Abstract:Recently, various efforts have been put forward on the development of technologies for the synthesis of methane from CO2 and H2, since it can offer a solution for renewable H2 storage and transportation. In parallel, this reaction is considered to be a critical step in reclaiming oxygen within a closed cycle. Over the years, extensive fundamental research works on CO2 methanation have been investigated and reported in the literatures. In this updated review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent publications during the last 3 years. Various aspects on this reaction system are described in detail, such as thermodynamic considerations, catalyst innovations, the influence of reaction conditions, overall catalytic performance, and reaction mechanism. Finally, the future development of CO2 methanation is discussed.

Abstract:Methanol synthesis plays an important role in the utilization of coke-oven gas.The H/C ratio of the syngas prepared from coke-oven gas by purification and reforming is too high,so hydrogen couldn't be fully used.The decarbonization gas prepared by shift reaction and decarbonization of coal gas has low H/C ratio.Therefore,the H/C ratio could become appropriate for methanol synthesis when the two kinds of gases are mixed by regulating and optimizing the ratio of two feed gases.Methanol synthesis exhaust gas is rich in hydrogen which could be effectively recovered and utilized by the technology of membrane separation or pressure swing adsorption.
A Review on High-Value Development and Utilization of Unconventional Methane-Containing Gaseous Fuel Resources

Abstract:Due to long term extraction and use, conventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources are decreasing gradually. Therefore, the development and utilization of unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources are extremely important. This article mainly summarizes the current reserves, high-value development and utilization technologies of unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources, such as shale gas, coalbed methane, and coke oven gas, etc. Researchers have found that currently only high concentration coalbed methane and coke oven gas are widely used in power generation as fuel, while other unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources are still in the research stage due to their complex compositions or complicated application systems. Although partial oxidation and steam reforming technologies are widely used in the production of syngas from methane-containing gaseous fuel resources, the development for further synthesis of chemical products are relatively slow. Polygeneration processes of these unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources involve a wide range of technologies, and the subsystems may not be mature yet, which limit their developments. However, the “stationary gas power plant” can achieve on-site conversion of shale gas into electricity, while low concentration coalbed methane can be used for power generation through solid oxide fuel cells. Chemical looping reforming of unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel to produce syngas is expected to achieve high CH4 conversion rate and maximum CO2 utilization rate. By studying the high-value development and utilization technologies of unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources, the current pressure on conventional gaseous fuel resources can be alleviated, and multi-level energy utilization can be achieved, which is helpful for providing references for the current and future development of the unconventional methane-containing gaseous fuel resources industries.

Abstract:Considering the technology and economy,the projects of methanol plant,gas turbine combined cycle power plant,gas turbine-HRSG cogeneration plant and gas engine single cycle power plant,all of which usd coke oven gas(COG) as feedstock or fuel,and promised in China.The economic returns of the above four projects is analyzed in the paper,which shows that all the projects can make profits and the Internal Rate of Return(IRR) of methanol plant is the highest.An analysis on sensitivity was conducted and the sensitivity factors were found in order to evaluate the influencing degree in respect of raw material,product price and product output for the economic indexes of each project.

Abstract:Firstly, the data of several representative pollutants emissions in life cycle of coke oven gas (COG) production are obtained in the thesis. The results can supply environmental assessment of the different utilization system of COG. Secondly, the data of several representative pollutants emissions in life cycle of two utilization systems of COG which have good development outlook and economic advantage in all utilization systems of COG-methanol synthesis system based on catalytic partial oxidation and gas turbine combined cycle are obtained. Finally, environmental impacts —global warming,acidification and photochemical smog potential of two utilization systems are compared, then dominant influencing on environment factors of each system are pointed out. Therefore, the results could be used as quantitative references for emission mitigation.

Abstract:Large scale utilization of carbon dioxide is an important way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon dioxide methanation technology is expected to be an effective way for reducing CO2 emission, assimilating the surplus power from the new energy of wind, sun, etc., and increasing the supply of clean energy. Aimed at utilizing the high purity, large volume carbon dioxide captured from industrial production, referencing to the experiences of the methanation technology of coal to natural gas, a novel segmental CO2 methanation process was proposed, which uses the raw material gas itself and a part of the product gas as the temperature control medium to achieve the gradual release of high intensive heat and the cascade utilization of heat.

