Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to calculate the box dimension of a graph of continuous functions. Using this method, we obtain the box dimension formula for linear fractal interpolation functions (FIFs). Furthermore we prove that the fractional integral of a linear FIF is also a linear FIF and in some cases, there exists a linear relationship between the order of fractional integral and box dimension of two linear FIFs.

Abstract:Based on the theories of fractal interpolation functions, by using Matlab software, we draw the images of fractal interpolation functions for the determined vertical compression factors and random vertical compression factors. Quantitatively analyze the change of the images of the fractal interpolation functions caused by the vertical compression factors. Finally, we calculate Box dimension of the fractal interpolation function. The software developed was tested on real graph. The method was capable of finding optimization fractal function, as the results presented demonstrate.

Abstract:This study used the box-counting method to perform fractal analysis on protein-protein interaction networks compiled from the latest studies.The properties of degree exponent,assortativity coefficient and correlation profile that are closely related to the fractal phenomenon were investigated.The results showed that the protein-protein interaction networks based on current datasets may not be fractal.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a general framework to construct recurrent fractal interpolation surfaces (RFISs) on rectangular grids. Then we introduce bilinear RFISs, which are easy to be generated while there are no restrictions on interpolation points and vertical scaling factors. We also obtain the box dimension of bilinear RFISs under certain constraints, where the main assumption is that vertical scaling factors have uniform sums under a compatible partition.

Abstract:AbstractThe notion of recurrent fractal interpolation functions (RFIFs) was introduced by Barnsley et al. [‘Recurrent iterated function systems’, Constr. Approx.5 (1989), 362–378]. Roughly speaking, the graph of an RFIF is the invariant set of a recurrent iterated function system on $\mathbb {R}^2$ . We generalise the definition of RFIFs so that iterated functions in the recurrent system need not be contractive with respect to the first variable. We obtain the box dimensions of all self-affine RFIFs in this general setting.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we construct a new kind of weighted recursive iteration function system (IFS) and prove the existence of the unique attractor for the kind of IFS based on the Matkowski fixed point theorem. We confirm that the attractor is a bivariate fractal interpolation surface (FIS), which interpolates a given set of data. In addition, we also provide an upper error estimate of such FISs caused by changes of weights. Finally, we give their box dimension estimates for a specific type of the FISs.

Abstract:The fractal dimension is an indispensable tool bridging the two distinct fields of mathematics namely, the fractional calculus and the fractal geometry. Many works have elucidated a linear connection between the order of fractional calculus and the fractal dimension of a given continuous function. In this respect, the present work exclusively connects the order of Caputo-fractional derivative of a continuously differentiable function, defined on a real closed interval, with its box dimension. Meanwhile, the second part of the paper discusses the Caputo-fractional derivative of a special kind of spline fractal interpolation function and impose certain conditions on its scaling factors to prove the resultant function to be a fractal function yet again. Finally, making use of the results in the first part, the upper bound for the box dimension of newly obtained fractal interpolation function is estimated.

Abstract:The weakness of the conventional box counting algorithm in measuring the dimensions of fractals is analyzed. A novel improved box counting method is proposed by introducing a new parameter η , which is the ratio of fractal object's length in a box over the edge length of the box. For fractals having infinite self similar levels, η is also infinite which has no meaning in mathematics. But the fractals existed in the real world all have their scaling limits, so η is meaningful in practical measurement. Its advantage is proved by the examples in the paper, and its limits are also pointed out. The uncertainty in measuring the fractal dimension using box counting method is discussed, and the corresponding means to overcome them are also proposed. Planar laser induced fluorescence technique was employed to measure the concentration field in the near wake region of circular cylinder. Turbulence non turbulence interfaces were extracted from these images, and the new box counting algorithm is used to measure the fractal dimension of these interfaces. The measured results agree with those of other researchers, and it is found that the fractal dimensions vary little with time in an unsteady flow field.

Abstract:We study a wide class of fractal interpolation functions in a single platform by considering the domains of these functions as general attractors. We obtain lower and upper bounds of the box dimension of these functions in a more general setup where the interpolation points need not be equally spaced, the scale vectors can be variables and the maps in the corresponding IFS can be non-affine. In particular, we obtain the exact value of the box dimension of non-affine fractal functions on general m-dimensional cubes and Sierpinski Gasket.
