Abstract:What on earth is the means of thinking for human beings Do we have to think with language or may we think without language Though such questions have aroused the interest of linguists, anthropologists, psychologists, philosophers, neuro-scientists and even computer experts, up till now they still cannot offer a satisfactory and unimpeachable answer to these questions. In academic fields, there exist two extreme points of view. One is Identification and the other is Disjunction. The theories of Identification see language and thinking as a single matter while the theories of Disjunction take the two apart. It is claimed by the authors that either of them has its reasonable side but both go to the extremity, and that language and thinking can be combined as well as departed from both perspectives of phylogeny and ontogeny. Thinking is actually the process of concept while words and images are terms to express and expand thinking in working storage. The course of thinking is the course of processing concepts in the brain, during which language is sometimes involved and sometimes not. Although language is one of the major means of thinking for Homo sapiens and although there is an intimate relationship between language and thinking, language is not equal to thinking, which emerges before the acquisition of language, which can also be conducted with means other than language, and which processes information much swifter than the generation of language. Therefore, it is attempted in this paper from the perspective of the relationship between language and thinking to declare that thinking can be categorized into thinking with language which may be subdivided into natural language thinking, special language (sign language and braille) thinking and formula language thinking, and thinking without language which may be subdivided into image thinking and paralinguistic thinking. If we take all these thinking models as signs, then we may conclude that thinking is by means of signs and that thinking is represented by signs in the mind.

Abstract:In man's conscious experience,there exists from the very beginning an idiosyncrasy of ″for-me″,i.e.″quale″,the origin of cognition.Since Computational Theory of Mind takes the objectivist view of meaning,the classic view of representation totally ignores the individual,subjective qualia of the cognitive agent.However,unlike computer,man's cognition is not merely a process of computation,but also a connection with basic intentional meanings between himself and the world.As man's thinking begins with the expression of a certain intentional meaning,and as the expression of any meaning always takes on a form of the presentation of body-movement schema,mental image or language,he will do it by means of neural activities of the internal integrated brain-and-body system.To probe into the origin of cognition,it is claimed in this paper that we should extend the notion of Computational Theory of Mind.The brain-and-body neural system does have the capacity of processing input information,and in the meantime emerging the qualia of ″for-me″ as well.Because of qualia,the agent's cognitive behaviors get their orientations and meanings.Therefore,the agent's emotion,mood and conation no longer unrelate to cognition,and indeed,they play an essential role in the processing of cognitive meaning.Based on this view,we are trying to explain the process of verbal thinking.Verbal thinking is not a single flow,but the integration of generation and expression of the meaning.The generation of thinking is a process of semantic generation in the brain of an individual,which presents the individual characteristic in the generation and process of meaning,and the generation of thinking is centered on meaning.The expression of thinking is a process of orientation intentional communication dependent on grammatical rules.Thus,it must satisfy the needs of commonality of communication and must be restricted by stricter grammatical rules while expressed in words.We have found that there are three contradictions in the process of verbal thinking: the contradiction between the individuality in generation of thinking and the commonality in the expression of thinking,the contradiction between the integrity of meaning and the linearity of signs,and the contradiction between the infinity of the generation of thinking and the finity of the grammatical rules.It is the three contradictions that constitute the motivity driving the development of man's verbal thinking.

Abstract:I have been exploring Thinking Psychology(TP) in the past forty years;and here make a review,in five respects,of what I have achieved.(i) Thinking is the core of intelligence;and the underlying basis for the idea of "thinking as the core" of intelligence is the quality of thinking.(ii) Thinking has a three-edged structure,which includes six components: purpose,process,data,quality,self-monitoring,and non-identity factor;and the theoretical basis of TP is thinking structure.(iii) The syntheticality of thinking is its quality.(iv) A new model of thinking is developed for a proper understanding of thinking development in terms of the achievements in Developmental Psychology.(v) The breakthrough of thinking fostering lies in promoting the thinking capability of human beings,that is,the quality of thinking.

Abstract:Human thinking is an organic whole which can be divided into five basic states.They are as follow: thinking of religion,thinking of philosophy,thinking of science,thinking of mathematics,thinking of art.They have their essence and they are of the state and significance special.From the content of them,human thinking can be divided into religion,philosophy and science.Religion is based in the mysteriousness of world,philosophy is based on the Comprehensibility of world,and science relies on the confirmation of beings.Religious thinking is the earliest,philosophical thinking is produced from Religious thinking,and scientific thinking is produced from philosophical thinking.From the way of study,human thinking can be divided into philosophy,mathematics and art.Philosophy grasps things from the way of quality,mathematics grasps things from the way of quantity and art grasps things the unity of quality and quantity.The quality of philosophy is the pure quality,the quantity of mathematics is the pure quantity,both are of metaphysic property,and art is the unity of metaphysic and physic.As philosophic thinking has the fundamental property of being exceeding,criticism and reflection,and each state of thinking possesses the characteristics of uniqueness and irreplaceablity,human thinking has the properties of wholeness,rich complexity and multi-levels.

