Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:Morphology and crystalline-phase control of titanium dioxide is a crucial issue in the study of photocatalytic activity. Here, we present a facile synthetic path combing the solgel method with solvothermal treatment to form hybrid mesoporous and microporous TiO2. The TiO2 precursor was obtained by the solgel method, and this was self-assembled into mesopores and micropores by NH4F corrosiveness on the surface of TiO2 under hydrothermal conditions. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterise the titania powders. The results reveal that NH4F not only improved the formation of the crystallised anatase phase but also served as a corrosive agent modified on the surface of TiO2 precursors. Defective voids among these nanoparticles formed micropores by hydrothermal reaction of NH4F and TiO2 over a long time. When the NH4F concentration was 1.0 mol.L-1, micropores became dominant,and few mesopores were obtained, and this results in a smaller average pore size. Thus, mesoporous and microporous structures were formed. Furthermore, these crystallised mesoporous and microporous anatase titania nanoparticles with uniform structure and high surface area have a higher photocatalytic activity for azo dye degradation under near UV irradiation.
Mesoporous hollow sphere titanium dioxide photocatalysts through hydrothermal silica etching

Abstract:Robust, monodisperse, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO₂) submicrometer hollow spheres were synthesized through a single step hydrothermal silica etching reaction under mild conditions. Efficient silica (SiO₂) removal was achieved without the use of toxic reagents, and a unique controllable silica redeposition mechanism was identified, imparting the hollow spheres with excellent structural integrity. The parameters of the hydrothermal reaction affecting the etching process, including pH, temperature, and silica concentration, were systematically investigated and optimized for the production of silica-templated hollow structures. The resulting processing conditions yielded TiO₂ hollow spheres with a surface area of ∼300 m² g⁻¹ and anatase phase crystallization, which exhibited high adsorption capacity for methylene blue dye and good photocatalytic activity without requiring high-temperature calcination.
Synthesis of Well-Ordered Mesoporous Titania with Tunable Phase Content and High Photoactivity

Abstract:Using TiCl4 and Ti(OBu)(4) as the precursors and Pluronic P123 as the template, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) is successfully prepared by the nonhydrolytic evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method with a three-dimensional mesostructure obtained. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD) show that the pore wall is composed of both anatase and rutile phases. Transmission electron micrograph observations (TEM) reveal a well-ordered open-pore mesostructure. N-2 adsorption analysis exhibits a narrow pore size distribution. Photodegradation of phenol shows that the sample has a better photoactivity than Degussa P25. Further investigations on the effect of the "acid-base pair" find that by changing the molar ratio of TiCl4/Ti(OBu)(4), both the pore texture and phase composition can be well-controlled. A high content of TiCl4 is considered to favor the formation of regular mesostructures and a proper weight ratio of anatase/rutile as well, which can finally affect the photocatalytic efficiency of the sample.

Abstract:A novel micro-mesopores composite material has successfully been synthesized at basic hydrothermal conditions using natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Two surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), have been employed in order to shape the pores in the composite. The resultant silica-clay has large surface area (472 m(2)/g) and high hydrothermal stability, which makes it a potentially host-material for catalyst. The molecular size of different surfactant leads to the multi-peak distribution of pore size, and the surfactant of larger size (PEG) corresponds to the formation of larger pores. Moreover, the photocatalytic results show that, comparing with pure TiO2 particles, the loaded TiO2 on such silica-clay shows higher photodegradation rate of methyl orange (MO) in aqueous. Abstract:Mesoporous titania-silica (TiO2-SiO2) composites have been directly synthesized through a hydrothermal method in weak acidic conditions by using TiCl3 solution as a titanium source and triblock copolymer P123 (EO20PO70EO20) as a template with the assistance of zinc acetate. Characterizations by XRD, TEM, and N-2 sorption measurements show that highly ordered mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 with the BET specific area of 882 m(2)/g was obtained with the Ti/Si molar ratio of 0.1. Morphology of the composites can be controlled by the incorporation of different amounts of titanium species. Highly curved shapes such as winding, wormlike, and wheat grain-like particles were obtained by this direct synthetic method. Acidity and zinc acetate concentration can also affect the morphology of the composites. UV-vis, FTIR and Si-29 MAS NMR results display that titanium species exist both in the framework and extra-framework of the mesoporous SiO2. Wide angle XRD, Raman, and HRSEM results show that the outer surface of the SiO2 (probably Ti-doped) is decorated by round anatase nanocrystallites (probably Si-doped), whereas X-ray mapping results reveal that titanium species are highly dispersed on the final mesoporous composites. The formation mechanism of the mesophase was discussed based on characterization results. Photocatalytic results show that the TiO2-SiO2 composites prepared in this way have high catalytic activity in the photodegradation of isopropanol due to both framework and surface titanium species.
Preparation of Mesoporous Anatase Titania with Large Secondary Mesopores and Extraordinarily High Photocatalytic Performances

