Abstract:In this paper, we introduce complex pseudo splines that are derived from pseudo splines of type I. First, we show that the shifts of every complex pseudo spline are linearly independent. Therefore we can construct a biorthogonal wavelet system. Next, we investigate the Riesz basis property of the corresponding wavelet system generated by complex pseudo splines. The regularity of the complex pseudo splines will be analyzed. Furthermore, by using complex pseudo splines, we will construct symmetric or antisymmetric complex tight framelets with desired approximation order.

Abstract:Fourier series approximations of continuous but nonperiodic functions on an interval suffer the Gibbs phenomenon, which means there is a permanent oscillatory overshoot in the neighbourhoods of the endpoints. Fourier extensions circumvent this issue by approximating the function using a Fourier series which is periodic on a larger interval. Previous results on the convergence of Fourier extensions have focused on the error in the L2 norm, but in this paper we analyze pointwise and uniform convergence of Fourier extensions (formulated as the best approximation in the L2 norm). We show that the pointwise convergence of Fourier extensions is more similar to Legendre series than classical Fourier series. In particular, unlike classical Fourier series, Fourier extensions yield pointwise convergence at the endpoints of the interval. Similar to Legendre series, pointwise convergence at the endpoints is slower by an algebraic order of a half compared to that in the interior. The proof is conducted by an analysis of the associated Lebesgue function, and Jackson- and Bernstein-type theorems for Fourier extensions. Numerical experiments are provided. We conclude the paper with open questions regarding the regularized and oversampled least squares interpolation versions of Fourier extensions.

Abstract:Theory of wavelet frames and their applications to image restoration problems have been extensively studied for the past two decades. The success of wavelet frames in solving image restoration problems, which includes denoising, deblurring, inpainting, computed tomography, etc., is mainly due to their capability of sparsely approximating piecewise smooth functions such as images. However, in contrast to the wide applications of wavelet frame based approaches to image restoration problems, they are rarely used for some image/data analysis tasks, such as image segmentation, registration and surface reconstruction from unorganized point clouds. The main reason for this is the lack of geometric interpretations of wavelet frames and their associated transforms. Recently, geometric meanings of wavelet frames have been discovered and connections between the wavelet frame based approach and the differential operator based variational model were established.(1) Such discovery enabled us to extend the wavelet frame based approach to some image/data analysis tasks that have not yet been studied before. In this paper, we will provide a unified survey of the wavelet frame based models for image segmentation(2) and surface reconstruction from unorganized point clouds.(3) Advantages of the wavelet frame based approach are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we study nonhomogeneous wavelet systems which have close relations to the fast wavelet transform and homogeneous wavelet systems. We introduce and characterize a pair of frequency-based nonhomogeneous dual wavelet frames in the distribution space; the proposed notion enables us to completely separate the perfect reconstruction property of a wavelet system from its stability property in function spaces. The results in this paper lead to a natural explanation for the oblique extension principle, which has been widely used to construct dual wavelet frames from refinable functions, without any a priori condition on the generating wavelet functions and refinable functions. A nonhomogeneous wavelet system, which is not necessarily derived from refinable functions via a multiresolution analysis, not only has a natural multiresolution-like structure that is closely linked to the fast wavelet transform, but also plays a basic role in understanding many aspects of wavelet theory. To illustrate the flexibility and generality of the approach in this paper, we further extend our results to nonstationary wavelets with real dilation factors and to nonstationary wavelet filter banks having the perfect reconstruction property.

Abstract:Due to their adaptive nature, empirical wavelets had several successes in many fields from engineering, science, medical signal/image processing. Recently, a general theoretical framework has been developed in the one-dimensional case, showing the possibility to build empirical wavelets from any classic mother wavelets. Given extensive literature both in theory and applications of classic wavelet frames, it is legitimate to ask about the feasibility of building empirical wavelet frames. We address this question in this paper. We prove several results which provide conditions on the existence of empirical wavelet frames taking into account the above mentioned adaptability.

Abstract:This paper gives a perturbation theorem for frames in a Hilbert space which is a generalization of a result by Casazza and Christensen. Then this result is applied to the Perturbation of regular sampling in shift-invariant spaces. Irregular sampling theorems for frames in wavelet subspaces are established for which it is easy to derive explicit formulas and algorithms to calculate the ranges of the perturbations for frames. Furthermore, improved estimates for the Perturbations are derived for the Perturbations of regular sampling in shift-invariant spaces.

Abstract:The investigation of convergence of cascade sequence plays an important role in wavelet analysis on the Euclidean space and also in wavelet analysis on the Heisenberg group. Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of the convergence properties of the frame operators of Weyl-Heisenberg systems and shift-invariant systems, and relate these to the convergence of the Walnut representation. We give a deep analysis of necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for convergence of the frame operator. We show that symmetric, norm and unconditional convergence of the Walnut series are all different, but that weak and norm convergence are the same, while there are WH-systems for which the Walnut representation has none of these convergence properties. We make a detailed study of the CC-Condition (a sufficient condition for WH-systems to have finite upper frame bounds), and show that (for ab rational) a uniform version of this passes to the Wexler-Raz dual. We also show that a condition of Tolimieri and Orr implies the uniform CC-Condition. We obtain stronger results in the case when (g,a,b) is a WH-system and ab is rational. For example, if ab is rational, then the CC-Condition becomes equivalent to the unconditional convergence of the Walnut representation - even in a more general setting. Many of the results are generalized to shift-invariant systems. We give classifications for numerous important classes of WH-systems including: (1) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on L^p(R), 1\leq p; (2) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on the Wiener amalgam space; (3) The families of frames which have the same frame operator.
