Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
Controllable Hydrothermal Synthesis, Optical and Photocatalytic Properties of TiO2 Nanostructures

Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Synthesis of Well-Ordered Mesoporous Titania with Tunable Phase Content and High Photoactivity

Abstract:Using TiCl4 and Ti(OBu)(4) as the precursors and Pluronic P123 as the template, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) is successfully prepared by the nonhydrolytic evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method with a three-dimensional mesostructure obtained. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD) show that the pore wall is composed of both anatase and rutile phases. Transmission electron micrograph observations (TEM) reveal a well-ordered open-pore mesostructure. N-2 adsorption analysis exhibits a narrow pore size distribution. Photodegradation of phenol shows that the sample has a better photoactivity than Degussa P25. Further investigations on the effect of the "acid-base pair" find that by changing the molar ratio of TiCl4/Ti(OBu)(4), both the pore texture and phase composition can be well-controlled. A high content of TiCl4 is considered to favor the formation of regular mesostructures and a proper weight ratio of anatase/rutile as well, which can finally affect the photocatalytic efficiency of the sample.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel lyophilizated evaporation-induced self-assembly (L-EISA) approach for morphology controllable TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures in pure water-based system was developed. The resulting TiO2 nanostructures were obtained by controlling the self-assembly and growth of the P123 and TiO2 sol complex. During the synthesis procedure, the aging temperature influences the self-assembled behavior of the template in the solution, the interaction between P123 and TiO2 sol particles, and the crystal growth of TiO2. At the aging temperature of 50 degrees C (P-0.5-TiO2-50), TiO2 hierarchical nanostructure composed of radical array of nanoneedle and some adhered nanocrystallines were obtained. Lyophilization was employed to retain the structure and prevent the further growth of TiO2 crystalline during the drying process. After calcination, the structures were well preserved. P-0.5-TiO2-50 possesses a relatively high surface area of similar to 210.3 m(2) g(-1) and a large average pore size of similar to 12.56 nm. With the high surface area, crystalline and specific nanostructure, P-0.5-TiO2-50 exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity on the degradation of RhB under solar-light. Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O assembled with radial nanowires was fabricated via a template-free solution-based reaction, and was converted to TiO2 with distinct phases and morphologies by the subsequent acid-treating or annealing. The HCl treatment achieved the controllable conversion from titanate nanowires to rutile nanorods by varying the temperature and acidity. When compared with the as-synthesized titanate nanowires and the thoroughly transformed rutile nanorods, their mixtures were found to exhibit the best dye adsorption ability towards rhodamine B and methylene blue in water. The H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O nanowires decomposed in sequence to anatase and rutile after a subsequent calcination in air, via an intermediate phase of H2Ti4O9 center dot H2O. The hierarchical structure could be retained up to 800 degrees C. When utilized as photocatalysts to degrade rhodamine B in water, the 550 degrees C-calcinated powder, with mixed phases of anatase, rutile, and srilankite, demonstrated the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:The effects of heat treatment, dopant type and thickness of sol layer, on the formation and stability of ordered TiO2 mesostructure were investigated. Higher ageing temperature facilitates the separation of organic phase and inorganic phase, while thinner sol layer facilitates the formation of homogeneous system and improves the mesostructural order of TiO2. Lanthanum dopant, which is more electropositive than Ti, can improve the thermal stability of mesostructure by enhancing the strength of Ti–O bond. On the contrary, Fe and Pd dopants, which are more electronegative than Ti, decrease the thermal stability of mesostructure. Furthermore, La doped mesoporous TiO2 shows high activity in the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B under the irradiation of visible light.

Abstract:A simple synthetic method to prepare thermally stable La3+ doped mesoporous titania with highly crystallized walls and high photocatalytic activity is reported. The crystalline framework derives from the assembly of nano-anatase particles. La3+ doping is a critical factor to increase the stability and photocatalytic activity of mesoporous titania. The mesoporous materials were characterized by low angle and wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N2 adsorption–desorption and UV–visible absorbance spectroscopy. Characteristic results clearly show that La3+ doped samples have highly regular mesoporous structures, and their crystallized walls are composed of nano-anatase particles. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared mesoporous titania powders was evaluated from an analysis of the photo-degradation of methyl orange. The results indicate that sample doped with 0.25 at% La3+, has the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO2 with high photocatalytic activity was synthesized by assembling nanocrystalline particles using dodecylamine (DDA) as organic linkers. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Low-angle XRD and TEM confirmed that the mesoporous TiO2 had a wormhole-like structure. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm showed products retained mesoporosity with a narrow pore size distribution (2.8–4.0nm) and high surface areas (104.4–346.0m2/g) to 673K. TG-DTA analysis revealed that the surfactant had been removed partly in as-synthesized samples. The pH value affected the order of mesoporous structure. The ordered mesoporous structure would not retain at pH=14. All calcined mesoporous TiO2 showed high photocatalytic activities on photodecomposition of cationic dye X-GL.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs photocatalysts containing two or more crystal phases have customarily been synthesized at high temperature using complicated procedures or expensive equipment, accompanied by the formation of by-products. Therefore, here, we propose an effective acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation strategy to directly synthesize mesoporous TiO2 with controllable phase junctions. In the method, poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) is used as the structure directing agent to produce mesostructure, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used as the acid regulator and coordination agent to adjust the hydrolysis and condensation modes of Ti4+, thereby controlling the crystal structure and phase junctions of synthesized mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs. Furthermore, since the heterophase junctions and mesostructure effectively improve the separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-holes, the obtained R74B26 with unique brookite and rutile phase junctions owns the highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained samples, the evolution rate of H2 is 8.98 mmol h‐1−1 g−1. This work will open up new perspectives toward the synthesis of mesoporous polycrystalline material for various potential applications.

