Abstract:The microstructure of as-deposited granular Co-Ag thin films is investigated by high resolution electron microscopy. Our results suggest that the thin films consist of two separate phases. The crystallized Co particles, with nonuniform size and preferential lattice orientations [110], [111], [112], [100] in the direction of the him surface normal, are directly observed. There is a tendency that two connecting grains have two groups of parallel lattice planes.

Abstract:A series of ion-beam cosputtered CoAg granular films with 22 at% cobalt content, annealed at different temperatures (400–700K), have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. These films form with individual columnar grains. Following effects have occurred for the granular films upon annealing: phase separation progressed and roughly completed, while the grain growth is not obvious amorphous area has decreased in the sample annealed at 700K. In term of the giant magnetoresistance exhibited by these films, these observations mean that fine difference in microstructures can lead to the obvious change of the GMR behavior in the granular film.

Abstract:The microstructures of as-deposited Co-Ag nano-granular films are characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution electron microscopy. In as-deposited films, there is a strong tendency for phase separation to occur; Co and Ag particles coexist in the films. The average size of Co grains varies with the Co concentration. Ag particles have the preferential lattice orientation [110] and Co particles have lattice orientations [110], [111], [112], and [100] in the direction of the film surface normal. There is a tendency for two connecting grains to have two groups of parallel lattice planes.

Abstract:A series of Co x Ag1−x (0 ≤x < 100 at.%) granular films were deposited onto glass substrates with the thickness on the order of 400 nm using the ion-beam cosputtering technique at different substrate temperatures. Systematical investigations were made on the Giant MagnetoResistance (GMR) effect and microstructures in these thin granular films. The magnetoresistance ratio strongly depends on cobalt concentration, substrate temperature, and the optimal value of GMR was observed in Co22Ag78 sample prepared at a temperature of 300 K. Microstructures of these films are closely related to the fabricating process, and thus influence the GMR.

Abstract:The nano-granular magnetic films were investigated using the micromagnetics method in this paper. The nano-granular magnetic film model studied consisted of an aggregate of 122 spherical nano.-granules with an fcc structure. The computational results showed that the effect of the dipolar interaction of the system on the static magnetic structure is remarkable, while the effect of exchange interaction is indistinc. The frequency dependent permeability spectra of granular films with different volume ratio of magnetic components were simulated and the percolation phenomena of nanostructural magnetic films were extensively analyzed. Thus, the percolation threshold of the system studied was obtained according to the effective medium theory. Furthermore, the design of nano-granular magnetic films with large magnetic losses were carried out.

Abstract:The microstructures of as-deposited and annealed CoAg granular films fabricated by ion-beam cosputtering technique were characterized using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) methods. For the Co22Ag78 sample, the changes in size and shape of the nanoscale cobalt granules embedded in the film closely depend on the annealing temperature (TA). Real time observation in situ of TEM together with FMR spectra indicate that the size and shape of the cobalt granules evolve primarily along the film plane during the annealing process. Also, the FMR results indicate that the cobalt granules are still single domain particles embedded in the film as the sample is annealed up to 700 K.

Abstract:An aluminum film system,deposited on the silicone oil drop surfaces by vapor deposition method,has been fabricated and its surface morphologies as well as growth mechanism have been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy.The granular size of Al film on oil surface is smaller than that of Al film on the silicon substrate.It is observed that the granular size distribution is inhomogeneous and the surface fluctuation is moderately large in the film samples.Furthermore,we find that the perpendicular fluctuation of the lower surface is more remarkable than that of the upper surface of the Al film.Near the edge of the silicone oil drop,an anomalous wedge shaped structure with a slope of 10-4—10-5 spontaneously forms and its growth mechanism can be interpreted as thethermal expansion of the liquid substrates.

