Abstract:The Gibbs phenomenon is widely known for Fourier expansions of periodic functions and refers to the phenomenon that the $n$th Fourier partial sums overshoot a target function at jump discontinuities in such a way that such overshoots do not die out as $n$ goes to infinity. The Gibbs phenomenon for wavelet expansions using (bi)orthogonal wavelets has been studied in the literature. Framelets (also called wavelet frames) generalize (bi)orthogonal wavelets. Approximation by quasi-projection operators are intrinsically linked to approximation by truncated wavelet and framelet expansions. In this paper we shall establish a key identity for quasi-projection operators and then we use it to study the Gibbs phenomenon of framelet expansions and approximation by general quasi-projection operators. We shall also study and characterize the Gibbs phenomenon at an arbitrary point for approximation by quasi-projection operators. As a consequence, we show that the Gibbs phenomenon appears at all points for every tight or dual framelet having at least two vanishing moments and for quasi-projection operators having at least three accuracy orders. Our results not only improve current results in the literature on the Gibbs phenomenon for (bi)orthogonal wavelet expansions but also are new for framelet expansions and approximation by quasi-projection operators.

Abstract:The nth partial sums of a classical Fourier series have large oscillations near the jump discontinuities. This behaviour is the well-known Gibbs phenomenon. Recently, the inverse polynomial reconstruction method (IPRM) has been successfully implemented to reconstruct piecewise smooth functions by reducing the effects of the Gibbs phenomenon for Fourier series. This paper addresses the 2-D fractional Fourier series (FrFS) using the same approach used with the 1-D fractional Fourier series and finds that the Gibbs phenomenon will be observed in 1-D and 2-D fractional Fourier series expansions for functions at a jump discontinuity. The existing IPRM for resolution of the Gibbs phenomenon for 1-D and 2-D FrFS appears to be the same as that used for Fourier series. The proof of convergence provides theoretical basis for both 1-D and 2-D IPRM to remove Gibbs phenomenon. Several numerical examples are investigated. The results indicate that the IPRM method completely eliminates the Gibbs phenomenon and gives exact reconstruction results.

However the problem of constructing periodic wavelet frames with the help of extension principles is open. In this paper, we will construct tight periodic wavelet frames using the unitary extension principle and construct pairs of dual periodic wavelet frames using the mixed extension principle.

Abstract:The truncated Fourier series exhibits oscillation that does not disappear as the number of terms in the truncation is increased. This paper introduces 2-D fractional Fourier series (FrFS) according to the 1-D fractional Fourier series, and finds such a Gibbs oscillation also occurs in the partial sums of FrFS for bivariate functions at a jump discontinuity. In this study, the 2-D inverse polynomial reconstruction method (IPRM) which is a method based on the inversion of the transformation matrix that represents the fraction Fourier space has been used to remove the Gibbs effect. The purpose of this study is to verify the 2-D IPRM has the similar effection for removing the Gibbs oscillation for partial fractional Fourier sums of bivariate functions. Numerical experiments verify the efficiency and accuracy of IPRM.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the fractional Fourier series on the fractional torus and study some basic facts of fractional Fourier series, such as fractional convolution and fractional approximation. Meanwhile, fractional Fourier inversion and Poisson summation formula are also given. We further discuss the relationship between the decay of fractional Fourier coefficients and the smoothness of a function. Using the properties of fractional Fejer kernel, the pointwise convergence of fractional Fourier series can be established. Finally, we present the applications of fractional Fourier series to fractional partial differential equations with periodic boundary condition. Moreover, we apply approximation methods on the fractional torus to recover the non-stationary signals.

Abstract:In this note, we study the convergence from the discrete to the continuous non-linear Fourier transform. Relations between spectral problems and questions in complex function theory provide a new approach to the study of scattering problems and the non-linear Fourier transform \cite{Scatter}. In particular, the non-linear Fourier transform can be viewed from the perspective of spectral problems for differential operators. Results in \cite{MP, PZ} can be seen as results for the non-linear Fourier transform. These results are similar to some convergence problems for the discrete non-linear Fourier transform considered in \cite{T} and \cite{TT}.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of the convergence properties of the frame operators of Weyl-Heisenberg systems and shift-invariant systems, and relate these to the convergence of the Walnut representation. We give a deep analysis of necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for convergence of the frame operator. We show that symmetric, norm and unconditional convergence of the Walnut series are all different, but that weak and norm convergence are the same, while there are WH-systems for which the Walnut representation has none of these convergence properties. We make a detailed study of the CC-Condition (a sufficient condition for WH-systems to have finite upper frame bounds), and show that (for ab rational) a uniform version of this passes to the Wexler-Raz dual. We also show that a condition of Tolimieri and Orr implies the uniform CC-Condition. We obtain stronger results in the case when (g,a,b) is a WH-system and ab is rational. For example, if ab is rational, then the CC-Condition becomes equivalent to the unconditional convergence of the Walnut representation - even in a more general setting. Many of the results are generalized to shift-invariant systems. We give classifications for numerous important classes of WH-systems including: (1) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on L^p(R), 1\leq p; (2) The WH-systems for which the frame operator extends to a bounded operator on the Wiener amalgam space; (3) The families of frames which have the same frame operator.

