Abstract:A new type of superlattice, a Fibonacci acoustic superlattice, is presented. Its ultrasonic spectrum, which is excited by the piezoelectric effect, has been studied theoretically and experimentally. The results are in good agreement with each other.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:A new type of Fibonacci optical superlattice is analysed. Its electro-optic effect is studied. The phase-matching concept is proposed for the first time for the Fibonacci optical superlattice. The transmission spectrum is non-self-similar owing to the dispersive effect of the refractive index. An extinction phenomenon exists provided that the thicknesses of the domains are properly selected.

Abstract:Raman scattering experiments from acoustic phonons in Fibonacci metallic Nb-Cu superlattices were performed. The main features of the experimental results show that the Raman spectrum is dominated by triplet peaks which originate from the density of states of longitudinal-acoustic (LA) phonons in the subbands of phonon dispersion. The expected rich structure of gaps in the phonon spectrum has been labeled by strongest diffraction wave vector factor nτp.

Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Artificial topological insulators in classical systems are thriving, especially the meta-atom-based three-dimensional (3D) topological lattices. Here we propose a paradigm based on engineering coupling networks in a generalized spatial Floquet lattice, which gives rise to low-loss and broadband 3D topological systems. A mapping between time and space dimensions is utilized to construct the Floquet system with chirality-assisted coupling patterns periodically modulated in spatial dimensions. The cyclotron orbiting motion of sound in the bulk and reversely orbiting motion on the surface are demonstrated, which provides a direct acoustic analogue of the electronic transport in Chern insulators. Weyl points and Fermi arc-like surface states unveil the topological transport of edge states. Splicing together two Floquet lattices with opposite chirality, we realize low-loss topological negative refraction on the surface, where the mirror reflection at the interface is prohibited. Our findings provide diverse ways to construct 3D devices with topological functionalities in acoustics and beyond.

Abstract:Raman scattering experiments have been performed on NbCu Fibonacci metallic superlattices. The Raman spectra are explained in terms of zone-folding effects and their frequencies are predicted by an elastic continuum model. The scattering intensities of folded doublets, however, are not accounted for by the standard photoelastic model.

Abstract:We study the scattering of light by longitudinal-acoustic phonons propagating along the axis of an infinite superlattice. In contrast to previous works, we take into account not only the difference between the acoustic and photoelastic parameters of the two media, but also the difference between their refractive indexes. In this case the incident and scattered light in the superlattice are represented by Bloch waves instead of plane waves. The scattering intensities, calculated in closed form by using a transfer-matrix method, are then valid for any value of the scattering wave vector q and not limited to q values small compared with the size of the Brillouin zone, \ensuremath{\pi}/D. The peak intensities are discussed for GaAs-AlAs superlattices as functions of the composition, period, and photoelastic parameters. The results may show noticeable differences with those of the previous works, especially for q near the boundaries of the successive Brillouin zones.

Abstract:Herein, we report construction of one kind of nesting-Fibonacci-super-lattice phononic crystal, in which the super-lattice cell is a well-defined Fibonacci generation sequence. We present a comparative study on band-gap structures of acoustic waves propagating in one-dimensional, nesting Fibonacci-periodic structure and simple-periodic structure. We find that there are more band gaps in nesting Fibonacci super-lattice models, and that they present behavior different from the split-up of band gaps with different generation numbers. With the increase of generation number, more band gaps split and occur. Additionally, when generation number becomes larger, Bragg scattering becomes more significant: the characteristic curves become flatter and band gaps become wider. Furthermore, we study the effect of various parameters such as density, thickness and defects on band-gap structures. Our work is significant both for understanding the intrinsic physical properties of nesting Fibonacci sequences and for providing flexible choices to meet real engineering requirements.

