Abstract:The oxide films were prepared by thermal oxidation on the surfaces of Ti6Al7Nb(TAN) and Ti6Al4V(TAV) alloys and characterized by optical microscopy,Vickers hardness test,X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS).The results indicate that the film on the surface of TAN is thinner than that on TAV and has stronger adhesion with substrate.The hardness of films on both alloys increase with elevating temperature or extending time at high temperature.However,due to the multilayered porous structure,the hardness decreases when temperature rises up to 1000℃ for TAN or 900℃ for TAV.The surface analysis of films oxidized for 1h under different temperatures shows that the oxidation behaviour of Nb is more sensitive to temperature than that of V.Both Nb and V play an important role in the oxidation process of TAN and TAV alloys,respectively.
Anti-Corrosion Property of Atomic Layer Deposition Films for Anodized Aluminum

Abstract:Single and multilayer of Al2O3 and TiO2 were fabricated on anodized aluminum by atomic layer deposition. The effect of processing parameters on pore sealing and anti-corrosion property was studied. It is concluded that the micropores on anodized aluminum could be sealed by atomic layer deposition oxide films through SEM and staining experiments. The anti-corrosive property is affected mainly by the film thickness and process temperature. The acidic drip and salt spray test shows that the anti-corrosion property is enhanced as the film thickness increase. With the similar thickness, Al2O3/TiO2 multilayer film has the best anti-corrosion property, while the single Al2O3 layer appears the poorest. The complementary roles between two basic materials result in the enhanced application property.

Abstract:Titanium samples are disposed in sulphuric acid for anodic oxidation.Research shows that voltage,temperature,oxidation time have a certain effect on the color of anodizing film.The voltage is the main factor which affect the color and thickness of the film.The uniformity and continuity are affected by the mass concentration of sulphuric electrolyte.The thickness of the oxide layer is propotional to the oxidation time until it reaches the upper limitation.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used in industry because of its excellent properties , including high corrosion resistance and high specific strength and non-magnetism . However , titanium alloys have poor oxidation resistance and low coefficient of heat conduction .Film modifications are efficient approach to cope with these issues.In this work, the state-of-the-art of wear resistance modifications , oxidation resistance modifications , erosion resistance modifications and electrochemical functionalizations have been reviewed .According to the applications of titanium alloys and features of film technology , the developing directions of film modifications for titanium alloys are proposed .

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the variation of the corrosion resistance of anodized oxidation film on titanium by electrochemical methods.METHODS:TiO2 nanotube layer was formed on Ti surface by anodization. The morphology was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the crystal phase was analyzed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) before and after annealing. Polarization curves were examined by electrochemical methods.RESULTS:Titanium oxide nanotubes with 80 nm diameter and 400 nm length was seen on Ti after anodization. The annealing nanotubes was anatase crystalline phase by X-ray diffraction analysis. The self-corrosion potential and break-down potential of smooth Ti were significantly lower than TiO2 nanotubes by anodization (P < 0.05). The self-corrosion current and passived current were significantly higher than TiO2 nanotubes by anodization (P < 0.05). Annealing improved the corrosion resistance of anodized oxidation film on titanium.CONCLUSION:The results of electrochemical examinations indicate that the TiO2 nanotubes by anodization increases the corrosion resistance of titanium.

Abstract:This study investigated the morphology,struc-ture and tribological properties of the three samples pro-duced by anodic oxidation of Ti10V2Fe3Al in a sulfuric/phosphoric acid electrolyte(SPA),a near-neutral sodium tartrate electrolyte without nanoparticles(STA)and a near-neutral sodium tartrate electrolyte with polytetrafluo-roethylene(PTFE)nanoparticles(CA)in suspension.The STA film had a surface full of bulges and cracks,the SPA film was porous,and the CA film was nanoporous.The SPA film was mainly composed of anatase TiO2,whereas the STA and CA films were mainly amorphous TiO2 with little anatase.The tribological tests indicated that the SPA sample had a lower wear resistance than the titanium alloy substrate,which was attributed to the shedding of abrasive debris,leading to rapid wear.Both STA and CA samples exhibited much lower wear rates than the titanium alloy substrate,and CA sample displayed the lowest wear rate attributed to the formation of a lubricating layer by PTFE nanoparticles.The wear mechanisms are proposed.

