Abstract:Three methods including the calculation method, differential scanning calorimetry and metallographic techniques were employed to calculate and measure the phase transformation temperature of TC11 titanium alloy. The comparison between the three methods indicates that the theory value obtained by the calculation method approaches the true value, because this method requires that the content of each element in the TC11 alloy is in a certain range. The value obtained by the differential scanning calorimetry method is a little exorbitant, because continuous heating delays the phase transformation. The phase transformation temperature can be measured accurately by the metallographic technique if more quenching temperatures are chosen. In the metallographic method, the microstructure of the samples quenched from different temperatures was observed and the temperature at which the primary α phase disappear was determined, so that the α+β/β transformation temperature of the TC11 titanium alloy is determined to be 1035 ℃. The reason of the difference of phase transformation temperature between different titanium alloys was discussed.

Abstract:The phase transition point of Ti80 alloy was researched by calculation method and continuous heating-up method.The transformation point of the alloy was calculated according to the influence of alloying elements and impurity element on the phase transformation point temperature.The microstructure change of Ti80 alloy was observed under different quenching temperature.The temperature of primary α phase which disappears completely is regard as the phase transformation point of the alloy.The two methods can obtain similar data,and the phase transformation point of the alloy in the batch is 1025℃.

Abstract:(α+β)/β phase transformation temperature of a TC11 titanium alloy was confirmed to be 1035°C, which was obtained by three methods including the calculation method, differential scanning calorimetry and metallographic techniques. Based on this result, annealing treatments below and above the (α+β)/β phase transformation temperature were carried out, and the microstructure of the TC11 alloys before and after annealing treatment was analyzed by SEM. The result showed that conventional annealing below 1035°C does not change the Widmanstaten structure of TC11 alloy, though the thickness of α lamellar structure becomes thicker with increasing the annealing temperature. The microstructure of the TC11 alloy treated by annealing above the α+β/β transformation temperature is non-uniform because of the different forming temperature and growing duration of α phase in the TC11 alloy.

Abstract:In this paper, changes in the morphology and composition of the O, α2 and B2/β phases and the transformation relationship between the three phases of Ti22Al25Nb alloy were systematically investigated by performing a series of short heat treatments. The results showed that the phase transformations can be divided into three stages in the temperature range of 870°C~1080°C. In the first stage of 870°C~930°C, the O phase started transferring to α2+B2 first along grain boundaries with lamellar morphology due to short-range diffusion, and the O→α2+B2 reaction was accompanied by a large amount of Nb segregation. With the increase in temperature, the phase transformation migrated from the boundaries to the inside of the grains, and the α2-phase spheroidized gradually. In the second stage from 960°C to 1020°C, granular α2 and B2 phases precipitated directly from the O phase due to long-range diffusion. At 1020°C, the O→α2+B2 transition was completed and the granular α2 phase mainly populated along the grain boundaries. In the third stage above 1020°C, the main phase transformation was α2→B2, and the aggregation and growth of the α2 phase were observed in α2-rich regions.

Abstract:The hot deformation behavior of a novel near-beta titanium alloy Ti-5.5Mo-6V-7Cr-4Al-2Sn-1Fe in (α+β) phase region in the temperature of 605~755°C and strain rate range of 10−3~10−1/s−1 was investigated on the Gleeble-3800 thermo-mechanical simulator. The results showed that the deformation parameters can have a significant influence on flow softening behavior and the microstructure evolution, as well as dynamic recrystallization is remarkable at temperature 755°C and strain rate 10−3s−1. The flow stress decreases with the increase of temperature and decrease of strain rate. With the rise of temperature and strain rate, the content of α phase gradually decreases. During the thermal deformation process, the α phase content decreases with the increase of the strain rate and the size of α phase decreases with increasing temperature. αGB is short rod or spherical. And α phase precipitated after short-term aging preferentially nucleated within the grains after aging treatment. Moreover, the thermal-mechanical process does not induce α phase generation compared to general heat treatment.

