Abstract:This paper focuses on a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation process for methanol synthesis to enhance CO2 conversion. The feasibility of a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation process is comprehensively evaluated through a techno-economic analysis. The solvent tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether is identified as one of the most favorable options following an analysis of the solubility data pertaining to various solvents and their influence on the reaction equilibrium of the substances within the system. The influence of process parameters, including temperature, pressure, solvent amount, and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), on the conversion of CO2 and the selectivity for methanol is examined and optimized in a liquid-phase CO2 hydrogenation to methanol process without a gas recycle (Process 1), optimal reaction conditions are determined and a CO2 conversion of 95.19 % and a CH3OH yield of 94.77 % with a purity of 99.9 % are achieved. A liquid-phase process with a gas recycle (Process 2) is implemented to enhance the utilization of feed gas, achieving a CO2 conversion rate of 95.23 % and a methanol yield of 99.69 %. The liquid-phase process is further optimized by incorporating reactive distillation technology (Process 3), to enhance reaction efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Following the techno-economic evaluation, the energy efficiency of Process 3 is 7.79 % and 4.99 % higher than that of Process 1 and Process 2, respectively. The product cost of Process 3 is reduced by 8.75 % compared to Process 1 and by 4.25 % compared to Process 2. This research offers insights into the challenges associated with the development of the liquid-phase method.

Abstract:Traditional industrial methanation of coke oven gas (COG) to produce natural gas generally requires three or more adiabatic reactors, thus resulting in a long process flow, rapid deactivation of catalyst and high investment cost. Herein, a new methanation process of COG (denoted as NCtSNG) over the Ni-Ce/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst was proposed, wherein a tubular heat exchange reactor and an adiabatic reactor were connected in series. The pilot-scale methanation test using a single tubular heat exchange reactor was performed, and the result demonstrated that heat exchange reactor would insure a low temperature of catalyst layer (below 500 degrees C), which can not only improve the efficiency of the exothermic methanation but also prolong the catalyst lifetime. A reliable simulation of the NCtSNG process was then established and validated by using the commercial software Aspen Plus based on the pilot test, and the key operation parameters and conditions were optimized so as to provide significant basic data for future industrial production. It was estimated that the new NCtSNG process presents high energy efficiency of 80%, low production cost of 2.15 CNY/m(3)-SNG, and low CO2 emission of 0.61 kg/m(3)-SNG, thus showing a great superiority in market competition.

Abstract:Considering the technology and economy,the projects of methanol plant,gas turbine combined cycle power plant,gas turbine-HRSG cogeneration plant and gas engine single cycle power plant,all of which usd coke oven gas(COG) as feedstock or fuel,and promised in China.The economic returns of the above four projects is analyzed in the paper,which shows that all the projects can make profits and the Internal Rate of Return(IRR) of methanol plant is the highest.An analysis on sensitivity was conducted and the sensitivity factors were found in order to evaluate the influencing degree in respect of raw material,product price and product output for the economic indexes of each project.

Abstract:Coke-oven gas (COG) is the by-product of coking process and can be used as feedstock in energy and chemical processes. However, the relative advantages and comprehensive competitiveness of various mature and widely-used utilization schemes still need to be investigated, which will be helpful in exploring better ways to use COG. From the perspective of energy supply, this paper investigated the energy consumption, carbon emissions, capital investment and product cost of COG-to-hydrogen (COGtH), COG-to-natural gas (COGtNG), COG-to-methanol (COGtM) and COG-to-power (COGtP) through LCA method, and compared the comprehensive competitiveness using entropy weight method. The results show that COGtP performs better in all aspects, only consumes 2.669 MJ of energy and generates 0.14 kg CO2-eq of carbon emissions when outputting 1 MJ of energy, and product cost is only 1.11E-02 RMB/MJ, making it the most competitive utilization scheme. COGtM consumes the highest 8.525 MJ of energy and generates 0.708 kg CO2-eq of carbon emissions when outputting 1 MJ of energy, and it is superior to COGtNG only in terms of capital investment, making it the least competitive utilization scheme. The comprehensive competitiveness of COGtNG is slightly higher than COGtH, with comprehensive score of 0.49 and 0.46 respectively, and it can be further improved by reducing the equipment investment of methanation, while the performance of COGtH in economic aspect needs to be improved, especially to reduce product cost. Further analysis shows the extent to which the energy consumption and carbon emissions is affected by allocation principle is determined by the proportion of energy consumption and carbon emissions in the coking and upstream coal mining, washing and transportation stages, and under value allocation, the energy consumption and carbon emissions is almost directly linearly proportional to COG price, but non-linearly inversely proportional to coke price. In addition, the value allocation is favorable than mass and energy allocation in view of its reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions of utilization schemes if COG price decreases to 0.38 RMB/Nm3 and 0.47 RMB/Nm3 respectively, or coke price increases to 1122 RMB/t and 899 RMB/t respectively.

