Abstract:A Au colloid was prepared in a 5 mM HAuCl_4 solution through irradiation with a focused infrared femtosecond laser at 800 nm. The Au colloid was characterized by absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction analysis. The appearance of absorption peak around 526 nm in the absorption spectra and the wine-red color of sample solution HAuCl_4 under focused laser irradiation verified the formation of Au colloid. The solution color changed in the order of yellow → orange → wine-red due to the local formation of Au nanoparticles near the focus. The pulse energy, focus position of laser beam, and solvent composite play important roles in formation, grain size, and stability of the Au colloid. A mechanism for the precipitate of Au nanoparticles was proposed, and a multiphoton process of femtosecond laser was involved.

Abstract:Colloidal Au less than 20nm was prepared in an aqueous solution of HAuCl4 by irradiation with a near-infrared femtosecond laser. The absorption peak around 526nm in the absorption spectra and the peaks 2theta = 38.3degrees and 2theta = 24degrees in the x-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern indicated the formation of Au colloid. Nonlinear optical properties of Au colloid were investigated by using the Z-scan technique with 8ns pulses at 532nm. The transition characteristics from self-defocusing to self-focusing and from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) were observed for the Au colloid.

Abstract:A new method of synthesis Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure with ultraviolet (UV) excimer laser was studied. It was found Ag/Au core/shell nanostructures with spherical shell could be prepared by UV excimer laser which is obviously confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The surface plasma resonance of this nanostructure can be tuned by controlling thickness of the Au shell. Simulation based on Mie theory was in agreement with the result of the experiments. Moreover, it is indicated the Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure has excellent activity in surface-enhanced Raman scattering. This Ag/Au core/shell nanostructure may be applied to high sensitive trace detection in the future. (C) 2014 Laser Institute of America.

Abstract:Shape transformation of silver nanoprisms in aqueous solution was studied using femtosecond laser pulses. Irradiation of a pulsed Ti:Sapphire laser at 800 nm caused the shape change of the nanoprisms from triangle into sphere, forming a stable colloid of a narrow size distribution with the particle diameters having similar to10 nm. The effects of laser fluence on fragmentation and conversion were investigated using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron nucroscopy. The mechanism of laser-induced colloid formation is discussed.Absorption spectra of the silver nanoprisms after exposure to 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses for various time lengths.
Ordered Au Nanocrystals on a Substrate Formed by Light-Induced Rapid Annealing.

Abstract:Light-induced rapid annealing (LIRA) is a widely used method to modify the morphology and crystallinity of noble metal nanoparticles, and the nanoparticles generally evolve into nanospheres. It is rather challenging to form faceted Au nanocrystals on a substrate using LIRA. Here the formation of spatially ordered Au nanocrystals using a continuous wave infrared laser is reported, assisted by a metamaterial perfect absorber. Faceted Au nanocrystals in truncated-octahedral or multi-twinned geometries can be obtained. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the Au nanoparticles during laser annealing is also revealed, where the crystal grain growth and the surface melting are shown to play key roles in nanocrystal formation. The evolution of morphology also gives the freedom of tuning the absorption spectrum of the metamaterial absorber. These findings provide a novel way for tailoring the morphology and crystallinity of metallic nanoparticles and may pave the way to fabricate refined nano-devices in many potential applications for optics, electronics, catalysis, surface-chemistry and biology.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles were prepared by a focused femtosecond laser irradiation in a 5mM AgNO3 solution in the presence of TiO2 sol. TEM analysis revealed that the size of silver nanoparticles was less than 20nm. A mechanism for the precipitation of silver nanoparticles was proposed. Nonlinear absorptions and optical limiting properties of silver nanoparticles contained solution were also measured. It is observed that the composite material showed strong self-focused effect and significant optical limiting property.

Abstract:We investigate the femtosecond laser filamentation in nanoparticle colloidal solutions. Colloidal solutions of water doped with gold (Au), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanospheres under different sizes and concentrations were experimentally studied. A cyan–red light path was visualized, and the generated supercontinuum spectra spanning from 400 nm to 950 nm were obtained. It was found that the energy losses and frequency-dependent scattering are necessary prerequisites for generating a colorful light path.