Abstract:A mesoporous titania (SN2) with three-dimensional (3D) large secondary mesopores (6.2 nm) highly connecting the mesochannels was prepared employing the method of first synthesizing an ordered 2D hexagonal mesoporous titania-silica nanocomposite (SN1) via "synchronous-assembly" of inorganic precursors with surfactant molecules, then "extracting silica". Our tactic adopts a large amount of silica, a high crystallization temperature and mild silica extraction. The 3D interconnectivities of the resultant mesochannels are quite high, but the mesostructures are retained intact. Titania is fully anatase crystalline with uniform nanocrystals size (11.2 nm) and a high specific surface area (similar to 174 m(2) g(-1)). This strategy is gentle, simple and easily reproducible. SN2 presents extremely-high photocatalytic degradation activities to anionic azo dyes like acid red 1 and reactive brilliant red X3B, which reach 55.9 and 51.1 times that of commercial P25 photocatalyst, even up to 87.0 and 84.7 times that of SN1, respectively; and far higher than that of the contrast sample (CS) possessing 3D small secondary mesopores (2.7 nm). Additionally, SN2 also displays a very high activity to microcystin-LR, which is much higher than that of P25 and CS, respectively. Our results clearly indicate that the large secondary mesopores play a key role in the great increases of activities. Moreover, our photocatalyst is considerably stable and reusable. Such results have hitherto not been seen in the literature. Furthermore, this method would pave the way for the rational design and preparation of ordered mesoporous other metal-oxides with large secondary mesopores and unexpected performances.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 with high photocatalytic activity was synthesized by assembling nanocrystalline particles using dodecylamine (DDA) as organic linkers. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Low-angle XRD and TEM confirmed that the mesoporous TiO2 had a wormhole-like structure. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm showed products retained mesoporosity with a narrow pore size distribution (2.8–4.0nm) and high surface areas (104.4–346.0m2/g) to 673K. TG-DTA analysis revealed that the surfactant had been removed partly in as-synthesized samples. The pH value affected the order of mesoporous structure. The ordered mesoporous structure would not retain at pH=14. All calcined mesoporous TiO2 showed high photocatalytic activities on photodecomposition of cationic dye X-GL.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of mesoporous TiO 2 photocatalyst were prepared by hydrothermal method using block copolymer P123 as template and Ti (OBu) 4 as titanium source. The microstructure and spectroscopy performance of the prepared TiO 2 were characterized by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, and BJH analysis, and the photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO 2 were examined by measuring the photodegradation of methyl orange , then discussed the best prepared conditions of mesoporous TiO 2 photocatalyst. The results showed that the products were all anatase mesoporous TiO 2 nanopowder, the average particle size is about 7nm and all have the Langmuir type IV pore structure. The best prepared condition: hydrothermal temperature is 160°C, hydrothermal time is 24h, mesoporous TiO 2 photocatalyst has the BET surface area of 146m 2 /g , it’s photocatalytic degradation rate is 97.07% in an hour.

