Abstract:Algebraic thinking skills are important for students because algebraic thinking will promote ways to interpret mathematics. The results of preliminary research on the algebraic thinking ability of PGMI students showed an average problem solving of 18.46, mathematical modelling of 18.26, reasoning ability of 5.54, analytical thinking of 8.8 and generalization of 17, with a maximum value of 20. These results indicate that for indicators of analytical thinking and reasoning students are still low. This study aims to develop an e-book of algebraic thinking skills integrated with habits of mind and Islamic characters for prospective elementary school teachers. This type of research is development research using the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). The developed e-book was validated by several experts including media experts, material experts and Islamic experts to ensure the quality of the e-book produced before the field trial. Product trials were conducted on 230 PGMI students. Based on the results of the study, it is known that the feasibility of the algebraic thinking ability e-book integrated with habits of mind and Islamic characters is categorized as very good, with a value of 4.77 from a maximum scale of 5 while practicality obtained a score of 4.11 in the good category

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of learning constructivist mathematics through Guided Discovery Learning assisted with the Shapes Doll to improve Mathematical Ability of students Creative Thinking effective with valid and practical tools. This research is a development research that refers to the modified Plomp model. Learning tools developed consist of syllabus, lesson plan, worksheet, and Test of creative thinking ability. Test data is processed by one sample t test, z proportion test, comparative test, regression, and Gain test. The results of the development of learning tools: (1) learning tools that was developed valid according to the validator with an average syllabus validation value of 4.29, lesson plan 4.37, worksheet 4.27, and Test 4.02; (2) effective learning, by achieving: a) The experimental class mathematical creative thinking ability reaches class average completeness and classical completeness, b) attitude and activeness together have a positive effect on mathematical creative thinking ability, c) The ability to think creatively mathematically in the experimental class students with an average of 81, 21 is better than the control class of 70.82, d) Increased ability of mathematical creative thinking in the device trial class by 61%.

Abstract:In light of the importance of developing critical thinking, and given the scarcity of research on critical thinking in mathematics education in the broader context of higher order thinking skills, we have carried out a research that examined how teaching strategies oriented towards developing higher-order thinking skills influenced students’ critical thinking abilities. The guiding rationale of the work was that such teaching can foster the students’ skills of and dispositions towards critical thinking. In this article, we discuss ways in which critical thinking can be incorporated in mathematics instruction. In particular, we highlight how content taught in the probability strand can intentionally be focused on the development of students’ critical thinking. We report results of a study demonstrating improvement in secondary mathematics students’ dispositions towards critical thinking and abilities to think critically.

Abstract:Summary. Three levels of mathematical concepts are outlined. Level 1 consists of concepts which depend on binary relations and unary operations. Level 2 consists of concepts which can be encoded as binary operations, and Level 3 consists of concepts which can be expressed as compositions of binary operations. Three levels of cognitive development which correspond in theory to the levels of mathematical concept understanding are outlined, and appropriate illustrative performances are given. Samples of Australian and Canadian school children were tested on problems designed to require Level 2 or 3 mathematical understanding. Success rates were consistent with predictions for each age group. The application of cognitive development theory to the teaching of mathematics to children is considered, and an alternative approach is proposed. It is specifically predicted that ability to attain concepts at any of the three levels will be a function of information-processing capacity, which will be a necessary but not sufficient condition. Once the minimum required information-processing capacity is available, acquisition will be a function of experience and task variables. Thus concepts should be expected to emerge neither synchronously nor in any defined sequence, and they should emerge gradually rather than abruptly across an entire population.

Abstract:This study aims to determine the response and potential effects of using a mathematics e-book on the Pythagorean theorem material. The method used in the development of this ebook is ADDIE. The research data was obtained through student response questionnaires, and student learning outcomes test The subjects used were 15 grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 3 Mesuji Raya, Kab. Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra. Based on the results of data analysis, student responses about practicality obtained the criteria of "very practical" with an average percentage of 86.22%. While the potential influence aspect is stated to have "potential influence" with an average percentage of 86.66% of the student learning outcomes test. The Pythagorean theorem mathematics e-book is suitable for students to use and can be developed on other materials.