Abstract:The interactions between femtosecond (fs) laser pulses and a thin Au film deposited on a silica glass substrate were systematically investigated based on experimental data. Different structures, including microholes, nanoholes, and nanobumps, are obtained when pulses with different energies are incident on the surface of a gold film. The experimental results are discussed according to specific experimental parameters. Two physical models were constructed in order to explain the experimental results. The formation of nanoholes in a silica substrate is attributed to etching by higher order harmonic generations (HHG) when the femtosecond laser pulse interacts with the generated plasma layer, while the formation of nanobumps on the surface of an Au film is attributed to the elastic and plastic characteristics of the metal film under laser pulse irradiation.

Abstract:Several nanostructures were obtained after irradiation with femtosecond laser pulse (130fs, 800nm, 1kHz pulse repetition frequency) on Au/Cr film stack. The influence of laser parameters such as fluence (0.5J/cm2, 1.5J/cm2, 3J/cm2) and the number of pulse were investigated. With single pulse irradiation, the nanoline and nonoparticle were obtained for the pulse fluence of 0.5J/cm2 and 3J/cm2, respectively. The formation mechanism of those nanostructures was discussed. The results of this experiment demonstrate that different kinds of nanostructures could be formed by varying the laser parameters such as fluence and the number of pulse.

Abstract:Abstract Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have a wide range of applications because of their localized surface plasmon resonance properties. Femtosecond laser is considered to be an effective method for preparing Au NPs because of its characteristics of ultrashort irradiation periods and ultrahigh intensities. In this study, a novel method is proposed to produce an Au NP-attached substrate using the spatially and temporally shaped femtosecond laser. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are designed to obtain the localized optical field enhancement, which leads to the femtosecond laser spatially reshaping, enabling the deposition of Au NPs by photoreduction on silicon substrates. The Au NPs prepared by this method exhibit morphological controllability and chemical stability, especially excellent spatial selectivity and uniformity, resulting in the tunable and stable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. Also, the temporally shaped femtosecond pulses are introduced to further increase the enhancement factors of the SERS. This method successfully achieves the controllable morphology synthesis and selective deposition of Au NPs on the substrate simultaneously, which provides a promising candidate for SERS substrates fabrication, and holds potential applications in optoelectronics, such as molecular detection and biosensors.

Ultrafast Laser-Induced Premelting and Structural Transformation of Gold Nanorod

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation of a gold nanorod has been simulated by a method that couples two-temperature model into molecular dynamics. Numerical results show that the surface premelting occurs prior to the initiation of planar defect and propagates from the surface layer into the inside of nanorod. Pressure relaxation leads to high-frequency temperature oscillation and two-way transformation between fcc and disordered atoms produced by the dynamic stresses. Partial dislocation cores are initiated on the crystal surfaces due to high stresses, and then noticeable planar defects including stacking faults and twin boundaries on {111} close-packed planes are developed. Finally, only parallel twin boundaries are present in the nanorod, showing favorable agreement with the experimental observation.

Abstract:The Ag nanoparticles colloid was prepared by pulsed laser ablation for different time in 10 ml distilled water without any surface active agent, and it was analysed by means of UV-visible spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the ablation efficiency and absorbance increased fast and shift to higher energies with increasing ablation time from 5 to 10 min, then increased slowly from 10 to 20 min, and increased fast again from 20 to 25 min. The morphologies of most Ag nanoparticles were nearly spherical. The average diameter and its distribution decreased from 5 to 7.5 min, then increased from 7.5 to 15 min, and decreased from 15 to 25 min.

Abstract:We have investigated, by using Z-scan technique with ns pulses at 532nm, the nonlinear absorptions of Au-nanoparticles-precipitated glasses obtained by irradiation of focused femtosecond pulses with the help of heat treatment. We observed the saturable absorption behavior in Au-nanoparticles-precipitated glasses.We obtain, by fitting to the experimental results, in the light of the local field effect near the surface plasmon resonance,Imχ(3)m=57×10-7 esu for the imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibilities for Au nanoparticles. The nonlinear response of Au nanoparticles in the glass samples arises mainly from the hot electron contribution.