Abstract:This paper, based on findings in brain organization and cognitive neuroscience, proposed a more low-level and plausible architecture of human cognition, called CAUT, which can demonstrate the diagram and mechanism of human thinking. Comparing with existing models, three changes are made: (1) a pathway called inner loop is added from motor controller to thalamus; (2) a memory controller is added in front of long-term declarative memory, which can judge whether the memory operation is retrieval or not; (3) two new modules, Active Object buffer (AO) and Active Action buffer, are separated out of the general working memory model. With CAUT architecture, a dynamic cognitive model is put out with which typical thinking processes can be interpreted and described more precisely. Problem solving are demonstrated with this model, and two typical problems, decision problem and search problem, are interpreted. Experiments with ACT-R indicate that CAUT is consistent with ACT-R in functional level, and the description can be easily transformed into ACT-R model, and CAUT architecture can be taken as a meta-description and design tool to construct cognitive model. Experiments with ACT-R also indicate the effectiveness of CAUT architecture. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:We argue that Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences is surprisingly analogous to the theory of intelligence implied in the ancient Chinese educational program of the 'Six Arts', even though there are also important differences between them. Although we regard components of intellectual structure as multiple, our theory of intelligence is also different from Gardner's. In this paper we (1) compare Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences and the theory of intelligence implied in the Six Arts education of ancient China, and (2) analyze Lin Chongde's theory of intelligence and his perspective that the components of intellectual structure are diverse.

Abstract:In the past several decades, research comparing dialectical and non-dialectical (“linear”) cultures has flourished, as have empirical studies on holistic versus analytic thinking. This literature has identified East-West cultural differences in almost all aspects of the human condition and life, from the manner in which people reason and make decisions, to how they conceptualize themselves and others, to how they cope with stress and mental illness. This chapter defines dialectical and holistic thinking, distinguishing them from related epistemologies (e.g., Hegelian and Marxist dialectical thinking) and cultural constructs (e.g., collectivism and interdependence). The chapter then discusses the various ways dialectical thinking has been operationalized, measured (e.g., with the Dialectical Self Scale), and manipulated in the literature. Lastly, the chapter examines the issue of how dialecticism, especially tolerance of contradiction, influences the manner in which people respond to self-report measures in the first place and the implications this has for cross-cultural research.

Abstract:So-called structure refers to a relatively fixed relationship,either specific difference or similarity,between elements.Structure the concept bears fundamental features such as dual comparability and relatively fixed characteristics,and non-fundamental features,multiple possibility and changing possibility.Recognition of specific structure depends on structural perspective,while the discovery of structural perspective depends both on individual's conditions and on social conditions.The concept of structure in the sense of collectivity falls in dilemma because it takes collectivity and element as its precondition,while it conflicts with itself in change feature due to its premise of static dual comparability.Structural analysis regards classical inductive logic as its basis,so only through combining contradiction analysis,systematic analysis and process analysis can structural analysis avoid its own weaknesses.

Abstract:This paper posits that universal atomic elements exist that underlie complex cognition. At its core, constructs are born of the dynamics of thinking operating on information. This elemental understanding of the structural underpinnings - and the dynamics between and among the elements - provides insight into the value of thinking and awareness of one’s thinking to everyday life and scientific inquiry. Knowledge of the structural and dynamical properties of human thought leads to generative, purposeful, and predictive cognitive acts that evolve one’s thinking. As a result, our mental models (comprised of information and thinking) of how systems work are better aligned with how they exist in the real world. This alignment yields better solutions, innovation and results. Continued inquiry into the universality of these structural elements has significant potential to advance understanding across a wide variety of academic disciplines. In other words, the study of cognition is deemed synonymous with the evolution of science and knowledge itself.

Abstract:Recent activities in virtually all fields engaged in consciousness studies indicate early signs of a structural turn, where verbal descriptions or simple formalisations of conscious experiences are replaced by structural tools, most notably mathematical spaces. My goal here is to offer three comments that, in my opinion, are essential to avoid misunderstandings in these developments early on. These comments concern metaphysical premises of structural approaches, the viability of structure-preserving mappings, and the question of what a structure of conscious experience is in the first place. I will also explain what, in my opinion, are the great promises of structural methodologies and how they might impact consciousness science at large.

