Abstract:A cooling system consisting of several heat exchange modules is a necessary part of an automobile, and its performance has a direct effect on a vehicle’s energy consumption. Heat exchangers, such as a charged air cooler （CAC）, radiator, oil cooler, or condenser have different structures and can be arranged in various orders, and each combination may produce different effects because of interactions among them. In this study, we aimed to explore the principles governing interactions among adjacent heat exchangers in a cooling system, using numerical simulation and experimental technology. 3D models with different combinations were developed, compared, and analyzed comprehensively. A wind tunnel test platform was constructed to validate the computational results. We found that the heat dissipation of the modules was affected slightly by their relative position （the rules basically comply with the field synergy principle）, but was independent of the modules’ spacing within a certain distance range. The heat dissipation of one module could be effectively improved by restructuring, but with a penalty of higher resistance. However, the negative effect on the downstream module was much less than expected. The results indicated that the intensity of heat transfer depends not only on the average temperature difference between cold and hot mediums, but also on the temperature distribution.

Abstract:With the UG software,the three-dimensional model of gasoline engine was built.With the FLUENT software,the flow field distribution,heat exchange coefficient distribution and pressure drop of internal cooling water were analyzed,the optimization of cooling jacket was put forward and finally the results before and after the optimization were compared.With the flow and heat transfer of original cooling jacket,the cooling in intake side of cylinder head was well-distributed,but the cooling of first and second cylinder block and third and fourth cylinder head in exhaust side was poor.Through improving the cooling jacket,the heat exchange ability was greatly improved.

Abstract:Aiming at the flow and temperature distribution,a 3D simulation model of the engine compartment of a commercial vehicle was established in FLUENT.The energy distribution under the full load condition and the curve of cooling module's flow characteristics,which were obtained separately through engine thermal balance test and vehicle road test,were used as the boundary conditions for simulation model.The simulation results verified by the vehicle road test indicate that the highest temperature of the cooling wind flow occurred at the top of the engine,mainly for the reason that the cooling module and the engine compartment are arranged in parallel and isolated by clapboard,and the shape of cooling wind tunnel is U.The results also indicate that the heat reflux of cooling wind could be controlled effectively because of the wind tunnel's isolation layout.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical heat transfer (NHT) study of flow and heat transfer on construction machinery detached cooling system were presented. Four detached cooling system numerical models were created by three-dimensional entity fan and heat exchanger models, and the analyses of fluid flow and heat transfer as well as fan matching were carried out. The results show that with the same heat exchangers’ arrangement, the scheme with induced fan has a lower power consumption; with the same fan configuration, the scheme with orthogonal heat exchangers has a better thermal performance. Finally, the comprehensive performances of these 4 detached cooling systems were evaluated with the coefficient of performance (Q/W) and the matching curves of cooling system, so the schemes with induced fan or orthogonal heat exchangers is the most energy saving one.

Abstract:The coupled model of a four-cylinder internal combustion engine and a dash panel was constructed to analyze the relationship between the engine noise and interior noise of an automobile. Finite element analysis, flexible multi-body dynamics, and boundary element analysis were integrated to obtain the tetrahedron-element models, structural vibration response, and radiated noise,respectively. The accuracy of the finite-element model of the engine was validated by modal analysis via single-input multi-output technology, while the dash panel was validated by sound transmission loss experiment. The block was optimized to reduce the radiated acoustic power from the engine surface. The acoustic transfer path between the engine cabin and passenger compartment was then established. The coupled analysis results reveal that the interior noise is optimized due to the engine noise reduction.

Abstract:The current design process of the two automotive air conditioning devices (condenser and evaporator) mainly use a large number of experiments which are very time-consuming. In view of this flaw, this paper presents a structurized procedure to develop the simulation platform of the two devices. Firstly, the physical and mathematical models of the two devices were established. The heat transfer situation was simulated to exclude unreasonable model. Secondly, the finite element analysis of the two devices was carried on using FLUENT. The simulated model was constantly modified by comparing the results with that of the mathematical model. In this study, FLUENT numerical analysis about the heat transfer and flow characteristics was taken on the model under four conditions. The conclusion obtained from that had great significance for the design. Finally, simulation system of the two devices was developed by the tool of MATLAB programming language and GUI design module. This simulation system can replace actual experiments by the way of analog computation. It can not only simulate performance of the system on different initial conditions to provide a decision-making basis for the optimal design of condenser and evaporator, but also shorten design cycles.

