Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of ultrafine Mo-based oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel technique are studied by using XRD, TEM, TPR, FT-Raman, BET surface area measurement, and microreactor tests. It is shown that for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde, the ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles exhibit higher benzaldehyde selectivity and toluene conversion than the corresponding larger oxide particles prepared by the conventional coprecipitation method. The unique catalytic properties of ultrafine Fe2(MoO4)3 and Ce2(MoO4)3 particles may be correlated to the higher mobility of lattice oxygen ions in the oxides and their higher BET surface area. For the ultrafine Mo-based oxides prepared by the sol–gel process, the selectivity to benzaldehyde follows the order Ce2(MoO4)3>Fe2(MoO4)3>La2(MoO4)3>MoO3, which is in good agreement with the reducibility of Mo ions and reactivity of lattice oxygen ions in the ultrafine Mo-based oxides. These results reveal that the lattice oxygen ions in the Mo-based oxides are the main active species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde. The results of in situ LRS studies indicate that the terminal Mo=O bonds in Ce2(MoO4)3 are the main reactive species for partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:In-situ Mössbauer spectroscopy, as well as x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the Fe−Mo oxide catalysts with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29 and 0.67. The results showed that Fe2(MoO4)3 in the catalysts was reduced to β-FeMoO4 during the oxidation of toluene, and the β-FeMoO4 was reoxidized to Fe2(MoO4)3 by the air. The catalyst with the ratio of Fe/Mo=0.29, which was easier to be reduced to β-FeMoO4, showed higher catalytic activity. The different effects of Fe and Mo in the catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:As one of the typical volatile organic compounds, toluene is harmful to human health and challenging to decompose effectively with traditional photocatalysts, such as TiO 2 or ZnO. Here, a trace Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 composite photocatalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method and subsequently impregnation treatment. Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 were optimized by adjusting the molar ration of TiO 2 and Bi 2 WO 6 . The obtained Fe (0.1) -TB 2 with only 0.1wt% Fe dopant exhibited superior photocatalytic activity with over 90% toluene removal efficiency after 180 min under visible light irradiation. A series of characterizations reveal that the improved photocatalytic activity of Fe doped TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 can be attributed to synergistic effects between the extension of photogenerated carrier lifetime, the increase of visible light absorption range by narrowing the energy bandgap and the formation of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals and holes as the key reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the photodegradation reaction were confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments. Therefore, introducing Fe-ions into TiO 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 photocatalysts is an effective way to enhance the photocatalytic activities, and the modified catalysts can be considered as a promising material for decomposing toluene and other VOCs.

Abstract:Structure and catalytic properties of La-Mo complex oxide ultrafine particles were studied by using TPR, FT-IR, UV-DRS and oxidation of toluene reaction test. It is shown that benzaldehyde selectivity for La-Mo complex particles is much higher than that of the MoO 3. The mobility of lattice oxygen (Mo=O) species of the ultrafine La-Mo catalyst is larger than that of the MoO 3 catalyst due to the strong interaction between La and Mo, this leads to the higher benzaldehyde selectivity of La-Mo catalyst.

Abstract:Highly efficient and stable catalysts serve as the crucial factor in VOCs catalytic oxidation technology. Iron-based materials are recognized as potential VOCs catalysts due to their cost-effectiveness and non-toxic nature. However, the limited catalytic performance of traditional iron oxide catalysts hinders their further industrial applications. A series of FeO x catalysts were synthesized via pyrolysis of Fe-based MOFs with diverse morphologies for toluene catalytic oxidation. Characterization results demonstrated that the FeO x -100 catalyst performed optimal characteristics, including the abundant specific surface area and smaller crystallite size, which offered highly dispersed active sites and defects for toluene oxidation. The catalytic activity of FeO x -100 was improved by adjusting the precursors and pyrolysis conditions, achieving a 50% toluene conversion at 223 °C and 90% conversion at 249 °C. The redox abilities of FeO x catalysts were carefully evaluated to assess their impact on catalytic activity. The results confirmed that FeO x -100 exhibited superior low-temperature reducibility, remarkable presence of surface active oxygen and lattice oxygen species, jointly facilitating the toluene oxidation performance at lower temperatures. The results of in situ DRIFTS provided evidence supporting a degradation pathway for toluene, likely proceeding as follows: toluene→ benzaldehyde→ benzoate→ anhydride → ...→ CO 2 and H 2 O.

Abstract:Iron-modified HZSM-5 materials were prepared by the impregnation techniques at ambient temperature and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and ICP-MS to determine the phase structure and loadings of iron dioxide. This material was tested for solvent-free catalytic oxidation of toluene under mild conditions. The result shows that Fe2O3/HZSM-5 is an effective catalyst, exhibiting 17.3% conversion of toluene, 51.4% selectivity to benzaldehyde at 90°C. Furthermore, the catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for three times without a significant loss in its activity and selectivity.

