Abstract:Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals were prepared by sol-gel method at low temperature. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals are granulars with an average grain size of 3.5 nm (TiO2), 3.0 nm (Ti0.9Fe0.1O2), and 2.8 nm ( Ti0.75Fe0.25O2). It is found that the doping of Fe3+ ions results in the lattice distortion of TiO2. Anatase phase is in Ti1-xFexO2 nanocrystals. XPS result shows that the element Ti in the Ti1-xFexO2 sample is tetravalent while the Fe element in the Ti1-xFexO2 sample is trivalent. In IR spectra of Ti0.75Fe0.25O2, both the TiO2 surface associated OH group stretching vibration and flexural vibrations blue shifted, indicating the presence of the chemical bonding action between Fe3+ and TiO2. The absorption of Ti-O-Ti stretching vibration blue shifted, owing to the presence of Fe-O-Ti stretching vibration, indicating Fe3+ ions doping into the crystal lattice of TiO2 may occupy the Ti4+ position in the crystal lattice. The mechanism of low temperature sol-gel preparation of Ti1-xFeO2 nanocrystals was investigated.