Abstract:CFD/CHT simulations have been widely used in simulating cross flow compact heat exchangers, but the calculating accuracy is commonly limited. The multi-scale thermal analysis approach was adopted to study an intercooler, one of the representative examples of cross flow heat exchangers in automotive cooling systems. With the application of mesh refinement and datum interpolation technique, the inside flow and heat transfer mechanism were analyzed, the pressure and temperature data were also calculated. The model was validated with experimental data based on wind tunnel tests, and the results show that the multi-scale coupled calculation is in good agreement with experimental values, especially in the heat transfer simulations. The research of the inside flow and heat transfer mechanism is capable of providing a basis for optimization of compact heat exchangers.

Abstract:The physical and mathematical model of parallel flow automotive air condition condenser was built based on the analysis of its structure and operating characteristics; then the mathematical model was verified and optimized through finite element analysis and running experiments. The VB programming system was used to do Solidworks pro-development and condenser parameterization design module was built. Finally a condenser design and study platform facing to the heat transfer performance and structure with infinite element simulation and numerical simulation was realized.

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to develop a 3D CFD program which can be used by the development engineer to analyze the performance of the vehicle cooling system.There is a demand for new vehicles to be made in shorter product development cycles while continuously improving the vehicle’s performance and quality. These demands accelerate the use of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools for vehicle test simulations. For engine cooling, it is very important to use CFD tools for the prediction of front end airflow pattern. However, the geometry of a vehicle’s front end and underbody region are extremely complex. From this study, the performance of the automotive cooling system can be predicted and also compared with experimental data. That is, a method to predict the coolant inlet temperature of the radiator is presented. This method includes predicting the coolant and air flow patterns in front of the condenser and radiator in a real vehicle model. This method employed the SIMPLE and SIP numerical methods to solve the Navier–Stokes equations for incompressible and three-dimensional fluid motion. The standard k–ε turbulence model was applied and the law of wall was applied to the wall boundary. For the validation of the developed method, numerous simulations were completed in accordance with various conditions and the results were compared with existing experimental data.

Experiments on match optimization of underhood cooling module

Abstract:To improve the design and match of commercial vehicle cooling system,a cooling module matching method based on underhood front module test in wind tunnel was proposed.And to a commercial vehicle for the prototype,it has been verified.The underhood front module was composed of air duct parts' modle,A/C condencer,charge air cooler(CAC) and radiator in four rows.It was tested in a wind tunnel test stand according to design requirement.The design and match of cooling module and fan were finished according to the wind test result.Finally the cooling system performance was trialed by the road test.The test results showed that when the air speed is 4.0-10.0 m/s,the single radiator's pressure drop is 55%-58% of the total number,and the air duct parts' pressure drop influence is about 3%-5%.The module's heat dissipating capacity meets the system requirement at rated load and with the effective wind speed being 7.0 m/s.The cooling system,which was designed by this method,was of good performance on road.The front end cooling module testing is propitious to improve the system design precision and save energy.

Abstract:The design of a novel hybrid system of continuous solar solid adsorption refrigeration and heating was proposed. The computer simulation and analysis were made and the system performance was described. The simulation results can be used for parameter optimization of prototype of this system. Compared with the inter-mediate solar solid adsorption refrigeration system, this system has the advantages of continuous rerigeration together with heat supply and high energy utilization rate.

Abstract:This paper optimized the design of the cooling fans of a light-duty diesel engine through numerical simulation. Using Fluent as a platform, a detailed Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate both the aerodynamic and the acoustics performance. The model developed was validated against experimental data obtained in this research. The validated model was then used to optimize the design of the cooling fan aiming to minimize the operation noise. With the guarantee of cooling performances, the aerodynamic noise of the two fans has been successfully reduced.

Abstract:A battery cooling system model of electric vehicle was established. The system model consists of a battery pack, a pump, a radiator, and a fan. A cooling plate was used to cool the battery pack, and the coolant flow rate in the cooling plate was controlled by the pump. The heat in the battery cooling system was released into the ambient air through the radiator. A finite element analysis model of the cooling plate was established to calculate the pressure drop of the cooling plate. A coupled dynamics model of the battery pack-radiator cooling system was established to simulate the temperature of the battery pack during charging and discharging. Tests were carried out to obtain the pressure drop of the cooling plate and the temperature of the battery pack under different working conditions. The simulation results and test results were compared and analyzed, and the accuracy of the models were verified. The effects of coolant flow rate and radiator wind speed on the liquid cooling process of the battery pack were analyzed.

