Abstract:ZrO2 whiskers have been successfully synthesized at temperature of 1800 °C and high pressure of 15 GPa, using ZrO2 powder as the starting material. After a high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) process, a bunch of long and idiomorphic ZrO2 whiskers are obtained. The grown whiskers look like needles, and have silky luster. They are colorless and transparent, and exhibit hexagonal, triangular, quadrilateral, and irregular shaped cross sections. Through this HPHT method, whiskers with various diameters from 10 to 20 μm, and length from 200 to 1000 μm can be produced. The aspect ratio of length to diameter can be from 10 to 100. Growth mechanism of the ZrO2 whiskers prepared under HPHT conditions are discussed, and the ZrO2 whiskers growth may undergo a vapor–solid process.

Abstract:Well-aligned zinc oxide whiskers with high density were successfully prepared on amorphous substrate by atmospheric metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the ZnO whiskers were wurtzite crystal structure, and grew non-epitaxially on glass substrate along ZnO [0001] direction. ZnO whiskers with uniform distributions in their diameters and lengths grew vertically on the amorphous substrate. The effects of deposition conditions and the growth mechanism of ZnO whiskers by MOCVD were discussed. Both the growth habit and the growth circumstance significantly affected the morphology of the whiskers.

Abstract:Large-scale aligned ZnO nanowires are grown uniformly on silicon substrates covered with polycrystalline ZnO films by carbothermal route, without employing any metal catalysts and vacuum system. The products collected from the different temperature zones were characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found the (001) oriented single crystal ZnO nanowires with different diameters could be fabricated. It is suggested that the ZnO films with smaller grain sizes may offer the nucleation centers for the formation of ZnO nanowires.

Abstract:Hexagonal ZnO group whiskers synthesized from Zn(NH3)42+ precursor at 145°C in a structure-directing template solvent (2.5%v/v alcohol) show strong photoluminescence at 409 and 420nm. FE-SEM and TEM observation reveals that the ZnO group whiskers consist of uniform pencil-like whiskers with the diameter of around 1.5μm and the length of up to 6μm.

Abstract:The cluster and rod-like ZnO whiskers were obtained via a simple hydrothermal route in the presence of sodium succinate hexahydrate (Na2C4H4O4·6H2O) at 180 °C for 24 h by using zinc salts and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4·H2O). The microstructures of the as-synthesized samples were investigated by means of scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscopes and X-ray diffraction. The cluster whiskers with typical widths of about 300 nm possess hexagonal structure. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of the whiskers show a strong UV emission at 397 nm, as well as a blue emission at 451 and 466 nm.

Abstract:ZnO nanowires and nanowhiskers were prepared via a novel approach in the presence of surfactant. Several techniques confirmed that the nanostructures are single crystalline with the growth direction along the [101] axis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy also showed that typical peak of ZnO nanostructure is shifted to high frequency.

Abstract:Highly oriented ZnO whiskers were prepared on glass substrates by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at atmospheric pressure. X-ray diffraction result reveals that ZnO whiskers grow along ［0001］ direction and the crystal structure of ZnO is of wurtzite type. Scanning electron microscopic observations show that the length and shape of the whiskers are almost uniform. The diameters range from 100 to 800nm ,and the curvature radius of the whisker tip is about 50nm or even less. The chemical reaction process during the preparation of whiskers is discussed and a simple growth model of ZnO whisker deposited by MOCVD is proposed.

Abstract:A high soluble and stable epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) precursor is synthesized at below room temperature to efficiently prepare ZnO whiskers. The experimental results indicate that the formation of ZnO whiskers is carried out mainly via two steps: the formation of ZnO seeds from epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) via the in situ solid conversion, and the following growth of whiskers via dissolution-precipitation route. The decrease of temperature from 25 to 5 degree celsius promotes the formation of epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) with higher solubility and stability, which balances the conversion and dissolution rates of precursor. The Rietveld refinement, DFT calculations and MD simulations reveal that the primary reason for these characteristics is the expansion of e-Zn(OH)(2) lattice due to temperature, causing difficulties in the dehydration of adjacent OH. Simultaneously, the larger specific surface area favors the dissolution of epsilon-Zn(OH)(2). Based on this precursor, well-dispersed ZnO whiskers with 9.82 mu m in length, 242.38 nm in diameter, and an average aspect ratio of 41 are successfully synthesized through a SDSN-assisted hydrothermal process at 80 degree celsius. The process has an extremely high solid content of 2.5% (mass ratio of ZnO to solution) and an overall yield of 92%, which offers a new approach for the scaled synthesis of high aspect ratio ZnO whiskers by liquid-phase method.