Abstract:With the continuously rapid development of materials science, better properties are equably required in the area of material surface engineering, especially the surface friction and high-temperature oxidation resistance of titanium alloy. It is a great approach to select a scientific way for surface treatment to improve the surface performance so as to obtain surface films/coatings/layers. It can provide a vital latent remedy to the insufficient high-temperature oxidation resistance and wear resistance of titanium alloys. Pack cementation is a reliable means at present by virtue of its distinct composition, covering pollution-free and the firm metallurgical bonding between the alloying coating and the matrix. In the last few years, with the growing demands for the surface performance of materials in multifarious harsh environments, the coating obtained by pack cementation is developing toward controlling coating composition accurately and applying it to complex parts. This review opens with an abbreviated introduction of pack cementation technology. The recent developments of pack cementation technology for enhancing diverse surface properties are scientifically reviewed in the aspects of background, previous research results and the future development directions.

Abstract:Titanium and titanium alloys are excellent candidates in national economics and defense industry.Due to the disadvantages of titanium and its alloys,some surface treatments are adopted to improve the application characteristics.The advanced and effective methods of surface treatment on titanium and its alloys were reviewed and extensively discussed in applications,such as chemical treatment,anodic oxidation treatment,electroless plating and electrodeposition,micro-arc oxidation,electrophoretic deposition,nanoelectrodeposition,etc.The practice results show that the application of surface treatment methods can develop and widen the applied fields of titanium and its alloys.

Abstract:Anodic oxidation is a prevalent technique to introduce superior corrosion and wear resistance upon the surface of titanium (Ti) alloys, in which the selection of appropriate electrolytes and defect-sealing strategies is a key. This study aims to address such issues through anodizing Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy in malic acid, followed by a post-sealing treatment with Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs). The characteristics of the samples were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). SEM micrographs reveals that the anodic coating had a surface full of bulges and cracks, and was almost sealed by the following LDHs treatment. XRD pattern indicate that the anodic coating was mainly consisted of amorphous TiO 2 with a small fraction of anatase, but its crystallization degree was increased through the post-sealing. Moreover, electrochemical and tribological measurements demonstrate that corrosion current density was 2.8 x 10(-6), 2.0 x 10(-7), 5.9 x 10(-9) A cm(-2), and wear rate was 1.45 x 10(-3), 1.30 x 10(-4) and 6.90 x 10(-5) mm(3) N-1 m(-1) for respective bare Ti-10V-2Fe-3A1 alloy substrate, anodized specimens without and with the LDHs post treatment. Abstract:In order to study the effect of microarc oxidation modification treatment on the friction properties of titanium alloy surface, the surface treatment layer of Ti-6Al-4V ELI specimen modified by Microarc oxidation surface was sampled, the surface layer hardness, roughness and treatment layer thickness were tested, the microscopic morphology was analyzed, The friction tests of TC4 substrate and micro-arc oxidation treatment surface disc with 25% glass fiber, 15% fiberglass +5% graphite and 60% tin bronze reinforced PTFE pin were carried out, and the results showed that the thickness increased slightly and the surface layer hardness increased by about 75% after the micro-arc oxidation surface modification treatment. Compared with the substrate, the surface roughness is obviously improved, and the friction coefficient of the surface treatment specimen is similar to that of the TC4 titanium alloy substrate, but the wear amount is higher than that of the TC4 titanium alloy substrate.

