currents of the associated Lagrangian. In electrodynamic systems, global symmetry is defined through conservation of charges, which is reflected in gauge symmetry; however, loss of charges from a radiating system can be interpreted as localized loss of the Noether current which implies that electrodynamic symmetry has been locally broken. Thus, we propose that global symmetries and localized symmetry breaking are interwoven into the framework of Maxwell's equations which appear as globally conserved and locally non-conserved charges in an electrodynamic system and define the geometric topology of the electromagnetic field. We apply the ideas in the context of explaining radiation from dielectric materials with low physical dimensions. We also briefly look at the nature of reversibility in electromagnetic wave generation which was initially proposed by Planck, but opposed by Einstein and in recent years by Zoh.This article is part of the theme issue 'Celebrating 125 years of Oliver Heaviside's 'Electromagnetic Theory''.

Abstract:Beginning from the integral forms of the four physics laws, we derive Maxwell’s equations for a mechano-driven, slow, nonuniform moving speed media system based on Galilean space and time, thus presenting a new approach for solving the electromagnetic field problems in a moving system with acceleration. For the electromagnetism of macro-objects on Earth, we believe that the relativistic effect can be generally ignored. Different from the classical texts on electrodynamics, which assumes motion is a constant speed along a straight line in the inertial frame, our theory describes the electromagnetism of the media systems in the noninertial frame with acceleration and time-dependent volume, shape, and boundary. Most importantly, the expanded Maxwell’s equations are solved through mathematical means. Our objective is to study the dynamics of coupling among the mechano-electric-magnetic multifields. Lastly, the expansion of the boundary conditions at the nanoscale boundaries and the application of the Maxwell’s equations in a lumped circuit system are discussed.

Abstract:In classical Maxwell's electromagnetism, monopole term of the electric field is proportional to $r^{-2}$, while higher order multipole terms, sourced by anisotropic sources, fall-off faster. However, in nonlinear electromagnetism even a spherically symmetric field has multipole-like contributions. We prove that the leading subdominant term of the electric field, defined by nonlinear electromagnetic Lagrangian obeying Maxwellian weak field limit, in a static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat spacetime, is of the order $O(r^{-6})$ as $r \to \infty$. Moreover, using Lagrange inversion theorem and Faà di Bruno's formula, we derive the series expansion of the electric field from the Taylor series of an analytic electromagnetic Lagrangian.

Abstract:Using Maxwell's mental imagery of a tube of fluid motion of an imaginary fluid, we derive his equations $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{E} = -\frac{\partial \mathbf{B}}{\partial t}$, $\operatorname{curl} \mathbf{H} = \frac{\partial \mathbf{D}}{\partial t} + \mathbf{j}$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{D} = \varrho$, $\operatorname{div} \mathbf{B} = 0$, which together with the constituting relations $\mathbf{D} = \varepsilon_0 \mathbf{E}$, $\mathbf{B} = \mu_0 \mathbf{H}$, form what we call today Maxwell's equations. Main tools are the divergence, curl and gradient integration theorems and a version of Poincare's lemma formulated in vector calculus notation. Remarks on the history of the development of electrodynamic theory, quotations and references to original and secondary literature complement the paper.

Abstract:The formulation of a complete theory of classical electromagnetism by Maxwell is one of the milestones of science. The capacity of many-body systems to provide emergent mini-universes with vacua quite distinct from the one we inhabit was only recognized much later. Here, we provide an account of how simple systems of localized spins manage to emulate Maxwell electromagnetism in their low-energy behaviour. They are much less constrained by symmetry considerations than the relativistically invariant electromagnetic vacuum, as their substrate provides a non-relativistic background with even translational invariance broken. They can exhibit rich behaviour not encountered in conventional electromagnetism. This includes the existence of magnetic monopole excitations arising from fractionalization of magnetic dipoles; as well as the capacity of disorder, by generating defects on the lattice scale, to produce novel physics, as exemplified by topological spin glassiness or random Coulomb magnetism. Abstract:The article presents a simple, rigorous approach to introduce electromagnetic theory derived from a new, fundamental form of Gausss law using only the basic spacetime transformation relations of special relativity. More advanced concepts of relativistic mechanics, such as the transformation of mass, momentum, and force, are not necessary in this development, resulting in a simple theory. The material fills an educational need to introduce the modern theory of relativity into the teaching of engineering electromagnetics. The approach is suitable for a senior (even a junior) undergraduate and an introductory graduate engineering class, depending on the level of depth and rigor.

Abstract:We present quantum algorithms for electromagnetic fields governed by Maxwell's equations. The algorithms are based on the Schr\"odingersation approach, which transforms any linear PDEs and ODEs with non-unitary dynamics into a system evolving under unitary dynamics, via a warped phase transformation that maps the equation into one higher dimension. In this paper, our quantum algorithms are based on either a direct approximation of Maxwell's equations combined with Yee's algorithm, or a matrix representation in terms of Riemann-Silberstein vectors combined with a spectral approach and an upwind scheme. We implement these algorithms with physical boundary conditions, including perfect conductor and impedance boundaries. We also solve Maxwell's equations for a linear inhomogeneous medium, specifically the interface problem. Several numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the validity of this approach. In addition, instead of qubits, the quantum algorithms can also be formulated in the continuous variable quantum framework, which allows the quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations in analog quantum simulation.

Abstract:The QCDSP machines were designed for lattice gauge calculations. For planning it is crucial to explore this architecture for other computationally intensive tasks. Here I describe an implementation of a simple message passing scheme. With the objective being simplicity, I introduce a small number of generic functions for manipulating a large data set spread over the machine. I test the scheme on three applications: a fast Fourier transform, arbitrary dimension SU(N) pure lattice gauge theory, and the manipulation of Fermionic Fock states through a distributed hash table. These routines compile both on QCDSP and a Unix workstation.

Abstract:Maxwell’s vacuum equations are integrated for admissible electromagnetic fields in homogeneous spaces. Admissible electromagnetic fields are those for which the space group generates an algebra of symmetry operators (integrals of motion) that is isomorphic to the algebra of group operators. Two frames associated with the group of motions are used to obtain systems of ordinary differential equations to which Maxwell’s equations reduce. The solutions are obtained in quadratures. The potentials of the admissible electromagnetic fields and the metrics of the spaces contained in the obtained solutions depend on six arbitrary time functions, so it is possible to use them to integrate field equations in the theory of gravity.

Independence of Maxwell's equations: A Bäcklund-transformation view

Abstract:It is now widely accepted that the Maxwell equations of Electrodynamics constitute a self-consistent set of four independent partial differential equations. According to a certain school of thought, however, half of these equations - namely, those expressing the two Gauss' laws for the electric and the magnetic field - are redundant since they can be "derived" from the remaining two laws and the principle of conservation of charge. The status of the latter principle is thus elevated to a law of Nature more fundamental than, say, Coulomb's law. In this note we examine this line of reasoning and we propose an approach according to which the Maxwell equations may be viewed as a Backlund transformation relating fields and sources. The conservation of charge and the electromagnetic wave equations then simply express the integrability conditions of this transformation.