Abstract:Phase transformation and microstructure evolution of a Ti2AlNb alloy upon cooling from B2/beta phase at rates of 0.02-100 degrees C/s were investigated by using X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, and thermal dilatometer. At the lowest cooling rate of 0.02 degrees C/s, both alpha(2) and O phases precipitate from the B2/beta phase. The precipitation is prior to occur at the grain boundary of the parent phase, which even makes alpha(2) phase almost disappear from the interior of the grain. Cooling the alloy at a higher rate results in a decreasing amount of the precipitates. The critical rate for the complete depression of alpha(2) and O phase precipitation is 0.5 degrees C/s and 4 degrees C/s, respectively. According to the established continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram, the temperature interval for B2/beta -> O phase transformation decreases with increasing cooling rate. The alloy cooled at the rate of 0.1 degrees C/s has the highest microhardness for the appropriate size and amount of the precipitated phases. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The omega phase transformation during isothermal aging and continuous heating process for three metastable beta titanium alloys, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553), Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-1Zr (Ti-55531) and Ti-7Mo-3Cr-3Nb-3Al (Ti-7333) were studied by dilatometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. Results show that the fa phase transformation window of Ti-5553 and 11-55531 alloys is about 275 degrees C-350 degrees C, while that of Ti-7333 alloy is 200 degrees C-375 degrees C. The omega particles produced during ageing process is larger than that produced during continuous heating process. A new developed Mo equivalent formula was used to discuss the effect of chemical composition on omega phase transformation for metastable beta titanium alloys. It was found that metastable beta titanium alloys with lower Mo equivalent have lower starting temperature of omega phase transformation and wider transformation window.

Abstract:The thermodynamic character of phase transformation of TC4 titanium alloy electron beam welded joint was described.In the point of thermodynamic view,the formation mechanism of different microstructures of TC4 titanium alloy joints in the different heat treatment conditions was analyzed,which provides theoretic base for the method to control phase transformation of TC4 titanium alloy electron beam welded joint by changing heat treatment conditions.The driving force of phase transformation of TC4 titanium alloy electron beam welded joint comes from the difference of chemical free energy between the new phase martensite and the parent phase.The martensite forms throughout the grain,and its orientation was a certain angle.In the case of the post-weld heat treatment which temperature is lower than M_s points,martensite only grows up,but in the case of the post-weld heat treatment which temperature is higher than M_s point,not only martensite grows,but also part of the β-phase becomes saturated solid solution and leaves among the martensite film layers.

Abstract:As a new near β titanium alloy designed by NIN (the Northwest Institute for Non-ferrous Metal Research), the phase transformations of the β-quenched Ti-5Al-3Mo-3V-2Cr-2Zr-1Nb-1Fe alloy during continuous heating have been investigated by means of in situ dilatometer test coupled with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The β-quenched Ti-5321 alloy with an initial structure consisting of metastable β phase and dense ωath, which was subjected to continuous heating treatment and underwent the following transformations: β + ωath → β + ωiso → β + α+ ωiso→ β + α. The ωiso phase precipitated at 300 ℃ with a ~3 nm ellipsoidal morphology. When continuously heated to 390 ℃, a coexistence of both ωiso and α phase was observed in the β matrix, the platelet-like α phase closely nucleating at the ω/β interface with ~1 nm in width and ~8 nm in length. The α phase subsequently developed into lamellar structure when heated to higher temperatures, with a width of ~20 nm at 570 ℃ and ~85 nm at 690 ℃ respectively. Meanwhile, these α laths were uniformly distributed and composed of two distinct orientations within the microstructure. Finally, it can be found that the α morphology is directly associated with the formation and decomposition of the metastable ωiso phase which may lead to the homogeneous and fine distribution of α precipitates. Based on the study of phase transformations occurring during the continuous heating process presented in this paper, an efficient guidance to engineer the microstructures and mechanical properties of this new near β titanium alloy was offered.

Abstract:The kinetics of martensite decomposition in TC21 alloy was investigated at isothermal conditions in the temperature range 500–850 °C. The dilatometry technique was utilized to trace the transformation process for different aging temperatures. Within the framework of the Avrami theory, the analysis of the experimental data was made by means of the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) equation. A very good correspondence between the calculated and the experimental results was found. The JMA kinetic parameters obtained from different aging temperatures implied different mechanisms of the transformation. The α″ phase transforms to α + α″ (rich) at 500 °C and the transformation is incomplete. Further increase of the temperature to 800 and 850 °C results in directly transformation α″ →α + β. The mechanism of the transformation alters during the course of the transformation for 550, 600, 650, 700, and 750 °C. Moreover, The TTT diagram was constructed for the martensite decomposition in TC21 alloy based on the dilatometry analysis and JMA theory, respectively. Good agreement between experimental and calculated TTT diagram is observed.

Abstract:In the present paper the Ti-6Al-4V alloy with α and β phases was deformed by hot rolling and solution heat treated at different temperature for 30 minutes to investigate the transformation of (α+β) to β. The results show that the deformed alloy possesses the typical (α+β) dual-phases microstructure, when the alloy is treated below the 950 °C. With the increase of the heat treatment temperature the volume of α phase decreases significantly. When the temperature is higher than the 970 °C, almost no α phase is left in the alloy.