Abstract:Two-dimensional ZnO nanowall networks were grown on ZnO-coated silicon by thermal evaporation at low temperature without catalysts or additives. All of the results from scanning electronic spectroscope, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering confirmed that the ZnO nanowalls were vertically aligned and c-axis oriented. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectra showed a dominated UV peak at 378nm, and a much suppressed orange emission centered at ∼590nm. This demonstrates fairly good crystal quality and optical properties of the product. A possible three-step, zinc vapor-controlled process was proposed to explain the growth of well-aligned ZnO nanowall networks. The pre-coated ZnO template layer plays a key role during the synthesis process, which guides the growth direction of the synthesized products.

Abstract:ZnO nanorod arrays (ZNAs) were prepared via a two-step seeding and solution hydrothermal growth process. Effects of preparing parameters such as seed layer, colloid concentration, substrate and precursor concentration, on the alignment control of ZNAs were systematically investigated. The deviation angle of ZnO nanorods was measured to evaluate the alignment of arrays. Results show that seed layer not only controls the vertical orientation of ZNAs, but also the compactness of ZNAs. Altering colloid concentration and substrate can influence the microstructure of ZnO seed layer and affect the ordered alignment of ZNAs. The precursor concentration has an insignificant effect on the alignment of ZNAs but has great impact on the morphology of ZNAs. Alignment-controlled and well-aligned ZnO nanorods with different diameter and aspect ratio can be obtained by properly controlling the preparing parameters. A growth mechanism was proposed for the growth of ZnO nanorods.

Abstract:The influence of Na2SO4 on the formation of ZnO whiskers was investigated in this paper. ZnO whiskers with aspect ratios of up to 50 were synthesized by dissolving epsilon-Zn(OH)(2) precursor in NaOH/Na2SO4 solution at room temperature, followed by aging of the resulting solution at 140 degrees C for 6h. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that SO42- ions were primarily adsorbed on the (1 0 0) plane of the ZnO whiskers via an outer-sphere complex configuration (O-H center dot center dot center dot O), thereby promoting the one-dimensional growth of ZnO whiskers along the c-axis. Hydrothermal Synthesis of Well-Aligned ZnO Nanorod Arrays on Silicon

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays were fabricated on ZnO:Al seeded Si substrates with various reaction temperatures using a low temperature hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of ZnO nanorod arrays were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It reveals that the ZnO nanorods grow vertically on Si surface with (002) preferential orientation. The transmittance spectra show the ZnO nanorod arrays fabricated at low temperatures have high transmittance in the visible region and decrease with reaction temperature increasing. Moreover, the same trend was also observed in the reflectance spectra of the ZnO nanorod arrays. The optimal reaction temperature is of 120 degrees C for ZnO nanorod arrays with high transmittance (similar to 80%) and low reflectance (similar to 10%) in the visible region. The superior optical properties make ZnO nanorod arrays promising for applications as transparent electrodes.

Abstract:Well-aligned small-diameter ZnO nanowire arrays have been synthesized on Si wafers pre-coated with c-oriented ZnO thin films by a catalyst-free thermal evaporation method. The morphology of the products has been found to be greatly affected by the oxygen flow rate. The self-catalyzed VLS mechanism is proposed to interpret the growth of the ZnO nanowires and the change in the product morphology. Classical nucleation theory is employed to analyze the growth process of the ZnO nanowires, and Zn vapor supersaturation is proposed to be a key factor to affect the diameter and the areal density of the ZnO nanowires. The average diameter of the ZnO nanowires can be finely controlled in the range of 12-31 nm by controlling the oxygen flow rate and hence the Zn vapor supersaturation. This result is consistent with our theoretical prediction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were performed to characterize the stoichiometry of nanowires with various average diameters. It also revealed that there are many OH species on the nanowire surface. Photoluminescence measurements showed that the deep-level emission of the nanowires with average diameter of 12 nm peaks in the yellow region, which may be attributed to the presence of OH species and surface effects.

Abstract:ZnO is a wide band gap oxide semiconductor material with important and potential applications in sensor, transducer, surface acoustic wave devices, and optoelectronic devices, etc. In the past several years, various methods have been developed for synthesizing the ZnO nanowires. Among these methods, Vapor- liquid-solid (VLS) growth mode is widely used because it does not demand complex apparatus or sophisticated techniques and one can easily synthesized the ZnO nanowires by the catalyzing process of the metal liquid drop in the tip of the nanowires. In this work, based on the VLS growth mechanism, we successfully prepared the twin-crystal Sn catalysted ZnO nanowires with uniform shape and wurtzite structure by a simple method of thermal evaporation of a mixture of SnO powder and Zn powder under the pure N_2 flow and O_2 flow. The pu- rity, composition, microstructrue and crystallinity of the as-prepared ZnO twin-crystal nanowires were investigated by XRD, HRTEM, SEM and SAED. According to SEM images, we observed that the as-synthesized ZnO nanowires were straight and uniform, and were 100~200 nm in diameter and several tens of micrometers in length, some even reaching millimeter level. TEM images and element analysis results verified that the spherical particle on the top of the nanowire was tin metal grain which played the role of catalyst in the process of nanowire growth. These suggested that the growth of ZnO twin-crystal nanowires was controlled by VLS mechanism. HRTEM images confirmed the twin-crystal structure of the nanowires. According to the SAED images, we made sure that the ZnO twin-crystal nanowires grew along [0110] direction and the twin-crystal plane was (101-3). The relationship between the twin-crystal lattice was analyzed by the dark field images and the bright field images. We also explained the VLS growth mechanism of the nanowires.