Abstract:Producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from coke oven gas (COG) is a promising option to partly alleviate the shortage of natural gas supply and effectively utilize the byproduct of coking production in China. In order to systematically evaluate the energy consumption and environmental impact of COG-based LNG process, the life cycle assessment (LCA) method was introduced in this study. Two synthesized approaches were considered and compared, namely decarbonization process and methanation process. Besides, whether with or without H2 extraction in methanation process is also discussed. Inventory data are obtained from onsite investigations of representative enterprises in China. The results indicate that, LNG production stage is the dominated unit in the overall environmental impacts of decarbonization process, next is LNG evaporation stage, while coking stage only contributes 2.38%. The reason is that COG is only responsible for less upstream environmental burdens as a byproduct. In LNG production stage, medium pressure steam, COG and electricity are the key substances. Comparative LCA shows that methanation process shows better environmental performance than decarbonization process in COG-based LNG production since more LNG product are produced. It is suggested that methanation process with H2 extraction is more desirable considering economic performance. This work intends to provide useful insights on the sustainability development of COG utilization in coking industry.

Abstract:China is the largest coke producer and consumer. There is a pressing need to address the high emissions of air pollutants and carbon dioxide associated with traditional coking production. As the nation pursues a transition towards carbon neutrality, expanding supply chains for coking plants to produce hydrogen, methanol, and other green alternatives has garnered significant attention. However, the relative advantages of these strategies have remained uncertain. In this study, we integrate a life cycle assessment-economic analysis-scenario analysis model to evaluate various coke oven gas (COG) utilization routes (COGtM: COG-to-methanol, COGtLNG: COG-to-liquefied natural gas, COGtSA: COG-to-synthetic ammonia, and COGtH: COG-to-hydrogen). The results indicate that COGtSA emerges as the preferred option for balancing environmental and economic benefits. Meanwhile, COGtM demonstrates economic viability but is associated with higher environmental impacts. Despite being recognized as a significant strategic direction under carbon neutrality initiatives, COGtH faces economic feasibility and risk resilience limitations. COGtLNG encounters both financial and environmental challenges, necessitating strategic development from an energy security perspective. The projected coking capacity is anticipated to experience a slight increase in the mid-term yet a significant decline in the long term, influenced by steel production capacity. In potential future markets, COGtM is estimated to potentially capture a maximum market share of 16–34 % in the methanol market. Furthermore, against the backdrop of continuously expanding potential demand for hydrogen, COGtH holds advantages as a transitional solution, but in the long run, it can only meet a small portion of the market. COGtSA can meet 7–14 % of market demand and emerges as the most viable pathway from the viewpoint of balancing environmental and economic aspects and covering future markets.

Abstract:Based on GE gasification technology, this paper firstly gives a brief introduction to the features of coal water slurry gasification and oil gasification and their domestic application performance, and then makes a comparative analysis from the aspects of process flow, process configuration, main technical parameters, economic and others to elaborate the difference and advantage between coal gasification and oil gasification.This analysis provides the basis for the selection of raw materials and process configuration of gasification for the owners.The research shows that, compared to GE coal water slurry gasification, GE oil gasification has many advantage : the simpler process of feed storage and transportation system, the slag handing system and black water flash system, the longer service life of refractory brick, the longer continuous operation period of the gasifier, lower specific coal and oxygen consumption, higher effective gas content in raw gas, higher ratio of hydrogen to carbon, lower utility consumption, lower fixed asset investment.Besides, the unit production cost of coal water slurry gasification is more sensitive to the price of raw materials.
Concept design, technical performance, and GHG emissions analysis of petroleum coke direct chemical looping hydrogen highly integrated with gasification for methanol production process