The committee identifies five interdependent components of mathematical proficiency and describes how students develop this proficiency. With examples and illustrations, the book presents a portrait of mathematics learning: * Research findings on what children know about numbers by the time they arrive in pre-K and the implications for mathematics instruction. * Details on the processes by which students acquire mathematical proficiency with whole numbers, rational numbers, and integers, as well as beginning algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics. Mathematical Thinking and Learning

Abstract:Recent research has shown that many upper elementary school children do not master the skill of solving mathematical application problems. In this design experiment, a learning environment for teaching and learning how to model and solve mathematical application problems was developed and tested in 4 classes of 5th graders. Pupils were taught a series of heuristics embedded in an overall metacognitive strategy for solving mathematical application problems. Meanwhile, pupils of 7 control classes followed regular mathematics classes. The implementation and effectiveness of the experimental learning environment were tested in a study with a pretest-posttest-retention test design with an experimental and a control group. The results indicate that the intervention had a positive effect on different aspects of pupils' mathematical modeling and problem-solving abilities.

Abstract:This paper begins by considering the cognitive mechanisms available to individuals which enable them to operate successfully in different parts of the mathematics curriculum. We base our theoretical development on fundamental cognitive activities, namely, perception of the world, action upon it and reflection on both perception and action. We see an emphasis on one or more of these activities leading not only to different kinds of mathematics, but also to a spectrum of success and failure depending on the nature of the focus in the individual activity. For instance, geometry builds from the fundamental perception of figures and their shape, supported by action and reflection to move from practical measurement to theoretical deduction and euclidean proof. Arithmetic, on the other hand, initially focuses on the action of counting and later changes focus to the use of symbols for both the process of counting and the concept of number. The evidence that we draw together from a number of studies on children’s arithmetic shows a divergence in performance. The less successful seem to focus more on perceptions of their physical activities than on the flexible use of symbol as process and concept appropriate for a conceptual development in arithmetic and algebra. Advanced mathematical thinking introduces a new feature in which concept definitions are formulated and formal concepts are constructed by deduction. We show how students cope with the transition to advanced mathematical thinking in different ways leading once more to a diverging spectrum of success.

Abstract:This study aims to develop LKPD based on the ExCluSiVE learning model that is feasible, practical and effective to improve creative thinking skills in mathematics subjects in grade IV elementary schools. The type of research and development used refers to the theory of Research and Development (R&D) Borg and Gall. The population in this study was 36 students in grade IV UPTD SD Negeri 5 Metro Timur. The samples in this study were class IVA as an experimental class and class IVB as a control class. Data collection techniques in this study are observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. Data analysis techniques use qualitative descriptive analysis with data review and quantitative descriptive analysis using expert data, product practicality, validity, reliability, difficulty level, N-gain, normality, homogeneity, and effectiveness. The results showed an average expert test of 89.78% with feasible criteria, an average practicality test of 87.50% with very practical criteria; validity test V Aiken LKPD for material of 0.66, media of 0.67, language of 0.65 with valid criteria; reliability test of Cronbach’s Alpha material 0.817, medium 0.720, language 0.796 with high category; the average increase in students’ creative thinking ability before and after the study was 26.20%; the average N-Gain value is 0.83 in the high category; Test the effectiveness of independent sample t-test: 1) tCalculate value is 5.469 and tTable (df-34, α=5%) is 1.690, then tCalculate ≥ tTable, α=5%, 2) Sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.000 < 0.05. The results of the study can be concluded LKPD based on the ExCluSiVE learning model to improve creative thinking skills in mathematics learning in grade IV SD Negeri 5 Metro Timur on feasible, practical and effective flat building materials.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to examine early childhood math and some strategies on how early childhood math can be enhanced. Math is an important subject in the school curriculum that cannot be overlooked. The young child's math abilities or skills need to be developed for future life. Some methods on how to improve young children's abilities were reviewed. It was a qualitative study. From the review, it was revealed that developing young child math abilities is vital for them to progress in future math. Also, the reviews indicated that math assists young children in building up their math ability to solve problems and think critically. The findings demonstrate the importance of early childhood mathematics programs as a foundation for subsequent math teaching. Young children require a mathematical foundation from an early age in order to develop the concepts and abilities needed to succeed in school, multiple professions, and even daily life.
Maths for Einstein's Universe Tools for Understanding Modern Reality