Abstract:Mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been assembled inside the macropores of diatom frustules by sonochemical condensation of titania precursor, and then thermal treated at an elevated temperature. The resulting hierarchical macro/mesoporous-structures of the TiO2 inside diatom were confirmed by characterizations of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The amount of TiO2 inside the periodic macropores of diatom was controlled by varying the sonication time. It was found that the resultant composite with only 30 wt% TiO2 loading delivered a high photocatalytic performance, even better than that of pure P25. This is attributed to its hierarchical macro/mesoporous structure as it provides a large number of accessible active sites for efficient transportations of guest species to framework binding sites. Other macro/mesoporous structures with a nearly endless variety of functional chemistries and shapes are expected to be produced, leading to a range of novel applications in remediation, molecular transportation and environmental field by using this facile strategy.

Abstract:Cubic-based ordered mesoporous TiO2 thin films were prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly method through a carefully controlling the hydrolysis/condensation conditions. The obtained sample exhibits mesoporous structure with a narrow pore size distribution. The TiO2 thin films have thick inorganic walls composed of nanocrystalline.anatase. A reasonable explanation is also proposed to elucidate the formation of thick and stable mesoporous TiO2 films. The mesoporous TiO2 exhibits good photocatalytic activity. Nearly all the methyl orange has been degraded by the mesoporous TiO2 calcined at 500 degrees C.

Abstract:A series of titania-modified MCM-41 have been synthesized from varying three kinds of titanium precursors [Ti(OBun)(4), Ti(OBun)(3)(acac), Ti(OBun)(2)(acac)(2)] respectively and mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41, in which titania existed as single or double layers. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption-desorption at 77 K, Si-29 MAS NMR, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as by solid state diffuse reflectance UV-VIS spectroscopy. The titanium precursor was cocondensed with the active silanol groups of MCM-41 via Si-O-Ti bonds and the resulting titania modified the mesopore walls of MCM-41 after hydrolysis and calcination. In the titania-modified MCM-41 samples, although the titania species were in an amorphous state and in tetrahedral coordination rather than octahedral coordination, which exists extensively in crystalline titania, they exhibited high photocatalytic activity for the photodecomposition of phenol and the photoreduction of Cr(vi) to Cr(iii).
Preparation and photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO2 derived from hydrolysis condensation with TX-100 as template

Abstract:Mesoporous titania powder was prepared by hydrolysis condensation process using a non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) as template. The template could be easily removed by washing the precipitation with water and ethanol at room temperature as confirmed by FT-IR. XRD pattern demonstrates that as-synthesized product had a framework of anatase phase. TEM image shows the product possessed disordered nanopore channels and HRTEM shows the framework consisted of crystalline particles. N2 adsorption–desorption analysis indicates that the as-synthesized sample had a BET surface area of 241m2/g and a narrow pore size distribution centered at 4.9nm. The mesoporous titania could efficiently degrade methyl orange under UV irradiation and showed a stronger photocatalytic activity than commercial titania P25. Effects of calcination on crystallinity, pore structure and photocatalytic activity were also studied.

Abstract:Ordered mesostructured TiO2 thin films were constructed through a method that combined sol-gel with evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). It was found that the calcination temperature, as well as the type of block copolymer, could vary the TiO2 mesoporous structure. Based on tension stress calculated by the surface energy of crystallites and the compression calculated by interface energy between the crystallites, the thermodynamic study for the sample had been carried out and the critical crystallite size expression of the mesoporous film was presented for the prediction of the thermal stability of the mesoporous structure at high temperature. It was also found that varying the mass ratio of templating agent to inorganic precursor could adjust the pore size of mesoporous TiO2. The pore size regulating mechanism had been discussed. The sample calcined at 450-500 °C, which had a higher specific surface area and larger pore size, exhibited higher photocatalyzed destruction capability of Methylene Blue.