Abstract:Petroleum coke gasification for methanol production process has excellent application prospects for the clean utilization of high‐sulfur coke while limiting pollutant emissions from coke combustion. However, the process still suffers from high-energy use and a large CO2 generation caused by composition adjustment. This study proposes a novel petroleum coke chemical looping hydrogen-assisted gasification process for methanol production. Mass-energy coupling is realized by replacing the water gas shift unit with the chemical looping hydrogen unit, and the high temperature gasified gas heats the fuel reactor and in turn the feedstock. Two chemical looping hydrogen scenarios with an operating pressure of 3.0 and 0.1 MPa are considered. The methanol exergy can be increased from 484 to 1030 and 1028 MW by doubling the petroleum coke consumption through the chemical looping integration. The exergy efficiency of the new process is correspondingly increased from 51.6 to 57.1 and 55.2 % with 63.02 and 63.71 % reductions in direct CO2 emissions, as compared to the only gasification route. The calculated life cycle energy consumption and greenhouse gases emissions of the new processes are 40.02/43.84 GJ/t and 693/1055 kg CO2 eq/t, 15.14/7.05 % and 49.09/22.45 % lower than that of the benchmark process. The integration of high-pressure chemical looping technology can introduce significant technical and environmental benefits for methanol production from the petroleum coke.

Abstract:To improve the utilization of byproduct gases in the steel plant, the coke oven gas (COG) methanation combined with blast furnace gas (BFG) and basic oxygen furnace gas (BOFG) was proposed in viewpoint of economy and environment. The optimization mathematics model based on Gibbs free energy minimization was established to predict the thermodynamic feasibility of the proposed methanation. To solve the proposed model, the convenient method was implemented by using the Gibbs module in Aspen Plus software. Effects of operation parameters on the methanation performance were revealed to identify the optimized conditions. To reduce the solid carbon concentration, it was found that the optimized conditions of temperature, pressure and stoichiometric number were 650 °C, 30 bar and 3.0, respectively. Moreover, it was discovered that 10 mol% of BFG or BOFG could be mixed into COG to obtain the maximum methane yield. In addition, it was testified that there were the good agreements between calculated results and industrial and published data, which indicated that the proposed methanation was thermodynamically feasible. Therefore, the simple and easy method was developed to evaluate the methanation operating conditions from the aspect of thermodynamic equilibrium, which provided the basic process conditions of byproduct gases methanation to enhance the steel plant efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Abstract:This study aims to develop an economically viable novel process with high thermodynamic efficiency for the co-generation of methanol and electricity from coke oven gas (COG) and blast furnace gas (BFG). For this purpose, two processes are proposed to utilize COG and BFG. In process A, syngas is obtained from COG reforming, and BFG, after providing the required heat for the reformer, is injected into the methanol synthesis reactor as a rich carbon source. In process B, in addition to the above-mentioned, additional hydrogen is injected into the methanol reactor to enhance carbon dioxide conversion. The performance of the proposed systems is evaluated using energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, net CO2 emission, and total production cost. Results show that energy efficiencies for processes A and B are 53.53% and 72.8%, and their exergy efficiencies are 23% and 26%, respectively. Moreover, environmental analysis demonstrates that process B has a net CO2 emission of −1.82 kgCO2/kgmethanol, while for process A, this parameter is relatively higher, and it is positive. From the economic viewpoint, it is concluded that process B is more feasible, and the total production cost of methanol decreases by 87.62% compared to process A. Also, it can be deduced that in the case of utilizing additional hydrogen electricity and methanol production from COG and BFG is interesting from the thermodynamic and economic point of view, and due to negative net CO2 emission, it is environmentally desirable, too.

Abstract:This work compares 9 process routes that produce methanol from carbon dioxide using new and established thermochemical and electrochemical technologies. Net CO2 conversion is compared, and process efficiencies are benchmarked using side-by-side process models. New process routes using recently reported catalysts that enable methane pyrolysis (PY), and the dry reforming of methane (DMR) are modeled. Comparison is made with direct CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, the co-electrolysis of water and CO2 using solid oxide electrochemistry, and combinations of process technologies. Both electric heating and fuel switching to hydrogen are considered. Autothermal reforming of methane (ATR) is modeled as the conventional technology for reference. A new thermochemical approach in which CO2 reforming and methane pyrolysis reactions occur in separate reactors, with excess hydrogen produced and combusted for heat, (PY/DMR) was found to have the lowest levelized costs of CO2 mitigation varying from $50.4–53.9/t-CO2 using different electricity carbon intensities and levelized cost of methanol of $295.6/t. Methane pyrolysis offers the most flexible process solutions: it is nearly cost-competitive with reforming today ($295.6/t vs $277.3/t) using fuel switching and would emerge as the most economically viable process ($99.5/t) in future scenarios with very low electricity and natural gas costs and very high emissions penalties starting from 2030. Based on the emission factors from both electricity and natural gas across 195 countries around the world, 53 countries would result in net conversion of CO2 via pyrolysis today after heating, fugitive emissions, and energy use are taken into account.

