Abstract:We study the scattering of light by longitudinal-acoustic phonons propagating along the axis of an infinite superlattice. In contrast to previous works, we take into account not only the difference between the acoustic and photoelastic parameters of the two media, but also the difference between their refractive indexes. In this case the incident and scattered light in the superlattice are represented by Bloch waves instead of plane waves. The scattering intensities, calculated in closed form by using a transfer-matrix method, are then valid for any value of the scattering wave vector q and not limited to q values small compared with the size of the Brillouin zone, \ensuremath{\pi}/D. The peak intensities are discussed for GaAs-AlAs superlattices as functions of the composition, period, and photoelastic parameters. The results may show noticeable differences with those of the previous works, especially for q near the boundaries of the successive Brillouin zones.
Acoustic Attenuation and Optical-Absorption Effects on Light Scattering by Acoustic Phonons in Superlattices.

Abstract:The effects of acoustical attenuation and optical absorption on light scattering by acoustic phonons propagating along the superlattice axis are theoretically analyzed and experimentally probed in GaAs/AlAs and Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattices. It is shown that the linewidth of the acoustic modes undergoes a clear narrowing near the Brillouin-zone edge due to the decrease of the group velocity of the phonons. It is also demonstrated that the damping of the acoustic waves makes the high-frequency modes at the Brillouin-zone edge shift into the ``forbidden gaps'' which have been evidenced in the case of lossless media. We have observed such a shift in a Si/${\mathrm{Si}}_{0.5}$${\mathrm{Ge}}_{0.5}$ superlattice sample at phonon energies around 14 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for which the acoustic attenuation can no longer be neglected. It is also shown that the effects of optical absorption on the relative intensity of the folded acoustic modes are particularly sensitive in the condition where the incident light is Bragg reflected by the interfaces. This intensity behavior has been observed in a GaAs/AlAs superlattice and agrees with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The ultrasonic excitation and propagation in an acoustic superlattice made of a LiNbO3 crystal is studied. Some interesting phenomena are predicted theoretically. The resonance is determined by the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice (ASL). The acoustic power emitted by the ASL into the transmission medium is directly proportional to N2 (N is the number of domains of the ASL). In view of these two features, the ASL may have potential applications in acoustic devices operating at frequencies of several hundred megahertz to several gigahertz. Another interesting phenomenon is the existence of a satellitelike resonance, whose frequency is related to the total thickness of the ASL. Using the ASL, resonators and transducers have been fabricated with operating frequencies in the range of 500–1000 MHz. Satellitelike resonances have been observed. Transducers with a very low insertion loss at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been fabricated. The experiments basically confirm the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:It is shown that superlattice structures undergo strong optical resonances near Bragg incidence, characterized by high energy density gains between the boundaries of the superlattice. These resonances actually correspond to antiresonances of the reflectivity R. The variations of R with the incident wavelength have been investigated with a Ti: sapphire tunable laser source and a good agreement between theory and experiment has been found. Besides, one can take advantage of this resonance to increase the backscattering of light by ultrasonic waves in superlattices, which occurs owing to the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:The effect of asymmetry of boundary conditions on the acoustic properties of an acoustic superlattice transducer is studied theoretically. The resonance frequency is influenced by the thickness unequality of the positive and negative domains. This may be used to tailor the property of the ASL transducer.

Abstract:In this paper, superwide-angle acoustic propagations above the critical angles of the Snell law in liquid-solid superlattice are investigated. Incident waves above the critical angles of the Snell law usually inevitably induce total reflection. However, incident waves with big oblique angles through the liquid-solid superlattice will produce a superwide angle transmission in a certain frequency range so that total reflection does not occur. Together with the simulation by finite element analysis, theoretical analysis by using transfer matrix method suggests the Bragg scattering of the Lamb waves as the physical mechanism of acoustic wave super-propagation far beyond the critical angle. Incident angle, filling fraction, and material thickness have significant influences on propagation. Superwide-angle propagation phenomenon may have potential applications in nondestructive evaluation of layered structures and controlling of energy flux.

