Abstract:Mesoporous SiO2-modified nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts have been prepared by sol-hydrothermal processes, followed by post-treatment with appropriate amount of surfactant F127-modified silica sol. The resulting photocatalysts were also characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller spectroscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, transmission electron microscopy, FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, steady state surface photovoltage (SS-SPV), and transient state surface photovoltage (TS-SPV) techniques. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by degrading rhodamine B solution under simulated solar illumination. The results show that the surface modification with mesoporous SiO2 greatly enhances the thermal stability of the nanocrystalline anatase TiO2, even still being with a main anatase phase after calcination at 900 degrees C, and the more is the amount of SiO2 used, the more obvious is the ehancement in the thermal stability. This enhancement is attributed to the effective inhibition of the direct contacts and the diffusions among anatase nanocrystals as well as to the retardation of the crystallite growth. Interestingly, the proper amount of mesoporous SiO2-modified nanocrystalline TiO2 samples by thermal treatment at high temperature can exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial-available P25 TiO2, which is explained mainly by the high photoinduced charge carrier separation rate resulting from the high anatase crystallinity based on the analyses of SS-SPV and TS-SPV responses and the large surface area related to the small nanocrystallite size and mesoporous SiO2 as well as still possessing a certain amount of surface hydroxyl group.
Controllable and Repeatable Synthesis of Thermally Stable Anatase Nanocrystal-Silica Composites with Highly Ordered Hexagonal Mesostructures.

Abstract:In this article, we report a controllable and reproducible approach to prepare highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous crystalline TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites with variable Ti/Si ratios (0 to infinity). XRD, TEM, and N2 sorption techniques have been used to systematically investigate the pore wall structure, and thermal stability functioned with the synthetic conditions. The resultant materials are ultra highly stable (over 900 degrees C), have large uniform pore diameters (approximately 6.8 nm), and have high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas (approximately 290 m2/g). These mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 composites were obtained using titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors and triblock copolymer P123 as a template based on the solvent evaporation-induced co-self-assembly process under a large amount of HCl. Our strategy was the synchronous assembly of titanate and silicate oligomers with triblock copolymer P123 by finely tuning the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere and evaporation temperature according to the Ti/Si ratio. We added a large amount of acidity to lower condensation and polymerization rates of TIPO and accelerate the rates for TEOS molecules. TEM and XRD measurements clearly show that the titania is made of highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles, which are uniformly embedded in the pore walls to form the "bricked-mortar" frameworks. The amorphous silica acts as a glue linking the TiO2 nanocrystals and improves the thermal stability. As the silica contents increase, the thermal stability of the resulting mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites increases and the size of anatase nanocrystals decreases. Our results show that the unique composite frameworks make the mesostructures overwhelmingly stable; even with high Ti/Si ratios (> or =80/20) the stability of the composites is higher than 900 degrees C. The mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities (which are higher than that for commercial catalyst P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous suspension. The excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the bifunctional effect of highly crystallized anatase nanoparticles and high porosity.
Interface Actions Between TiO2 and Porous Diatomite on the Structure and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2-diatomite

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Effect of Calcination Temperature on Crystal Structure and Photocatalytic Prop- Erty of TiO2/Diatomite Nanoparticles

Abstract:TiO2/diatomite photocatalysts were synthesized by a facile Sol-Gel method using diatomite as supporter and tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) as precursor. The crystalline and morphological properties of catalysts with different calcination temperatures were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Results reveal that the crystallite size becomes larger and the anatase phase transforms to the rutile phase at elevated temperature. Compared with unimmobilized TiO2, the diatomite supporter impedes the transformation and prevents nano-TiO2 particles from aggregation. The effect of calcination temperature on photocatalytic reactivities of these catalysts was investigated by UV-assisted degradation of 10 mg/L Rhodamine B (RhB). The sample calcined at 750℃ exhibits significantly enhanced reactivity with the removal rate of RhB up to about 100% after irradiation for 120 min, equivalent to that of Degussa P25 under similar conditions. The highest photocatalytic activity is observed in TiO2/diatomite calcined under 750℃ which can be attributed to the presence of anatase and rutile phases in an appropriate ratio at 9:1.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Preparation and Characterization of Nanosized Anatase TiO2 Cuboids for Photocatalysis

