Abstract:This paper presents a stitching linear-scan method for roundness measurement of small cylinders. Differing from the conventional rotary-scan method by a roundness measuring instrument which suffers from challenges in accurately aligning a cylinder with the rotational datum axis when the cylinder has a small dimension, the stitching linear-scan method, by which the roundness profile of a small cylinder is obtained by stitching a series of arc profiles around the cylinder circumference linearly scanned by a surface form stylus profilometer, makes it easy in alignment of the small cylinder for roundness measurement. Experiments are presented to demonstrate the stitching linear-scan method.

Abstract:A low cost and high precision system which can measure two-degrees-of-freedom straightness simultaneously is proposed based on a laser collimator. In the system, a miniature fiber coupled diode laser generates a collimating beam. The sensitivity of the straightness error measurement is magnified by a factor of 4 compared with the lateral movement of the retro-reflector itself after the multi-reflections. A Renishaw ML10 laser interference measurement system was used to verify the developed system in a series of experiments in the laboratory environment. Experimental results agree with the expected results. The two-dimensional straightness error measurement had linear correlativity close to 1 and the standard one-to-one deviation error was better than 0.32 mu m obtained over a travel range of 600 mu m.

Abstract:A high accuracy method of angular vibration measurement based on a retroreflection film He-Ne laser interferometer and rotary encoder is proposed for the angular vibration calibration. The retroreflection film interferometer is applied at higher frequencies for smaller angle vibration measurement, while the rotary encoder is used at lower frequencies for wider angle vibration measurement. The measurement principle of the retroreflection film interferometer and the rotary encoder are theoretically analysed according to the different vibration frequencies and different vibration angles, and the experimental results from the proposed method have a good consistence with that from the traditional diffraction grating interferometer method in the primary angular vibration calibration. The proposed method presents several advantages in comparison to the diffraction grating interferometer method, including the lower frequency range, the much lower cost, the convenience and flexibility of the use.

Abstract:This paper designed a type of freeform surface roughness measurement bench using parallel-mechanism. The virtual prototype of surface roughness measurement bench has been established. Basic structure parameters and work-space of bench have been calculated according to the program of surface roughness test. An example of bearing outer circle roughness measurement based on Stewart platform has been analysed. From the example of measurement bench it is observed that the designed bench based on Stewart platform can be used as a multi-DOF structure in the freeform surface roughness measurement.

Abstract:To improve the technical performance of home made distortion meter, an active T bridge fundamental frequency suppression circuit was developed, which has high suppression capability for fundamental frequency and low attenuation for harmonics. An automatic frequency tuning method was proposed, and corresponding circuit for implementing this method was designed, which improves the technical level of the distortion meter. The practice proves that the enhanced distortion meter has the attractive qualities such as simple structure, high precision, wide test range, convenient for operation and low price.

Abstract:The measurement method of the global sizes of cylindrical parts based on Talyrond 585LT and the standard ring was proposed. The changing processes from the roundness profiles measured by Talyrond 585LT to the actual roundness profiles was studied for holes and shafts, respectively. The evaluation models of the least-squares diameter, minimum circumscribed diameter, maximum inscribed diameter and minimax diameter of cylindrical parts were given. The roundness profiles of two holes and two shafts were extracted and changed into their corresponding actual roundness profiles. Their global sizes were evaluated, and their measurement uncertainties were analyzed and estimated. The analysis and experiment results showed that the above measuring method can meet the measurement need of the global sizes of cylindrical parts for implementation of ISO 14405-1 in the manufacturing industry.

Abstract:The accelerated bearing life tester modified with micro-flow control valve and position holding directional control vlave is presented. The parameters of the bearing life testing are decided and the measuring and controlling system of the accelerated bearing life tester is developed. The control method of continuity and discontinuity applying to bearing life tester and adjusted parameter PID control is given. The software applying to the accelerated bearing life tester system based on PLC and NI monitor software based on PPI protocol are developed. The result shows that this system has features of 2% control precision and fast-response control.