Abstract:Aversion to mathematics is a recognised and widespread problem. Following a review of the literature on this subject, this paper presents an education program which has been developed to test the hypothesis that transferring attention from traditional school arithmetic to a broad range of mathematical skills relevant to modern science at an early age (ages 7-12) will improve students' attitudes to mathematics, reduce the incidence of maths anxiety and prepare students for topics normally introduced at more senior levels. The program entitled Maths for Einstein's Universe includes five modules covering extreme numbers, estimation, probability, vectors and curved space geometry taught through group activities, games and plays. The modules complement appropriate early learning of modern physical concepts from the subatomic world to cosmology. While connected to science, the program aims to provide meaning and comprehension for socially relevant topics from national budgets to pandemics and opinion polls. The program has been trialled in multiple short workshops and extended learning programs as well as training programs for school teachers. Analysis of knowledge and attitude tests and questionnaires from about 170 participants demonstrate strong student enthusiasm and positive learning outcomes in areas normally considered beyond the ability of students in this age group. Trial results were used to identify strategies for enhancing school mathematics based on creation of stronger links between mathematics and science. We summarise results of pilot trials. In the paper we present the results of learning powers of ten and vectors. In total, around 700 participants have trialled Maths Einstein's Universe with nearly 200 hours of teaching for students and teachers.

Abstract:Abstract This research was motivated by the low thinking level of SMK Mega Link Majene students in solving higher-order thinking problems and inadequate math teachers using mathematics applications in the learning process. This study aims to develop student worksheets assisted by the GeoGebra application to develop higher-order thinking skills. This research is Research and Development (RnD) using the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The participants were 27 eleventh-grade students of SMK Mega Link Majene. The instruments were tests, student activity observation sheets, teacher implementation sheets, and questionnaires. The student worksheets should meet the characteristic of helping students develop higher-order thinking skills–analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The results showed that the student worksheets were in the valid category. The worksheets also fulfilled the practicality category: the learning implementation was well-executed, and met the effectiveness categories: (1) the students’ high-level thinking ability in mathematics on average was in the high category; (2) student activity was in the very active category; and (3) student responses to the student worksheets assisted by the GeoGebra application obtained a very positive response. The findings implied that the development of student worksheets assisted by the GeoGebra application met the valid, practical, and effective criteria.

Abstract:Students' mastery of geometry topics affects their ability to understand other mathematical topics. In addition, students are required to have higher-order thinking skills. Previous research shows that ICT media played an important role in improving students’ higher-order thinking skills. This study was carried out to produce a cuboid volume learning trajectory in ICT-assisted learning that can support students' higher-order thinking skills. This research employed validation design which consisted of three main stages, namely preliminary, experiment, and retrospective analysis. It was held during two main cycles. Sixty-four students of the eighth-grade in Palembang, Ogan Ilir, Manado, and West Papua were involved as research subjects. Data were collected through validation sheets, observations, interviews, and documents in the form of student worksheets. Then, the data were analyzed qualitatively and described narratively. The learning design developed was able to help students use higher-order thinking skills where students analyzed, evaluated, and used their creativity in answering the problems given. The results of this study can inform the policy making for teachers in designing mathematics learning and for lecturers to carry out mentoring for teachers in designing mathematics learning based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) and ICT media.

