Abstract:The powder of Al2O3/Al2(1-0.2)Mg0.2Ti(1+0.2)O5 matrix ceramic composite was in situ synthesized via solid state reaction route at 1400 degrees C by adding excess alpha-Al2O3 with industrial raw materials of alpha-Al2O3, rutile-TiO2 and MgO powder, which achieved well in-situ mixture of the two phase of Al2O3 and Al2(1-0.2)Mg0.2Ti(1+0.2)O5 and the in situ preparation of Al2O3/Al2(1-0.2)Mg0.2Ti(1+0.2)O5 matrix ceramic composite with good properties. The phase composition of the phase composite powder was characterized by XRD, and the effects of the introduced Al2O3 on the microstructure, fracture intensity and thermal expansion of the aluminum titanate matrix ceramic composite were investigated by observing the fracture morphology with FESEM, and measuring the fracture intensity and thermal expansion coefficient. Results show that while the amount of introduced second phase of Al2O3 is 15wt%, the prepared aluminum titanate matrix ceramic composite is not only of high fracture intensity as 108 MPa but also of low thermal expansion coefficient as 0.7 x 10(-6)/degrees C.

Abstract:The Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites have recently attracted considerable interest because of its enhanced mechanical properties. The basic processing routes for Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites were presented in detail and models explaining the improvements in mechanical properties were explored. Powder mixing is the key factor in processing and transgranular fracture and crack pinning are major factors of the improvements in mechanical properties.

Abstract:Al2TiO5-Al2O3 composite ceramics were prepared by one step firing and two steps firing.The effects of sintering process and raw material composition of Al2TiO5-Al2O3 composite ceramics on the performances were studied.The results indicate that the composition and sintering process of the Al2TiO5-A12O3 composite ceramics have an important influence on the performances.The combination properties of the Al2TiO5-Al2O3 composite ceramics those prepared by one step firing are better than those prepared by two steps firing.When the composite ceramics with the composition of 80wt% alumina and 20wt% aluminium titanate are prepared by one step firing,the water absorptivity of the Al2TiO5-Al2O3 composite ceramics is only 0.11%,the open porosity is 0.32%,the bulk density is 3.00 g·cm-3,the bending strength reaches 152.88 MPa,and the thermal-expansion coefficient is 7.5×10-6/℃.

Abstract:Abstract Nanocarbon materials (carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, etc.) are considered the ideal toughening phase of ceramic matrix composites because of their unique structures and excellent properties. The strengthening and toughening effect of nanocarbon is attributed to several factors, such as their dispersibility in the matrix, interfacial bonding state with the matrix, and structural alteration. In this paper, the development state of nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites is reviewed based on the preparation methods and basic properties of nanocarbon-reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The assessment is implemented in terms of the influence of the interface bonding condition on the basic properties of ceramic matrix composites and the methods used to improve the interface bonding. Furthermore, the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites are considered. Moreover, the key problems and perspectives of research work relating to nanocarbon-toughened ceramic matrix composites are highlighted.

Abstract:In the present work, we have reported a novel approach to fabricate carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/alumina nanocomposites with improved fracture toughness using a simple heterogeneous nucleation through the incorporation of functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). For this approach, homogeneous distribution of CNTs in ceramic matrix has been achieved up to 5.7 vol.% CNTs content, revealed by SEM observations of both composite powders and fracture surfaces of sintered specimens. Excellent comprehensive mechanical properties as high as 6.03 +/- 0.45 MPa m(1/2) fracture toughness and 19.18 +/- 0.33 GPa hardness are obtained in alumina nanocomposite with 5.7 vol.% MWCNTs fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) with subsection pressure method, increasing 53% and 30% over that of pure alumina sintered under the same sintering condition, respectively. Furthermore, the fracture mode transition and the activated toughening mechanisms during crack propagation are taken into account to explain the improvement in fracture toughness. Abstract:Ceramic nanocomposites, containing at least one phase in the nanometric dimension, have received special interest in recent years. They have, in fact, demonstrated increased performance, reliability and lifetime with respect to monolithic ceramics. However, a successful approach to the production of tailored composite nanostructures requires the development of innovative concepts at each step of manufacturing, from the synthesis of composite nanopowders, to their processing and sintering.This review aims to deepen understanding of some of the critical issues associated with the manufacturing of nanocomposite ceramics, focusing on alumina-based composite systems. Two case studies are presented and briefly discussed. The former illustrates the benefits, in terms of sintered microstructure and related mechanical properties, resulting from the application of an engineering approach to a laboratory-scale protocol for the elaboration of nanocomposites in the system alumina-ZrO2-YAG (yttrium aluminium garnet). The latter illustrates the manufacturing of alumina-based composites for large-scale applications such as cutting tools, carried out by an injection molding process. The need for an engineering approach to be applied in all processing steps is demonstrated also in this second case study, where a tailored manufacturing process is required to obtain the desired results.
Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of h-BN composite ceramics with Y2O3–AlN addition by liquid-phase sintering