Abstract:Without use of any templates or shape-protectors, uniformly sized anatase TiO2 nanocrystallites with cuboidal morphology were synthesized by changing titanium hydroxide precipitates into their corresponding ethanol-gels (viz. by washing several times with anhydrous ethanol) followed by drying in supercritical ethanol (7.0MPa, 270°C) and calcination at high temperature (AS-preparation). Characterizations with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and nitrogen adsorption suggest that the cuboidal anatase nanocrystallites are highly resistant to thermal sintering. The anatase structure of the cuboidal nanocrystallites was maintained even after calcinations up to temperatures as high as 800°C. Thermogravimetric (TG) measurements in flowing air show that the as-prepared cuboidal TiO2 nanocrystallites were contaminated with some carbonaceous residues, which can be completely removed by calcination at 500°C in air. Application of these cuboidal TiO2 nanocrystallites as photocatalytic materials was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange in water. With increasing the calcination temperature up to 800°C, the photocatalytic activities of anatase TiO2 cuboids increased gradually due to improved crystallization of the material. The sample calcined at 800°C afforded the highest photocatalytic activity, which is comparable to that of the commercial photocatalyst Degussa P-25. Due to the presence of carbonaceous residues after the supercritical drying in the preparation, the samples calcined at temperatures no higher than 400°C showed higher photocatalytic activities than the sample calcined at 500°C. However, further calcination of the sample at 1000°C led to drastic reduction in the photocatalytic activity due to the anatase-to-rutile phase transformation and sintering of the material.

Abstract:A novel micro-mesopores composite material has successfully been synthesized at basic hydrothermal conditions using natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Two surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), have been employed in order to shape the pores in the composite. The resultant silica-clay has large surface area (472 m(2)/g) and high hydrothermal stability, which makes it a potentially host-material for catalyst. The molecular size of different surfactant leads to the multi-peak distribution of pore size, and the surfactant of larger size (PEG) corresponds to the formation of larger pores. Moreover, the photocatalytic results show that, comparing with pure TiO2 particles, the loaded TiO2 on such silica-clay shows higher photodegradation rate of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous. P-doped TiO_2 Immobilized Diatomite and Its Photocatalytic Performance under Visible Light

Abstract:P-doped nanosized TiO2powders(P-TiO2)were synthesized by a sol-gel method with tetrabutyl titanate and phosphoric acid as Ti and phosphorus resources,and then immobilized on diatomite(P-TiO2-Dt).P-doped TiO2powders and P-TiO2-diatomite were characterized by XRD,FTIR,SEM and UV-Vis.The photocatalytic activities of P-TiO2and P-TiO2-Dt were investigated by the degradation of methyl orange and methylene blue under visible light.The results show that phosphorus is incorporated into the TiO2lattice.The transformation temperature from anatase-to-rutile phase and the crystal growth of TiO2are remarkably improved.The morphology of diatomite is not destroyed by supported P-TiO2.According to the diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectra,P doping and supported by diatomite both lead to absorption edge of TiO2and shift to the visible-light region.This implies that P-TiO2and P-TiO2-Dt have photocatalytic activities undervisible-light irradiation.As a result,the P-TiO2-Dt photocatalyst exhibits higher visible-light catalytic effect than unloaded P-TiO2,which is due to the interactions between diatomite support and P-TiO2.The photocatalytic experiments prove that the sample with P-TiO2-Dt content of 20% exhibits the best photocatalytic activity.
Preparation of TiO_2-SiO_2 Composite Powders Stabilized at High Temperature by Two-Step Hydrothermal Method

Abstract:TiO_2-SiO_2 composite powders stabilized at high temperature with high photocatalytic activity were prepared using a two-step hydrothermal method,with tetrabutyl titanate and tetraethyl orthosilicate as the materials. The powders were then characterized by means of dynamic light-scattering size analysis,DSC,FT-IR,TEM and XRD.The results of particle size analysis indicate that the composite powders disperse well in a size range of 10～30 nm with narrow distribution.DSC results show that the addition of silica greatly improves the high-temperature stability of titania dioxide.Phase analysis results demonstrate that the high-temperature stability of anatase titania becomes better with the increase of SiO_2 content,and that the composite powders with a TiO_2/SiO_2 molar ratio of 1:l maintain as anatase phase after being treated at 1200℃for 2h.FT-IR spectra show that there is no Ti—O—Si bonds in the.TiO_2-SiO_2 composite powders before and after the treatment at 800℃for 2h.Moreover,according to the degradation of aqueous methyl orange by TiO_2-SiO_2 composite powders under UV irradiation,it is found that (1) the photocatalysis of the composite powders without heat treatment is similar to that of commercial P25 TiO_2 powders;(2) the photocatalytic activity of the composite powders after the heat treatment at 800 and 1 000℃for 2 h is much higher than that of P25;and(3) after the heat treatment at 1200℃for 2 h,the photocatalytic activity of the composite powders becomes poorer.
Novel Thermally Stable Phosphorus-Doped TiO2 Photocatalyst Synthesized by Hydrolysis of TiCl4