Abstract:The correlation between the GMR effect and the microstructures in ion-beam co-sputtered CoAg granular films was systematically studied. The highest magnetoresistance was observed in ${\mathrm{Co}}_{22}$${\mathrm{Ag}}_{78}$ samples. It is sensitive to the annealing treatment and to the size of the cobalt granules. The microstructures of the sample were studied by a variety of structural techniques. HREM provides a clear two-dimensional image of as-deposited ${\mathrm{Co}}_{22}$${\mathrm{Ag}}_{78}$ samples. Real-time observation of TEM together with FMR indicates that the shapes and sizes of cobalt granules evolve primarily in plane during the annealing process. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Abstract:The growth of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) on Ag(100) surface from monolayer to multilayer was investigated by low-energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). At monolayer coverage, ZnPc molecules form an ordered film with molecular planes parallel to the substrate. The same structure is maintained as the film thickness increases. HREELS analysis shows that intermolecular pi-pi interaction dominates during the film growth from monolayer to multilayer. The pi-d interaction between the adsorbates and the substrate is only applicable in the first adlayer. Stronger intermolecular-layer interaction is observed at higher coverages. Abstract:Particulate coatings produced by electrospray deposition (ESD) of ethyl cellulose particles are found to widen over time. We hypothesize that during the ESD process, the electrospray expands due to repulsion caused by accumulated electrostatic charge in the film. The radial profiles of film thickness, mass density (per unit area), and porosity (gas volume fraction) have been determined as a function of several factors which influence electrostatic charging, namely, collection time, relative humidity, and deposition flux. The mass density has been determined from the local film thickness attained upon thermal annealing, which is largest near the center of the spray. The local porosity is lowest at the film center (at between 0.5 and 0.6), whereas across the film, it is roughly uniform (between 0.6 and 0.7) for deposition in a dry ambient, and slightly higher and more variable for humid ambient deposition. The granular films are compact (with low fractality) as expected for ballistic deposition (large Peclet number).

Abstract:(Fe83Co17)(x)Ag100-x granular films (x=40, 45, 50, 55, 60) were grown on the substrates of glass using the magnetron sputtering system. The structure, GMR and magnetic property of (Fe83Co17)(55)Ag-45 granular film, which were as-deposited and vacuum annealed, were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), a four-point probe method and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results of magnetic resistance measurement show that GMR of the sample (Fe83Co17)(55)Ag-45 granular film with 400 nm thickness gets the maximum, -8.1%. XRD results show that microstructure of (Fe83Co17)(55)Ag-45 granular film has changed, which leads GMR to firstly increase and then decrease, and the maximum is -8.3% at 150 degrees C. Meanwhile, the magnetic hysteresis loop illustrates that the coercive force of (Fe83Co17)(55)Ag-45 granular film increases with the annealing temperature increasing.

Abstract:Fe–Ag granular films were prepared using magnetron sputtering. The magnetoresistance value of Fe–Ag film prepared at the sputtering pressure of 0.1Pa is about 24% at room temperature. X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer measurement indicate that some magnetic particles were separated from the Fe–Ag supersaturated solid solution without any heat treatment. The phase separation and the stronger texture of film may result in the higher giant magnetoresistance value.

Abstract:A number of structural analysis methods were employed to investigate the microstructures of ion-beam co-sputtering of Co x Ag1−x (0⩽x⩽100 at%) granular films. Forx=22 at%, the sample which has the optimal giant magnetoresistance at room temperature, there exists either crystallized or highly disordered regions shown by high-resolution electron microscopy. At the boundary between cobalt granules and the silver matrix, lattice mismatch was formed, leading to roughness of the interfaces. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the samples had f c c structure at lowx, with (111) texture, and the h c p structure gradually appeared as x>75 at %. Relative lattice expansion was observed asx increased.

Abstract:Co-Cu and FeCo-Cu granular films were prepared by DC (or RF) magnetron sputtering and post-deposition annealing. The influence of annealing conditions (temperature, duration) on GMR has been investigated systematically. It is found that the cumulative isothermal annealing at an optimal temperature (moderately high) promotes the precipitation of magnetic grains but limits their excessive growth, and therefore, leads to more homogenous and smaller particles, which is in favor of the GMR improvement. By a combined study of TEM, magnetization and GMR, it is believed that the GMR in these granular films mainly originates from the spin-dependent scattering of conducting electrons in the surfaces between magnetic particles and Cu matrix; especially, the very fine particles with a diameter of a few nm may be most effective for spin-dependent scattering.