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) composite ceramics were prepared by hot pressing with the addition of Y2O3 and AlN. The effects of different Y2O3–AlN contents on microstructural evolution, mechanical properties and thermal diffusion coefficients of h-BN composite ceramics were investigated. The results indicate that Y2O3–AlN forms a liquid phase during the sintering process, achieving a good wettability with h-BN grains. In pure h-BN ceramic and h-BN composite ceramic with 40 wt% Y2O3–AlN, the h-BN grains grow well when controlled through solid-phase and liquid-phase diffusion, respectively. With the increase in Y2O3–AlN content, mechanical properties and thermal diffusion coefficients of h-BN composite ceramics first decrease and then increase, and the properties of h-BN composite ceramic with 10 wt% Y2O3–AlN are the inflection points. Such properties are highly related to the phase compositions, porosity and microstructure.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:A simple self-assembly method was applied for the successful synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-encapsulated alumina (Al2O3@RGO) nanohybrids with core-shell structures which were then added as nanofiller into a matrix of Al2O3–TiC to fabricate corresponding ceramic composites. Microstructural analysis revealed that RGO sheets were homogeneously dispersed in the matrix and bonded to grains to form a 3D RGO network. The formed unique structure forced RGO sheets to closely bond and strongly attach to matrix grains, effectively increasing load transfer efficiency and contact surface area between matrix and RGO sheets. Analysis of interface characteristics revealed that the interfacial phase Al2OC was generated by a localized carbothermic reduction process. Based on first-principles calculations, Al2OC interfacial phase was found to contribute to the generation of weak and strong hybrid interfaces in composites. The weak and strong hybrid interfaces could not only effectively promote the transfer of loads from the matrix to RGO sheets but also induce conventional toughening mechanisms. In summary, addition of Al2O3@RGO nanohybrids effectively improved the dispersion level of RGO in ceramic as well as interfacial bonding strength between these sheets and matrix, thereby improving overall mechanical characteristics of Al2O3–TiC ceramic composites.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Aluminium (Al) and Al-based alloys known as lightweight, good corrosion resistance, and low-cost materials are found used for a range of engineering applications including those in automobile, aircraft, power systems, marine, defence, and among others. Although, notwithstanding these intrinsic features of Al and its alloys, their wide application is constrained due to certain properties, for example, dendrite separation, intense wear rate over a period, and mechanical degradation under severe impact and harsh environment. Nonetheless, as studies established that nanocomposites depict a promising solution to overcome the limitations of Al, Al-based alloy and their micro composites. The current review aims to discuss the influence of nanoceramic fillers on the mechanical and tribological characteristics of Al and Al alloy-based composites prepared via melting and powder metallurgy routes. With the available literature, the mechanical and wear resistance properties of Al and Al alloys matrix were observed to be improved by different nanoceramic fillers addition. Though, their mechanical behaviour at a certain point undergoes degradation due to particles agglomeration and porosity. Again, issues like brittleness reportedly affect the superior properties' improvement of Al-based nanocomposites. Thus, as particles agglomeration, porosity, and brittleness are the main drawbacks associated with the development and characterization of Al-based nanocomposites, the authors concluded the study with challenges and recommendations for future improvement. Hence, the study will pave the way for future research opportunities and sustainable development of Al nanocomposites.

Abstract:This paper describes a new class of alumina composites based on a novel hybrid microstructure design, in which multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and SiC nanoparticles are combined to give a new type system of ceramic nanocomposites. This design provides mutually redundant mechanisms to enhance the strength and toughness of the alumina matrix without deteriorating its intrinsic properties such as hardness. The hybrid alumina composites with different MWNT contents (0, 5, 7, and 10vol%) and 1vol% of SiC were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The resulting significant improvement in mechanical properties, specially the fracture toughness, is substantiated by direct evidence for toughening mechanisms by MWNTs, observed for the first time in highly disordered MWNT/alumina composites.

Abstract:To meet the commercial application, the mechanical properties of Ti2AlNb-based alloys must be improved. However, the strengthening mechanism of the Ti2AlNb-based composites with Al2O3 particles needs further to investigate. Nano-Al2O3/Ti‐22Al‐25Nb composites are prepared by mechanical alloying (MA), high-energy ball milling (HEBM), and hot pressing (HP). The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of Al2O3 content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. The results show that the grain size decreases, and phase transformation occurs with an increase in the Al2O3 content. With the increase of Al2O3 content from 2 wt.% to 6 wt.%, the microstructure of Ti2AlNb-based composites transformed from the ultrafine acicular O phase to the uniform equiaxed O phase. The hardness and ultimate compressive strength of the Ti2AlNb-based composites first increase and then decrease. The hardness of the composite is up to 8.6 GPa when the Al2O3 content is 6 wt.%, almost twice that of Ti‐22Al‐25Nb alloy. The hardening effect is the result of a higher volume fraction of the O phase and grain refinement with addition of Al2O3 particles. The optimal combination of hardness, ultimate compressive strength, and strain-to-failure of the composite with 2 wt.% Al2O3 is 5.9 GPa, 2190 MPa, and 8.1%, respectively. The strengthening mechanisms of Al2O3 phase dispersion and ultrafine acicular O phase precipitation are proposed and confirmed. This research offers a new idea for the wider application of Ti2AlNb-based composites.