Abstract:A novel thermally stable phosphorous-doped TiO2 has been successfully synthesized by liquid hydrolysis of TiCl4 with ammonia, with hypophosphorous acid as the precursor of the dopant. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry, N-2 physical adsorption at 77 K, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and point of zero charge determination. It was found that increased calcination temperature gave an improvement of the anatase crystallinity and an enrichment of phosphorus species on the titania surface. The increased surface P content led to a linear enhancement of the specific adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) because of the Coulombic attractive force between the cationic dye and the negatively charged P-doped TiO2 surface. Importantly, the P-doped anatase TiO2 was stable even after calcination at 900 degrees C for 4 h, much more stable than the sample by the sol-gel method. This may be attributed to the partial transformation of amorphous titania to anatase during the hydrolysis of TiCl4. Photocatalytic tests showed that the P-doped TiO2 retained its high specific activity for the degradation of MB even after calcination at temperatures of 700-900 degrees C. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Si-doped and un-doped nanocrystalline TiO2 samples have been synthesized by simple one-pot water-organic two-phase separated hydrolysis-solvothermal (HST) processes, and characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, FT-IR, DRS and surface photovoltage techniques. The effects of the solvothermal temperature and Si doping on the anatase thermal stability, and on the photocatalytic activity for degrading rhodamine B were investigated in detail. The results show that, as the solvothermal temperature rises, the crystallinity and thermal stability of the resulting nano-sized anatase TiO2 gradually increase. Noticeably, the as-prepared TiO2 obtained at appropriate solvothermal temperature (160°C) exhibits high photocatalytic activity. Moreover, although Si doping does not improve the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared anatase TiO2, it greatly enhances the anatase thermal stability and inhibits crystallite growth during the process of post-thermal treatment. Interestingly, the Si-doped TiO2 post-treated at high temperature displays much higher photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 TiO2. It is clearly demonstrated that the joint effects of high anatase crystallinity and large surface area lead to high photocatalytic activity. This work provides a simple and effective strategy for the synthesis of high-performance TiO2-based functional nanomaterials.

Abstract:Anatase-type TiO2 fine powders were synthesized under hydrothermal condition. The precursor was obtained via precipitation route using Ti(SO4)2. The characterization of the as-prepared sample was confirmed by TEM, XRD, UV-Vis and low temperature N2 adsorption measurements (BET). The photocatalytic activity was also investigated by the degradation of methyl orange solutions. The particles of the as-synthesized sample with narrow size distribution had an average diameter of about 24 nm. The specific BET surface area of the as-synthesized sample was about 56 m2 x g(-1), which is similar to the commercial TiO2 (P25). The prepared materials showed the similar photocatalytic activity when compared with the performance of commercial TiO2 (P25).

Abstract:Porous SiO2-TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized by utilizing TiO2 nanopartilces obtained by a sol-gel method, followed by an impregnation process with F127 modified SiO2, sol. The resulting samples were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, N-2 adsorption-desorption, UV-Vis DRS spectra and FT-TR spectra, and their photocatalytic activities were also evaluated by degrading RhB solution under illumination. The effects of the SiO2 on the thermal stability and photocatalytic activity of anatase nanoparticles were mainly investigated. The results show that the SO2 can greatly enhance the thermal stability of TiO2, crystallities, even having a principal anatase phase composition after heat-treated at 900 degrees C, and make TiO2 maintain a small crystallite size. The large surface area of the resulting SiO2-TiO2 nanocomposites is attributed to the small crystallite size and porous SiO2. During the processes of photocatalytic degradation RhB, all the as-prepared SiO2-TiO2 nanocomposites by thermal treatment at high temperature exhibit higher activity than Degussa P-25 TiO2. The high activity is attributed to the high anatase crystallinity and the large surface area.