Controllable and Repeatable Synthesis of Thermally Stable Anatase Nanocrystal-Silica Composites with Highly Ordered Hexagonal Mesostructures.

Abstract:In this article, we report a controllable and reproducible approach to prepare highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous crystalline TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites with variable Ti/Si ratios (0 to infinity). XRD, TEM, and N2 sorption techniques have been used to systematically investigate the pore wall structure, and thermal stability functioned with the synthetic conditions. The resultant materials are ultra highly stable (over 900 degrees C), have large uniform pore diameters (approximately 6.8 nm), and have high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface areas (approximately 290 m2/g). These mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 composites were obtained using titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors and triblock copolymer P123 as a template based on the solvent evaporation-induced co-self-assembly process under a large amount of HCl. Our strategy was the synchronous assembly of titanate and silicate oligomers with triblock copolymer P123 by finely tuning the relative humidity of the surrounding atmosphere and evaporation temperature according to the Ti/Si ratio. We added a large amount of acidity to lower condensation and polymerization rates of TIPO and accelerate the rates for TEOS molecules. TEM and XRD measurements clearly show that the titania is made of highly crystalline anatase nanoparticles, which are uniformly embedded in the pore walls to form the "bricked-mortar" frameworks. The amorphous silica acts as a glue linking the TiO2 nanocrystals and improves the thermal stability. As the silica contents increase, the thermal stability of the resulting mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites increases and the size of anatase nanocrystals decreases. Our results show that the unique composite frameworks make the mesostructures overwhelmingly stable; even with high Ti/Si ratios (> or =80/20) the stability of the composites is higher than 900 degrees C. The mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activities (which are higher than that for commercial catalyst P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B in aqueous suspension. The excellent photocatalytic activities are ascribed to the bifunctional effect of highly crystallized anatase nanoparticles and high porosity.

Abstract:Morphology and crystalline-phase control of titanium dioxide is a crucial issue in the study of photocatalytic activity. Here, we present a facile synthetic path combing the solgel method with solvothermal treatment to form hybrid mesoporous and microporous TiO2. The TiO2 precursor was obtained by the solgel method, and this was self-assembled into mesopores and micropores by NH4F corrosiveness on the surface of TiO2 under hydrothermal conditions. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterise the titania powders. The results reveal that NH4F not only improved the formation of the crystallised anatase phase but also served as a corrosive agent modified on the surface of TiO2 precursors. Defective voids among these nanoparticles formed micropores by hydrothermal reaction of NH4F and TiO2 over a long time. When the NH4F concentration was 1.0 mol.L-1, micropores became dominant,and few mesopores were obtained, and this results in a smaller average pore size. Thus, mesoporous and microporous structures were formed. Furthermore, these crystallised mesoporous and microporous anatase titania nanoparticles with uniform structure and high surface area have a higher photocatalytic activity for azo dye degradation under near UV irradiation.

Abstract:Mesoporous materials with crystalline frameworks have been widely explored in many fields due to their unique structure and crystalline feature, but accurate manipulations over crystalline scaffolds, mainly composed of uncontrolled polymorphs, are still lacking. Herein, we explored a controlled crystallization-driven monomicelle assembly approach to construct a type of uniform mesoporous TiO2 particles with atomically aligned single-crystal frameworks. The resultant mesoporous TiO2 single-crystal particles possess an angular shape similar to 80 nm in diameter, good mesoporosity (a high surface area of 112 m(2) g(-1) and a mean pore size at 8.3 nm), and highly oriented anatase frameworks. By adjusting the evaporation rate during assembly, such a facile solution-processed strategy further enables the regulation of the particle size and mesopore size without the destruction of the oriented crystallites. Such a combination of ordered mesoporosity and crystalline orientation provides both effective mass and charge transportation, leading to a significant increase in the hydrogen generation rate. A maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 12.5 mmol g(-1) h(-1) can be realized, along with great stability under solar light. Our study is envisaged to extend the possibility of mesoporous single crystal growth to a range of functional ceramics and semiconductors toward advanced applications.