Abstract:Diffraction limit has been the constraint of the nanostructure fabrication. Because the scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) can work in the evanescent near-field region, its application in nano-processing has received extensive attention from researchers globally. In this paper, we combined nanosecond laser with cantilevered scanning near-field optical microscopy probe. Utilizing the high precision of the confinement and enhancement effect of probe tip and the high instantaneous energy of the laser, we realized nanostructure fabrication and in situ detection on Au nano-film. Feature sizes down to 47 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM) were fabricated. We investigated the laser propagation through the SNOM tip aperture and the light field intensity distribution on the surface of substrate theoretically. The calculation results demonstrate that the laser is highly restricted within the SNOM aperture and enhanced on the exit plane at the rim of aperture. After the transmission, the light field intensity distribution on the surface of the Au nano-film was enhanced due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The thermal distribution on the surface of Au nano-film indicates that the peak of the temperature distribution appeared at the surface right underneath the center of the aperture. It is proved that the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:We report on the precipitation control of Au nanoparticles in periodic arrays in silicate glass. Au2O-doped glass samples were first irradiated by two 800 nm interfered femtosecond laser pulses at room temperature and then heat treated at 550 degreesC for the Au nanoparticle precipitation in the laser irradiation areas. One-dimensional periodic arrays of the Au nanoparticles were controlled by changing the pulse energy and the incident angle between the interfered laser pulses. The smallest dimension in the obtained arrays was a width of 300 nm. The mechanism of the metal nanoparticle precipitation by this technique was discussed. Only two pulses are required to encode these periodic microstructures, which are applicable to emerging nanostructure devices such as optical memory with ultrahigh storage density, micrograting with high diffractive efficiency and integrative micro-optical switches. Abstract:Au colloids were prepared by irradiation with a Nd:YAG laser. Au nanoparticles were characterized by absorption spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. It is found that the wavelength of the laser has no effect on the size but the number of the Au nanoparticles. By irradiating a transparent silica gel doped with gold ions with the focused laser in the gel and subsequent exposing in air, a space-selective pattern of letter “ P ” consisting of Au nanoparticles was observed inside the silica gel.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities of Au nanoparticles precipitated inside glasses induced by irradiation of a focused femtosecond laser were investigated using Z-scan technique with 8 ns pulses at 532 nm. The transformation behaviors both from self-defocusing to self-focusing and from saturable absorption to reverse saturable absorption were observed in the glass samples, which depend drastically on the irradiation power density of the femtosecond laser used. The optical nonlinearities were analyzed in detail and proved numerically by the excited-state theory of conduction band electrons.

Abstract:The laser synthesis and processing of colloids represents a group of scalable and "green" synthesis methods of crystalline metal oxides, that have recently made encouraging progresses in preparing amorphous as well as defect-rich nanoparticles . The relevant conditions and mechanisms that allow the design of amorphous metal oxides (AMOs) remain unknown. Consequently, in this work the synthesis of Fe-based partially amorphous oxide nanoparticles (NPs) by pulsed laser ablation in water was studied. Furthermore, both laser pulse duration and the number of laser pulse in pulsed laser fragmentation in liquid (LFL) allow a precise control of amorphization of AMOs in water. Hereby, a high-fluence nanosecond-LFL provides a significantly higher amorphization rate, whereas picosecond-LFL always presents minor fractions of crystalline α-Fe even with a higher specific energy input and laser intensity. Consequently, the laser fluence required for the repeated melting and quenching of NP appears to be the decisive parameter to control amorphization. During laser synthesis and processing of colloids, the amorphization of AMOs appears to be linked to the apparent size reduction effect, while a complete full amorphization of AMOs may be attributed to the stronger oxidation effects. This work will stimulate future studies using laser-generated AMO NPs for further functional purposes.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles colloid was prepared by pulsed laser ablation of silver target for 10 min in distilled water at different repetition rate and laser fluence to study the effect of laser ablation parameters on the silver nanoparticles colloid.Particles size,morphology and absorption spectroscopy of the obtained nanoparticles colloid were characterized by ultraviolet to visible(UV-Vis) spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscope(TEM),and the average diameter and diameter distribution were analyzed by Image-ProPlus software.The results showed that the average diameter of the silver nanoparticles prepared at repetition rate of 10 Hz and laser fluence of 4.2 J/cm2 was the smallest(D=17.54 nm),the distribution of particle size was narrowest(δ=36.86 nm) and the morphologies were fairly homogeneous.So it was confirmed that control of nanoparticles size and shape was possible by laser ablation parameters.In addition,based on the experimental results,the effects of laser ablation parameters on the silver nanoparticles colloid was discussed in terms of fragmentation and melting induced aggregation of colloidal particles by self-absorption of laser pulses.