Abstract:N, B, Si-tridoped mesoporous TiO2, together with N-doped, N, B-codoped and N, Si-codoped TiO2, was prepared by a modified sol–gel method. The samples were characterized by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXRD), N2 adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV–visible adsorbance spectra (UV–vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The N, B, Si-tridoped mesoporous TiO2 showed small crystallite size, large specific surface area (350 m2/g), uniform pore distribution (3.2 nm) and strong absorption in the visible light region. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by the photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) aqueous solution. The N, B, Si-tridoping sample exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity compared with other synthesized photocatalysts. The high activity could be attributed to the strong absorption in the visible light region, large specific surface area, small crystallite size, large amount of surface hydroxyl groups, and mesoporosity.
Synthesis and Characterization of Phosphated Mesoporous Titanium Dioxide with High Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:A surfactant-templated approach was used to synthesize phosphated mesoporous titanium dioxide by incorporating phosphorus from phosphoric acid directly into the framework of TiO2. The resulting materials were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption, TEM, XPS analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and isoelectric point measurements. The surface area of phosphated mesoporous TiO2 exceeded 300 m(2)/g after calcination at 400 degreesC. It was found that the incorporation of phosphorus could stabilize the TiO2 framework and increase the surface area significantly. This stabilization is attributed to two reasons: the more complete condensation of surface Ti-OH in the as-prepared sample and the inhibition of grain growth of the embedded anatase TiO2 by the interspersed amorphous titanium phosphate matrix during thermal treatment. Both pure and phosphated mesoporous TiO2 show significant activities on the oxidation of n-pentane. The higher photocatalytic activity of phosphated mesoporous TiO2 can be explained by the extended band gap energy, large surface area, and the existence of Ti ions in a tetrahedral coordination.

Abstract:The mesoporous titania, designated MS-TiO2 was successfully prepared via a new combination of pluronic P123 and poly ethylene glycol templates and acetic acid as the hydrolytic retardant with extremely high crystallinity achieved during synthesis process. MS-TiO2 has remarkable thermal stability, biporous mesostructure and superior photocatalytical activity for phenol degradation and mineralization as compared to mesoporous TiO2 prepared using single template systems. The anatase–rutile phase transformation of the MS-TiO2 was not observed up to 800°C. The mesoscale order of MS-TiO2 was retained after thermal treatment up to 450°C as confirmed by low angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. It maintained its pore properties at high temperature of 700°C with a significant pore size 10.4nm and pore volume 0.11cm3/g. MS-TiO2 has biporous mesostructure with the small mesopore of 5.5nm and the large mesopore of 8.7nm in mean pore diameters. The MS-TiO2 showed higher photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation than mesoporous titania prepared using single templates and standard system of Degussa P25. The remarkably high catalytic activity of the MS-TiO2 is attributed to its high crystallinity and biporous mesostructure. The phenol mineralization was confirmed using high performance liquid chromatography and total organic carbon analyses.

Abstract:The effects of heat treatment, dopant type and thickness of sol layer, on the formation and stability of ordered TiO2 mesostructure were investigated. Higher ageing temperature facilitates the separation of organic phase and inorganic phase, while thinner sol layer facilitates the formation of homogeneous system and improves the mesostructural order of TiO2. Lanthanum dopant, which is more electropositive than Ti, can improve the thermal stability of mesostructure by enhancing the strength of Ti–O bond. On the contrary, Fe and Pd dopants, which are more electronegative than Ti, decrease the thermal stability of mesostructure. Furthermore, La doped mesoporous TiO2 shows high activity in the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under the irradiation of visible light.

Abstract:The photocatalyst of TiO2 ultrafine powders were prepared by the means of thermohydrolysis of the TiOSO4 solution．The influences of synthetic conditions for TiO2 were investigated．The behaviors of TiO2 photocatalyst was characterized by X－ray diffraction，TEM，BET mothods and TG－DTG－DTA methods．The product of photocatalyst which is heated at 160℃ for four hours can be obtained，with a primary particle diameter of 20nm and a specific surface area of 170m2／g． The photocatalyst particles were spherical and porous，with anatase crystal TiO2 and amorphous structure．The catalyst activity is as good as Degussa P25 TiO2．