Abstract:A series of Co-MOF nanocrystals are prepared in a water/DMF/TX-100/ionic liquid quaternary W/O microemulsion system at room temperature. DMF is chosen as the additive to improve the dissolution of organic linkers in water droplets, which ensures Co-MOF crystal formation in the polar cores. The shape and size of these crystals are effectively controlled by tuning the ionic liquid cation alkyl chain length and the ratio of water to TX-100 and have obvious differences compared to those prepared by the traditional solvothermal method. Molecular dynamic simulations prove the mechanism of the crystal growth process in this microemulsion system. The toluene selective oxidation reaction is selected as the model reaction to study the catalytic performance of these materials. Among all these catalysts, the multilayer nanoplate Co-MOF shows the best catalytic activity and selectivity for toluene owing to the small crystal size and exposed special crystal surfaces of this material. Our synthesis strategy provides a facile way to develop MOF nanocatalysts with controllable shapes and sizes for catalytic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Two series of the Ce–Mo oxide catalysts for the partial oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde have been prepared, respectively, by the sol–gel and coprecipitation methods and characterized by using various techniques. The results have shown that the catalytic reactivity is strongly composition related; and ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel process are apparently a better catalyst than large Ce–Mo oxide particles with a same composition but prepared by the coprecipitation method. The highest yield of benzaldehyde is obtained when the composition of the ultrafine particles reaches the vicinity of Ce/(Ce+Mo)=0.50, corresponding to a catalyst consists of both CeO2 and Ce2(MoO4)3. The reaction mechanism and the promotion effect of the excess CeO2 in the ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide are discussed to explain why ultrafine Ce–Mo oxide particles prepared by the sol–gel method are good for the partial oxidation of toluene.

Abstract:Ferric molybdate nanotubes(FeMo-nt) with hollow structure were prepared based on Kirkendall effect and then modified with various additives. The physicochemical properties of the modified FeMo-nt and their catalysis in propene oxidation were studied. The results showed that there were Mo species enrichment on the FeMo-nt surface and a special interaction between the Mo and Fe species in the FeMo-nt catalysts. The modified FeMo-nt catalysts exhibited better catalytic performance in the propene oxidation by air than that of FeMo-nt and the product composition could be selectively controlled by using the catalysts modified with different additives. Moreover, the FeMo-nt catalysts modified with aminopropyl triethoxy silane(APS) can effectively inhibit the formation of CO x in the oxidation products, which leads to the obvious increase of the yields of valuable propene derivatives, such as acrolein and acrylic acid.

Abstract:To examine the influence of Fe-Mn interactions on the catalytic removal to toluene, FeO x , MnO x and FeMnO x catalysts were manufactured via co-precipitation approach. FeMnO x catalysts presented the optimal low-temperature catalytic toluene activity which attained 100 % removal of toluene (T 100 ) at 270 °C. The physical and chemical characterization of the material confirmed an increased ratio of Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and O ads /O lat bonds caused by to the formation of Fe 3+ -O-Mn 3+ bonds. Concurrently, the low-temperature catalytic activity for toluene increased with the increased density of oxygen vacancies, the changed properties in oxygen vacancies and the enhanced oxidation capacity of surface activated oxygen species. In situ DRIFTS experiments were performed to infer different toluene degradation pathways on three catalysts. The catalytic routes for toluene over FeMnO x catalyst was different at 150 °C and 260 °C. At 150 °C, as the surface oxygen vacancies were not fully activated, the reaction pathway was toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzaldehyde → phenol. The path of toluene over FeMnO x catalyst at 260 °C was toluene → benzyl alcohol → benzoaldehyde → benzoate → maleic anhydride and carbonate → H 2 O and CO 2 . As compared with MnO x and FeO x catalysts, FeMnO x catalyst could oxidize benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and phenol at 150 °C. This decreased the energy required to open the ring of benzene and accelerated the catalytic oxidation rate.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide nanobelts were synthesized using a sonochemical-hydrothermal method. Hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) was introduced onto the surfaces of the nanobelts and bulk vanadium oxide to tune their catalytic properties; these properties were tested using gas-phase oxidation of toluene. The catalytic activity of the vanadium oxide nanobelts was higher than that of the bulk oxide as a result of the higher lattice oxygen activity of the nanobelts. Doping with HDPA, tuning the lattice oxygen activity, and blocking unselective sites led to both higher activity and selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on nanobelt-like vanadium oxides, whereas led to lower activity but higher selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on bulk vanadium oxides.
Understanding the suppressive role of catalytically active Pt-TiO2 interfacial sites towards complete oxidation of toluene

Abstract:As interface plays an important role in catalytic reactions, its effects on catalysis has been intensive investigated. However, for complex reactions and substrates, the multiple steps generate different intermediates which may introduce the adverse effect. Herein, to investigating the role of Interfacial sites in toluene oxidation, the Pt-TiO2 interfacial perimeters are manipulated by tuning the diameter of platinum nanoparticles (2.7 nm to 12.4 nm) supported on TiO2 with similar electronic metal-support interaction, which has been comformed by XPS and CO-DRIFT. Steady state tests show that the Pt-TiO2 interfacial sites have suppressive effect on the catalytic performance. Detailed in situ characterizations and DFT calculation demonstrate that the Pt-TiO2 interfacial structures are prefered for the adsorption of toluene and can critically change the reaction pathway. Due to the promotional role of adjacent oxygen species, the toluene adsorbed at the Pt-TiO2 interface undergoes an early oxidative dehydrogenation process, which is more competitive compared with toluene desorption and degradation. The carbon-enriched species with strong adsorption are formed consequently, which ocuppy the active sites and block the migration of active O species for further oxidation. This work deepens the fundamental understanding of the controdictive role of interfacial sites, and provides new insights for the rational design of efficient catalysts for complete oxidation of toluene.
