Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:The resolution of conventional optical equipment is always restricted by the diffraction limit, and improving on this was previously considered improbable. Optical super-resolution imaging, which has recently experienced rapid growth and attracted increasing global interest, will result in applications in many domains, benefiting fields such as biology, medicine and material research. This review discusses the contributions of different researchers who identified the diffractive barrier and attempted to realize optical super-resolution. This is followed by a personal viewpoint of the development of optical nanoscopy in recent decades and the road towards the next generation of optical nanoscopy.

Abstract:[Purposes] Optics papers published by Chinese researchers on the SCIE journals in the latest 5 years are investigated.The results will benefit the development of optical research and optical journals in China.[Methods] Optics papers published on journals indexed in SCIE by Chinese researchers between 2011 and 2015 were analyzed based on Web of Science database.[Findings] 37371 optics papers were published on 90 SCIE optical journals by Chinese researchers,which received 161069 citations,as well as 4.31 times per paper.The number of optical papers published on SCIE optical journals by Chinese authors increases gradually.China has frequent cooperation with main developed countries in optical research.Chinese scientists are active and eye-catching in some optical fields.[Contusions] Improving the quality of existed optical journals in China,launching new journals and cultivating young scholars can promote the development of Chinese optical journals.

Abstract:The current text reviewed the situation of the scientific research in the field of Optometry and visual sciences in the recent 5 to 6 years in our country. It showed the advancement and achievement in the myopic fundamental research and the application research of visual science. In addition, it also analyzed the guidance of research in solving the clinical visual issues and the significance of community service of research in eye care in public. This text indicated by the concrete current situation and the result data of research that the biology and optics, the double property of the eye endowed the distinguished feature to the research in Ophthalmology and Optometry, and that the cross cooperation of multidisciplinary promoted the innovation in the fields of Optometry and visual research. In future, the fields of Optometry and visual science in China will face up to more and more anticipations of the original and systematic research. The prophylaxis and treatment of myopia would be still a long-term and rough exploration theme in these fields.

Abstract:The Information Optoelectronic Technology Research Institute (IOTRI) in Tsinghua University brings together research activities and research projects in various optoelectronic devices, integrated photonic devices, optical fiber telecommunication and networks, optical display, optical storage and optical fiber sensing systems. The researches on the optical components for the all optical networks are executed in the area of Fiber Bragg Grating, Wavelength Converters, Tunable filters, Fiber Amplifiers, DFB+EA integrated light source chips and modules, optical nonlinear macromolecule material and its application, Fiber Amplifiers, etc. and the forecast researches on photonic crystal and nanophotonics are also started. Up to now, about 10 research projects on optical component for all optical networks are kept on going in IOTRI with the projects supports by the government through the National High-tech R&D Program ("863" program), the National Fundamental Research and Development Program (“973” Program), the National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), Tsinghua 985 Project, Foundation project of Tsinghua University, and some cooperated projects. All these projects cover the following research areas: Fiber Bragg Grating and its application in DWDM systems such as broadband dispersion and dispersion slope compensation, polymer optical waveguide and its applications, photonic crystal's theoretical analysis and design, wide-band dynamic gain equalized FRA+EDFA hybrid module and related components, wavelength converters and its application in optical networks, tunable PMD compensators, Fiber optical parametric amplification, Gain Coupling in high-speed integrated light sources, etc. Some projects are just carried on, and some of them achieved a lot. About 30 papers in the above areas are posted in the last 3 years.
The Progress of Optic-Mechanics in University of Science and Technology of China

Abstract:Study in the cross-disciplinary fields of infrared imaging, metallurgy and bio-chemical transducers with experimental methods brings new research contents to experimental mechanics, and creates some unique paths for the related fields. This paper gives an overview on recent progresses in the author’s group: 1) proposed a highly sensitive optical readout method for measuring the deformation of a micro-cantilever array (Focus Plane array: FPA), designed and fabricated a series of corresponding FPA; 2) proposed using dynamic speckle metrological methods to study the serrated yield shear bands of alloys, established dynamic strain aging models of mass interaction between solute atoms and dislocations, and reproduced the serrated loading curves and the traces of the shear band repeatedly propagating; 3) proposed using micro-cantilever sensing to study the macro molecular/protein confirmation folding, tested the signal of force interaction between molecules and the folding dynamic process during the confirmation change, which provides a new way to study the folding mechanism of macro molecules.

Abstract:In recent decades, optics, has developed rapidly as an ancient subject. Abstract:The progress of near-field optics research and its application in some Chinese universities and institutions is overviewed. The research activities on the instrumentation aspect of scanning near-field optical microscope, novel sample-tip regulation mechanism, fiber-tip preparations, high resolution imaging and near-field spectroscopy in confined mesoscopic systems, light emission new materials and devices, theoretical development of near-field light-matter interactions, new observations of physical phenomena in the near-field region, optical nanostructuring, are summarized. The current research projects and future prospective of the possible application of SNOM and nearfield fluorescence imaging to biology, such as the in vitro cell nuclear assembly and apoptosis as well as gene recognition and DNA sequencing, and opto-electro devices are discussed.

Abstract:Applied optics course in Zhejiang University is a National Excellent Resource Sharing Course in China, and the online to offline teaching strategies have been implemented and shared with dozens of universities and colleges in China. Discussion is an important activity in teaching. In this paper our main consideration is designing the discussion questions and group works so as to develop the students' critical thinking, cooperative and sharing spirits, and communication abilities in the cosmopolitan era. Typical questions that connect different chapters and help the students to understand the relationship between each sub-system in both field of view and aperture are given for discussion. We inspire the students to complete group works such as ray trace programming by cooperation and then make presentations. All of these create a circumstance for sharing thoughts and developing intelligence and knowledge. A poll shows that the students pay more attention to optical design than before and have made progress in conversation and cooperation.
