Abstract:In this paper, we introduce fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) and linear FIFs on a post critically finite (p.c.f. for short) self-similar set K. We present a sufficient condition such that linear FIFs have finite energy and prove that the solution of Dirichlet problem - Delta(mu)u = f, u vertical bar(partial derivative K) = 0 is a linear FIF on K if f is a linear FIF.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss some basic properties of uniform fractal interpolation functions (FIFs), which is a special class of FIFs, on Sierpinski gasket. We firstly study the min–max property of uniform FIFs. Then we present a necessary and sufficient condition such that uniform FIFs have finite energy. Normal derivative and Laplacian of uniform FIFs are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to calculate the box dimension of a graph of continuous functions. Using this method, we obtain the box dimension formula for linear fractal interpolation functions (FIFs). Furthermore we prove that the fractional integral of a linear FIF is also a linear FIF and in some cases, there exists a linear relationship between the order of fractional integral and box dimension of two linear FIFs.

Abstract:AbstractThe notion of recurrent fractal interpolation functions (RFIFs) was introduced by Barnsley et al. [‘Recurrent iterated function systems’, Constr. Approx.5 (1989), 362–378]. Roughly speaking, the graph of an RFIF is the invariant set of a recurrent iterated function system on $\mathbb {R}^2$ . We generalise the definition of RFIFs so that iterated functions in the recurrent system need not be contractive with respect to the first variable. We obtain the box dimensions of all self-affine RFIFs in this general setting.

Abstract:We provide a general framework to construct fractal interpolation surfaces (FISs) for a prescribed countably infinite data set on a rectangular grid. Using this as a crucial tool, we obtain a parameterized family of bivariate fractal functions simultaneously interpolating and approximating a prescribed bivariate continuous function. Some elementary properties of the associated nonlinear (not necessarily linear) fractal operator are established, thereby initiating the interaction of the notion of fractal interpolation with the theory of nonlinear operators.

We also prove that the mixed Riemann–Liouville fractional integral and derivative of order γ=(p,q);p>0,q>0 , of bivariate FIFs are again bivariate interpolation functions corresponding to some iterated function system (IFS). Abstract:In this paper, we first characterize the finiteness of fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) on post critical finite self-similar sets. Then we study the Laplacian of FIFs with uniform vertical scaling factors on Sierpinski gasket (SG). As an application, we prove that the solution of the following Dirichlet problem on SG is an FIF with uniform vertical scaling factor $\frac{1}{5}$: $\Delta u=0$ on $SG\setminus \{q_1,q_2,q_3\}$, and $u(q_i)=a_i$, $i=1,2,3$, where $q_i$, $i=1,2,3$, are boundary points of SG.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we construct a new kind of weighted recursive iteration function system (IFS) and prove the existence of the unique attractor for the kind of IFS based on the Matkowski fixed point theorem. We confirm that the attractor is a bivariate fractal interpolation surface (FIS), which interpolates a given set of data. In addition, we also provide an upper error estimate of such FISs caused by changes of weights. Finally, we give their box dimension estimates for a specific type of the FISs.

Abstract:In this paper, we aim to construct fractal interpolation function(FIF) on the product of two Sierpiński gaskets. Further, we collect some results regarding smoothness of the constructed FIF. We prove, in particular, that the FIF are Hölder functions under specific conditions. In the final section, we obtain some bounds on the fractal dimension of FIF.

Abstract:Formerly the geometry was based on shapes, but since the last centuries this founding mathematical science deals with transformations, projections and mappings. Projective geometry identifies a line with a single point, like the perspective on the horizon line and, due to this fact, it requires a restructuring of the real mathematical and numerical analysis. In particular, the problem of interpolating data must be refocused. In this paper we define a linear structure along with a metric on a projective space, and prove that the space thus constructed is complete. Then we consider an iterated function system giving rise to a fractal interpolation function of a set of data.

Abstract:Fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) developed through iterated function systems (IFSs) prove more versatile than classical interpolants. However, the applications of FIFs in the domain of `shape preserving interpolation' are not fully addressed so far. Among various techniques available in the classical numerical analysis, rational interpolation schemes are well suited for the shape preservation problems and shape modification analysis. In this paper, the capability of FIFs to generalize smooth classical interpolants, and the effectiveness of rational function models in shape preservation are intertwingly exploited to provide a new solution to the shape preserving interpolation problem in fractal perspective. As a common platform for these two techniques to work together, we introduce rational cubic spline FIFs involving tension parameters for the first time in literature. Suitable conditions on parameters of the associated IFS are developed so that the rational fractal interpolant inherits fundamental shape properties such as monotonicity, convexity, and positivity present in the given data. With some suitable hypotheses on the original function, the convergence analysis of the $\mathcal{C}^1$-rational cubic spline FIF is carried out. Due to the presence of the scaling factors in the rational cubic spline fractal interpolant, our approach generalizes the classical results on the shape preserving rational interpolation by Delbourgo and Gregory [SIAM J. Sci. Stat. Comput., 6 (1985), pp. 967-976]. The effectiveness of the shape preserving interpolation schemes are illustrated with suitably chosen numerical examples and graphs, which support the practical utility of our methods.

Abstract:In this paper,the linear space of a special type of fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) on an interval I is considered. Each FIF in is established from a continuous function on I. We show that, for a finite set of linearly independent continuous functions on I, we get linearly independent FIFs. Then we study a finite-dimensional reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) , and the reproducing kernel for is defined by a basis of . For a given data set , we apply our results to curve fitting problems of minimizing the regularized empirical error based on functions of the form , where and . Here is another finite-dimensional RKHS of some classes of regular continuous functions with the reproducing kernel . We show that the solution function can be written in the form , where and , and the coefficients γ m and α j can be solved by a system of linear equations.

Abstract:This paper presents a description and analysis of a rational cubic spline FIF (RCSFIF) that has two shape parameters in each subinterval when it is defined implicitly. To be precise, we consider the iterated function system (IFS) with $q_n=\frac{P_n}{Q_n}$, $n \in \mathbb{N}_{N-1}$, where $P_n(x)$ are cubic polynomials to be determined through interpolatory conditions of the corresponding FIF and $Q_n(x)$ are preassigned quadratic polynomials each containing two free shape/rationality parameters. We establish the convergence of the proposed RCSFIF $g$ to the original function $\Phi \in \mathcal{C}^3(I)$ with respect to the uniform norm. We also provide the sufficient conditions for an automatic selection of the rational IFS parameters to preserve monotonicity and convexity of a prescribed set of data points. We consider some examples to illustrate the developed fractal interpolation scheme and its shape preserving aspects.

Abstract:This paper sets a theoretical foundation for the applications of the fractal interpolation functions (FIFs). We construct rational cubic spline FIFs (RCSFIFs) with quadratic denominator involving two shape parameters. The elements of the iterated function system (IFS) in each subinterval are identified befittingly so that the graph of the resulting $\mathcal{C}^1$-RCSFIF lies within a prescribed rectangle. These parameters include, in particular, conditions on the positivity of the $\mathcal{C}^1$-RCSFIF. The problem of visualization of constrained data is also addressed when the data is lying above a straight line, the proposed fractal curve is required to lie on the same side of the line. We illustrate our interpolation scheme with some numerical examples