Abstract:The phase transition of titanium alloys is sensitive to the heat-treatment procedure, accompanied with the latent heat induced by phase transition. However, the latent heat during phase transition of titanium alloy has not been systematically studied, which may result in the gap between designed and actual temperature of the sample and affect the final mechanical properties. In this work, DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and first-principles simulate methods were used to study the β → α phase transition process of TB18 (Ti–Al-Mo-V-Cr-Nb-Fe system) metastable β titanium alloy, especially to reveal the influence of the heating rate on latent heat. The ratio of latent heat to endothermic heat of the sample during temperature rising was introduced to interpret the effect of latent heat to actual temperature. The ratio of latent heat to endothermic heat at 1 ℃/min is about 15 to 20 times higher than that at 10 ℃/min. The higher ratio indicates that the latent heat of phase transition has a more significant effect on the temperature, which is related to the temperature range of phase transition and the α volume fraction. Compared with the heating rate of 1 ℃/min, the β → α phase transition takes place at higher temperature and the volume fraction of α is smaller at 10 ℃/min. Meanwhile, there is a precipitation free zone between grain boundary α and intragranular α and the distribution of α lamellae is heterogeneous when the heating rate is 10 ℃/min. Both of the experimental and theoretical results suggest that the latent heat of phase transition is the main cause of the temperature fluctuation during heat-treatment process. This work has guiding significance for microstructure optimization affected by temperature, to achieve the desired mechanical properties.

Abstract:The phase transformations during thermomechanical processing can be employed to optimize mechanical properties of β-type Ti alloys. However, such understandings are still lacking for the alloy consisting of dual β + α″ phases in solution-treated and quenched state. In this paper, the phase transformations in a Ti38Nb model alloy subjected to different thermomechanical processing were investigated by using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) experiments, and their influence on the Young's modulus was discussed. The results indicated that high-density dislocations introduced by cold rolling still existed after annealing at temperatures lower than 573 K, which can decrease the martensitic transformation start temperature to below room temperature. With annealing temperatures increasing, the α″ → β, β → ωiso, and β → α phase transformations occurred successively. At annealing temperature of 473 K, the specimen consisted of a trace of α″ and ω phases as well as dominant β phase which was kept to room temperature by the high density of dislocations, rather than by the chemical stabilization. As a result, an ultralow Young's modulus of 25.9 GPa was realized. Our investigation not only provides in-depth understandings of the phase transformations during thermomechanical processing of β-type Ti alloys, but also sheds light on designing biomedical Ti alloys with ultralow Young's modulus.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3><h3 class="a-plus-plus">抽象</h3> β钛合金在热机械处理过程中的相变可以用来优化其机械性能。然而对于固溶态为β + α″的双相合金, 其相变和性能关系的研究尚且缺乏。本文利用同步辐射X射线技术研究了Ti38Nb合金在不同热机械处理状态下的相组成, 并讨论了其对杨氏模量的影响规律。结果表明冷轧引入的高密度位错在低于573 K退火后仍然存在, 这可以将马氏体相变点降至室温以下。随退火温度的升高, α″ → β, β → ωiso和β → α相变依次发生。当退火温度为473 K时, 样品中主要由β相组成并含有少量α″和ω相。这其中β相是通过高密度位错保留至室温而非化学成分稳定化。因此合金可以实现25.9 GPa的超低杨氏模量。本研究不但对β钛合金在热机械处理过程中的相变行为提供了深入理解, 而且为超低杨氏模量生物医用钛合金的开发提供了新思路.

Abstract:The beta transformation characteristics and mechanical properties of the β titanium alloy Ti50Zr30Nb10Ta10 in the temperature range between 200 and 900°C have been studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Vickers hardness (HV), and tensile test techniques. In the as-rolled state, only β-phase was identified by XRD. Upon heat-treating at 250°C for 4h, the α-phase was precipitated from the β-phase matrix, and leading to an increase of Vickers hardness. A maximum HV value was observed at 400°C, and then HV value decreased with increasing heat-treating temperature. Above 650°C, HV value remained almost constant. During heat-treating at 300–650°C, the decomposition of the metastable β-phase has been found to proceed through a phase separation reaction leading to the formation of β-Ti and β-Zr b.c.c. solid solution phases rather than the formation of solute rich and solute lean b.c.c. phases as has been previously reported, leading to little or no increase in HV value. The tensile strength, elongation and elastic modulus of Ti50Zr30Nb10Ta10 alloy for as-solution-treated samples are 741MPa, 28.6% and 44GPa, which is better than required values already reported.

