Abstract:SiC was chosen as the foaming agent, and river bottom silt, waste oil sludge, paint bucket slag, and fly ash were used as raw materials, to prepare lightweight ceramsite without adding any chemical additives. The effects of SiC dosing and sintering temperature on various properties of the ceramsite were studied, and the pore-forming mechanism of the lightweight ceramsite was clarified by thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results showed that the single ceramsite compressive strength, water absorption, bulk density, and porosity of ceramsite sintered at 1180 °C with 1.0% SiC were 2.15 MPa, 2.02%, 490 kg/m3, and 23.85%, respectively. The major mineralogical compositions were quartz, fayalite, and kyanite, with small amounts of albite-low from 1140 to 1190 °C. Furthermore, the concentration of all tested heavy metals from ceramsite was lower than the maximum allowable concentration of the leaching solution specified in the Chinese national standard (GB 5085.3-2007), which reveals that this solid waste ceramsite will not cause secondary environmental pollution. The prepared ceramsite, exhibiting lower bulk density, high water absorption and porosity, and effective solidification of deleterious elements, can be used to prepare green lightweight aggregate concrete. Importantly, preparation of solid waste ceramsite is an effective way to dispose of hazardous wastes.

Abstract:The escalating global issue of soil pollution by heavy metals, particularly incinerated municipal solid waste fly ash (IMSWFA), necessitates effective remediation strategies. The prevailing approach for safely disposing and utilization of IMSWFA involves high-temperature sintering. In this work, we propose a cost-effective method to produce ceramsites by utilizing IMSWFA, municipal sludge (MS), contaminated soil (CS), and iron tail slag (ITS). After conducting a comprehensive analysis and comparison of outcomes obtained from orthogonal experiments and single-factor experiments, it was determined that the optimal preparation conditions for achieving desirable results are preheating at a temperature of 400 °C for 15 min followed by sintering at a temperature of 1150 °C for 10 min. The optimal ratio of raw materials for ceramsites is 15 % IMSWFA, 15 % MS, 58 % CS, and 12 % ITS. The ceramsites, prepared in accordance with the specified process and raw material ratio, exhibit remarkable properties including robust stability, minimal water absorption, reduced weight, and elevated cylindrical compressive strength. The ceramsites demonstrate an exceptionally high heavy metal loss ratio ranging from 91 % to 100 %, while exhibiting significantly lower leaching quantities of these metals compared to the raw materials. Additionally, aging tests of ceramsites were performed under UV light and acid/alkaline etching to simulate the real-world environment. This work can be utilized to investigate the long-term environmental impact of ceramsites derived from municipal solid waste (MSW), thereby making a valuable contribution to the advancement of solid waste management technology.

Abstract:To solve the problems of difficult treatment and environmental pollution of regolith granite sand washing sludge (RGSWS 1 1 Regolith granite sand washing sludge. ), the study was carried out to prepare ultra-lightweight ceramsite using RGSWS as the main raw material, silica fume as a conditioning agent, red mud as cosolvent, and phosphorus tailings as a pore-foaming agent. The effects of raw meal ratio, sintering temperature (1130–1280 °C), and sintering time (5–25 min) on the properties of ceramsite were investigated. Under the optimal preparation conditions (RGSWS: red mud: silica fume: phosphorus tailings = 60:20:20:10 and sintering at 1220 °C for 15 min). The ceramsite showed a high compressive strength of 2.63 MPa, an expansion rate of 133.7 %, a 1-h water absorption rate of 1.32 %, an apparent density of 792.3 kg/m3, and a bulk density of 349.2 kg/m3. The sintering process transforms the raw meal into substances such as mullite, diopside, and anorthite, which helps to improve the strength of the lightweight ceramsite. At the same time, harmful substances in the raw materials can be effectively solidified in the internal structure of the ceramsite, making the ceramsite have excellent environmental safety. Moreover, the full characterizations have been made to reveal the structure and formation mechanism of ceramsite. This research utilizes four kinds of solid waste to prepare valuable material, which is helpful for the development of environmentally friendly and ultra-lightweight construction materials.