Abstract:The frequency and intensity of direct acoustic modes (Brillouin lines) and folded acoustic modes are investigated in superlattices of period ≅ 500 Å as a function of the scattering wave vector. Both LA and TA polarizations are observed. The existence of folded acoustic modes at frequency lower than the Brillouin line is pointed out for scattering wave vectors larger than the first Brillouin-zone edge. We also emphasize the “anomalous” intensity behaviour of the different modes which is explained by an improved theory which takes into account the modulation of the acoustical and optical layer properties in the superlattice.

Abstract:This paper analyses theoretically the 'crossed field' scheme for acoustic excitation of an acoustic superlattice. The electrical admittance is deduced by the use of Green functions. A configuration with an electromechanical coupling coefficient as high as 0.76 is found.

Abstract:The relationship between the resonance frequency and the periodicity of the acoustic superlattice of LiNbO3 crystals has been obtained by analysis of the excitation and propagation of elastic waves in this kind of material with which high‐frequency resonance in the range of 500–800 MHz has been realized experimentally. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical ones. The applications of acoustic devices operating at frequencies high above 500 MHz are to be expected.

Abstract:The Brillouin light-scattering technique has been exploited for;studying the Rayleigh acoustic mode in superlattice films consisting of alternate layers of a-Si:H and a-SiNx:H. The phase velocity of the Rayleigh mode has been measured on superlattices with different thicknesses of the a-Si:H layer. The results obtained have been interpreted in terms of the effective medium model within the elastic continuum approximation; no anomalous behavior is observed, in contrast with previous ultrasonic measurements in superlattice with a minor nitrogen content.

The experiment is in good agreement with theory. Transducers with an insertion loss of nearly 0 dB at 555 MHz and a 5.8% 3 dB bandwidth have been made.

Abstract:For a critical examination of the dielectric continuum model as applied to a superlattice, we have introduced a microscopic model, which takes proper account of the long-range Coulomb interaction and yet permits easy solution for the long-wavelength LO and TO modes. With this model, it is shown that such long-wavelength modes approach different limits depending on directions of propagation relative to the axis of the superlattice. This demonstrates that to treat the confined bulklike modes in superlattices as modes of isolated slabs is inadequate.

Abstract:In this paper, by a semi-analytical method, the propagation characteristics of shear horizontal surface acoustic waves in semi-infinite superlattices containing viscous materials are investigated. The factors that influence the attenuation and phase velocity of the surface waves are analyzed in detail. The results may be useful for the design of acoustic wave devices.

Abstract:We herein investigate the scattering of orthogonal counterpropagating waves and one-way propagating bulk waves in discrete acoustic superlattices subjected to a scattering potential applied to one of the superlattice unit cells. We demonstrate theoretically that the orthogonality of counterpropagating modes does not provide robust protection against backscattering. By contrast, the one-way propagating modes do satisfy a no-reflection condition, i.e., they exhibit immunity to backscattering, for a wide range of applied scattering potentials, which represent defects and disorder.

Abstract:The bulk acoustic wave delay lines are demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally based on the acoustic superlattices. In one bulk acoustic wave delay line, two collinear acoustic superlattices are separately located, where the generation and detection of the bulk acoustic waves are executed, respectively. A basic bulk acoustic wave delay line working at 819 MHz with the delay time of 2.46 mu s was realized. Furthermore, by employing two enantiomorphous aperiodic acoustic superlattices, a broadband dispersive bulk acoustic wave delay line with the center frequency at 295 MHz has also been fabricated and investigated. Abstract:A combined Brillouin-Raman study has been performed in Si-Si1-xGex and GaAs-Al As superlattices. The photoelastic constant of Si0.5Ge0.5 with respect to Si for several light wavelengths is measured for the first time by light scattering experiments. The frequencies, linewidths and relative intensities of the superlattice acoustic phonon modes are carefully investigated, especially for scattering wavevectors in the vicinity of Brillouin zone boundaries. The acoustic and optical absorptions are found to have particular effects on the frequencies and relative intensities for scattering wavevectors in these regions.