Abstract:The oxidation performance and tribological properties of the anodized Ti45Al8.5Nb were investigated. Anodization was performed in ethylene glycol containing 0.15 mol/L NH4F. Results showed that the anodized Ti45Al8.5Nb alloy exhibited good resistance against oxidation. After 100 h oxidation at 1000 °C, the mass gain of the anodized Ti45Al8.5Nb alloy was only 0.37 mg/cm2. This is attributed to the generation of protective oxide scale. On the other hand, the hardness and elastic modulus of the anodized Ti45Al8.5Nb alloy decreased and then increased with the prolonging of thermal exposure due to the generation of the Al2O3-enriched outermost oxide layer.

Abstract:The micro-arc oxidation film on TC4 alloy was prepared using a multifunctional micro-arc oxidation (MAO) power source. The effect of nano-titania colloid addition on the growth process, microstructure, and comprehensive mechanical properties of titanium alloy micro-arc oxidation films was studied by gradient concentration. The results show that, with the increase in titanium dioxide colloid content, the intensity of the discharge phenomenon during the MAO process increases, and the average current density gradually increases. The film thickness is gradually increased from 111.06 μm to 159.8 μm, and the roughness first decreases and then increases. The XRD results show that the rutile content in the film layer is increased with titanium dioxide colloid in the electrolyte. This resulted in an increase in the density of the film, and lead to the corrosion resistance of film improved. When the concentration of titanium dioxide colloid is 1.5 g/L, the comprehensive performance of the film is the best.

Abstract:Titanium alloys are acclaimed for their remarkable biocompatibility, high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and stable performance in high and low temperatures. These characteristics render them invaluable in a multitude of sectors, including biomedicine, shipbuilding, aerospace, and daily life. According to the different phases, the alloys can be broadly categorized into α-titanium and β-titanium, and these alloys demonstrate unique properties shaped by their respective phases. The hexagonal close-packed structure of α-titanium alloys is notably associated with superior high-temperature creep resistance but limited plasticity. Conversely, the body-centered cubic structure of β-titanium alloys contributes to enhanced slip and greater plasticity. To optimize these alloys for specific industrial applications, alloy strengthening is often necessary to meet diverse environmental and operational demands. The impact of various processing techniques on the microstructure and metal characteristics of titanium alloys is reviewed and discussed in this research. This article systematically analyzes the effects of machining, shot peening, and surface heat treatment methods, including surface quenching, carburizing, and nitriding, on the structure and characteristics of titanium alloys. This research is arranged and categorized into three categories based on the methods of processing and treatment: general heat treatment, thermochemical treatment, and machining. The results of a large number of studies show that surface treatment can significantly improve the hardness and friction mechanical properties of titanium alloys. At present, a single treatment method is often insufficient. Therefore, composite treatment methods combining multiple treatment techniques are expected to be more widely used in the future. The authors provide an overview of titanium alloy modification methods in recent years with the aim of assisting and promoting further research in the very important and promising direction of multi-technology composite treatment.

Abstract:The thermal oxidation process was performed on biomedical titanium alloys to improve surface properties for the application in artificial cervical disc. The pretreated Ti6Al4V was characterized with XPS, XRD and SEM. The wettability, biotribological behavior and corrosion resistance were evaluated under distilled water and 25wt% bovine serum lubricant. Rutile TiO2 as the main compound was formed with the increase in hardness. The wettability was improved significantly after oxidation. Compared with the untreated, the friction coefficients and wear volumes of treated samples all decreased with about 50% reduction in both dry sliding and lubrication conditions. Corrosion resistance for oxidized samples was also enhanced with a big reduction of corrosion current density and a shift in corrosion potential towards the positive direction.
Study on the photoelectrical performance of anodized titanium sheets