Abstract:Coke oven gas (COG) is a byproduct of coking plants in steel mills which can be methanized resulting in a hydrogen-methane mixture with a volumetric fraction of roughly 55% hydrogen (roughly 13.25% by mass) and 45% methane (roughly 86.75% by mass). In order to simulate the use of coke oven gas as a fuel for engines, this study focuses on hydrogen enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) at a hydrogen volumetric fraction of 55%, which is the same content as the methanized COG. The power, efficiency and emissions characteristics are outlined at different load conditions which will be provided for the next step electronic control, performance optimization and product development research. This potential alternative fuel has the potential not only to reduce engine emissions, but will also help reduce the waste COG produced in large quantities by factories across the world. Abstract:Firstly, the data of several representative pollutants emissions in life cycle of coke oven gas (COG) production are obtained in the thesis. The results can supply environmental assessment of the different utilization system of COG. Secondly, the data of several representative pollutants emissions in life cycle of two utilization systems of COG which have good development outlook and economic advantage in all utilization systems of COG-methanol synthesis system based on catalytic partial oxidation and gas turbine combined cycle are obtained. Finally, environmental impacts —global warming,acidification and photochemical smog potential of two utilization systems are compared, then dominant influencing on environment factors of each system are pointed out. Therefore, the results could be used as quantitative references for emission mitigation.

Abstract:Based on the technical parameters of a coal gas project,the simplified model of 3 methanation processes was set up through the simulation by Aspen Plus.Under the same methanation process of feed gas and the same initial conditions, 3 types of process were optimized,such as feed gas distribution ratio and recycling gas volume.Besides,the reaction heat load of the specified temperature period was calculated.The differences of 3 types of coal-to-SNG methanation technologies were analyzed and discussed in terms of temperature control,heat utilization,recycled gas compressor energy consumption and reactor size.The analysis results showed that the product of 3 types of processes could meet the requirements of coal-to-SNG standard respectively,and the by-produced specified high-grade steam was made at the same level. The third model had a certain advantage in the recycled gas compressor energy consumption,temperature control and reactor processing.
Conceptual Design and Techno-economic Analysis of a Coal to Methanol and Ethylene Glycol Cogeneration Process with Low Carbon Emission and High Efficiency

Abstract:Coal gasification and coking to methanol (GCtM) is a newly developed and industrialized process in China. However, in the early stages, the idea of integration hardly applied to this process. To improve the degree of integration, this paper developed a coupling process of coproducing methanol and ethylene glycol. The key idea was to find an appropriate distribution of carbon and hydrogen components for maximal resource utilization. The new process introduced additional hydrogen and carbon sinks by adding a new ethylene glycol synthesis unit. It separated excessive H2 or CO from different syngas streams depending on their composition. This brought more hydrogen and carbon sources. The new process conducted integration by matching sinks and sources. A detailed process modeling and simulation were conducted in Aspen Plus. The simulation results were verified with reference and industrial data. The techno-economic performance was analyzed and compared with the conventional process to find the advantages of the new process. The results showed that the new process had a much higher carbon utilization efficiency of 54% than that of the GCtM process, 40%. The total greenhouse gas emissions of the new process are 1.58 t CO2 equiv t–1, which is 26.2% lower than that of the GCtM. It was also found that the exergy efficiency was improved from 56.7% to 68.1%. As for economic benefits, the new process decreased total product cost by 35.2% and increased internal rate of return by 4.5%.

Abstract:China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals present a significant challenge for coal chemical technology, which is critical to securing the energy structure. Combining coal chemical industry technology with new energy is an effective approach to transform the development of the coal chemical industry. This paper proposes and studies a novel coal-to-methanol (CTM) technology of gasification integrated solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC). SOEC electrolytic hydrogen production technology is an advanced electrolytic water technology with the advantages of large scale and high efficiency, which is very suitable to be combined with industrial technology and can solve the painful problem of H 2 deficiency in the conventional coal to methanol process. In this study, from mechanistic analysis and model simulations, it is observed that by increasing the SOEC capacity, the novel CTM system can create more methanol at the same coal consumption and simultaneously reduce CO 2 emissions. The novel CTM system can produce up to 2.2 times more methanol and reduce CO 2 emissions by 94% by replacing the water-gas-shift (WGS) process with the SOEC unit. The novel CTM increases energy consumption. In addition, the novel CTM technology will effectively improve the economics of coal to methanol, taking into account the carbon tax. At the methanol price of 2900 RMB/t and SOEC capacity of 250 MW, the economic benefits of novel CTM were 2.1 times greater than CTM technology.

