Abstract:The problem of investigating the nonlinear acoustic waves in stepped acoustic resonators is treated theoretically. A perturbation scheme that combines the method of multi-scale expansion yields a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations for deriving an analytical model to describe the resonant oscillations. The nonlinear sound pressure in stepped resonator is predicted with accuracy up to the second-order terms of a small-amplitude parameter [Formula: see text]. The pressure amplitudes and waveforms at the closed end of stepped resonators with different size parameters are investigated by the derived analytical model and qualitatively compared with the measured results in experiment. The qualitative comparison of calculated and measured results shows good agreement. The results suggest that the sound pressure generated in stepped resonators with different size parameters may be very different. Not all stepped resonators can generate high-amplitude and low-distortion standing waves. The derived analytical model can be used to qualitatively study the nonlinear acoustic waves in stepped acoustic resonators and design suitable tube dimensions for resonant macrosonic synthesis.

Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:An acoustic superlattice LiNbO3 crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was fabricated by introducing a periodic electric current through the solid–liquid interface during the crystal growing process. The domain morphology of an as-grown crystal was observed with a scanning electron microscope, and was found to be of good periodicity. A light diffraction experiment indicated that there was a periodic fluctuation of the dielectric constant along the crystal’s growing direction. Using the “crossed field” scheme, a 340 MHz ultrasonic was excited in the crystal, which means that the acoustic superlattice is suitable for constructing high-frequency bulk-wave acoustic devices.
Theory of Light Scattering by Longitudinal-Acoustic Phonons in Superlattices.

Abstract:We study the scattering of light by longitudinal-acoustic phonons propagating along the axis of an infinite superlattice. In contrast to previous works, we take into account not only the difference between the acoustic and photoelastic parameters of the two media, but also the difference between their refractive indexes. In this case the incident and scattered light in the superlattice are represented by Bloch waves instead of plane waves. The scattering intensities, calculated in closed form by using a transfer-matrix method, are then valid for any value of the scattering wave vector q and not limited to q values small compared with the size of the Brillouin zone, \ensuremath{\pi}/D. The peak intensities are discussed for GaAs-AlAs superlattices as functions of the composition, period, and photoelastic parameters. The results may show noticeable differences with those of the previous works, especially for q near the boundaries of the successive Brillouin zones.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:The effect of asymmetry of boundary conditions on the acoustic properties of an acoustic superlattice transducer is studied theoretically. The resonance frequency is influenced by the thickness unequality of the positive and negative domains. This may be used to tailor the property of the ASL transducer.

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we have employed a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-like transmission enhancement.

Abstract:In this letter theoretical calculations and experimental results of ultrasonic generation and detection up to 800 MHz using an acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals are reported. The experiment is in good agreement with theory. Transducers with an insertion loss of nearly 0 dB at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been made.

Abstract:It is shown that superlattice structures undergo strong optical resonances near Bragg incidence, characterized by high energy density gains between the boundaries of the superlattice. These resonances actually correspond to antiresonances of the reflectivity R. The variations of R with the incident wavelength have been investigated with a Ti: sapphire tunable laser source and a good agreement between theory and experiment has been found. Besides, one can take advantage of this resonance to increase the backscattering of light by ultrasonic waves in superlattices, which occurs owing to the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector.

Abstract:The relationship between the resonance frequency and the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals has been obtained by analysis of the excitation and propagation of elastic waves in this kind of material with which high‐frequency resonance in the range of 500–800 MHz has been realized experimentally. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones. The applications of acoustic devices operating at frequencies high above 500 MHz are to be expected.
Acoustic Attenuation and Optical-Absorption Effects on Light Scattering by Acoustic Phonons in Superlattices.

Abstract:The effects of acoustical attenuation and optical absorption on light scattering by acoustic phonons propagating along the superlattice axis are theoretically analyzed and experimentally probed in GaAs/AlAs and Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattices. It is shown that the linewidth of the acoustic modes undergoes a clear narrowing near the Brillouin-zone edge due to the decrease of the group velocity of the phonons. It is also demonstrated that the damping of the acoustic waves makes the high-frequency modes at the Brillouin-zone edge shift into the ``forbidden gaps'' which have been evidenced in the case of lossless media. We have observed such a shift in a Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattice sample at phonon energies around 14 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for which the acoustic attenuation can no longer be neglected. It is also shown that the effects of optical absorption on the relative intensity of the folded acoustic modes are particularly sensitive in the condition where the incident light is Bragg reflected by the interfaces. This intensity behavior has been observed in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice and agrees with the theoretical analysis.

The phase velocity of the Rayleigh mode has been measured on superlattices with different thicknesses of the a-Si:H layer. The results obtained have been interpreted in terms of the effective medium model within the elastic continuum approximation; no anomalous behavior is observed, in contrast with previous ultrasonic measurements in superlattice with a minor nitrogen content.

Abstract:In this paper, an FDTD-based numerical simulation method developed to study the acoustic propagation processes in piezoelectric superlattices is briefly introduced. Comparing with the traditional δ-function model method, the FDTD-based method is more fundamental and is more convenient to be extended to higher dimensional cases, while the δ-function model method can be only used in the one-dimensional situation. To improve the simulation efficiency, the CUDA technique has been applied in our calculation and a significant speedup has been observed. ©2009 IEEE.