Abstract:Fe3+ doped mesoporous TiO2 with ordered mesoporous structure were successfully prepared by the solvent evaporation-induced self-assembly process using P123 as soft template. The properties and structure of Fe3+ doped mesoporous TiO2 were characterized by means of XRD, EPR, BET, TEM, and UV–vis absorption spectra. The characteristic results clearly show that the amount of Fe3+ dopant affects the mesoporous structure as well as the visible light absorption of the catalysts. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared mesoporous TiO2 was evaluated from an analysis of the photodegradation of methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The results indicate that the sample of 0.50%Fe–MTiO2 exhibits the highest visible light photocatalytic activity compared with other catalysts.

Abstract:Multiphasic titanium dioxide (TiO2) possessing abundant heterophase junctions have been widely used for various photocatalytic applications. Current synthesis of multiphasic TiO2 mainly involves the process of thermal treatment and multiple steps of rigorous reactions, which is adverse to controlling the crystal phases and phase ratios of multiphasic TiO2. Meanwhile, the resulting products have relatively low surface area and nonporous structure. Here, a facile polymer-assisted coordination-mediated self-assembly method to synthesize mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs with controllable heterophase junctions and large surface area by using polyethylenimine as the porogen in an acidic aqueous synthesis system is reported. Using this approach, the crystal phases (triphase, biphase, and monophase) and phase compositions (0-100%) are easily tailored by selecting the suitable acidic media. Furthermore, the specific surface areas (77-228 m(2) g(-1)) and pore sizes (2.9-10.1 nm) are readily tailored by changing the reaction temperature. The photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs is evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The triphasic TiO2 exhibits an excellent photocatalytic H-2 generation rate of 3.57 mmol h(-1) g(-1) as compared to other polymorphs, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterophase junctions and mesostructure. The band diagram of possible electron transfer pathway for triphasic TiO2 is also elucidated.

Abstract:Highly dispersed TiO2/SBA-15 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by solvothermal treatment using titanium n-butoxide(TB) and carboxylate-modified SBA-15(COOH/SBA-15) as raw materials.The good dispersive carboxyl groups of COOH/SBA-15 coordinated with TB molecules to anchor them.After solvothermal treatment,the TB molecules were transformed into TiO2 nanoparticles and finally formed the TiO2/SBA-15 products.The products were calcined to improve the crystallization of TiO2 and to remove the organic compounds.As-obtained TiO2/SBA-15 photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),nitrogen adsorption,Fourier transform infrared(FI-IR) spectroscopy,and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Analytical results showed that the as-obtained TiO2/SBA-15 photocatalysts possessed a better mesoporous structure and a larger specific surface area.The highly crystalline anatase TiO2 nanocrystals dispersed well on the surface of SBA-15.Rhodamine B(RhB),as a photodegradation target,was used to evaluate photocatalytic performance under UV light irradiation.The as-obtained TiO2/SBA-15 photocatalysts exhibited much better photocatalytic activity compared with the photocatalysts prepared by a post-synthesis impregnation method.

Abstract:A novel ligand-assisted assembly approach is demonstrated for the synthesis of thermally stable and large-pore ordered mesoporous titanium dioxide with a highly crystalline framework by using diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) as a template and titanium isopropoxide (TIPO) as a precursor. Small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and N-2-sorption measurements indicate that the obtained TiO2 materials possess an ordered primary cubic mesostructure with large, uniform pore diameters of about 16.0 nm, and high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas of -112 m(2) g(-1), as well as high thermal stability (similar to 700 degrees C). High resolution TEM and wide-angle XRD measurements clearly illustrate the high crystallinity of the mesoporous titania with an anatase structure in the pore walls. It is worth mentioning that, in this process, in addition to tetrahydrofuran as a solvent, acetylacetone was employed as a coordination agent to avoid rapid hydrolysis of the titanium precursor. Additionally, stepped evaporation and heating processes were adopted to control the condensation rate and facilitate the assembly of the ordered mesostructure, and ensure the formation of fully polycrystalline anatase titania frameworks without collapse of the mesostructure. By employing the obtained mesoporous and crystallized TiO2 as the photoanode in a dye-sensitized solar cell, a high power-conversion efficiency (5.45%) can be achieved in combination with the N719 dye, which shows that this mesoprous titania is a great potential candidate as a catalyst support for photonic-conversion applications.

Abstract:Ordered mesostructured TiO2 thin films were constructed through a method that combined sol-gel with evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA). It was found that the calcination temperature, as well as the type of block copolymer, could vary the TiO2 mesoporous structure. Based on tension stress calculated by the surface energy of crystallites and the compression calculated by interface energy between the crystallites, the thermodynamic study for the sample had been carried out and the critical crystallite size expression of the mesoporous film was presented for the prediction of the thermal stability of the mesoporous structure at high temperature. It was also found that varying the mass ratio of templating agent to inorganic precursor could adjust the pore size of mesoporous TiO2. The pore size regulating mechanism had been discussed. The sample calcined at 450-500 °C, which had a higher specific surface area and larger pore size, exhibited higher photocatalyzed destruction capability of Methylene Blue.