Abstract:Dredging sea mud produced during the coastal infrastructure construction has been gradually becoming an environmental problem in China. Making ceramsite is an attractive way to convert the waste sea mud to resources used for many industrial sectors. However, the imapct of preheating and sintering conditions on the ceramsite properties and the biofilm formation capacity of the ceramsite are still poorly understood. This study aims to fill these knowledge gaps. Results suggested the optimal conditions for the preheating temperature was 350°C, the preheating time was 15 min, the sintering temperature was 1040°C, and the sintering time was 9 min. The dredging sea mud-derived ceramsite showed better biofilm formation capacity with high COD and NH4+-N removal performance compared with the commercial ceramsites. The content of the chloride ion in the ceramist granules is close to zero, and the low cost of this material, implying this dredging sea mud-derived ceramsite, could be an engineering favorable material for using it as a biocarrier in the real application.

Abstract:Disposal and harmless utilization of coal-based solid waste, industrial sludge, and other bulk industrial solid waste is a sustainable and economical approach. In this study, coal gangue and printing and dyeing sludge were recycled to reconstruct high-strength ceramsite using a simple and scalable method. The high silica and alumina contents in coal gangue provided a foundation for ceramsite preparation, and the iron oxide in the printing and dyeing sludge could reduce the sintering temperature. The optimal synthesis conditions were as follows: Coal gangue: printing and dyeing sludge = 40:60; sawdust content of 9mass%; sintering temperature of 1175 °C for 15 min; and preheating temperature of 400 °C for 10 min. The designed ceramsite exhibited high compressive strength of 27.26 MPa, low 1-h water absorption of 1.26%, and bulk and apparent densities of 998 and 1597 kg/m3, respectively; thus, it was categorized as high-strength ceramsite. In determining the modelling mechanism during the sintering process, the silicon and aluminum distributions on the ceramsite surface obtained under the optimal preparation conditions was highly consistent, forming a silicoaluminate that supported the ceramsite strength. Sawdust addition increased the pore structure of the ceramsite. The heavy metals contained in the raw materials were well-immobilized in the ceramsite, indicating that the prepared ceramsites were free from secondary contaminants. Use of bulk solid waste to prepare high-strength ceramsites is a feasible resourceful and harmless utilization method, which is of great significance for bulk solid waste disposal and reuse.

Abstract:In this paper, the Huainan No.1 Sewage treatment plant's dehydrated sewage sludge and the power plant fly ash have been taken as the main raw materials and clay as the cementing agent to prepare lightweight ceramsite. Using the single-factor experiment to screen roasting craft, the optimal conditions are obtained as follows: the clay content is approximately 15%, sludge content 35-40%, preheating temperature 350-400°C.The preheating time is 15-20mins, roasting temperature 1150-1200°C, roasting time 15-20mins. The product’s loose density is 710-750kg/m3, particle density 1305-1380kg/m3, compressive strength 13.2-15.2MPa, bibulous rate 12.4-18.1%, particle shape factor 1.3-1.4, specific surface area 5.68-6.01m2/g. The performance index can meet the national standard requirements for fly ash ceramsite in the light collection aggregate. This lightweight ceramsite may serve as the water treatment material, the building material and the thermal insulation material and so on. This research had not only solved the problems of contamination caused by sludge and solid wastes like fly ash, but also brought certain economic and environmental benefits.
Efficient Utilization of Waste Marine Clay for Fine Aggregate to Develop Sustainable and Cost-Effective Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites

Abstract:The prevalent overreliance on silica sand within strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC) underscores the urgency to address the depletion of natural resource. To address this concern, a novel approach involving the utilization of waste marine clay (WMC), an underutilized construction waste residue, is explored. This study marks the first application of high-volume calcined WMC as a substitute for silica sand within sustainable and cost-effective strain-hardening cement-based composites (SC-SHCC). The investigation encompasses a comprehensive analysis of SC-SHCC, covering mechanical properties, hydration, shrinkage, and cost. The results showed that the integration of calcined WMC instead of silica sand had noticeable improvements in the mechanical properties of SC-SHCC due to the notable pozzolanic activity and filling effect of calcined WMC. The developed SC-SHCC replacing two-thirds of the silica sand with calcined WMC exhibited a compressive strength of 76.34 MPa, a tensile strength of 14.63 MPa, and a tensile strain capacity of 5.99%, which successfully pushed the performance of conventional SHCC. Key indicators such as compressive strength, flexural strength, and tensile strength exhibited promising enhancements as calcined WMC dosage increased. The incorporation of calcined WMC contributed to heightened ettringite formation, thereby improving the tensile strength, and tensile strain energy of SC-SHCC. Besides, SC-SHCC exhibited pronounced drying shrinkage, primarily attributable to the free water evaporation and capillary pore development associated with calcined WMC. Furthermore, substituting calcined WMC for silica sand led to reducing the costs within SC-SHCC production. Therefore, the findings of this study hold promise for advancing the field of SHCC while promoting the environmentally friendly utilization of waste materials.

Abstract:A novel method is introduced in this study for producing ceramisite coarse aggregates that are both lightweight and possess high strength. The process involves utilizing fly ash as the primary material, along with coal ash floating beads (CAFBs) that have high softening temperature and a spherical hollow structure serving as the template for forming pores. This study examined the impact of varying particle size and quantity of floating beads on the composition and characteristics of ceramisite aggregates. Results showed that the high softening temperature of floating beads provided stability to the spherical cavity structure throughout the sintering process. Furthermore, the pore structure could be effectively tailored by manipulating the size and quantity of the floating beads in the manufacturing procedure. The obtained ceramisite aggregates feature a compact outer shell and a cellular inner core with uniformly distributed pores that are isolated from each other and mostly spherical in form. They achieve a low density ranging from 723 to 855 kg/m3, a high cylinder compressive strength between 8.7 and 13.5 MPa, and minimal water absorption rates of 3.00 to 4.09%. The performance metrics of these coarse aggregates significantly exceeded the parameters specified in GB/T 17431.1-2010 standards.

Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is an environmentally friendly method for reclaiming waste activated sludge. However, it cannot be overlooked that the solid residue generated from this process can still pose environmental risks and impose economic pressure on society. To mitigate and recycle the solid residue, this study utilized it as a primary raw material for manufacturing ceramsite with potential applications in wastewater treatment. The optimal ratio of solid residue to fly ash was demonstrated to be 6:4 with an additional 15% of clay supplementing the raw ceramsite materials. Furthermore, the optimal sintering process was established as preheating at 300 °C for 25 min followed by sintering at 1085 °C for 10 min, as determined through an L16 (44) Orthogonal test. The prepared ceramsite demonstrated advantageous performance parameters that exceeded the standards outlined in the Chinese industry standard CJ/T 299-2008 for water treatment artificial ceramsite. When utilized in an ozonation system, the ceramsite exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for phenol degradation by promoting the decomposition of molecular O3 into hydroxyl radicals. Additionally, it displayed minimal leaching of heavy metals and lower application costs. These findings emphasize its attractiveness in water and wastewater treatment processes and present a practical strategy for reclaiming this solid residue.

Abstract:Red mud is a solid waste containing high alkaline nature and hazardous elements generated during the alumina production process, and its harmless utilization is of great significance to the environment. In this work, the sintering behavior and physical properties of ultra-lightweight ceramsite using red mud and waste sawdust were investigated when the sintering temperatures are between 1075 and 1175 oC. The results reveal that the red mud is a suitable material to produce ultra-lightweight ceramsite, and the introduction of waste sawdust effectively enhances the expansion process. The bulk density of ceramsite decreases first and then increases with the increase of red mud and sawdust content. The pores are formed by the reduction reactions of Fe2O3 in red mud and the combustion of sawdust. When the red mud content is 50% and the mass ratio of sawdust to Fe2O3 is 0.3, the bulk density of ceramsite is in the range of 295–480 kg/cm3. Furthermore, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals in ceramsite are far below the permissible limit. This study is helpful to realize the harmless and large-scale utilization of red mud.