Scaling and Localization of Polaritonic States in Piezoelectric Fibonacci Superlattices

Abstract:The scaling and localization properties of polaritonic states in piezoelectric Fibonacci superlattices are studied using the generalized 4x4 transfer matrix method. The dynamics of electromagnetic waves and acoustic waves is treated on equal footing. Both polaritonic band structures and transmission spectra possess the pattern of the Cantorset with respect to generations. The scaling parameter alpha'=4.236 is in agreement with the previous studies on pure electronic and phononic Fibonacci superlattices. Furthermore, the fractal nature of the transmission spectra serves as a proof for the (quasi)localization of polaritons which should be observable in experiments.

Abstract:In this letter theoretical calculations and experimental results of ultrasonic generation and detection up to 800 MHz using an acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals are reported. The experiment is in good agreement with theory. Transducers with an insertion loss of nearly 0 dB at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been made.

Abstract:We were the first to report the realization of quasiperiodic amorphous semiconductor superlattices composed of alternating layers of a-Si:H and a-SiNx:H to form a Fibonacci sequence in which the ratio of incommensurate periods is equal to the golden mean, τ = (1+√5)/2. In the present work new results of low-angle X-ray diffraction with Lf = τLa+Lb = 148Å are in good agreement with a numerical calculation using the formula km,n = 2πLf−1(m+nτ). The effect of the quasiperiodicity on folded-zone longitudinal acoustic phonons is observed by Raman scattering. The folded-phonon frequencies calculated from an elastic continuum model are consistent with the observed doublet-peak frequencies.

Abstract:The plasmon properties of generalized Fibonacci type I and type II semiconductor superlattices are studied by a dynamical-map method. It is shown that the plasmon spectra are Cantor-set-like, i.e. the spectra are self-similar and the gaps in the spectra are densely distributed.

Abstract:The linear response theory is used to obtain the transfer matrix of the induced potential in a semiconductor superlattice system, in which the sub-band structure is taken into account. Using the transfer matrix to the Fibonacci superlattice, the authors calculate the spectrum of the intra-sub-band and inter-sub-band collective excitations in such a system. The scaling properties of the spectrum are analysed.

Abstract:A new exact real-space renormalization group approach is presented for the local phonon properties of any given site in an infinite Fibonacci chain. It is found that the local phonon densities of states for different sites are different from each other, although they have the same structure. Results also suggest that the local phonon spectrum is a Cantor set.

Abstract:We study transport properties of Fibonacci semiconductor superlattices in a uniform magnetic field (B) applied along the growth direction. Complicated magnetoresistance oscillations which do not vary periodically in 1/B are found. A field-dependent metal-insulator transition is predicted, and it is shown that the magnetoresistance increases with increasing order of the periodic approximant. Also, we show that at low enough temperature the longitudinal magnetoresistance of a high-order periodic approximant of the quasiperiodic superlattice can be distinguished from that of a low-order periodic approximant.

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we have employed a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-like transmission enhancement.

Abstract:In this communication, the band–gap structures of n-CF piezoelectric superlattices have been calculated using the transfer-matrix-method, the self-similarity behavior and recovery rule have been systematically analyzed. Consistent with the rigorous mathematical proof by Hu et al. [A. Hu, Z.X. Wen, S.S. Jiang, W.T. Tong, R.W. Peng, D. Feng, Phys. Rev. B 48 (1993) 829], we find that the n-CF sequences with 2≤n≤4 are identified as quasiperiodic. The imaginary wave numbers are characterized by the self-similar spectrum, their major peaks can all be properly indexed. In addition, we find that the n=5 sequence belongs to a critical case which lies at the border between quasiperiodic and non-quasiperiodic structures. The frequency range of the self-similarity pattern approaches zero and a unique indexing of imaginary wave numbers becomes impossible. Our study offers the information on the critical 5-CF superlattice which was not available before. The classification of band–gap structures and the scaling laws around fixed points are also given.

Abstract:An electric poling method has been used to prepare microstructured LiTaO3 crystals with periodically inverted-ferroelectric domains. By using these crystals as acoustic superlattices, both an “in-line” scheme and a “cross-field” scheme for acoustic excitation have been realized. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. It is expected that these results may be applied to a bulk-acoustic device operating at a frequency high above 450 MHz.