Abstract:Due to excellent chemical stability, high rigidity, superior corrosion and wear resistance, aluminum oxynitride (AlON) has been considered as one of most promising candidate ceramic materials in high-performance structural, advanced abrasives and refractory fields. However, it usually exhibited relatively low flexural strength and poor fracture toughness. The study is aimed to develop silicon carbide (SiC) and zirconium nitride (ZrN) nano-particulate reinforced AlON composites with improved mechanical properties and fracture resistance via a hot-press sintering process. It was found that the addition of ZrO2 nanoparticles would be transformed into ZrN during sintering. Due to the pinning effect of SiC and ZrN nano-particles positioned at grain boundaries of micro-sized AlON particles, the presence of SiC and ZrN nano-particles resulted in the reduction of both porosity and grain size, and a change of fracture mode from intergranular cracking in AlON to intragranular cracking in composites. With presence of 8wt% SiC and 5.2wt% ZrN nano-particles, the relative density, microhardness, Young’s modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness increased. Different toughening mechanisms including crack bridging, crack branching and crack deflection were observed, thus effectively increasing the crack propagation resistance and leading to a considerable improvement in flexural strength and fracture toughness.
Microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC-Al2O3 nanocomposite prepared by surface modified SiC nanopowders

Abstract:SiC nanopowders were surface modified by low temperature plasma polymerization. 5vol% SiC-Al2O3 nanocomposite was prepared by adding the surface modified SiC nanopowders into the matrix of Al 2O3.The influence of surface modified SiC nanopowders on the properties and structure of SiC-Al2O3 nanocomposite was studied. The surface modified SiC-Al2O3 nanocomposite had higher density and nicer mechanical properties than untreated SiC- Al 2O3 nanocomposite because of the improvement of dispersion. The hardness and toughness of the SiC- Al2O3 nanocomposite were higher than monolithic Al2O3 but the ultimate bending strength was not perfect because of retardation of the densification and formation of unsintered pores caused by the induced oxygen during the process of powder treatment.

Abstract:The bending strength, fracture toughness and thermal shockresistance of porous alumina with and without nano-Al2O3 additions was determined. Significant increases in bending strength and fracture toughness were observed for the porous ceramics with nano-Al2O3 additions. The retained strength after thermal fatigue and the sustained number of thermal cycles before general failure of the porous ceramics with nano-Al2O3 additions are higher than that without additions.

Abstract:Hot-pressed Al2O3-Ti3SiC2 Composites were prepared and the mechanical properties have been characterized. The experimental results showed that the Vickers hardness decreased with the increasing in Ti3SiC2 content, and the fracture toughness and strength increased with Ti3SiC2 content. Addition of Ti3SiC2 inhibits the growth of alumina grains though pinning mechanism. Maximum toughness (9.18 +/- 0.22 MPam(1/2)) and maximum strength (680 +/- 10.2MPa) were achieved, which is compared with alumina toughened by other materials.

Abstract:3D-carbon fiber felts reinforced ceramic-based composites are considered as valuable structural materials due to their excellent high-temperature mechanical performance, low density and low thermal conductivity. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of the carbon fiber reinforced silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramics, in-situ growth of SiCnws on the surface of carbon fiber via a simple precursor impregnation and pyrolysis method was proposed. As a result, nanoscale SiC nanowires and microscale carbon fiber felts reinforced SiOC ceramics were successfully fabricated. The results showed that the compressive strength of the composite increased by 369% and 173% after two PIP process in x/y and z directions, respectively. The enhanced compressive strength could be ascribed to the brittle fracture of SiCnws and CFs, and crack deflection.

Abstract:Preparation of SiC–Si3N4 composite refractory materials without sintering entails only low energy consumption and incurs little cost compared with traditional preparation methods. This paper investigated the effect of Al2O3 addition on bulk density, apparent porosity, linear shrinkage and oxidation resistance of as-fabricated non-sintered SiC–Si3N4 composite refractory materials. Meanwhile, the compressive and flexural strengths both before and after heat treatment were analyzed. The mechanisms of oxidation resistance and cryolite resistance of the SiC–Si3N4 composite refractory materials are discussed. Increasing amounts of Al2O3 reduced linear shrinkage but increased oxidation resistance and cryolite resistance. Moreover, compressive and flexural strengths initially increased and then decreased, with maximum values achieved at an Al2O3 addition of 8% w/w.