Abstract:ZnO whiskers with a length of 30–40 (m and a diameter of about 1 (m were synthesized by co-precipitation of ZnSO4 and Na2CO3 solution at room temperature followed by hydrothermal treatment of the as-prepared Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 precursor at 160 °C for 6 h. Abstract:High-density ZnO nanowires (ZnONWs) were aligned onto Au-catalyzed Si substrate through a simple low-temperature physical vapor deposition method. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations, x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and photoluminescence spectra showed that the ZnONWs were single-crystalline, with a hexagonal wurzite structure. All of the results inferred from the SEM observations, the XRD rocking curves, and the Raman spectra for the investigated samples confirm that the ZnONWs are well aligned and c-axis oriented. The Raman spectra also indicated that the ZnONWs on Si substrates are under the biaxial compressive stress. Since it takes the advantage of low-cost, easily controlled deposition spot (due to the selective deposition trait of the Au layer), potential for scale-up production, and ability to integrate with Si substrate, this technique has a potential in future for fabricating the ZnONW array-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Hexagonally well-faceted ZnO nanowire arrays were successfully aligned to Si wafers using a metal-catalyst-free physical vapour deposition method at 500degreesC. The ZnO nanowires prepared using the metal-catalyst-free approach are single-crystalline and of high-purity. The one-dimensional growth of these nanowires with an average diameter of 100 nm follows the c axis direction of wurtzite ZnO. The as-synthesized nanowire arrays on Si wafers could offer novel opportunities for both fundamental research and technological applications.

Abstract:SiC-AlN solid solution whiskers have been synthesized by heating a mixture of alpha-Si3N4, Al2O3, MgO, and Y2O3 in a graphite crucible in a N-2 atmosphere. The as-synthesized whiskers are well-crystallized with a width of 0.5-5 mu m and a length of 0.1-1 mm. According to the experimental and thermodynamical calculation results, the formation mechanism of SiC-AlN solid solution is discussed. It is proposed that the SiC-AlN whiskers are produced via the vapor-solid (VS) process.

Abstract:Tungsten suboxide W18O49 nanowhiskers is a material of great interest due to its potential high-end applications in electronics, near-infrared light shielding, catalysis, and gas sensing. The present study introduces three main approaches for the fundamental understanding of W18O49 nanowhisker growth and structure. Firstly, W¬18O49 nanowhiskers were grown from WO3/a SiO2¬ nanofibers in-situ in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) utilizing a specially designed micro-reactor (uReactor). It was found that irradiation by the electron beam (e-beam) slows the growth kinetics of the W18O49 nanowhisker markedly. Following this, an in-situ¬ TEM study led to some new fundamental understanding of the growth mode of the crystal shear planes in the W¬18O49 nanowhisker and the formation of domain (bundle) structure. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM) analysis of a cross-sectioned W18O¬49 nanowhisker revealed the well-documented pentagonal Magnéli columns and hexagonal channels characteristics for this phase. Furthermore, a highly crystalline and oriented domain structure and previously unreported mixed structural arrangement of tungsten oxide polyhedrons were analyzed. The tungsten oxide phases found in the cross-section of the W18O49 nanowhisker were analyzed by nanodiffraction and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), which was discussed and compared in the light of theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) method. Finally, the knowledge gained from the in-situ SEM and TEM experiments was valorized in developing a multigram synthesis of W18O49/a-SiO2 urchin-like nanofibers in a flow reactor.

Abstract:Two kinds of β-SiAlON nanostructure whiskers, rod-like and wool-like whiskers, were synthesized by pressure-less sintering method at 1773 K for 5 hours. The whiskers synthesized were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and high-resolution electron microscope (HREM) techniques. It was found that diameter distribution of rod-like whiskers was about 80–250 nm, while it was about 45–55 nm in diameter for the wool-like whiskers. The growth mechanisms of β-SiAlON nanostructure whiskers are discussed by the vapor-solid (VS) and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanisms, respectively.