Abstract:As a fundamental geometric indicator, high precision roundness measurement is the basis evaluation index of cylindrical or spherical parts. In most roundness measurements, the rotation platforms are used to bring certain rotation error to the measurement result. Two-probe method is a typical roundness measurement strategy with error separation technique, coming from three-probe method with low cost, online integration, flexible installation, etc. We developed a roundness measurement system with three chromatic confocal displacement sensors with flexibility and high axial-resolution. As the measurement start, two sets of displacement data are achieved to take part in the frequency calculation. A typical cylindrical workpiece was measured for its roundness, which was very close with the measurement result by an ultra-precision roundness meter. In a word, the chromatic confocal roundness measurement system is feasible to provide high precision roundness with two-probe method.

Abstract:In this paper, a ruby ball stylus is employed as hardware filtering for high-frequency data in the stitching linear scan method for the roundness and diameter measurement of small cylinders (diameter less than 3 mm). The conventional rotary scan method is improper for measuring small cylinders due to the crucial alignment. Thus, the stitching linear scan method is proposed, with which the cross-sectional circle of small cylinders is divided into several arcs to be measured and stitched. Although small cylinders can be measured by this method, the final results of roundness and diameter are affected by the low-accuracy stitching due to the high-frequency data. To address this issue, a ruby ball stylus with a tip radius of 150 mu m is used for eliminating the influence of highfrequency data which is obtained by a diamond stylus with a tip radius of 2 mu m in the stitching linear scan method. Since the measuring force of the ruby ball stylus influences the measurement of the small cylinders very much, a series of new alignments are carried out. Two groups of experiments by ruby ball stylus and diamond stylus have been conducted under the same conditions respectively. Results show that the average matching coefficient of adjacent arc profiles is enhanced by 86% and the repeatability of the ruby ball stylus is better than the diamond stylus.
A Study On Harmonies Suppression In Roundness Measurement

Abstract:One of the most important tasks in roundness measurement is error separation. However the problem of harmonic suppression existing in both multi-orientation method and multi-probe method hinders further improvement of accuracy. Tn this paper, by analyzing the transform function of any kind of separation method, the existence of harmonic suppression can be verified simply and clearly. From the transform function figures, we can see that in the two-orientation method, if the radian turn angle is small enough, harmonic suppression can be neglected. Above idea can be verified by the computer simulation and experiments carrying on roundness measuring machine with a rotating table, which has random dislocation.

Abstract:The high-precision metrological measurement of circular profile is crucial for various rotational parts, essential in precision machining, manufacturing, and assembly. The existing roundness error separation methods often suffer from harmonic suppression issues, limiting the range of separable harmonics and reducing accuracy. This article proposes a roundness error separation method based on time-frequency-domain transformation (TFDT) for parameter optimization to overcome these challenges. By establishing the relationship between separation accuracy and rotation angle error and optimizing parameters accordingly, the method balances error separation accuracy with the separable harmonic range. Theoretical simulations and experimental validations confirm the method's effectiveness. By comparing the separation results under different harmonic separation range requirements with those of the methods currently widely used in the field of roundness metrology, we have validated the effectiveness of this method in balancing separation range and accuracy. When the rotation angle is set to 1.406°, the harmonic suppression-free range expands from [0, 204] undulations per revolution (upr) to [0, 255] upr, representing an increase of approximately 25% compared to single-step rotation error separation technique (SEST). Compared to the SEST method, the deviation of this method from the multistep method is reduced by over 68%, and its standard deviation (STD) is only about 65% of that of the other two methods. This innovative approach provides comprehensive and accurate circular profile data, enabling high-precision roundness error separation across a broad harmonic range. It establishes a robust theoretical basis for advanced measurements in national metrology institutes and key laboratories.

Abstract:Roundness error evaluation software is developed based on two-dimensional circle fitting with least-squares method based on nonlinear optimization with constraints. The local derivative-free optimization algorithms of NLopt can solve nonlinear constraint problems by combining with augmented Lagrangian algorithm. The fitting precision and convergence time of each algorithm are analyzed by calculating the fitting results with same test data to find its advantages and disadvantages. It is shown that each algorithm has different behaviors from others on performance and stability. This work provides a good basis for choosing the appropriate algorithm for roundness error evaluation.