Abstract:With the continuing advancement in China’s exploration and development technologies of shale gas resources, there was a significant increase in shale gas oil-based drilling cuttings. In this paper, oil-based drilling cutting pyrolysis residues (ODCPRs) was used as the main raw material for preparing lightweight and high-strength building ceramsites to eliminate the environmental risks and recycle industrial waste. Firstly, orthogonal experiments were used to study the influences of raw material composition, preheating temperature, preheating time, sintering temperature, and sintering time on the properties of building ceramsites. From the results, the sintering temperature and the content of ODCPRs were discovered to be the key factors affecting the sintering process of ceramsites. Secondly, the influences of sintering temperature and heating rate on the properties of building ceramists were further explored to find the optimum sintering conditions. When the content of ODCPRs in the ceramsite was set to be 50%, the obtained building ceramsites presented excellent properties with particle compressive strength of 6.31 MPa, bulk density of 575.11 kg/m 3 , apparent density of 1097.24 kg/m 3 , and the water absorption of 1.89%. Finally, XRD, SEM, TG-DSC, and heavy metal leaching experiments were comprehensively conducted to analyze the composition structure variation and sintering mechanism of the building ceramsite. This paper presents an approach for the recycling, utilization, and disposal of oil-based drilling cuttings in the oil field waste management.

Utilization of Dried Sludge As an Additive for Making Ceramsite

Abstract:Dried sludge as an additive for making ceramsite is a new effective approach for disposal of sludge.In this study,sewage sludge,water glass and clay were chosen as the initial components,and the optimal ratios of the components and the appropriate process were obtained as follows: the dried sludge/clay of 100%,the adherent/clay of 20%,sintering temperature of 950℃,sintering time of 20min.The main characteristics index of ceramsite were shown as follows: bulk density of 519kg/m3,particle density of 1110kg/m3,water absorption of 19.6% and porosity of 53.2%.The function of primary components in the sintering process,the mechanism of porosity formation and solid phase reaction were discussed,and XRD and XRF were also conducted to analyze the crystalline phases and chemical composition of ceramsite.The results indicate that it is a proper way to make ceramsite with dried sludge as an additive raw material and the ceramsite obtained in test has good property.
A Novel and Clean Utilization of Multiple Solid Wastes to Produce Foam Glass-Ceramic

Abstract:Direct materialisation is a large-scale solid waste utilisation approach with economic and environmental benefits. This study explored a novel process for the utilisation of multiple solid wastes, including fly ash, blast furnace slag and desulphurisation gypsum, for foam glass-ceramic preparation. The high-temperature decomposition reactions of desulphurisation gypsum were analysed to investigate its suitability as a foaming agent. The effects of the sintering temperature during the preparation process and the raw material composition on the properties of the prepared foam glass-ceramic were investigated. The optimum parameters were a desulphurisation gypsum addition amount of 7 wt% and a sintering temperature of 1,200 degrees C, while the corresponding bulk density, thermal conductivity and compressive strength were 1.21 g/cm3, 0.153 W/m K and 11.23 MPa, respectively. Finally, the migration and transformation of heavy metals during the preparation process and the leaching behaviour of heavy metals from the final material were analysed. The recycling of multiple solid wastes for foam glass-ceramic production has significant economic and environmental benefits. The excellent thermal insulation and strength properties of foam glass-ceramic make them suitable for manufacturing wall insulation materials.
Utilization of Dried Sludge for Making Ceramsite

