Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to calculate the box dimension of a graph of continuous functions. Using this method, we obtain the box dimension formula for linear fractal interpolation functions (FIFs). Furthermore we prove that the fractional integral of a linear FIF is also a linear FIF and in some cases, there exists a linear relationship between the order of fractional integral and box dimension of two linear FIFs.

Abstract:Fractal dimensions of a terrain quantitatively describe the self-organized structure of the terrain geometry. However, the local topographic variation cannot be illustrated by the conventional box-counting method. This paper proposes a successive shift box-counting method, in which the studied object is divided into small sub-objects that are composed of a series of grids according to its characteristic scaling. The terrain fractal dimensions in the grids are calculated with the successive shift box-counting method and the scattered points with values of fractal dimensions are obtained. The present research shows that the planar variation of fractal dimensions is well consistent with fault traces and geological boundaries.

Abstract:The fractal dimension is an indispensable tool bridging the two distinct fields of mathematics namely, the fractional calculus and the fractal geometry. Many works have elucidated a linear connection between the order of fractional calculus and the fractal dimension of a given continuous function. In this respect, the present work exclusively connects the order of Caputo-fractional derivative of a continuously differentiable function, defined on a real closed interval, with its box dimension. Meanwhile, the second part of the paper discusses the Caputo-fractional derivative of a special kind of spline fractal interpolation function and impose certain conditions on its scaling factors to prove the resultant function to be a fractal function yet again. Finally, making use of the results in the first part, the upper bound for the box dimension of newly obtained fractal interpolation function is estimated.

Abstract:The weakness of the conventional box counting algorithm in measuring the dimensions of fractals is analyzed. A novel improved box counting method is proposed by introducing a new parameter η , which is the ratio of fractal object's length in a box over the edge length of the box. For fractals having infinite self similar levels, η is also infinite which has no meaning in mathematics. But the fractals existed in the real world all have their scaling limits, so η is meaningful in practical measurement. Its advantage is proved by the examples in the paper, and its limits are also pointed out. The uncertainty in measuring the fractal dimension using box counting method is discussed, and the corresponding means to overcome them are also proposed. Planar laser induced fluorescence technique was employed to measure the concentration field in the near wake region of circular cylinder. Turbulence non turbulence interfaces were extracted from these images, and the new box counting algorithm is used to measure the fractal dimension of these interfaces. The measured results agree with those of other researchers, and it is found that the fractal dimensions vary little with time in an unsteady flow field.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:AbstractThe notion of recurrent fractal interpolation functions (RFIFs) was introduced by Barnsley et al. [‘Recurrent iterated function systems’, Constr. Approx.5 (1989), 362–378]. Roughly speaking, the graph of an RFIF is the invariant set of a recurrent iterated function system on $\mathbb {R}^2$ . We generalise the definition of RFIFs so that iterated functions in the recurrent system need not be contractive with respect to the first variable. We obtain the box dimensions of all self-affine RFIFs in this general setting.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a generalized affine fractal interpolation function with vertical scaling functions. In this paper, we prove the monotonicity of spectral radii of vertical scaling matrices without additional assumptions. We also obtain the irreducibility of these matrices under certain conditions. By these results, we estimate $\mathrm{dim}_B \Gamma f$, the box dimension of the graph of $f$, by the limits of spectral radii of vertical scaling matrices. We also estimate $\mathrm{dim}_B \Gamma f$ directly by the sum function of vertical scaling functions. As an application, we study the box dimension of the graph of a generalized Weierstrass-type function.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the connection between a class of real number sequences and local fractal functions in terms of fractal dimensions. Under certain conditions, we show that the Box dimension of the graph of a local fractal function with a single unbounded variation point is equal to that of its zero points set plus one. Several concrete examples of such functions whose Box dimension can take any numbers belonging to [1,2] have also been given. This work may provide new approaches to the construction of various local fractal functions with the required Box dimension in the future.

Abstract:We consider fractal graphs invariant by a skew product $F:\mathbb{T}^k\times \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{T}^k\times \mathbb{R}$ of the form $F(x,y)=(Ax, \lambda y+p(x))$ where $0<\lambda<1$, $p\colon\mathbb{T}^k\to\mathbb{R}$ is a $C^{k+1}$ function, and $A$ is an Anosov diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^k$ admitting $k$ distinct eigenvalues with respective eigenvectors forming a basis of $\mathbb{R}^k$. We note that the stable sub-slices can give information of the fractal structure of the graph that is not captured by the box dimension of the graph. Using the results of Kaplan,Mallet-Paret, and York [6], we exhibit conditions on the skew product that ensure the box dimension of the graph is smaller than the sum of the box dimensions of its stable/unstable sub-slices. We prove that these conditions hold for generic functions $p\in C^{k+1}$.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we have done some research studies on the fractal dimension of the sum of two continuous functions with different [math]-dimensions and approximation of [math]-dimensional fractal functions. We first investigate the [math]-dimension of the linear combination of fractal function whose [math]-dimension is [math] and the function satisfying Lipschitz condition is still [math]-dimensional. Then, based on the research of fractal term and the Weierstrass approximation theorem, an approximation of the [math]-dimensional continuous function is given, which is composed of finite triangular series and partial Weierstrass function. In addition, some preliminary results on the approximation of one-dimensional and two-dimensional fractal continuous functions have been given.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. The fractal function approximation is an important branch of fractal theory. Compared with the ordinary function approximation, its advantage is that it can not only improve the accuracy of the approximation, but also maintain the fractional-dimensional characteristics of the objective function. However, in the process of studying the fractal function approximation, it is inevitable to calculate the fractal dimension of the sum function after adding multiple functions. This paper systematically sorts out and computes the fractal dimension of sum functions for different cases, so as to make a good theoretical foundation for fractal function approximation. Finally, considering that the change of aircraft aerodynamic value has fractional dimension characteristics, the use of the fractional function to approximate the aerodynamic numerical function has an inherent advantage, and the use of fractional calculus for aerodynamic modeling can more accurately measure the maximum angle of attack. Therefore, the application of fractional calculus and fractal function approximation theory in aerodynamic numerical modeling has been discussed in detail at the end of this paper, and the corresponding fractional aerodynamic modeling process is also demonstrated.