Abstract:This paper describes the testing of transmitted wavefront distortion for Φ3.6 mm×0.5 mm glass parallel flat using the CQG-II shop digital interferometer manufactured by Zhejiang Univ. The interferometer employs the phase-shift fringe scanning digital analysis with its software running in WINDOWS operating system, so that it can measure the optics with maximum aperture of Φ60 mm, while its wavefront distortion has an accuracy of λ/30. Practical shop testing demonstrates that the sampled points within the clear aperture of Φ3.1 mm reach 4200 when a four times optical enlarge system is inserted in the interferometer. Since the system error of interference cavity is PV≤0.028λ for transmitted testing, the interferometer has the good measuring repeatability of PV≤0.03λ during several days. The interferometer has been available for daily use and the microoptical devices whose quality is ensured by the interferometer have been accepted by the PIONEER Co. in Japan.

Abstract:This paper describes a method for measuring and compensating the roundness error of a larger mandrel manufactured by an ultra-precision diamond-turning lathe aimed to obtain a calibration cylinder with a roundness of less than 0.1 μm. The diamond-turning machine has a cross-stacked hydrostatic guideway, produces a cutting depth and feed movement direction, and a dual-spindle system that is firmly connected to the bed. Due to the good repeatability of aerostatic spindles, only in situ rather than online real-time measurements are required. To this end, three high-precision capacitance displacement sensors were utilized to detect the cross-section of the workpiece and the time domain via the three-point error separation technique to separate the roundness error from the rotation motion error. The slow tool servo (STS) cutting technique was employed to compensate for the roundness error, which did not require extra axes, only the excellent dynamic response of the feed axis; hence, the servo control parameters could be suitably adjusted. The experimental results reveal that the low-order harmonic error, often caused by aerostatic spindles, is almost removed completely. For this particular lathe, the experiments indicate that about 60% of the rotational error motion is compensated, and the roundness error is reduced to less than 0.1 μm, which is evaluated by the least-squares circle method.

Abstract:With the continuous popularization of automation in the manufacturing industry and continuous improvement of production efficiency, new requirements have been put forward for the error detection of machine tool. As a new automated detection tool, R-test has been widely studied by scholars. This paper proposes a dynamic test method for R-test, and analyses the influence of three main error sources of servo error, pitch error and reading error. The corresponding elimination methods are also introduced. An experiment on a double turntable machine tool was conducted to verify the analysis. In addition, the selection of feed rate and initial position in circle test is also studied.

Abstract:In this study, three-probe error separation was developed with three chromatic confocal displacement sensors for roundness measurement. Here, the harmonic suppression is discussed first to set suitable orientation angles among three sensors. Monte Carlo simulation is utilized to test the error separation and optimize the orientation angles and off-axial distance. The experimental setup is established using chromatic confocal sensors with a precise rotary platform. The experimental results show that the measured roundness with an orientation-angle combination of (0°, 90.1°, and 178.6°) is much better than that of another nonoptimal selection (0°, 90.4°, and 177.4°). The roundness error is only 0.7% between the proposed measurement system and an expensive ultraprecision roundness meter. Furthermore, it is proven that the eccentricity distance should be decreased as small as possible to improve the measurement accuracy. In sum, this paper proposes a feasible method for roundness measurement with reliable simulations, easily integrated sensors, and an ordinary precision rotary platform.

Abstract:For solving the problems of roundness error assessment methods with profound theory , complex computation ,low detection efficiency and inapplicable to sample points with large capacity in engineering application ,a new method was proposed based on error transformation and image domain . The method transformed the roundness errors from the field measurements to the image domain and made it meet the requirements of error estimation .The method took the least square circle as the initi-ative round to seek the “minimum in maximum” of its radius or radius difference .And then through small scale translation of the least square circle and getting the translation planning coordinate by ge-netic algorithm ,the ideal circle after translation and roundness error value were obtained .Experimen-tal results of a certain type of part show that the roundness error can be evaluated effectively and ex-actly by using this method because it is very close to the results measured by coordinate measuring machine .