Abstract:Adaptive control of thought-rational (ACT-R; J. R. Anderson & C. Lebiere, 1998) has evolved into a theory that consists of multiple modules but also explains how these modules are integrated to produce coherent cognition. The perceptual-motor modules, the goal module, and the declarative memory module are presented as examples of specialized systems in ACT-R. These modules are associated with distinct cortical regions. These modules place chunks in buffers where they can be detected by a production system that responds to patterns of information in the buffers. At any point in time, a single production rule is selected to respond to the current pattern. Subsymbolic processes serve to guide the selection of rules to fire as well as the internal operations of some modules. Much of learning involves tuning of these subsymbolic processes. A number of simple and complex empirical examples are described to illustrate how these modules function singly and in concert.

Abstract:A tremendous change in the development of thinking in the 20th century has been the “return of cognitive thinking to dialectical thinking. Scientific thinking itself contains “ antinomy , which has become a new dialectical mode of thinking. Seen from the relationship between subject and object, continuity and discontinuity, comprehensiveness and one-sidedness, contradiction is the nature of thinking. “ Antimony is in essence the embodiment of indefiniteness of the world and definiteness of knowledge and the diversity of things and linear contradiction of logical means. Related to the formalism and non-formalism and completeness and incompleteness are system and noon-system. Modern development of thinking is also represented by systematology which has self-consciously felt the existence of the non-system after discarding mechanical materialism. The development of modern thinking should be undertaken at three levels, or in other words, modern thinking is one that interacts at the three levels of objective activities of the subject, self-awareness and self-examination, complete subjectivity and complete objectivity.

Abstract:There is no more central issue to education than thinking and reasoning. Certainly, such an emphasis chimes with the rationalist and cognitive deep structure of the Western educational tradition. The contemporary tendency reinforced by cognitive science is to treat thinking ahistorically and aculturally as though physiology, brain structure and human evolution are all there is to say about thinking that is worthwhile or educationally significant. The movement of critical thinking also tends to treat thinking ahistorically, focusing on universal processes of logic and reasoning. Against this trend and against the scientific spirit of the age this paper presents a historical and philosophical picture of thinking. By contrast with dominant cognitive and logical models the paper emphasizes kinds of thinking and styles of reasoning. The paper grows out of interests primarily in the work of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Wittgenstein, and in the extension and development of their work in Critical Theory and French poststructuralist philosophy. The paper draws directly on some of this work to argue for the recognition of different kinds of thinking, which are explored by reference to Heidegger, and also the significance of styles of reasoning, which are explored by reference to Wittgenstein and to Ian Hacking. Transcranial Theory of Mind: A New Revolution of Cognitive Science

Abstract:In recent years, many scientists and philosophers have begun to believe that a new theoretic revolution is occurring in cognitive science. The revolution is the rise of theoretical models of “4E+S” cognition. “4E” denotes “embodied”, “embedded”, “enacted”, and “extended”; “S” denotes “situated”. Differentiating from the traditional computational theory or representational theory of cognition, this branch of new cognitive scientists and philosophers have begun to claim that cognition is embodied, embedded, enacted, extended and situated. All of these five theories agree that cognitive processes can proceed beyond the boundary of the brain. Thus we can synthesize them together as “transcranial cognition” or “transbrain cognition”. The questions are: Are there common characteristics of these five models? Can we integrate them together with a new model of cognition? Is the “4E+S” model a real Copernicus style revolution of cognitive science? This article analyzes these questions and provides the following answers: There is a common characteristics of these cognitive theories and it is the characteristics of transcranialness, i. e. cognition or mind can exist beyond brain; We can integrate them together as transcranial cognition; The new theory of cognition or mind is a new big extended theory of traditional cognitive science.

Abstract:Some researches on mental mechanisms of human thinking in fields of logical reasoning, in-sight, hypothesis-testing, thinking skills training in psychological circle showed:① The subjects think not in informal logic in daily life, but in mental logic. ②The mechanism of insight was changing of Problem representation. Insight drove by concept was higher transferable than by perception.③ The heuristics were most important strategies in hypothesis-testing processing (hypothesis formation, design and experimental testing). ④The children's academic Performances were significantly improved through the thinking-strategies training in subject matter domains.

Abstract:Researches on the status,effect and manifestation of cognitive subjects have been deepening gradually in scientific activities,and the "present" science has been widely paid close attention to as well.It is necessary for us to examine the collective cognition,and the cognitive activities with the community as the subject.R.Merton and T.Kuhn have attached importance to the role structure and the effect of cognitive subjects,M.Polanyi held that more attention should be paid to tacit knowledge in the scientific cognition,and R.Giere posed the distributed cognition of the subject.All of these theories would become the possible approaches to resolve the prima-facie contradictions between individuality and publicity,knowledge and act in science.