Abstract:In this article, an ordered two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal mesoporous anatase crystals-silica nanocomposite was first synthesized using synchronous-assembly of surfactant and inorganic precursors molecules, and then a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected mesoporous anatase TiO2 was prepared via an "extracting silica" approach. The results show that the mesopore channels in our titania are highly connected by plenty of 3D uniform intrawall mesopores while retaining mesostructural integrity and regularity. The TiO2 prepared is completely anatase crystalline with uniform nanocrystals (13.0 nm in size) and a high specific surface area (similar to 145 m(2)/g). This method is mild, simple and can be easily repeatable. The photocatalytic degradation rates of Acid Red 1 (0.173 min(-1)) and microcystin-LR (2.57 min(-1)) on the interconnected mesoporous TiO2 are very high, which are 41.6 and 2.85 times higher than that of the parent sample; 29.2 and 7.20 times that of P25 photocatalyst, respectively. These results clearly demonstrated that the 3D interconnected mesostructure played a key role in the activity increments. In addition, our photocatalysts are considerably stable and reusable. To the best of our knowledge, such results have not been seen in the literature before. Furthermore, the fundamentals of this study would provide new insights for the rational design and preparation of 3D highly interlinked mesoporous metal-oxides with unique photocatalytic performances. Simple preparation of sub-micron mesoporous TiO2 spheres consisting of anatase nanocrystals

Abstract:Mesoporous anatase titania spheres with an average size of approx. 400nm were facilely prepared at low temperature by treating the titanium glycolate precursor spheres with hot water (∼100°C). The surface of the precursor particle became rough and the anatase phase began to form when it was treated with hot water for 1.5h. With increasing treatment time, the crystallinity of the particles was improved, and the nanoporous structure further formed in the interior of the spheres. When the treatment time was prolonged to 6h, the mesoporous anatase spheres were finally obtained, and they were composed of interconnected nanocrystals with the size less than 15nm and pores with the mean size of 8.31nm. The as-prepared mesoporous anatase titania spheres exhibited excellent adsorption capacity and better photocatalytic activity compared with the commercial photocatalyst P-25 due to the large specific surface area. Ostwald ripening and surface energy effects were presumed to play an important role in the formation of mesoporous structure and anatase nanocrystals.

Abstract:Mesoporous molecular sieves possessing high mesopore volumes and large specific surface areas were prepared and characterized by means of XRD, low temperature N2 adsorption-desorption measurements,FT IR, Raman, UV-visible diffuse reflectance and XPS spectroscopy. The materials contain both framework and extra-framework Ti centers which exhibit selective oxidation catalytic activity and photocatalytic activity respectively. The catalysis of selective oxidation was studied with the hydroxylation of benzene with hydrogen peroxide and photochemical activity was studied by the yields of · OH and H2O2, respectively.

Abstract:The mesoporous titania, designated MS-TiO2 was successfully prepared via a new combination of pluronic P123 and poly ethylene glycol templates and acetic acid as the hydrolytic retardant with extremely high crystallinity achieved during synthesis process. MS-TiO2 has remarkable thermal stability, biporous mesostructure and superior photocatalytical activity for phenol degradation and mineralization as compared to mesoporous TiO2 prepared using single template systems. The anatase–rutile phase transformation of the MS-TiO2 was not observed up to 800°C. The mesoscale order of MS-TiO2 was retained after thermal treatment up to 450°C as confirmed by low angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses. It maintained its pore properties at high temperature of 700°C with a significant pore size 10.4nm and pore volume 0.11cm3/g. MS-TiO2 has biporous mesostructure with the small mesopore of 5.5nm and the large mesopore of 8.7nm in mean pore diameters. The MS-TiO2 showed higher photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation than mesoporous titania prepared using single templates and standard system of Degussa P25. The remarkably high catalytic activity of the MS-TiO2 is attributed to its high crystallinity and biporous mesostructure. The phenol mineralization was confirmed using high performance liquid chromatography and total organic carbon analyses.