Abstract:In this paper, a methanol production process with high thermodynamic efficiency and a low production cost is presented. The proposed process is based on steam methane reforming, in which carbon dioxide (CO2) captured from a power plant flue gas is employed to improve the stoichiometric number, methanol efficiency, and carbon efficiency and increase CO2 conversion. In addition to the sensitivity analysis, comprehensive technical, economic, and environmental analyses are performed. Furthermore, the obtained results of this paper are compared to those of previous studies. A parametric study showed that the optimum steam-to-methane ratio is 3.75, and the optimum flow rate for CO2 utilization is 140 kmol/h. From the economic point of view, it is demonstrated that the total annual cost is 11,799,484 USD, and the total production cost rate is 0.1 $/kg. The environmental analysis showed that the total net CO2 emission in this process is 6580.64 kg/h, and for producing 1 kg of methanol, 0.41 kg of CO2 is emitted.

Life-cycle Analysis of Methanol Production from Coke Oven Gas in China

Abstract:The growing demand for transportation fuels and the global emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have led to increased interest in analyzing transport GHG emissions from the life-cycle perspective. Methanol, a potentially carbon-neutral fuel synthesized from CO2 and H2, has emerged as a promising candidate. This paper conducts a comprehensive life-cycle analysis (LCA) of the GHG emissions associated with the methanol production process, utilizing data inventory from China in 2019. To simulate the synthesis and distillation process of methanol, Aspen Plus is employed, using parameters obtained from actual plants. GHG emissions are then calculated using the GREET model, incorporating updated industry statistics and research findings. The CO2 necessary for methanol production is captured from factory flue gas. Two different sources of H2 are considered: one from Coke Oven Gas (COG) and the hydrogen-rich gas byproduct resulting from COG methanation (Case 1), and the other via water electrolysis (Case 2). The GHG emissions of methanol production for Case 1 and Case 2 are found to be -0.08 and 6.36 kg CO2-eq/kg methanol, respectively. However, if wind power is the sole source of electricity, the GHG emissions for both cases are reduced to -0.68 and -0.65 kg CO2-eq/kg methanol, respectively. The adoption of CO2 capture technology is the main reason for both systems to achieve negative emissions. The lower GHG emissions in Case 1 are attributed to the energy and emission allocation of byproducts. To achieve net zero GHG emissions in Case 2, the GHG emissions of electricity generation need to be reduced by 88% of the current level. This reduction is expected to be achieved by 2050, based on projected power generation mixes and efficiency improvements in water electrolysis in China.

Abstract:Efficient utilization of CO2 to produce clean liquid fuels and various petrochemicals has attracted significant attention during the past decades. This review mainly focuses on our efforts and main achievements during the development of a CO2-utilizing Gas-to-Methanol (CGTM) process, which is composed of CO2/steam-mixed reforming and methanol synthesis via CO2 and CO hydrogenation. Experimental apparatus at different scales, ranging from lab to demonstration, have been established to pursue an efficient CGTM process with enhanced energy efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. The proposed CGTM process employs a proprietary coke-resistant Ni-based catalyst in the reforming section, which is very stable under a 1000-h accelerated stability test. Based on the results of the process simulation and optimization obtained by using Aspen Plus, a CGTM demonstration plant with a methanol-production capacity of 10 t/day is designed and constructed, which comprises a reforming section (co-feeding CO2 into the reformer), a methanol synthesis section, and a recycling section. During the continuous operation for 1000 h, the CGTM demonstration plant exhibited a satisfactory performance, which is in good agreement with the design values. The overall thermal efficiency is shown to be superior to that of the conventional Gas-to-Methanol (GTM) processes, and the CGTM process is economically feasible given that the NG price, methanol price, and the plant scale are located in the following range of 1–5 $/MMBTU, 350–500 $/Mt, and 2500–5000 TPD, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed CGTM process would be even more competitive in the case of a higher carbon tax.