Abstract:Charged air coolers (CAC) are the major components in automotive turbo-charging system. Fin parameters play an important role which affect thermal-hydraulic performances significantly. According to typical fin structures, this paper carried out the matching design of hotside and coldside flow channels in CACs. Based on numerical simulation results, the fluid flow and heat transfer performances of 9 matched CACS were comprehensively evaluated and thus the optimal structure was determined. The results are consistent with engineering practices. This design method can reduce CAC research costs and shorten development period and offer guidance for the designing and manufacturing of CACs.

Abstract:Performance analyses of separate components of an automobile air conditioning system have been carried out under various operating conditions. The air conditioning system consists of a laminated type evaporator, a swash plate type compressor, a parallel flow type condenser, a receiver drier and an externally equalized thermostatic expansion valve. A computer program for performance analysis of the laminated type evaporator has been developed on the basis of the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop which were obtained experimentally. A computer program for performance analysis of the parallel flow type condenser, using an empirical equation for the heat transfer coefficient, has been developed, which demonstrates that the predicted condensing capacity agrees very well with the experimental data. Then, a model for combining the performance analysis programs of separate components of an automobile air conditioning system is proposed, which simulates very well the performance of the integrated automobile air conditioning system. Further, the effects of condenser size and refrigerant charge on the performance of the integrated automobile air conditioning system are discussed.

Abstract:The thesis simulates the engine?s installation and uses conditions in the whole vehicle, such as the water tank, fan, the engine?s arrangement in the engine room, accessories and pipe-line connections, etc. to build a test bench for the engine thermal management system. According to the thermal management simulation analysis software KULI modelling, the article designs the bench test conditions according to the parameter input requirements of the thermal management simulation analysis software. The accuracy of the model is verified by comparing simulation and test data, and the NEDC driving cycle is used to simulate the performance of the vehicle cooling system to guide the selection and matching of thermal management system components.

Abstract:New energy vehicles have better clean and environmental protection characteristics than traditional fuel vehicles. The new energy engine cooling technology is critical in the design of new energy vehicles. This paper used one-and three-way joint simulation methods to simulate the refrigeration system of new energy vehicles. Firstly, a k-ε turbulent flow model for the cooling pump flow field is established based on the principle of computational fluid dynamics. Then, the CFD commercial fluid analysis software FLUENT is used to simulate the flow field of the cooling pump under different inlet flow conditions. This paper proposes an optimization scheme for new energy vehicle engines’ “boiling” phenomenon under high temperatures and long-time climbing conditions. The simulation results show that changing the radiator’s structure and adjusting the thermostat’s parameters can solve the problem of a “boiling pot.” The optimized new energy vehicle engine can maintain a better operating temperature range. The algorithm model can reference each cryogenic system component hardware selection and control strategy in the new energy vehicle’s engine.

Abstract:The aircraft air-conditioning system, which consumes the engine bleed air to provide stable and comfort environment for passengers, has a high demand of system reliability and energy efficiency. For analyzing system performance and control effect under a wide range of operating scenarios, this paper presents a dynamic model of the aircraft air-conditioning system. A pressure-node based method is proposed to decouple the system architecture, and a modelling framework is established with reflecting the interdependencies between component-level modules. Dynamic sub-models including pressure nodes, heat exchangers and the air cycle machine are built to predict all major dynamics in the system. The model is verified by the measured data of an airborne testing. The predicted temperatures show good agreement with the measured data, of which the average deviations at the compressor outlet and system outlet are 4.60 °C and 3.49 °C, respectively. The effectivity of the proposed model is investigated under various conditions, including different control signal inputs, standard pull up/pull down conditions and an entire flight case. The simulation results indicate that the model can be successfully applied for a wide range of aircraft operating scenarios, and provide insight towards control design and fault detection of the aircraft air-conditioning system.

Abstract:A charged air cooler (CAC) with good thermal-hydraulic performances is the guarantee for vehicular turbo charged air system. Mullti-porus media model is adopted in this study to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performance of a CAC and the effect of its structure on the performance. The detailed fin structure can be simplified and thus computational workload can be reduced greatly by this way, and the overall thermal-hydraulic performance investigation of a CAC is possible. The study results show that the inlet and outlet locations of hot-channel have a significant effect on thermal-hydraulic performance and through changing the locations, heat transfer can be enhanced and flow resistance can be reduced.

Abstract:With the automotive air-conditioning industry aiming at higher levels of quality, cost effectiveness and a short time to market, the need for simulation is at an all time high. In the present work, the use of dynamics analysis is proposed in the simulation of the automobile air conditioning condenser assembly for the vibration loads. The condenser assembly has been analyzed using the standard testing conditions. The results revealed that the components of condenser assembly may fail due to resonance in dynamic analysis. Thereafter, the condenser assembly was optimized, resulting in a 2 % reduction in mass.