Abstract:The phase transformation behavior of Ti-42Al-5Mn (at.%) alloy from different phase regions with various cooling rates was investigated based on electron probe micro analyzer-backscattered electrons (EPMA-BSE). It is shown that β→α2′ takes place when this alloy is cooled at a high rate, such as water quenching (WQ), oil cooling (OC), from β single phase. With the decreasing cooling rate to air cooling (AC), β→α2′ is restrained and β→γ is promoted by forming γ platelets. The room-temperature microstructure is βo + α2 when alloy cooled (WQ and OC) from (β + α) dual-phase. However, under AC, β→γ occurs and γ platelets form. It should be noted that α2→γ happens when this alloy cooled from 1180 °C (>Teut) by OC and AC, forming an incomplete lamellae (α2/γ) structure in the α2 phase. However, when the alloy cooled from 1100 °C (<Teut), α2/γ→βo,sec occurs and complete lamellae generates in α2 phase.
Effects of Solution Temperature on Microstructures and Properties of Ti-23Al-25Nb-0.36Y Alloy

Abstract:Characteristics of phase transformation of Ti-23Al-25Nb-0.36Y alloy were analyzed by DTA.Heat treatment conditions of these alloys were determined by the DTA results.The microstructures and phase composition of alloy were analyzed by means of SEM and XRD.Room temperature compression tests were tested by the Instron-5569 machine.The experimental results show that two endothermic peak appear in DTA curves of Ti-23Al-25Nb-0.36Y alloy.The microstructure of Ti-23Al-25Nb-0.36Y alloy is B2-phase solution treated at 1320 ℃,and O-phase and α2 phase separate out along with decrease of the solution temperature.The alloy with O+B2 phases gained by solution treated at 900 ℃ has the best mechanical properties with the compressive strength of 1976.77 MPa,compressibility of 36.57% and yield strength of 789.91 MPa.

Abstract:Two-phase TC21 titanium alloy samples were solution-treated at 990 °C (β phase zone) and cooled by furnace cooling (FC), air cooling (AC), and water quenching (WQ), respectively. The second solution stage treatment was carried out at 900 °C (α + β phase zone), then aging treatment was performed at 590 °C. The influence of the size and quantity of the α phase on the properties of the sample were studied. The experimental results showed as the cooling rate increased after the first solution stage treatment, wherein the thickness of primary layer α gradually decreased, and the tensile strength and yield strength gradually increased. After the second solution stage treatment, the tensile properties of samples increased due to the quantity of layers α increased. The aging treatment promoted the precipitation of the dispersed α phase and further improved the tensile strength. After the third solution stage treatments, the FC samples with more β-phase had the best comprehensive mechanical properties.

Abstract:)The dynamic continuous-cooling-transformation (CCT) diagrams of Nb–Ti microalloyed steel for four dif-ferent deformation temperatures of 850, 900, 950 and 975°C were plotted by means of a combinedmethod of dilatometry and metallography. The influence of deformation temperature on continuous cool-ing transformation behavior and transformation microstructure was elucidated. The reason that the polyg-onal ferrite transformation field is shifted to the right and moved down as the deformation temperature isincreased and the progress of transformation for lowest continuous cooling rate of 0.5°C/s was obviouslyretarded at the lowest deformation temperature of 850°C was discussed in details based on transforma-tion kinetics and strain-induced precipitation kinetics, respectively. Moreover, the polygonal ferrite grainsize for lowest continuous cooling rate of 0.5°C/s can be significantly refined from approx. 15.4 μm to9.4 μm as the deformation temperature is reduced from 975°C to 850°C. Abstract:The work explores the phase transformation sequence and the kinetics of ω formation in a novel metastable β titanium alloy of Ti–3Al–5Mo–7V–3Cr (wt%) through dilatometer test and phase/microstructure characterizations. The phase transformation sequence has been identified as β → β + ω, β + ω → α + β, β → β + α, and α → β during the continuous heating. The formation of ω phase has underwent nucleation and growth stages revealed by the S-shaped kinetic curve. The diffusion controlled mechanism has been analyzed via Avrami exponent. The average activation energy for β → β + ω phase transformation has been evaluated 90.42 kJ/mol via Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose equation. The activation energy difference between early and late stages of ω formation has been compared among metastable β titanium alloys. The small value of Ti-3573 alloy may imply a thermo-kinetic inconvenience of ω assisted α formation.
