Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:For given set of $m$ positive numbers satisfying the conditions: $$ a_1 \geq a_2 \geq , ... \geq a_m \geq 0, $$ the inequality $$ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a^r_s \geq \left[ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a_s\right]^r, \quad r > 1, $$ was proved by H. Weinberger. The generalization of Weinberger's result takes the form $$ \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}f(a_s) \geq f\left( \sum_{s=1}^{m} (-1)^{s-1}a_s\right), $$ where $f$ is a convex function satisfying the condition $f(0)\leq 0 $. The condition $f(0)\geq 0 $ in the generalization proposed by Bellman was corrected by Olkin as $f(0) \leq 0 $. Bellman gave only a graphical proof for differentiable convex functions. In this paper, we give a mathematical proof for the generalized inequality including the importance of the condition $f(0)\leq 0$. We introduce a set $\mathcal{W}$ of functions so that functions in the intersection of $\mathcal{W}$ and the set of all convex functions are the ones that are desirable in the generalization. In addition, we give a proof of Szegö's inequality which applies to sums with odd number of terms.

Abstract:By using the generalized Holder inequality and property of the two - weight, the two -weight weak reverse H(o)lder inequality of solutions to the A - harmonic equation of the form d* A ( x, dω)= 0 is proved. As applications of the local result, the global case on domain Ω is obtained by properties of the Whitney covers. These results can be considered as generalizations of the responding classical inequalities, and can be used to estimate integrals of the differential forms.

In particular, we shall prove sufficient and necessary conditions for generalized Hölder's inequality in those spaces. One of the keys to prove our results is to estimate the norms of characteristic sequences in \mathbb{R}.

Abstract:Concentration inequalities are indispensable tools for studying the generalization capacity of learning models. Hoeffding's and McDiarmid's inequalities are commonly used, giving bounds independent of the data distribution. Although this makes them widely applicable, a drawback is that the bounds can be too loose in some specific cases. Although efforts have been devoted to improving the bounds, we find that the bounds can be further tightened in some distribution-dependent scenarios and conditions for the inequalities can be relaxed. In particular, we propose four types of conditions for probabilistic boundedness and bounded differences, and derive several distribution-dependent extensions of Hoeffding's and McDiarmid's inequalities. These extensions provide bounds for functions not satisfying the conditions of the existing inequalities, and in some special cases, tighter bounds. Furthermore, we obtain generalization bounds for unbounded and hierarchy-bounded loss functions. Finally we discuss the potential applications of our extensions to learning theory.

Abstract:The classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality, known as an interpolation inequality, involves Lebesgue norms of functions and their derivatives. We established an interpolation lemma to connect Lebesgue and Hölder spaces, thus extending the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. This extension involved substituting arbitrary Sobolev norms with appropriate Hölder norms, allowing for a wider range of applicable parameters in the inequality.