Abstract:The relationship between the frame bounds of frames (Gabor) for the space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ with several generators from the Weyl-Heisenberg group and the scalars linked to the sum of frames is examined in this paper. We give sufficient conditions for the finite sum of frames of the space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ from the Weyl-Heisenberg group, with explicit frame bounds, in terms of frame bounds and scalars involved in the finite sum of frames, to be a frame for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. It is shown that if a series of square roots of upper frame bounds of countably infinite frames from the Weyl-Heisenberg group is convergent and some lower frame bound majorizes the sum of all other frame bounds, then the infinite sum of frames for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ space turns out to be a frame for the space $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. We show that the sum of frames from the Weyl-Heisenberg group and its dual frame always constitutes a frame. We provide sufficient conditions for the sum of images of frames under bounded linear operators acting on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ in terms of lower bounds of their Hilbert adjoint operator to be a frame. The finite sum of frames where frames are perturbed by bounded sequences of scalars is also discussed. As an application of the results, we show that the frame bounds of sums of frames can increase the rate of approximation in the frame algorithm. Our results are true for all types of frames.

Abstract:The paper interprets the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation as a Hamiltonian system with infinite dimensional phase space. There exists a Gibbs measure which is invariant under the flow associated with the canonical equations of motion. The logarithmic Sobolev and concentration of measure inequalities hold for the Gibbs measures, and here are extended to the k-point correlation function and distributions of related empirical measures. By Hasimoto’s theorem, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation gives a Lax pair of coupled ordinary differential equations for which the solutions give a system of moving frames. The paper studies the evolution of the measure induced on the moving frames by the Gibbs measure; the results are illustrated by numerical simulations. The paper contains quantitative estimates with well-controlled constants on the rate of convergence of the empirical distribution in Wasserstein metric.

Spectral theoretic characterisation of Markov chain convergence

Abstract:In this work, we characterise the statistics of Markov chains by constructing an associated sequence of periodic differential operators. Studying the density of states of these operators reveals the absolutely continuous invariant measure of the Markov chain. This approach also leads to a direct proof of convergence to the invariant measure, along with explicit convergence rates. We show how our method can be applied to a class of related Markov chains including the logistic map, the tent map and Chebyshev maps of arbitrary order.

Abstract:Fourier series approximations of continuous but nonperiodic functions on an interval suffer the Gibbs phenomenon, which means there is a permanent oscillatory overshoot in the neighbourhoods of the endpoints. Fourier extensions circumvent this issue by approximating the function using a Fourier series which is periodic on a larger interval. Previous results on the convergence of Fourier extensions have focused on the error in the L2 norm, but in this paper we analyze pointwise and uniform convergence of Fourier extensions (formulated as the best approximation in the L2 norm). We show that the pointwise convergence of Fourier extensions is more similar to Legendre series than classical Fourier series. In particular, unlike classical Fourier series, Fourier extensions yield pointwise convergence at the endpoints of the interval. Similar to Legendre series, pointwise convergence at the endpoints is slower by an algebraic order of a half compared to that in the interior. The proof is conducted by an analysis of the associated Lebesgue function, and Jackson- and Bernstein-type theorems for Fourier extensions. Numerical experiments are provided. We conclude the paper with open questions regarding the regularized and oversampled least squares interpolation versions of Fourier extensions.

Abstract:We extend the Bloch-decomposition based time-splitting spectral method introduced in an earlier paper [Z. Huang, S. Jin, P. Markowich, C. Sparber, A Bloch decomposition based split-step pseudo spectral method for quantum dynamics with periodic potentials, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 29 (2007) 515–538] to the case of (non-)linear Klein–Gordon equations. This provides us with an unconditionally stable numerical method which achieves spectral convergence in space, even in the case where the periodic coefficients are highly oscillatory and/or discontinuous. A comparison to a traditional pseudo-spectral method and to a finite difference/volume scheme shows the superiority of our method. We further estimate the stability of our scheme in the presence of random perturbations and give numerical evidence for the well-known phenomenon of Anderson’s localization.

Abstract:We study the fractional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with periodic initial boundary value condition in three spatial dimensions. The problem is discretized fully by Fourier Galerkin spectral method. The dynamical behavior of the resulting discrete system is examined. The existence of a global attractor is established, and the corresponding convergence is proved through the error estimates of the discrete solution. Numerical stability and convergence of the discrete scheme are proved.