Abstract:Dried sludge as additive for making ceramsite is a new effective approach for disposal of sludge. In this study sewage sludge, water glass and clay were chosen as the components, the optimal ratio of the components and the most appropriate conditions were obtained. The functions of primary components in the sintering process, porosity formation mechanism and solid phase reaction also have been discussed. The optimized process parameters were shown as follows: the ratio of dried sludge/clay (wt%) was 33%, ratio of adherent/clay (wt%) was 15%, sintering temperature was 1000 degrees C, sintering time was 10 min. Bulk density was 582 kg m(-3), particle density was 1,033 kg m(-3), water absorption was 9.5%, porosity was 43.7%. SEM, EDS, XRD and XRF analyses were also carried out. The results indicate that dried sludge as raw material is a good way for making ceramsite. Biological Aerated Filters (BAFs) with filter media of Guangzhou ceramsite, Jiangxi ceramsite, activated carbon and ceramsite (obtained in test) were selected to treat municipal wastewater. The average removal efficiencies of ceramsite (obtained in test) for turbidity, COD, SCOD and NH3-N were about 96.4%, 76.2%, 59.6% and 82.3% respectively and were higher than those of other ceramsites.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to provide technological parameters for the pilot scale study,for which we have investigated the effect of the formulas on the major properties(specific surface area,compressive strength,water absorption and density)of the ceramisite sintered from the sewage sludge,sediment and fly ash so as to optimize the proportion of the raw materials for making ceramisite filter and lightweight aggregate.To proceed with our research,we have first of all examined the effect of the preheating temperature and the water ingredient of the raw materials.At the same time,orthogonal design has been set up to discuss the sintering effect of the main process conditions.The experimental results of our research indicate that no remarkable regularity can be found between the raw material formula and the major properties of the ceramisite.Therefore,the formula for producing different kinds of ceramisite can be deduced and confirmed by the field experiments according to the components of the raw materials and the field experimental conditions.Sufficient preheating process is expected to enhance the compressive strength of the ceramisite,while insufficient one is likely to be beneficial for improving the pose structure and reducing the density of the ceramisite.Increasing water content in the raw materials is likely to lead to the ceramisite's loose structure,low compressive strength and high water absorption rate.However,the sintering temperature is the most important influential factor for producing both the filter and the aggregate.Adding sewage sludge in a certain range proves beneficial for expanding the specific surface area for sintering ceramisite filter.But the dosage of sewage sludge should be restrained within 40%-45% or the compressive strength would drop dramatically.The content of sludge should be limited within 30%-35% for the making of lightweight aggregate in order to maintain the compressive strength at a higher level

Process and property optimization of ceramsite preparation by Bayan Obo tailings and blast furnace slag

Abstract:The ceramsite was prepared by using Bayan Obo tailings and blast furnace slag of Baotou Steel as the main raw materials and coal gangue as pore-forming agent, and the process system and the performance of ceramsite were optimized. The phase transformation rules of the ceramsite prepared by multi-source solid waste in sintering method were clarified. The influence of sintering process parameters on ceramsite performance and the purification effect of ceramsite on ammonia nitrogen wastewater were revealed. The results show that the reasonable proportion of raw materials for preparing ceramsite is 60% tailings, 35% blast furnace slag and 5% coal gangue. The reasonable preparation process of ceramsite is preheating at 350 °C for 12 min, increasing the temperature to 750 °C and holding for 60 min, then increasing the temperature to 1130 °C and roasting for 20 min. The cooling method is to cool down with the furnace. The prepared ceramsite has compressive strength of 1.89 MPa, porosity of 51.31%, water absorption of 31.42%, and bulk density of 1.94 g/cm3. When the ceramsite is used to treat ammonia nitrogen wastewater, the removal rate of ammonia nitrogen is 47.33%.

New technology of utilizing dried sludge for making ceramsite

Abstract:Dried sludge as an additive for making ceramsite is a new effective approach for disposal of sludge. In this study,sewage sludge,water glass and clay were chosen as the initial components,and the optimal ratios of the components and the appropriate process were obtained as follows: the dried sludge/clay of 100%,the adherent/clay of 20%,sintering temperature of 950℃,sintering time of 20min.The main characteristics index of ceramsite were shown as follows: bulk density of 519kg/m~3,particle density of 1110kg/m~3,water absorption of 19.6% and porosity of 53.2%.The function of primary components in the sintering process,the mechanism of porosity formation and solid phase reaction were discussed,and XRD and XRF were also conducted to analyze the crystalline phases and chemi- cal composition of ceramsite.The results indicate that it is a proper way for making ceramsite with dried sludge as an additive raw material and the ceramsite obtained in test has good property.
