Abstract:This paper analyses theoretically the 'crossed field' scheme for acoustic excitation of an acoustic superlattice. The electrical admittance is deduced by the use of Green functions. A configuration with an electromechanical coupling coefficient as high as 0.76 is found.

Abstract:An acoustic superlattice LiNbO3 crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was fabricated by introducing a periodic electric current through the solid–liquid interface during the crystal growing process. The domain morphology of an as-grown crystal was observed with a scanning electron microscope, and was found to be of good periodicity. A light diffraction experiment indicated that there was a periodic fluctuation of the dielectric constant along the crystal’s growing direction. Using the “crossed field” scheme, a 340 MHz ultrasonic was excited in the crystal, which means that the acoustic superlattice is suitable for constructing high-frequency bulk-wave acoustic devices.

Abstract:We study the scattering of light by longitudinal-acoustic phonons propagating along the axis of an infinite superlattice. In contrast to previous works, we take into account not only the difference between the acoustic and photoelastic parameters of the two media, but also the difference between their refractive indexes. In this case the incident and scattered light in the superlattice are represented by Bloch waves instead of plane waves. The scattering intensities, calculated in closed form by using a transfer-matrix method, are then valid for any value of the scattering wave vector q and not limited to q values small compared with the size of the Brillouin zone, \ensuremath{\pi}/D. The peak intensities are discussed for GaAs-AlAs superlattices as functions of the composition, period, and photoelastic parameters. The results may show noticeable differences with those of the previous works, especially for q near the boundaries of the successive Brillouin zones.

Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.
Acoustic Attenuation and Optical-Absorption Effects on Light Scattering by Acoustic Phonons in Superlattices.

Abstract:The effects of acoustical attenuation and optical absorption on light scattering by acoustic phonons propagating along the superlattice axis are theoretically analyzed and experimentally probed in GaAs/AlAs and Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattices. It is shown that the linewidth of the acoustic modes undergoes a clear narrowing near the Brillouin-zone edge due to the decrease of the group velocity of the phonons. It is also demonstrated that the damping of the acoustic waves makes the high-frequency modes at the Brillouin-zone edge shift into the ``forbidden gaps'' which have been evidenced in the case of lossless media. We have observed such a shift in a Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattice sample at phonon energies around 14 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for which the acoustic attenuation can no longer be neglected. It is also shown that the effects of optical absorption on the relative intensity of the folded acoustic modes are particularly sensitive in the condition where the incident light is Bragg reflected by the interfaces. This intensity behavior has been observed in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice and agrees with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:It is shown that superlattice structures undergo strong optical resonances near Bragg incidence, characterized by high energy density gains between the boundaries of the superlattice. These resonances actually correspond to antiresonances of the reflectivity R. The variations of R with the incident wavelength have been investigated with a Ti: sapphire tunable laser source and a good agreement between theory and experiment has been found. Besides, one can take advantage of this resonance to increase the backscattering of light by ultrasonic waves in superlattices, which occurs owing to the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector.

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we have employed a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-like transmission enhancement.

Abstract:An electric poling method has been used to prepare microstructured LiTaO3 crystals with periodically inverted-ferroelectric domains. By using these crystals as acoustic superlattices, both an “in-line” scheme and a “cross-field” scheme for acoustic excitation have been realized. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. It is expected that these results may be applied to a bulk-acoustic device operating at a frequency high above 450 MHz.

Abstract:We study theoretically the properties of the localized mixed acoustic phonon modes lying in the interior minigap in a superlattice (SL) grown away from cubic axial of bulk material with a cap layer by using a transfer-matrix method. We find the appearance and the characteristics of the mixed localized modes in the interior minigap strongly depend on the growth direction and the structure parameters of the superlattice. Compared with the case in infinite superlattice with a structural defect layer, the localized modes exhibit some novel features. The dependence of the interior minigap width on the growth direction of the superlattice is also demonstrated. This provides a theoretical basis for experimental observation of the mixed localized acoustic modes and the interior minigap in SLs.

Abstract:The frequency and intensity of direct acoustic modes (Brillouin lines) and folded acoustic modes are investigated in superlattices of period ≅ 500 Å as a function of the scattering wave vector. Both LA and TA polarizations are observed. The existence of folded acoustic modes at frequency lower than the Brillouin line is pointed out for scattering wave vectors larger than the first Brillouin-zone edge. We also emphasize the “anomalous” intensity behaviour of the different modes which is explained by an improved theory which takes into account the modulation of the acoustical and optical layer properties in the superlattice.

Abstract:The dynamics of Bloch electrons moving in a two-band superlattice driven by a dc-ac electric field is investigated. We show rigorously that (i) when the matching ratio between the Bloch frequency and the ac frequency is an integer, the spectrum is that of two quasi-energy bands; (ii) when the matching ratio is a rational, the spectrum is two interspaced fractional Wannier-Stark ladders; and (iii) each of these fractional ladders has an energy dispersion due to the interband coupling. We illustrate our findings by explicit calculations of the spectrum in the high-frequency case, and show how the energy dispersion is tuned by the ac field strength and how band collapse occurs.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytical method is presented for the study of shear horizontal surface acoustic waves in semi-infinite piezoelectrics/metal superlattices. The results show that the high electromechanical coupling coefficient and wide usable frequency range can be obtained in these superlattices.

Abstract:If a full band gap closes and then reopens when we continuously deform a periodic system while keeping its symmetry, a topological phase transition usually occurs. A common model demonstrating such a topological phase transition in condensed matter physics is the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. As well known, two distinct topological phases emerge when the intracell hopping is tuned from smaller to larger with respect to the intercell hopping in the model. The former case is topologically trivial, while the latter case is topologically non-trivial. Here, we design a 1D periodic acoustic system in exact analogy to the SSH model. The unit cell of the acoustic system is composed of two resonators and two junction tubes connecting them. We show that the topological phase transition happens in our acoustic analog when we tune the radii of the junction tubes which control the intercell and intracell hoppings. The topological phase transition is characterized by the abrupt change of the geometric Zak phase. The topological interface states between non-trivial and trivial phases of our acoustic analog are experimentally measured, and the results agree very well with the numerical values. Further, we show that topologically non-trivial phases of our acoustic analog of the SSH model can support edge states, on which the discussion is absent in previous works about topological acoustics. The edge states are robust against localized defects and perturbations.

Abstract:For a critical examination of the dielectric continuum model as applied to a superlattice, we have introduced a microscopic model, which takes proper account of the long-range Coulomb interaction and yet permits easy solution for the long-wavelength LO and TO modes. With this model, it is shown that such long-wavelength modes approach different limits depending on directions of propagation relative to the axis of the superlattice. This demonstrates that to treat the confined bulklike modes in superlattices as modes of isolated slabs is inadequate.