Abstract:China is the largest coke producer and consumer. There is a pressing need to address the high emissions of air pollutants and carbon dioxide associated with traditional coking production. As the nation pursues a transition towards carbon neutrality, expanding supply chains for coking plants to produce hydrogen, methanol, and other green alternatives has garnered significant attention. However, the relative advantages of these strategies have remained uncertain. In this study, we integrate a life cycle assessment-economic analysis-scenario analysis model to evaluate various coke oven gas (COG) utilization routes (COGtM: COG-to-methanol, COGtLNG: COG-to-liquefied natural gas, COGtSA: COG-to-synthetic ammonia, and COGtH: COG-to-hydrogen). The results indicate that COGtSA emerges as the preferred option for balancing environmental and economic benefits. Meanwhile, COGtM demonstrates economic viability but is associated with higher environmental impacts. Despite being recognized as a significant strategic direction under carbon neutrality initiatives, COGtH faces economic feasibility and risk resilience limitations. COGtLNG encounters both financial and environmental challenges, necessitating strategic development from an energy security perspective. The projected coking capacity is anticipated to experience a slight increase in the mid-term yet a significant decline in the long term, influenced by steel production capacity. In potential future markets, COGtM is estimated to potentially capture a maximum market share of 16–34 % in the methanol market. Furthermore, against the backdrop of continuously expanding potential demand for hydrogen, COGtH holds advantages as a transitional solution, but in the long run, it can only meet a small portion of the market. COGtSA can meet 7–14 % of market demand and emerges as the most viable pathway from the viewpoint of balancing environmental and economic aspects and covering future markets.

Abstract:Coke oven gas (COG) is a byproduct of coking plants in steel mills which can be methanized resulting in a hydrogen-methane mixture with a volumetric fraction of roughly 55% hydrogen (roughly 13.25% by mass) and 45% methane (roughly 86.75% by mass). In order to simulate the use of coke oven gas as a fuel for engines, this study focuses on hydrogen enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG) at a hydrogen volumetric fraction of 55%, which is the same content as the methanized COG. The power, efficiency and emissions characteristics are outlined at different load conditions which will be provided for the next step electronic control, performance optimization and product development research. This potential alternative fuel has the potential not only to reduce engine emissions, but will also help reduce the waste COG produced in large quantities by factories across the world. Abstract:Effective use of CO2from industrial by-products and the fuel burning can improve the utilization of industry resource and reduce emissions. As a renewable resource, CO2can be made high value-added products with catalytic technology. CO2methanation is a unique and promising technology. Research progress on CO2methanation comprehensively including the mainstream catalyst,the reaction mechanism and the reactor innovation was discussed. The nature of catalyst activity cites was focused on as well as the effect of accelerant and carrier. Two types of major reaction mechanisms were analyzed. The work mentioned above was in order to benefit the further research of CO2methanation.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide is one of the important ways to achieve the goal of carbon neutralization, which can be further divided into electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis, and photocatalysis. Although photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have the advantages of mild reaction conditions and low energy consumption, the thermal catalytic conversion of CO 2 has larger processing capacity, better reduction effect, and more complete industrial foundation, which is a promising technology in the future. During the development of new technology from laboratory to industrial application, ensuring the safety of production process is essential. In this work, safety optimization design of equipment, safety performance of catalysts, accident types, and their countermeasures in the industrial applications of CO 2 to methanol are reviewed and discussed in depth. Based on that, future research demands for industrial process safety of CO 2 to methanol were proposed, which provide guidance for the large-scale application of CO 2 thermal catalytic conversion technology.

Abstract:Proper utilization of natural gas is an effective way for the sustainable development of social economy and ecology. The urgent strategic task is to control the concentration of carbon dioxide in atmosphere. The main technology for natural gas utilization is the use of natural gas as coal substitute in power generation and as alternative fuel to gasoline and diesel. Other key techniques for natural gas utilization include the production of fuel cell fuel by natural gas and methanol reforming for transportation use, development of an integrated utilization system of natural gas and coal, and implementation of synergetic projects for comprehensive energy utilization.