Abstract:Mathematics learning in elementary schools is not fully oriented to higher order thinking skills (HOTS). In fact, HOTS play an important role in solving mathematical problems so that they require the support of effective teaching materials. The purpose of this study was to develop mathematics teaching materials to improve HOTS in grade 3 elementary school students. This research is a development research using the Borg & Gall model. The stages of this research consist of information gathering, development planning, product draft development, and initial product testing. Research data obtained through questionnaires and tests. The data were then analyzed using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the product assessment results from material experts were 88.09, media experts were 92.00, linguists were 92.30, and practitioners were 92.24. Considering the results of the validation assessment from several experts, it can be concluded that the mathematics teaching materials developed have been feasible to improve HOTS in grade 3 elementary school students. The development of 3D-based mathematics teaching materials on two-dimentional figure provides assistance for students in solving problems more realistically and easily. Book products are not only in the form of pictures but can be seen, folded or rotated so that they can develop students' thinking in analyzing, evaluating and creating which are adapted to the context of solving mathematical problems in elementary schools.

Abstract:The problem in learning mathematics is the low ability to think creatively. Students are less able to produce innovative ideas to overcome new problems. This research aims to develop a valid and practical integrated ethnomathematics student worksheet. The type of research used in this research is development research. The research model used is the Plomp model, which divides the development stage into three phases: the initial investigation, development, and assessment. The subjects of this research were one mathematics material expert, 1 Indonesian language expert, and one art expert, as well as three teachers as a test of media practicality. The trial subjects for this research consisted of individual trials consisting of 3 students and small group trials consisting of 9 students. The methods used to collect data are observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and tests. Data analysis techniques are carried out qualitatively and quantitatively, as well as inferential statistics. The results of this research are validation results of 3.63 with a very valid category. The students' practicality results were 93.05 in the very practical category. The students' practical results were 96.04 in the very practical category. The t-test results show an influence of the Ethnomathematics Integrated Student Worksheet on Extensive Measurement Material on students' creative thinking abilities. It was concluded that the Student Worksheet integrated Ethnomathematics in data area measurement material was very valid and very practical, so it was suitable for use in learning in the fourth grade of elementary school.

Abstract:In the paper the results of an empirical study, which has evaluated the development of mathematical literacy in an innovative teaching programme, are presented. The theoretical approach of mathematical literacy relies strongly on applications and modelling and the study follows the approach of R. Bybee, who develops a theoretical concept of different levels of literacy. Using this approach, the development of mathematical literacy over one year of a selected group of students within this curriculum project is described. It becomes clear that at the lower level of mathematical literacy great progress has been made, but the progress is quite small at the higher level of mathematical literacy. Especially concerning translation competencies between mathematics and reality, and vice versa, the progress is small and there are great deficits within the students.
Origins of mathematical intuitions: the case of arithmetic

Abstract:Mathematicians frequently evoke their "intuition" when they are able to quickly and automatically solve a problem, with little introspection into their insight. Cognitive neuroscience research shows that mathematical intuition is a valid concept that can be studied in the laboratory in reduced paradigms, and that relates to the availability of "core knowledge" associated with evolutionarily ancient and specialized cerebral subsystems. As an illustration, I discuss the case of elementary arithmetic. Intuitions of numbers and their elementary transformations by addition and subtraction are present in all human cultures. They relate to a brain system, located in the intraparietal sulcus of both hemispheres, which extracts numerosity of sets and, in educated adults, maps back and forth between numerical symbols and the corresponding quantities. This system is available to animal species and to preverbal human infants. Its neuronal organization is increasingly being uncovered, leading to a precise mathematical theory of how we perform tasks of number comparison or number naming. The next challenge will be to understand how education changes our core intuitions of number.
