Abstract:We report the metathesis cyclopolymerization (MCP) of 1,7-dihalogen-1,6-heptadiyne derivatives by using MoCl5/(n-Bu)(4)Sn complex catalyst system. Five homopolymers (P1-P5) and a copolymer (P[1-co-5]) were obtained in high yields (up to 95%) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 210 000) under the optimized conditions (60 & DEG;C, 12 h, in 1,2-dichloroethane). The structures of the resultant polymers were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic techniques, which confirmed the MCP methodology was successfully applied to the preparation of halogen-modified polydiynes. The resultant polydiynes possess good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability. More significantly, these chloro-modified polydiynes demonstrated unprecedented upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior, which can be tentatively related to the halogen bonding between the halogen atoms and the oxygen/nitrogen atoms of solvents. The UCST performance of the polydiynes was influenced by the side chain of the polymers (58-110 & DEG;C) and copolymerization of different monomers (61-66 & DEG;C). Interestingly, by linking tetraphenylethene (TPE) groups onto the polymer side chains, the UCST process could be visually monitored due to the aggregation-induced emission characteristics of TPE groups.

Abstract:The paper presents the polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) initiated by samarium diiodide (SmI2) combining with hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) for the first time. The effects of various parameters, such as reaction temperature, AN/Sm and HMPA/Sm molar ratios, reaction time on the polymer yield and its molecular weight were discussed. On the basis of both IR and NMR analysis of resulted polymers, a single-electron-transfer initiation mechanism of AN as radical anion was proposed for this polymerization, which was further sustained by the copolymerization of AN with ε-caprolactone and 2,2-dimethyltrimethylene carbonate, respectively.

Abstract:Divalent samarium bis(phosphido) complex Sm(PPh2)(2) was first applied as an initiator for the ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL). In comparison to samarium diiodide (SmI2), this Sm(II) complex exhibited much higher activity and yielded poly(epsilon-CL) with higher molecular weight. At the same time, an in-situ generated tetrafunctional samarium enolate from the reduction of 1,1,1,1-tetra(2-bromoisobutyryloxymethyl)methane with Sm(PPh2)(2) or SmI2 has proven to initiate the polymerization of epsilon-CL under mild conditions. The resulting linear and star-shaped poly(epsilon-CL)s have been characterized by H-1 NMR, GPC, and SLS.

Abstract:A Na2S2O4-promoted radical addition reaction of perfluoroalkyl iodides with allenes affording 1-perfluoroalkyl-2-alken-2-yl iodides 3 in 52-69% yields has been developed. Kinetic resolution of the Z/E mixture via the Pd(0)-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction was applied to prepare pure vinylic iodides (Z)-3 and the related coupling products (E)-4 up to 98:2 E/Z ratio.

Abstract:New alkyl and allyl complexes 1-3 {1: [CP'Sm-2(C3H5)](n), Cp' = Me3CC5H4; 2: [Me4C2(C5H4)(2)]Sm(C3H5)(2)Li(dme), dme = (CH3OCH2CH2OCH3); 3: Cp'2SmMe2Li(dioxane)} were synthesized from (Cp'2SmCl)(2) and from the magnesium derivative [Me4C2(C5H4)(2)]SmCl . MgCl2(THF)(4) (4). The ansa anionic complex 2 exhibited good activity for the stereospecific 1,4-trans polymerization of isoprene, whereas the neutral derivative 1 was inactive. In the same way, the anionic complex [Cp'2SmMe2]Li(dioxane) (3) was found to be an ethylene polymerization catalyst of very short Lifetime. The lack of reactivity of 1 is related to the associated structure of this coordinatively unsaturated complex: this fact was established by the formation of the carbene adduct Cp'Sm-2(C3H5)[C(NiPr)(2)(CMe)(2)] (1'). Crystals of 1' were isolated but this new compound undergoes a partial rearrangement into a tris-Cp' species in solution. Similar behaviour is observed for the analogous complex Cp'2SmCl[C(NiPr)(2)(CMe)(2)] (1 "). The X-ray crystal structure revealed the formation of the adduct, as a toluene solvate, which exists in benzene solution in equilibrium with Cp'Sm-3 and Cp'SmCl2[C(NiPr)(2)(CMe)(2)](2). The catalytic behaviour of 2 is compared with that of other early lanthanide derivatives.
Halogen/π interaction and cooperativity effect between dihalogen molecules and unsaturated hydrocarbons: An ab initio study

Abstract:Ab initio calculations on the complexes formed between unsaturated hydrocarbon(R) and dihalogen molecules(XY), R⋯(XY)n (n=1–2), have been performed at MP2/aug-cc-PVDZ level of theory. Geometrical structures, interaction energies and topological parameters derived from the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) developed by Bader have been studied systematically to characterize the halogen⋯π interactions. The present theoretical investigation indicates that such interactions in all trimolecular complexes R⋯(XY)2 are significantly stronger than those in the corresponding bimolecular series R⋯(XY), demonstrating the existence of cooperativity effect. This may provide a theoretical basis for our understanding the reaction mechanism of the electrophilic addition of halogen to the unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The anionic polyaddition of methyl‐substituted 1,1‐diphenylethylene derivatives, catalyzed by lithium diisopropylamide, was examined. Polymerization of the monomer was conducted at 50°C in THF with the addition of diisopropylamine. NMR and MALDI‐TOF‐MS analyses of the obtained polymer indicate that polymerization proceeded via a polyaddition reaction, in other words, repetition of the lithium amide‐induced metalation reaction of the monomer at the methyl group and the subsequent nucleophilic addition reaction of the corresponding benzyllithium with the vinyl group in the monomer. On the other hand, the unsubstituted diphenylethylene monomer could not be polymerized by the same reaction condition. Consequently, the resulting polymer was indeed obtained by an anionic polyaddition mechanism. In conclusion, a novel hydrocarbon polymer containing a phenyl group in the main chain of the repeating unit was successfully obtained from a methyl‐substituted 1,1‐diphenylethylene monomer.

Abstract:A convenient approach to N-Boc amino ketones 3a similar to 3l has been developed, which features a SmI2 prompted one-pot radical addition-ring opening process of 2-piperidinone with alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. Moreover, the indolizidine skeleton (6) has been successfully synthesized from the key methyl (S)-8-((tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino)-5-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)-4-oxooctanoate (3e), which undergoes one-pot deprotection-condensation-reduction-amination process.