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for synthesizing natural gas from calcium carbide tail gas and coke oven gas, and aims to solve the problem of environment pollution and useful resource waste caused by discharge of calcium carbide tail gas and coke oven gas in a production process. The calcium carbide tail gas is condensed and dedusted, and the coke oven gas is subjected to cooling, detarring and naphthalene removal; then, two gases are mixed, methane gas is synthesized through sulfur tolerant shift, decarburization and desulfuration, and is subjected to two-time dewatering and pressure swing adsorption, finally, the natural gas is synthesized, and is for civil use and industrial use through industrialized condensing storage. The method can reduce pollution, the environment is protected, the two waste gases are utilized, the method is advanced in process, the step is reasonable, the used auxiliary material is safe, stable and reliable, the synthesized natural gas purity is good, and the national standard of the same gas is achieved; and the natural gas can be used for multiple industry fields, and the method is ideal.

R&D of a new technology of conversion of coke oven gas from bituminous coal into syngas

Abstract:A kind of new technology with an integrated apparatus (IA) for producing syngas from bituminous coal is developed. In the integrated apparatus three processes: coal pyrolysis, partial coal gasification and conversion of coke oven gas (COG) into syngas are completed and three products: syngas, ferro-alloy coke (semi-coke) and tar are produced in an environmental friendly manner. In this paper, the status of China's semi-coke industry and coke oven gas utilization are introduced; the principle of conversing CH4-rich gas such as COG into syngas with the assistance of H2O-O2 in a high temperature carbon catalytic system are analyzed; and other technological issues, such as the process, main technical specifications of the integrated apparatus, product quality, energy consumption, financial estimation, and environmental protection etc. are discussed. It has been shown by research that the main technical specifications of the integrated apparatus are as following: coal processing capability 23 T/d, coke yield 14.7 T/d, tar yield 1.15 T/d, syngas yield 11960 Nm3/d. The syngas quality shows CH4 content <1.0% and (H2 + CO) content > 86.5%. The semi-coke is favored product used for Si-Fe alloy and carbide production. Its volatile rate is lower than 4.00% and electrical resistance is higher than 1506Ω.mm 2. m-1 at 1300°C. The content of phenol in the tar is 16.25%. The integrated apparatus, a clean technology is energy and resource efficient.

Abstract:The overuse of fossil fuels has created a dual challenge for humanity, namely energy and environmental concerns. Excessive carbon emissions have resulted in a range of global climate issues. It's of great practical significance to capture the excessive carbon dioxide emissions and convert them into high value-added chemicals or fuels. Methane is an important carrier for chemical bond energy storage due to its high mass calorific value. Carbon dioxide methanation is a promising process for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This review introduces recent research progress on carbon dioxide methanation using thermal catalytic, bioconversion, photocatalytic, and electrocatalytic technologies. A dual-function integrated design integrating carbon dioxide capture and methanation is proposed, which not only realizes on-site capture and utilization, but also improves the manufacturability and economic benefits of the entire process.

Abstract:Traditional industrial methanation of coke oven gas (COG) to produce natural gas generally requires three or more adiabatic reactors, thus resulting in a long process flow, rapid deactivation of catalyst and high investment cost. Herein, a new methanation process of COG (denoted as NCtSNG) over the Ni-Ce/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst was proposed, wherein a tubular heat exchange reactor and an adiabatic reactor were connected in series. The pilot-scale methanation test using a single tubular heat exchange reactor was performed, and the result demonstrated that heat exchange reactor would insure a low temperature of catalyst layer (below 500 degrees C), which can not only improve the efficiency of the exothermic methanation but also prolong the catalyst lifetime. A reliable simulation of the NCtSNG process was then established and validated by using the commercial software Aspen Plus based on the pilot test, and the key operation parameters and conditions were optimized so as to provide significant basic data for future industrial production. It was estimated that the new NCtSNG process presents high energy efficiency of 80%, low production cost of 2.15 CNY/m(3)-SNG, and low CO2 emission of 0.61 kg/m(3)-SNG, thus showing a great superiority in market competition.

Abstract:The dry (CO2) reforming of methane is a great promising technology, particularly because of its dual advantages of natural gas valorization and mitigating global warming via carbon dioxide sequestration. However, coke management is the most difficult problem in commercialization of the process. We have therefore examined in this paper the various catalytic systems being evaluated for the dry reforming with emphasis on operating parameters, activity, and coke deposition. Other factors such as the catalyst promoter, the reactor system, and the periodical regeneration were also critically reviewed. The benefits of utilizing methane from natural gas and other sources, where carbon dioxide is considered as an impurity component, are emphasized. Structured basic catalysts, with periodic regeneration certainties, are strong candidates for industrial applications. Therefore, efforts to build commercial scales for the benefit of global energy industries were highlighted. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