Abstract:A series of Co-Ag granular films were deposited onto a glass substrate with a thickness on the order of 400 nm using the ion-beam cosputtering technique. Granular films ranging in composition from about 0-100% fraction by volume of cobalt have been prepared. Polar Kerr rotation spectra of the films were measured at room temperature in the wavelength region between 400 and 850 nm. A maximum Kerr rotation angle (θK) of 0.28° was obtained when a magnetic field of 10 kOe was applied perpendicular to the film plane. Our results indicate that the Co particle density and the microstructure between the Co particles and Ag matrix may play an important role in the Kerr rotation.

Abstract:Despite intense research on high entropy films, the mechanism of film growth and the influence of key factors remain incompletely understood. In this study, high entropy films consisting of five elements (FeCoNiCrAl) with columnar and nanometer-scale grains were prepared by magnetron sputtering. The high entropy film growth mechanism, including the formation of the amorphous domain, equiaxial nanocrystalline structure and columnar crystal was clarified by analyzing the microstructure in detail. Besides, the impacts of the important deposition parameters including the substrate temperature, the powder loaded in the target, and the crystal orientation of the substrate on the grain size and morphology, phase structure, crystallinity and elemental uniformity were revealed. The mechanical properties of high entropy films with various microstructure features were investigated by nanoindentation. With the optimized grain size and microstructure, the film deposited at 350 °C using a power of 100 W exhibits the highest hardness of 11.09 GPa. Our findings not only help understanding the mechanisms during the high entropy film deposition, but also provide guidance in manufacturing other novel high entropy films.

Abstract:Epitaxial films of heavy fermion CeCu2Ge2 and CeFe2Ge2 are grown on DyScO3 and MgO substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. The growth begins via island nucleation leading to a granular morphology. The grains grow flat with c-axis orientation after nucleating, as indicated by in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and ex-situ analysis including atomic force microscopy (AFM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). These single phase films show similar temperature dependent transport to single crystals of the materials indicating that similar collective order occurs in the films as in single crystals.

Abstract:It is experimentally reported that the grain growth rate for nanostructured material is much lower than that which the conventional grain growth theory predicts.Various theoretical models are developed to explain the abnormal grain growth behavior for nanostructured materials.The general developments of these theoretical models are summarized,into which two kinds of models are divided.One is the dynamic model,which inhibits the grain growth by pinning grain boundaries and includes the solute drag,triple junction drag and second phase drag models.The other is the thermodynamic model,which retards the grain growth by reducing the grain boundary energy and thus decreases the driving force for grain growth and includes the solute segregation,vacancy injection models.Each model is described and analyzed and the development direction is eventually prospected.

Abstract:A series of CoxAg1-x(0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 100 at.%) granular films were prepared using the ion-beam cosputtering technique at different substrate temperatures. Systematic investigations have been carried out on the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect and characterization of microstructures of these samples. The magnetoresistance ratio depends strongly on cobalt concentration, substrate temperature, and annealing treatment. The optimal value of GMR was observed in Co22Ag78 Sample prepared at the temperature of 300 K. Microstructures of as-deposited and annealed samples were characterized by structural analyses. For Co22Ag78 sample, real-time in situ observation by TEM together with FMR spectra indicates that the size and shape of cobalt granules evolve primarily along the film plane during annealing. The results of FMR also provide that the cobalt granules remain single-domain particles after annealing at temperatures up to 700 K.

Abstract:In situ microscopy of colloidal nanocrystal growth offers a unique opportunity to acquire direct and straightforward data for assessing classical growth models. Here, we observe the growth trajectories of individual Ag nanoparticles in solution using in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy. For the first time, we provide experimental evidence of growth rates of Ag nanoparticles in the presence of Pt in solution that are significantly faster than predicted by Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner theory. We attribute these observed anomalous growth rates to the synergistic effects of the catalytic properties of Pt and the electron beam itself. Transiently reduced Pt atoms serve as active sites for Ag ions to grow, thereby playing a key role in controlling the growth kinetics. Electron beam illumination greatly increases the local concentration of free radicals, thereby strongly influencing particle growth rate and the resulting particle morphology. Through a systematic investigation, we demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing these synergistic effects for controlling the growth rates and particle morphologies at the nanoscale. Our findings not only expand the current scope of crystal growth theory, but may also lead to a broader scientific application of nanocrystal synthesis.