Abstract:Anodization is a widely used method to obtain multicoloured oxidized titanium sheets. However, most researchers paid great attention to the colour-related properties instead of photoelectrical properties of titanium oxide film obtained by anodization. In this work, to study their photoelectrical properties, a series of multicoloured oxidized titanium sheets were prepared by anodization method, and UV–vis absorption and photocurrents were tested. The relationship between anodization voltages/anodization durations and photocurrents of titanium sheets was studied. Results show that titanium sheets have excellent photoelectrical performance. With the increase of anodization voltage, the number of UV–vis absorption peaks increased under visible light which means increasing absorption. When anodization duration increased, absorption band edge also increased in the visible light region, which means the band gap needed to produce charge transfer transition decreased. Under simulated sunlight and applied voltage of +0.4 V, photocurrent increased with the increase of either anodization voltage or anodization duration, and can be expressed by linear equations. In addition, anodization currents were recorded during anodization. Morphology, crystal structure and photoelectrical properties of anodized titanium sheets were characterized. The anodized titanium sheets can not only be used as decorative material in jewellery and architecture fields etc. but also are supposed to be used as photoelectrical catalyst in further work.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys have many advantages such as acceptable biocompatibility and good corrosion resistance and these advantages make them a widely preferred biomaterial. However, it is also known that they have some disadvantages such as poor wear resistance and insufficient surface wettability. Therefore, to overcome this disadvantages, boric/sulfuric anodic films with different anodization time was formed on the surface of Ti6Al4V. The morphological and structural properties of anodic films were evaluated by XRD, XPS, SEM, Raman spectra, micro-hardness tester, 3D profilometer, and surface tension-meter. Also, the tribological behavior of them was analyzed by a pin-on-disk tribo-tester. The average coefficient of friction (CoF) of the untreated Ti6Al4V alloy is 0.37, while the CoF of boron containing TiO 2 anodic films is in the range of 0.04–0.15. Also, the anodic films reduced the wear rate by about 30% compared to the untreated Ti6Al4V. In addition to all these, it was observed that the anodic films changed the surface morphology. It was determined that the produced anodic films were in porous structures and with the increase of the applied anodizing time, the possibility of contacting the liquid with the surface increased.

Abstract:Thanks to a considerable number of fascinating properties, titanium (Ti) and Ti alloys play important roles in a variety of industrial sectors. However, Ti and Ti alloys could not satisfy all industrial requirements; the degradation of Ti and Ti alloys always commences on their surfaces in service, which declines the performances of Ti workpieces. Therefore, with aim to further improve their mechanical, corrosion and biological properties, surface modification is often required for Ti and Ti alloys. This article reviews the technologies and recent developments of surface‐modification methods with respect to Ti and Ti alloys, including mechanical, physical, chemical, and biochemical technologies. Conventional methods have limited improvement in the properties and/or restriction on the geometry of workpieces. Therefore, many advanced surface‐modification technologies have emerged in recent decades. New methods make Ti and Ti alloys have better performance and extended applications. With requirement of high surface properties in future. Understanding the mechanism in various surface‐modification methods, combining the advantages of current technologies and developing new coating materials with high performance are required urgently. As such, incorporation of different surface‐modification technologies with high‐performance modified layers may be the mainstream of surface modifications for Ti and Ti alloys.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of surface microarc oxidation modification on the comprehensive properties of titanium alloys in seawater environment, the metallographic structure of titanium alloy Microarc oxidation modified surface layer and the basic physical parameters such as hardness, thickness and roughness were measured, and the PTFE, filled with 15% glass fiber +5% were filled with 25% fiberglass. The PTFE of graphite and the PTFE filled with 60% tin bronze were tested for friction by friction pair materials, and the wear amount and roughness of titanium alloy and Microarc oxidation modified surface layer were test in simulated sea water as 3.5% Nacl solution, and the results showed that the surface modification of titanium alloy by Microarc oxidation could significantly improve its hardness. The surface roughness can reach 3.2μm, and the friction coefficient of different matching pairs is small, while the surface wear of microarc oxidation modification is less than that of substrate wear.
